One of the promises of new technology is to simplify complex paper-based processes and create efficiencies while reducing costs and eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse. Each of the fifty states has a unique way for people to submit unemployment insurance claims. This made it a nightmare to communicate with the Department of Labor. Akanksha Sharma, Department of Labor, led a team that solved the problem through an identity verification system that could be layered over the varying state systems to have a single source of individual information, reducing waste and fraud. On the other side of the globe, family members living in on-site residences had issues with submitting claims—a similar situation, several bases, all with unique ways of processing work orders. Kevin Adler from ServiceNow outlined how a system was developed that allows individuals to make claims using their phones. Changing to a digital process enabled administrators to leverage prebuilt workflows. This transitioned away from cumbersome paper forms and enabled leaders to drastically reduce the time it takes to solve problems with military families. Both scenarios demonstrate how technology can transform a situation, facilitate feedback, and offer flexibility in reporting as well.
Kevin Adler grew up with a beloved uncle, Mark, who never forgot to send him a Hallmark card on his birthday. Over time, Kevin learned that his uncle was unhoused and suffering from schizophrenia. When Mark died at the age of 50, Kevin decided that working to solve the crisis of homelessness would be his life's work. The experience of having a close relative in this predicament made him realize that “everybody is somebody's somebody,” and deserving of our compassion. He founded Miracle Messages, a nonprofit working to tell the stories of individuals who are unhoused, in hopes of connecting and reuniting them with estranged friends and family. To date, they have facilitated more than 800 people and have created a phone buddy system where volunteers communicate weekly with their assigned partner, building relationships where none existed before. Kevin Adler tells this story in his new book, When We Walk By, and shares many of these stories in this episode, while also describing his optimistic views on basic income and affordable housing programs. Chapters: 03:09 The Personal Journey Begins Kevin recounts his personal connection to homelessness through his Uncle Mark, whose struggles profoundly influenced his life's work. This emotional story sets the stage for Kevin's mission to humanize those experiencing homelessness. 05:19 The Crisis of Shared Humanity Kevin discusses the dual crises of inadequate service systems and a lack of shared humanity in addressing homelessness. 08:12 The Jeffrey Story Kevin shares the poignant story of Jeffrey, a man he helped reconnect with his family after years of separation. 12:00 Understanding Relational Poverty The conversation shifts to the concept of relational poverty, emphasizing the importance of social connections in preventing homelessness. 16:39 Challenging Stereotypes Kevin discusses the harmful stereotypes surrounding homelessness and the diverse experiences of those affected. 19:54 Miracle Messages Programs Kevin elaborates on the various programs of Miracle Messages, including family reunification and the Miracle Friends Phone Buddy program. 25:00 The Impact of Basic Income The discussion turns to the controversial topic of basic income, with Kevin sharing insights from his organization's pilot program. 30:01 Rethinking Assistance: The Impact of Basic Income In this chapter, Kevin Adler discusses the misconceptions surrounding financial assistance for the homeless, emphasizing that many recipients prioritize housing and basic needs over substance use. 32:01 Success Metrics: Measuring Impact Adler shares the positive outcomes of Miracle Messages' programs, revealing that 80% of reunions lead to improved health and social conditions. 34:17 The Cost of Homelessness: A Financial Perspective This chapter dives into the financial implications of homelessness, comparing the costs of emergency services for unhoused individuals to the potential savings of providing basic income. 36:47 The Affordable Housing Crisis Adler tackles the pressing issue of affordable housing, discussing the systemic underinvestment and barriers faced by those in need. 39:13 Lessons from History: The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Drawing parallels between the 1906 earthquake and today's homelessness crisis, Adler illustrates how collective trauma can lead to community resilience and action. 46:15 Taking Action: How You Can Help In this chapter, Adler encourages listeners to engage with their communities and challenge misconceptions about homelessness.
