On today's episode of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Politically Georgia podcast, hosts Tia Mitchell, Bill Nigut, and Greg Bluestein sit down with State Election Board chairman John Fervier. Fervier discusses his opposition to controversial ballot processing rules and shares his perspective on the future of election oversight in Georgia.     Next, we explore the intersection of music and politics. With stars like Bruce Springsteen making appearances for candidates and popular songs played at rallies, music often takes center stage in presidential campaigns. But the Trump campaign has recently faced restrictions from artists who don't want their work used. Music producer Issac Hayes III joins us to explain his actions to prevent Trump from using a song his father, the legendary Isaac Hayes, wrote.     We'll wrap up the week by answering your questions from the listener mailbag and sharing our picks for who's up and who's down this week in politics.        Links to today's topics:  Georgia election board chair calls his GOP board colleagues "unprofessional"  Judge overturns new state election board certification rules  Watchdog group sues election board members for using private emails for public business  Trump ordered to stop playing Issac Hayes music at rallies           Have a question or comment for the show? The annual Southern Heritage Classic Cultural Celebration is amongst us and I thought it would be fitting to have the founder, Fred Jones Jr. sit down with me for a live podcast at the historic Cossitt Library. Growing up in the Cleaborn Homes housing community in the Memphis area, Fred attended Booker T. Washington High School active in baseball, basketball, track and band. A severe football injury derailed his hopes of receiving a scholarship to college which led him to taking on jobs such as caddying for the Memphis Country Club and working at a florist on Vance. Fred had a gift for numbers which led him to receiving a job in the auditing department at Union Planters Bank and where he began their management program ultimately receiving BBA from Memphis State in 1971. At this point Fred made a transition and started working for Issac Hayes with Stax Records handling his finances. Having discovered a knack for putting together entertainers with large audiences in the most attractive venues, he started working with a plethora of first class talent including The Isley Brothers, Prince, Bill Cosby, The Commodores, Stevie Wonder, Parliament-Funkadelic, Luther Vandross, LL Cool J, Count Basie, Tyler Perry, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, The O'Jays, Usher, and hundreds more. As a result, the Southern Heritage Classic began in 1990 in Memphis, TN with HBCU's TSU vs. JSU. Fast forward to 2023, we are now entering the 34th Southern Heritage Classic Cultural Celebration with a new HBCU headliner, UAPB. Take a listen as Fred shares many stories throughout his journey which includes how the SHC came to fruition and his recollection when he received the news that JSU would no longer participate in the SHC. Fred and his team are laser focused on their strong commitment to continuing the traditional festivities in the Memphis community consisting of a parade, a fashion show, concerts, a golf tournament, tailgate parties, a coaches luncheon, a battle of the bands, and more. He hopes to see you this year at the Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis, TN the weekend of September 7-9 with UAPB vs. TSU.

The guest for this episode of Live Music & Me is the author, musician and kick ass DJ, George Paterson. ( we recorded it a year ago, technical gremlins prevented it from coming out until now, apologies!) George covered plenty of ground with his live music recollections - from his first gig at the famous Glasgow Apollo ( Toyah Wilcox) to Issac Hayes at the Town & County Club, to Sinatra at the Royal Albert Hall. He should also have ticked off Pavarotti, however a diary clash with a certain Glasgow football club got in the way - and for £3.50 he could have saw The Rolling Stones at the Glasgow Apollo. But back in the day, £3.50 was a lot of money....Big thanks to George for sharing his memories, and we have put a few of his favourites on the You Tube video link at the end of the podcast. Enjoy & stay safe.

