Global containerliners, however, face a tougher outlook, with freight rates struggling to find support amid capacity growth outpacing demand. In this bonus episode of the Talking Transports podcast Bloomberg Intelligence senior freight transportation and logistics analyst Lee Klaskow hosts a panel with Fredrik Dybwad of Fearnley Securities and Kristoffer Barth Skeie of Arctic Securities. The analysts discuss rates, trade tensions, emissions goals, order books and their top investment ideas across the global marine shipping industry. The panel was recorded at a Bloomberg Intelligence event during London International Shipping Week on Sept. 16.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode explores one of the world's greatest historical collections relating to the golden age of ocean liner travel. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with John Sayers, a man who has dedicated his life to creating the most wonderful collection. In the early 1950s John's parents took him across the Atlantic on the Cunard Line's RMS Franconia eastbound to the UK, and RMS Queen Elizabeth back westbound to America. Shortly after that he came across five souvenir ocean liner lapel pins at a Sunday morning antiques fair and from that moment on his career as a collector began. What started with lapel pins and then souvenir spoons and napkin rings soon moved onto ephemera - printed bits and pieces relating to everyday life on board ship - a crucial source of historic material that helps us reconstruct the lived experience of those aboard, both passengers and crew. That collection, which includes posters, tickets, brochures, sailing schedules, letters written on board, passenger lists, menus, advertising material (the list really is endless) – is now held in the John Johnson collection at the Bodleian Library in Oxford and to illustrate it John has written a fabulous new book: Secrets of the Great Ocean Liners. While Republican candidates in many states downplay their opposition to abortion, the most vehement wing of the movement, which helped overturn Roe v. Wade — those who advocate prosecuting patients, outlawing contraception, and banning IVF — are increasingly outspoken. Meanwhile, some state legislatures continue to advance new restrictions, like a proposal moving in Louisiana to include abortion medications mifepristone and misoprostol on the list of the most dangerous drugs. Alice Miranda Ollstein of Politico, Rachel Roubein of The Washington Post, and Joanne Kenen of the Johns Hopkins schools of public health and nursing and Politico Magazine join KFF Health News' Julie Rovner to discuss these stories and more. Also this week, Rovner interviews Shefali Luthra of The 19th about her new book on abortion in post-Roe America, “Undue Burden.” Plus, for “extra credit” the panelists suggest health policy stories they read this week that they think you should read, too: Julie Rovner: The 19th's “What Happens to Clinics After a State Bans Abortion? They Fight To Survive,” by Shefali Luthra and Chabeli Carrazana. Alice Miranda Ollstein: Stat's “How Doctors Are Pressuring Sickle Cell Patients Into Unwanted Sterilizations,” by Eric Boodman. Rachel Roubein: The Washington Post's “What Science Tells Us About Biden, Trump and Evaluating an Aging Brain,” by Joel Achenbach and Mark Johnson. Joanne Kenen: ProPublica's “Toxic Gaslighting: How 3M Executives Convinced a Scientist the Forever Chemicals She Found in Human Blood Were Safe,” by Sharon Lerner; and The Guardian's “Microplastics Found in Every Human Testicle in Study,” by Damian Carrington. The discussion covers the weather conditions, road and mountain biking opportunities, and the personal preferences of the participants. Other potential winter training locations, such as Miami and Kentucky, are also explored. The conversation takes a humorous turn with discussions on drop bar mountain bikes, bike shop sponsorships, and chain waxing experiences. In this part of the conversation, the hosts discuss chain waxing and the use of strip chips. They also talk about the upcoming BWR AZ gravel race and make predictions about the participants. They discuss the course and its technical aspects, as well as their training plans for the race. The conversation covers various topics including race registration, hookless rims, password management, using liners in crock pots for chain waxing, helmet color, and the best bike for the sea otter gravel race. This conversation covers topics such as the compatibility of bike components, the benefits of hiring a cycling coach, the value of coaching beyond training plans, the importance of communication with a coach, factors affecting tubeless tire performance, controversy surrounding team mechanics as riders, and the Transcortieres Ultra Gravel Race. Takeaways: Consider adding a 'who's registered' tab on race registration websites for better transparency. The controversy around hookless rims for road racers highlights the lack of standardization and compatibility. Use password managers to securely store and manage passwords. Liners can be used in crock pots for easier chain waxing. The color of a helmet does not significantly impact its cooling properties. Choose a bike suitable for the specific race course and conditions. Consider the impact on bike geometry and performance when mixing and matching components. Hiring a cycling coach can provide objective guidance, support, and motivation. Coaches offer more than just training plans, providing valuable insights and assistance in goal setting and accomplishment. Effective communication with a coach can enhance the training and racing experience. Factors such as rim tape and rim type can affect the performance of tubeless tires. The controversy surrounding team mechanics as riders highlights the importance of adhering to race regulations. The Transcortieres Ultra Gravel Race is gaining attention in the gravel racing community. Different bike types may affect power output due to rider positioning and familiarity.