“Society has already defined them (the homeless) for us; you'd never see me as a housed person, yet their identity is their lack of housing.” - Kevin Adler ------------------------------------------------------------------- In a truly meaningful episode of "Joseph Jaffe is not Famous," I had the honor of hosting Kevin Adler, the passionate author of "When We Walk By" and a social entrepreneur dedicated to transforming lives. Our conversation delved deep into the stark realities of homelessness, challenging societal perceptions and exploring actionable solutions Some of the key takeaways from this episode include: Homelessness is a complex issue that reduces people's identities and humanity in society's view. Building empathy and relational connections with those experiencing homelessness is important for addressing the issue. Challenging stereotypes like the "homeless to Harvard" narrative is important to avoid further stigmatization. Rebuilding social support systems and providing financial assistance are key parts of addressing homelessness. Individual acts of kindness and recognizing humanity in others can help shift perspectives. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are the show notes: Homelessness and its impact with a social entrepreneur. (4:49) Fame, acting, and a 20-minute conversation with John Cleese. (11:30) Reducing homelessness by recognizing individual identities. (16:16) Homelessness and the complexity of choice vs. circumstance. (23:18) The American dream and individualism, with a critique of the self-made man myth. In this episode, Kevin F. Kevin shares how he began his project where 24 unhoused individuals wore GoPro cameras to document their daily experience, and how this led to Miracle Messages—an organization that reconnects unhoused people with their loved ones. How to deal the American crisis of homelessness? Late last year, Kevin Adler, the San Francisco based homeless activist and author of When We Walk By, came on the show to argue that we should all personally interact with the unhoused. Alexander Gorlin, an award winning architect, and Victoria Newhouse, an architectural historian, look at the problem in a more traditionally top-down manner. Co-editors of the new Housing the Nation: Social Equity, Architecture and the Future of Affordable Housing, their focus is on building more affordable homes for the unhoused, financed both through the public and private sectors. In contrast with Kevin Adler, who wants us to befriend the homeless, the upperclass Manhattanites Gorlin and Newhouse see the solution in conventionally political rather than personal terms. Neither of them see the problem as one of the American capitalist system itself which might not be surprising since they are both products and beneficiaries of this system. Alexander Gorlin is an architect, scholar, critic, and a leader in the design of affordable housing. Alexander Gorlin Architects are the recipients of the 2023 Best Downstate Residence of the Year award from the New York State Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH).Victoria Newhouse is author of Rizzoli's Parks of the 21st Century: Reinvented Landscapes, Reclaimed Territories.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Read the full transcript here. How big of a problem is homelessness in the US? How many people in large cities like New York City or Los Angeles are unhoused? What's the best language to use when discussing this issue? How is "homelessness" defined? We usually don't label people without food or water as "foodless" or "waterless"; so why do we label people without homes as "homeless"? Why do we so often look away from the problem, both literally and figuratively? What are the most common events or circumstances that cause people to lose their housing options? What does research show about how unhoused people actually spend their money? What percentage of an average city's unhoused population is represented by the "visible" portion, the people we see on street corners or in tent camps? What percent of unhoused people struggle with mental health problems or substance abuse? What's the average life expectancy of an unhoused person? How much do governments (local, state, and/or federal) spend on homelessness annually? What's the best predictor of whether or not a person will suffer from chronic homelessness? What help — from government institutions, religious organizations, nonprofits, etc. — is available to unhoused people? How hard is it to meet your basic needs when you don't have a place to live? What should we do about unhoused people who refuse help or treatment for mental illnesses or substance abuse? Which nonprofits are working on homelessness? And what kinds of impacts have they made? What interventions are actually effective at solving homelessness on a large scale? What mistakes have the political left and right (in the US) made as they've tried to address homelessness? Demographically speaking, what kinds of people tend to make up unhoused populations in the US?Kevin F. Adler is a social entrepreneur, sociologist, and author who never learned the word "stranger", and tries to live accordingly. Currently, he is the Founder-In-Residence and Chairman of the Board of Miracle Messages, a nonprofit organization that helps people experiencing homelessness rebuild their social support systems and financial security through family reunification services, a phone buddy program, and the first basic income pilot for unhoused individuals in the US. He is also the bestselling author of When We Walk By: Forgotten Humanity, Broken Systems, and the Role We Can Each Play in