Happy Pride my friends, especially to the LGBTQ+ members in our community! To celebrate Pride, I wanted to share an episode from my Bite-Sized Black History program that features a Black American who was LGBTQ+. So today, we're learning about Glenn Burke, who was the first openly gay Major League Baseball player! Glenn Burke was an amazing athlete and always the life of the party. He wasn't afraid to be his authentic self, even when people were discriminating against him. He is even credited with creating the high-five!  Glenn's life was cut short by AIDS, and I've included in this episode some insights and lessons I learned from an LGBTQ+ activist for talking to kids about AIDS, which I hope are helpful to you as a parent, teacher or caregiver.  And I hope by listening to Glenn's story and reflecting on his life that we can be part of creating change so that others don't have to go through the same things he did.    Get your FREE coloring page to go along with the episode Glenn Burke's story is part of my Bite-Sized Black History program, where I feature 28 different Black Americans who you may have heard of but who have largely been overlooked in the history books. This week Josh tells Tom about Glenn Burke and Billy Bean (not the one you're thinking of) who were two baseball players who after their playing days came out as gay.  Both had very rough stories for very different reasons -- none of which had to do with them being mediocre players or Burke creating the high five (seriously).  While we make a couple of jokes, we will warn you that this does get a bit heavy, but if we're a baseball history podcast, then it's a story to cover.

Heavy Head Season Three Trailer.    Excited & proud to announce the return of Heavy Head Podcast for its third & final season beginning New Years Day 2023.    Instead of focusing on individual mental health conditions, this last season we will attempt to answer two big questions. Where does stigma come from & how has our perception of what constitutes a mental illness changed over time?   To answer this question, we will look at six historical events in my home country of the United States where people were discriminated against, persecuted, or killed for the way they looked, felt, or behaved.    EP 1: “Our First American Kin.” (Jan 1) The white, European colonization of America & resulting genocide of the indigenous populations that lived here.   EP 2: “Witchcraft In The Whispers.” (Feb 1) The Salem Witch Trails of 1692.    EP 3: “A Fruit For The Crows To Pluck.” (March 1) The lynching of African Americans in 19th & 20th centuries.   EP 4: “If You Tolerate This Then Your Children Will be Next.” (April 1) The forced internment of Japanese Americans during WWII.    EP 5: “Are They Supposed To Be As Sick As You And Me?” (May 1) The medical experimentations on institutionalized persons of the mid 20th century.    EP 6: “Lovers In A Dangerous Time.” (June 1) The story of MLB's first openly gay player, Glenn Burke & the H.I.V/A.I.D.S crisis of the 80's/90's.    Catch up on the first two seasons now.    The award-winning Heavy Head Podcast returns for its farewell season beginning Sunday January 1, 2023.

Welcome to April 21, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate high fives and a garden for kids.  If you've ever given someone a high five—and who hasn't?—you can thank the Los Angeles Dodgers. On October 2, 1977, Dusty Baker hit a home run to put the Dodgers ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in their playoff game. As he crossed home plate, his teammate Glenn Burke ran toward him with a hand in the air and slapped Baker's raised hand. This perfect bonding moment is widely regarded as the first ever High Five. The gesture has become so ubiquitous that it now feels like second nature in a moment of celebration. On National High Five Day, celebrate by putting your hands in the air and passing on the joy to a friend. If you really want to get crazy, go for the double high five.   Most of us know that kindergarten is where kids make the leap from learning at home to learning at school. This very important stage of child development was recognized by a German teacher, Friedrich Wilhelm August Frobel in 1837. He is credited with starting the first kindergarten in Blankenburg, Germany. Realizing that children learn through play and experience, his class was designed to ease the transition at this crucial stage of life. Here in the United States, the first kindergarten was opened in Watertown, Wisconsin in 1856, but it wasn't formally adopted nationwide until 1873. On National Kindergarten Day, we celebrate those special first teachers who make a difference in the lives of our children.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. We are celebrating the opening week of Lovell's most recent feature film, the romantic comedy "The End of Us," and we're honored to welcome his fellow producer, Claudia Restrepo, to discuss the wild ride of making this movie. Shot during April 2020 in those first weeks of the pandemic, "The End of Us" premiered at SXSW in March, and it is now available for audiences everywhere, all thanks to Claudia's stunning efforts as the film's producer... and production designer... and cast member... As Claudia informs us, pandemic filmmaking requires an artist to wear a lot of hats, but no one could have been more prepared for that job than Claudia. Claudia also reflects on her time as a creator and performer at BuzzFeed in those roaring days before the digital content bubble burst, and then we look forward to what creative endeavors she's aiming to tackle as a writer/director now that she's produced her first feature film. Plus, you'll never believe the remarkable connection that Roger and Claudia discover that they share live on the air, and we also litigate the politics of regifting just in time for the holidays (spoiler alert: Joanne made a faux pas...). Go on Instagram to follow Claudia at @clauddog, plus learn everything you can about the folx highlighted in this week's Gayborhood Watch: baseball player Glenn Burke, historian Eric Cervini and his book "The Deviant's War: The Homosexual vs. The United States of America," and creator Curly Velasquez. And don't forget to follow @rogerq.mason, @lovell.holder, @miachanger, and @dgonzalezmusic on Instagram for all your Gayborhood updates and check out "The End of Us" on all major VOD platforms!

