In this eye-opening episode of the Why Intervention Podcast, host Christopher Doyle interviews Heather Hayes, founder and CEO of Heather R. Hayes and Associates, Inc., a master's level licensed counselor and board registered interventionist with over 35 years of experience in treating complex mental health issues and addictive disorders.   Guest's Info Heather Hayes is the founder and CEO of Heather R. Hayes & Associates, Inc. She is a Master's level Licensed Counselor in the State of Georgia, and Board Registered Interventionist (CIP). With over 35 years of experience in treating clients with complex mental health issues and the full spectrum of addictive disorders, she has worked with clients of all ages and specializes in the treatment of trauma. As the globe's most prominent authorities on these topics, she is widely-recognized for her trauma-informed responsive approach to intervention.   Highlights   The shocking truth about what's really behind "denial" in families affected by addiction – it's not what you think, and understanding this changes everything Why telling an addict to "just stop" is like telling someone with a broken leg to "just walk" – the crucial brain chemistry factor most families completely miss The dangerous trap of "compassion" that actually keeps your loved one stuck in addiction (and what real compassion looks like instead) The "cucumber to pickle" phenomenon that explains why some people can experiment with substances while others are instantly hooked How standard treatment models are catastrophically failing teenagers – and the minimum effective dosage required according to research that almost no one follows Why kicking someone out might be the worst thing you can do – but letting them stay could be equally destructive (and the precise third option that works) The internet trap that's sending thousands of desperate families into the hands of the highest bidder rather than the best help The revolutionary six-month family commitment that transformed Heather's entire approach to intervention Why today's drug landscape gives parents zero room for error – the terrifying reality of what's actually in street drugs now The hostage negotiation techniques Heather adapted for family intervention that change everything about how we approach resistance How trauma-informed care has completely revolutionized intervention – moving from confrontation to connection while maintaining boundaries The counterintuitive reason why bringing recovered addicts to speak to teens actually INCREASES drug experimentation   Listen now to discover why Heather Hayes is considered one of the foremost authorities on intervention and learn how her trauma-informed, responsive approach might be exactly what your family needs. Have you ever experienced grief or an unbearable season of loss? Whether it's the loss of someone you love, a relationship, or an unfulfilled dream, God wants to bring you peace and comfort and walk through this season with you. In this episode, Julie Davies, Licensed Counselor, and your co-host, Christie Myers, talk about finding God's comfort amidst grief and loss. They share personal stories of grief, the stages of grief, and the importance of community and connection in healing. This episode highlights how important faith is in coping with loss, finding joy in difficult seasons, and the promises of God that provide hope during difficult times. Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."   Takeaways Finding comfort in God is essential during grief. It's okay to feel sad about loss and brokenness. Jesus wept, showing us it's normal to grieve. God wants to bring us peace and comfort. Grief can manifest in various stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. It's important to let yourself experience grief fully. Depression can be a normal response to grief, but it should be monitored. Community support is crucial during times of loss. Joy can coexist with suffering and can be found in small moments. God's promises provide hope and strength in difficult times.   Chapters 00:00 Finding Comfort in Grief and Loss 02:51 Personal Stories of Grief and Healing 06:10 Understanding the Stages of Grief 08:49 Coping Mechanisms for Grief 12:08 The Role of Community in Healing 14:58 Joy Amidst Suffering 17:47 God's Promises in Times of Grief 20:47 The Gospel and Finding Hope   Visit our website. How does your nonprofit take care of its employees? Recent research shows that employees who strongly agree their employer cares about their overall well-being (compared with those who don't) are 71% less likely to report high levels of burnout, leading to happier and more productive employees. In this episode, I spoke with special guest, Melissa Wesner, Licensed Counselor, about how nonprofit leaders can create a culture of wellness that benefits both employees and your bottom line.  Melissa shared a ton of strategies and resources leadership teams can use to cultivate this wellness culture like how to prevent burnout, the importance of addressing your own well-being, and setting strong boundaries. In a therapy-centric culture, it can be hard to differentiate between biblical truth and secular psychology (some aspects of which are at complete odds with each other). Anytime I speak to the importance of addressing this phenomenon from a biblical perspective, I get one of two responses: 1. “Thank you for speaking up,” or 2. “Please don't talk about this. You'll keep people from getting the help they need.” So, which is it? Is it possible to question the “everybody needs therapy” narrative and examine it in the light of Scripture without hindering those who really do need professional counseling? To help answer that question, I invited my friend, Amy Waters, who is a Bible-Believing professional counselor and owner of her own wellness practice called Living Well, on the show to discuss things like the overuse of the Three Ts (therapy, triggers, and trauma), what it looks like to shine the light of Capital T Truth on them, and how we can discern if we need therapy or just need to find better community.  I love her compassionate, measured, and, above all, biblical approach to this topic, and I think everyone who listens to this conversation will benefit greatly from the back-and-forth between two women who love the Lord first and really want to see women (and everyone else!) thrive in their God-given callings, however that can best be achieved in a biblical way.  P.S. I mention in this episode that Hard Is Not the Same Thing as Bad comes out next week, BUT, that's actually THIS week. It released yesterday, and is available just about everywhere books are sold! Whether it's the loss of a loved one, a relationship, your health, a job, and so much more. Loss can be very difficult. And what can unfortunately happen is in the midst of the pain and grief which so often accompanies these losses we can easily grow overwhelmed as our identity seems threatened. However, thankfully, our guests today have developed a powerful resource that they discuss in detail involving their new book titled, I Used to Be: Navigating Large & Small Losses in Life to Find Your Way Forward, which you can preorder NOW - https://www.chuckandashley.com/ or buy in store August 15, 2023.