Ending Homelessness in America, which Publishers Weekly called "a must-read for anyone interested in solving the problem of homelessness." Kevin's pioneering work on homelessness and "relational poverty" as an overlooked form of poverty has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, PBS NewsHour, The Guardian, LA Times, and in his TED Talk. Motivated by his late mother's work teaching at underserved adult schools and nursing homes, and his late uncle's 30 years living on the streets, Kevin believes in a future where everyone is seen as invaluable and interconnected. Adler is the co-author of When We Walk By, which argues that we have sacrificed our humanity by ignoring, downplaying, and refusing to address the homelessness problem. The authors offer an evidence-based people-first approach and community-driven solutions, and they lay out some practical steps that individuals can take to address homelessness. Kevin Adler is an award-winning social entrepreneur, nonprofit leader, and author. Since 2014, he has served as the founder and CEO of Miracle Messages, a nonprofit organization that helps people experiencing homelessness rebuild their social support systems and financial security, primarily through family reunifications, a phone buddy program, and basic income pilots. Kevin F. Adler, author and founder of Miracle Messages, shares highlights of his newest book When We Walk By, in which he and his collaborators present the creation of a new system whereby working together, we do not walk by or away from our houseless neighbors, but rather become friends. And, by doing so we learn how to help them -- and thereby also help ourselves -- to grow into greater compassion for all as we work towards ending homelessness.

“Everyone's someone's somebody.” That's the tagline of Miracle Messages, a nonprofit organization tackling homelessness by rekindling relationships and reconstructing support systems. Inspired by his Uncle Mark, CEO Kevin Adler launched Miracle Messages in 2014. Growing up, Kevin watched his beloved and loyal uncle, who suffered from schizophrenia, battle homelessness on-and-off for 30 years. When Mark passed away at the age of 50, Kevin's family ensured that Mark's life would never be forgotten within their own family. However, Kevin realized that while his uncle was lucky to have a family to remember and support him, thousands of others living on the streets were not connected to their family members or friends. Kevin and Miracle Messages volunteers offer homeless individuals a chance to reconnect with their family members and friends. Through Miracle Message's reunion service, they have helped reunite over 425 people experiencing homelessness with support systems from which they have been separated, sometimes for decades. Dozens of reunions have resulted in individuals moving off the streets. Miracle Messages' buddy system has also connected members of the homeless population with volunteers who offer companionship and support through calls and text messages. They provide cell phones so homeless individuals can stay in touch, and are experimenting on a small scale with universal basic income for those who are homeless. Our CEO, Dr. Gloria Duffy, will join Kevin for a conversation addressing how homelessness can be addressed on the individual and familial level. This topic is deeply personal for Gloria, as it is for Kevin, since a family member of hers has battled homelessness. Over the past 15 years, Gloria and her family have developed a system that supports her relative with a home and other basic needs. Please join us as Kevin and Gloria reimagine how we fight homelessness, and learn how Miracle Messages has reunited hundreds of families. SPEAKERS Kevin F. I think sometimes people make the assumption that if someone is unhoused, there's nothing in common with someone who's housed. And that's a real misnomer because I feel like we're all, ultimately one paycheck away from being unhoused - Jen RoyIn this episode, our featured voices are the Founder and CEO of Miracle Messages, Kevin Adler, Miracle Messages Friend Program volunteer Jen Roy along with Miracle Money Program participant Ray.The pandemic has exposed how fragile the economic health is of most American households especially our black and brown households. City of Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs was the first government leader to believe in his community members and created a privately funded universal basic income pilot called the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration. The data from the 2019 pilot showed that providing residents $500 per month that they spent on food, rent, utilities and car repairs for example helped stabilize their households. For more background on Mayor Tubbs and the pilot please listen to Episode 12 from our documentary series "Stockton's Rise From Bankruptcy".Mayor Tubbs has gone on to create the "Mayors for Guaranteed Income" program with Mayors from California to Georgia signing on to the program. Since Tubb's Stockton experiment, Oakland, Marin County, San Francisco, and Santa Clara County started one to two-year universal basic income programs. The pilot programs provide participants between $500 to $1,000 guaranteed dollars every month with no strings attached. Most of these initial pilots like Tubbs's Stockton pilot are being funded by private donations. On July 15th California lawmakers approved the nation's first state-funded guaranteed income program that once Governor Newsom signs the bill cities and counties can apply for funding to support a current pilot or a new program from the $35 million dollar fund.

