Send us Fan MailWhat's up PE Nation!Today I share how we run Striker Ball for K-5 and why it fits so well as a follow-up to Foursquare and Gaga Ball. I break down the setup, the rules that keep it safe and fair, and the simple ways we teach kids to settle disputes fast. • why Striker Ball works as a progression from Foursquare and Gaga Ball • simple setup using medium cones and court circles • objective of scoring through cone goals while defending your own • ball height rule to keep strikes low and controlled • rotations for K to 1 to keep play simple • numbered positions and serving rotation for grades 2 to 5 • “no neighbor outs” rule to prevent cheap scores and teach awareness • dispute process using group voting or replaying the point Take care,Dave-Check out supersizedphysed.com for more resources, including free PDFs, articles, and courses to help with your PE program. Send us Fan MailWelcome to Summer,Today I lay out a simple way to rest during summer break while still coming back ready to serve students better. I use the three Rs reflect, refocus, and regroup to review what worked, fix what didn't, and build a real plan instead of repeating last year. • reflecting on the previous school year with pluses, minuses, changes, and keepers • building a PE culture that stays fun and educational • using a wristband-style student leadership program to create ownership and responsibility • dealing with tight equipment budgets, missed grants, and making do with what you have • spotting games and routines that feel stale and deciding what to tweak or drop • refocusing the yearly calendar around weather, indoor days, and units like net games • adding new games, music, exercises, and better ways to run large-group flag football • planning bigger projects like a treasure hunt challenge, archery, and a bike trailer • regrouping with a written plan, backwards planning, and meetings with administration Take care,Dave-Check out supersizedphysed.com for more resources, including free PDFs, articles, and courses to help with your PE program. Send us Fan MailWelcome to Season Five! A wheel of cheese flying down a steep hill while grown adults cartwheel after it sounds fake, but it's real and it's our kind of “what did I just watch?” kickoff to season five. We start with summer creeping in, school schedules getting weird, and that parenting scramble where someone always has the wrong dismissal time. From there, we lean into the stories that make life feel lighter, even when everything is busy.We get into the Gloucestershire cheese rolling contest (unofficial but still unhinged), then move to internet food trends like the TikTok chip bag sandwich and a product we can't stop thinking about for all the wrong reasons: the Hellmann's mayo bow tie, a wearable condiment dispenser that should probably come with a warning label. If you love pop culture, viral trends, and the humor hidden in everyday life, you'll feel right at home.Things turn surprisingly thoughtful when we talk friendship and trust through the “two beers and a puppy” test. It's a simple way to name the difference between the friends you have fun with and the friends you'd trust with something that matters. We also debate whether the modern handbag is fading out as pockets, briefcases, and cargo shorts surge, and we share what's actually inside our bags. Add in a creepy seven-foot puppet found on a Massachusetts lawn, some pure 90s nostalgia (Five Alive, High-C, Ecto Cooler), and a quick dive into the origin of the high five, and you've got a season opener packed with laughs and real-life warmth. If you enjoy funny, relatable conversations about motherhood, friendship, and modern life, subscribe, share this with a friend who'd pass the puppy test, and leave a review so more people can find us. When a student behaves in a way that disrupts their own learning or someone else's, our response is often limited to a reprimand or a punishment. While this usually stops the undesirable behavior for a while, it doesn't often solve the problem long-term. What has longer-lasting impact is viewing the misbehavior as a sign that a student is missing an important skill, and if they are taught that skill, the behavior should naturally improve. In this episode, we learn more about what this approach looks like in practice from Nathan Maynard, educator and author of the new book, The Science of Discipline. ___________________________ Thanks to Listenwise and Erikson Institute for sponsoring the episode.