Trumpeter/composer/arranger/bandleader/educator Tony Kadleck is one of the most sought-after trumpet players on the New York City scene, and has been for some time. He moved to NYC in 1986, following his studies at the New England Conservatory–and a stint in the trumpet section of The Buddy Rich Big Band–and his phone has been ringing ever since. For good reason; at every turn, Kadleck puts the music first, and more than takes care of business. He graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in 1989 and quickly hit the road with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Blood Sweat & Tears, and others. Eventually, Kadleck was in such high demand locally, for studio and stage work, that touring took a back seat. He played on countless jingles, scores for TV and film, and worked with the cream of the crop, including Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Issac Hayes, and most recently Steely Dan, Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga, Santana, Weezer, Steve Tyrell, and many, many others. In addition to an on-going abundance of freelance sideman work with NYC's A-list artists, Kadleck is currently a member of many organizations, including the New York Pops, John Pizzarelli's “Swing Seven”, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, John Fedchock's NY Big Band, and can currently be heard on Broadway in the band for “MJ”.     To say that Kadleck is a rare bird is a major understatement. Possessing the expertise, musical acumen, phrasing, range, chops, and the desire to handle gigs as diverse as the New York Pops and The Who (for example) with straight-ahead professionalism and excellence is not common. His prowess now bears fruit on his own project, Sides (to be released on Marshall Gilkes' Alternate Side Records on February 10, 2023), which follows up his previous big band album, Around The Horn, and his debut as a leader, Extended Outlook.

The Death of Rhythm & Blues” 中对它的解释 :”The term originated in the 1940s as a description of a synthesis of black musical genres—gospel, big-band swing, blues—that, along with new technology, specifically the popularization of the electric bass, produced a propulsive, spirited brand of popular music. A decade later it would be called rock & roll to camouflage its black roots, and subsequently soul, funk, disco, rap, and other offspring would arise from these roots.” Stax Records 幕后的 house band,以及Issac Hayes, David Porter 带来了最强劲的灵魂乐制作水准; 60s末 70s初,Marvin Gaye 推出了”What's Going On” (1971),是他个人的分水岭作品; Stevie Wonder 在合成器领域贡献极大,是一位融合多种风格的奇才,并且他的catalogue 也有一部分界线作品就是”Music of My Mind”(1972),与 Marvin Gaye一样,他们的创作历史都跨越了了60s和70s 不同的灵魂风格; 黑人音乐的常青树 The Isley Brothers 作品贯穿了50s 至 00s 不同时期的风格; 70s 还有一种更加抒情的流派 Quiet Storm,代表人物 Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie; Playlist: Bessie Smith "Down Hearted Blues" (1923) Louis Jordan - “Caldonia “(1946) Ray Charles “What'd I Say, Pt.1&2” (1959) Sam Cooke - “A Change is Gonna Come “(1963) The Marvelettes - “Please Mr. Postman” (1961) Booker T & the M G 's - “Green Onions” (1962) Stevie Wonder - ”Superstition”(1972) Teddy Pendergrass - “Love T.K.O.”(1980)

Listen to the 38th edition of Free City Radio which features an interview with writer and researcher Sindi-Leigh McBride speaking on the Medu Art Ensemble and legacies of artistic resistance in southern Africa within the context of the anti apartheid struggle and beyond. Recently Sindi-Leigh wrote an article for The New Frame on Medu, this is an excerpt : https://www.newframe.com/long-read-the-anti-apartheid-posters-of-medu/ Poet laureate of South Africa and founding member of the Medu Art Ensemble, Mongane Wally Serote, situates the origins of the ensemble by describing the context that gave rise to it: “Like the European colonial rulers, the architects of apartheid held a gun in one hand and a Bible in the other as they targeted and attempted to destroy the culture of indigenous Africans and all freedom-loving people. In opposition to such divisive tactics, Medu Art Ensemble originated in forms of unity and solidarity.” In SeSotho, medu means roots. It's a fitting visual image for the collective that operated from Gaborone, Botswana, between 1979 and 1985 – and particularly for the underground dissemination of screen-printed and offset lithography posters for which Medu is best known. It is also a fitting description of Medu's organically evolved organisational structure. The collective was comprised of more than 60 visual artists, performers and writers, mainly South African exiles but with members from Botswana, Canada, Cuba, Sweden and North America. The revolutionary collective was divided into six units: Publications and Research, Film, Photography, Theatre, Music and Graphics. Each unit had a life of its own, meeting to work and deciding on its own leadership structures and pace. Members often belonged to more than one unit, which similarly worked together. Medu members adopted the appellation “cultural workers”, choosing not to identify as artists because of the shared belief that as culture was of the people, it could not and should not be confined to the exclusionary art world of the apartheid era. Music on this episode by Issac Hayes. Free City Radio is hosted by Stefan @spirodon Christoff and is also a weekly radio broadcast on @radiockut, broadcasting at 90.3fm in Tiohtià:ke / Montréal on Wednesdays at 11h.