Andrew Maraniss is a great storyteller. He writes sports books but not your stereotypical odes to star athletes. His books, while easy to read, have depth. They educate you and make you think about various socio-cultural issues, from a historical perspective as well as how they continue to impact society today. His first book, "Strong Inside," was a biography of Perry Wallace, the first Black basketball player in the SEC. His second book, "Games of Deception," is the story of the first U.S. men's basketball team at the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. His most recent book, "Singled Out," is a biography of Glenn Burke, the first openly gay Major League Baseball player and inventor of the high five. It was recently named one of the 100 Best Baseball Books Ever Written by Esquire Magazine. In this episode, we chat about all three books, including interesting stories he came across in putting each book together, but we focus on "Singled Out" and Glenn Burke's life before, during, and after his MLB career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland A's. I think you'll enjoy listening to Maraniss, a good guy with some important stories to share.

Well, the Olympics are giving us some great performances and amazing story lines, so we have dialed up an encore presentation of our 2020 conversation with a true grandson of Madison, Andrew Maraniss, about his award-winning book Games of Deception, the True Story of the First U.S. Olympic Basketball Team, and the 1936 Olympics in Hitler's Germany. You all know what basketball is, you all know what the Olympics are, you all know who Hitler was. So that part doesn't need any more introduction. As to Andrew Maraniss. First of all, he is, as you may have surmised, the son of two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author David Maraniss and the pioneering environmentalist Linda Maraniss, born right here in Madison, now a resident of Brentwood, Tenn., with his wife Alison, and their two young children. David, of course, has also written a best-selling book about the Olympics, Rome 1960: The Olympics That Changed the World. I interviewed David about that book when it came out in 2008, but no longer have access to the audio. David has also written a book about Andrew's grandfather, the great journalist Elliott Maraniss, who I am proud to say   was also my former boss at the Capital Times. That interview, about David's book A Good American Family: The Red Scare and My Father was the pilot episode of MBB in 2019. You see how this all comes around? Like his father, Andrew is really good at telling historical and sports stories with a larger social message.  Games of Deception received the 2020 Association of Jewish Libraries Sydney Taylor Book Honors for middle grade readers and was named one of Amazon's Top Books of 2019. His first book, the New York Times-bestseller Strong Inside: Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race and Sports in the South, received the 2015 Lillian Smith Book Award and the lone Special Recognition honor at the 2015 RFK Book Awards, the first sports-related book so honored. The Young Reader edition was named one of the Top 10 Biographies and Top 10 Sports Books of 2017 by the American Library Association and was selected as a Notable Social Studies Book for 2019 by the National Council for the Social Studies. And, of course, you'll recall that Andrew was our guest in June for his new book about sports and society, Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke, the first gay ballplayer in major league baseball. Andrew is a contributor to ESPN's TheUndefeated.com. and Visiting Author at Vanderbilt University Athletics, where he was formerly the associate director of media relations – a lesson in the value of leaving a job on good terms. He was also the first-ever media relations manager for the Tampa Bay Rays. You can follow him on Twitter @trublu24 and visit his website at andrewmaraniss.com.