We thought it would be helpful if you had more background on Miracle Message so we're rebroadcasting our interview with Kevin in episode one from the summer of 2020. “Food insecurity is just one challenge that our participants face” - Katy McKnightOur second voice is the Director of Community Engagement with the San Francisco Marin Food Bank Katy McKnight. Since the original broadcast of this interview the demand for food has continued to expand with San Francisco Marin Food Bank distributing 1 million 300 hundred thousand meals each week. The food bank is operating 27 emergency pop up pantries at schools and community centers to address the massive food in-security facing our neighbors and is distributing food to 55 to 60 thousand households. To help feed homebound seniors who used to visit San Francisco Marin Food Bank pantries for groceries they have created the Pantry at Home program to deliver food directly to nine thousand plus seniors.

In this episode we feature the voice of Kevin Adler, the Founder and CEO of Miracle Messages. Kevin started Miracle Messages in honor of his uncle Mark, who lived on-and-off the streets for 30 years. Miracle Messages helps reunite families through helping community members who are unhoused to record short video messages to a family member. Volunteers, referring nonprofit and government partners or formerly homeless ambassadors help record the message. Then a network of volunteer digital detectives attempt to locate the unhoused person’s family to deliver the message. The digital detectives also work with the family and the unhoused person to facilitate a reunion. As of the recording of this episode Miracle Messages has facilitated over 325 family reunifications.

First of all, you have to forgive me on this audio, I recorded this episode on the street and Fred’s voice and mine sounds far away. I did not bring any regular mike in order to avoid catching all street sounds (this was not a recording about street sounds). On this episode, that I upload today (two days before Saturday) is very important to me since it is one of those festivals that takes place close to our new home. If you happened to follow me on all social media, you might have noticed that I have been promoting Takoma Park Folk Festival, a music event that will take place this September 8, 2019 at Takoma Park, Maryland. This episode was recorded at Takoma Beverage Company (thank you to Seth Cook for allowing to do this in your shop – SUPPORT LOCAL STORES, that should be our hashtag). In addition, a big thank you to Kelly Diamond, one of the guests in this episode, for inviting Kevin Adler and Fred Stollnitz to be part of this episode where we talk about TPFF, history, what would take place this Sept. 8, 2019 and how magic is done in order that this Festival could celebrate its 40th Anniversary. I want to thank all three of my guests for their time and patience during its recording and to Seth for his kindness. Without all of you this episode could not be done. I am indebted to all of you. Kevin Adler!! Kevin Adler started his professional career in the tech industry, eventually deciding to make a difference by getting into education. On his walks home from work, he witnessed widespread homelessness in his neighborhood. One day Kevin decided to not just walk by like everyone else...he stopped and began talking to people and listening to their stories. After an epiphany moment, he realized how we could use social media to create good. That’s where Miracle Messages was born. Read the full blog at http://thisismyera.com/blogs/podcast/ep-32-miraclemessages
Miracle Messages uses social media to try to connect homeless people in San Francisco with long-lost love ones in hopes of getting them back home with someone who cares about them. They’ve matched nearly 200 pairs, but founder Kevin Adler says the city could do more to help. Heather Knight interviews Adler and joins him downtown as he and his fellow "ambassadors" talk to people living on the streets. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Key Takeaways: To start off, thank you for being with me on Insights. We always have great guests on our Monday shows, people who are doing amazing things for people in their communities. The Giving Back Insights episodes are a way to share what I’m learning along the way in the hope of continuing the conversation about how you and I can make a difference in people’s lives. Sometimes the Insights shows veer toward my own journey of creating a life of purpose and meaning, and I appreciate you hanging with me and the terrific comments I’ve received. Much mahalo to everyone. The impact of an emergency or terrible circumstances is always felt most deeply when it’s close to home. When it’s personal, it’s our own story. It’s also when we’re most likely to jump in and get busy ourselves, whether it’s donating, volunteering, or participating in some way that will help solve the problem. On Thursday I joined Kevin Adler and some members of the Miracle Messages crew on a Street Walk through San Francisco’s Tenderloin District. It’s a weekly event to hand out food, engage in conversations, and help people reconnect with their loved ones. That happy fella on today’s cover is Brian, and his t shirt is the slogan of Miracle Messages: Everyone is someone’s somebody. #StreetWalks @MiracleMessages The Tenderloin is a rough area; there are lots of homeless people, lots of drug use, and lots of mental health issues. It is also, as Kevin reminded us, one of MANY neighborhoods across the US struggling with homelessness. Over 536,000 people in America went to sleep that night without a shelter. The challenge is to move beyond the number and the stereotypes and to remember that each of our unsheltered neighbors is a mother, father, son, daughter, niece, nephew, uncle and aunt. That’s what makes an issue, a problem, a cause --- important to us personally and keeps us engaged. All of us came to Street Walk on Thursday to remember that “they” are us. Each of us came in from different backgrounds and for different reasons to serve where those in need are at. Some of us were challenged by the harsh reality of life on the streets, some us challenged in our beliefs. All of us came with the conviction that everyone is someone’s somebody. Brian and Kevin did a fine job keeping us all safe, helped as much by people on the street who know them and Miracle Messages’ mission as their own presence and direction. We passed out food, engaged in conversations, played some music, and recorded videos for a couple of people who want to reconnect with their loved ones. Imagine being apart from family for 10, 20, even 30 years. Miracle Messages has fostered 150+ reconnections and are going strong with over 80% positive reunions. Listening to each of the night’s crew talk about their experience at our debrief after our walk, I felt a deep gratitude for what I have in my life. That I have an abundance and can share SOMETHING with someone who needs a hand up is a blessing. I also felt a profound sense of appreciation for each person who came out that night to support Miracle Messages. Each of them came to serve and make a difference in someone’s somebody. I wanted to connect them to the impact they have so I shared a short text between my brother Tom and me that we exchanged that very night. A simple “Hello” and setting up a breakfast get together. So normal, so absolutely mundane, right? I hadn’t seen Tom in over 20 years until Miracle Messages reconnected us. I missed him terribly, and I cherish every moment we’re together. Brett, Nim, Brian, Katie Beverly, Emme, Nancy, Fernanda, Jen Kelly, Kevin and all the staff, volunteers and supporters of Miracle Messages: Thank you for giving me my brother back. He’s my somebody. Special thanks to Salesforce for providing a wonderful venue for Miracle Messages’ first annual Un-gala! Special shout out to Kevin Adler for kicking off the donations by raising his paddle to fully support reuniting a family. Major kudos to Union Square for their new partnership with Miracle Messages to reunite our unsheltered neighbors with their loved ones. HUGE thanks and love to Nancy for putting me and my bro back together. To Kevin, Jessica and all the staff, volunteers, Detectives, Ambassadors and supporters of Miracle Messages, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Ask yourself, where would you be without family and friends? The answer, too often, is homeless and possibly on the streets. Miracle Messages helps people experiencing homelessness to record short videos for their long-lost relatives. They use social media and volunteers to locate their loved ones and try to deliver the messages as a way of reuniting families. Restoring those relationships at the beginning of a recovery process is the goal, and they hope to unite 1% of the world’s homeless population with their relatives by 2021. How cool would it be to use our cell phones not only for texting and selfies but also as a tool to help end homelessness and help our neighbors in need. Today we’re joined by Kevin Adler, the Founder and CEO of Miracle Messages. Kevin joins us to share how this idea came about, some stories of family reunions, and how they plan to reach their audacious goal.