But Glenn also made history in another way--he was the first openly gay MLB player. While he did not come out publicly until after his playing days were over, Glenn's sexuality was known to his teammates, family, and friends. His MLB career would be cut short after only three years, but his legacy and impact on the athletic and LGBTQIA+ community would resonate for years to come. New York Times bestselling author Andrew Maraniss tells the story of Glenn Burke: from his childhood growing up in Oakland, his journey to the MLB and the World Series, the joy in discovering who he really was, to more difficult times: facing injury, addiction, and the AIDS epidemic. Packed with black-and-white photographs and thoroughly researched, never-before-seen details about Glenn's life, Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke (Philomel Books, 2021) is the fascinating story of a trailblazer in sports--and the history and culture that shaped the world around him. Paul Knepper used to cover the Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in September 2020. It's my career, not my hobby and, on this podcast, you'll learn from me and my amazing guests everything you need to know about writing for different genres, finding ideas, finding work, pitching editors and more, but most importantly, you'll learn about making money. Let's get started! Last week, I talked to Barbara Clarke about writing memoirs, and this week, I continue that conversation with another Erik Sherman who is on his 7th book working with professional athletes about their life stories. I had the pleasure to talk to Erik about his process, how he started working with these athletes and what else he does in his career. A little about Erik Sherman -- He has been writing professionally since he was 14 years old. He's the author of Out At Home, with former Dodgers and A's outfielder Glenn Burke, who invented the ‘high five' and died tragically of AIDS, is currently being made into a movie by actress/producer Jamie Lee Curtis through Amazon Studios.  Sherman is also the co-author of four other highly acclaimed baseball autobiographies with Steve Blass, Mookie Wilson, Davey Johnson, the 69 Mets, and his most recent book is Two Sides of Glory: The 1986 Boston Red Sox In Their Own Words which has an April 1, 2021 release date.  Erik is an annual lecturer at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.I hope you enjoy the interview.Well, that's it for this week's edition of The Write Start podcast. I talk to New York Times best-selling author, Andrew Marannis (@TruBlu24). His new book, Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke, is out now! Glenn Burke was the first openly gay MLB player and was the inventor of the high five. Burke deserves to be rightfully revered as an important social justice sports icon like Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali before him, and Colin Kaepernick after him.  Andrew talks to me about Glenn Burke coming of age in the 1950s and 60s Bay Area during the Civil Rights movement and the rise of the Black Panther Party; How Glenn Burke did not come out publicly during his brief three-year career,  but many of his teammates, family, and friends were aware of his sexuality; and how Burke was driven from the game due to homophobia but left an impact and legacy on and off the baseball diamond with the LGBTQ+ community for decades to come. Also, Andrew tells me the story of Glenn Burke inventing the high five with teammate and current Astros Manager Dusty Baker; how Glenn was also the first MLB player to rock some Nike's during an MLB game; and Glenn dealing with racism in the minor leagues, homophobia in the big leagues and society, and the AIDS epidemic. This week, I wrote a review of a wonderful new Glenn Burke biography called Singled Out. It's the most comprehensive examination to date of the life and times of the first openly gay player in MLB history and the numerous difficulties he faced during his all too brief career. On today's pod, I'm joined by Singled Out's author Andrew Maraniss to examine Burke's trailblazing legacy and the tragedies he endured in order to be true to himself in the conservative and close-minded world of late-70s baseball. Andrew recounts the incredible impact Burke made on teammates who embodied a range of personality types from Dusty Baker's coolness to Steve Garvey's "wholesome" image consciousness. We also discuss Burke's bravery in living an open gay life as a celebrity in San Francisco's Castro District at the same time Dodgers management did everything possible to keep it under wraps. Finally, Maraniss details the many prominent moments of post-Stonewall LGBTQ history that intersected with Burke's career. It's a fascinating conversation. And it's important that we tell all of Glenn Burke's story to pay proper tribute to his life--both the heroic and tragic aspects. You can purchase Singled Out here. New York Times Best selling author Andrew Maraniss is back on the pod to discuss his newest book, just out on March 2 (!!!!), entitled Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke. The book is about Glenn Burke, the first openly gay MLB Player and the inventor of the high five. This is an incredible and devastating story and couldn’t be more timely, as Democrats in the House of Representatives just passed the Equality Act, which is now on it’s way to the Senate and if passed by both chambers and signed into law by President Biden, would establish anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people. In addition, there are also several states that are currently in the process of trying to pass anti trans legislation in the area of sports. The story of Glenn Burke is ever relevant as we continue to fight for equal treatment for everyone, no matter their gender or sexual identity. Glenn Burke's journey through baseball began and ended in Oakland, California. His sports career had many stops along the way, starting as a multi-sport star at Berkeley High School, followed by a brief stint at the University of Nevada, Reno as a prized basketball recruit, and then moving into professional baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers, being hailed by one coach as "the next Willie Mays." Early in his career, Burke felt he had to hide his true self from his teammates. Later, when he began to reveal glimpses into his sexuality the baseball establishment began to close him out. Out. The Glenn Burke Story, a one-hour documentary produced by Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, tells the dramatic tale of Burke's legacy as the first openly homosexual Major League Baseball player. From his Major League debut in 1976 and starting Game One of the 1977 World Series for the Dodgers to subsequently being traded to the Oakland Athletics the next season, and then walking away in 1980 from the game that he deeply loved, Comcast SportsNet follows one of baseball's most dramatic arcs. Many of Burke's teammates were aware of his homosexuality during his playing career, as were members of management. And many of those teammates believe that his sexuality " and the reaction it provoked " led to the premature derailment of his baseball career. Out. The Glenn Burke Story tells the tumultuous story of the wedge that was driven between Burke and the Los Angeles management, the ensuing similar situation in Oakland that led to Burke's abrupt retirement, and the hero's welcome that Burke received in San Francisco's Castro District after he left professional baseball. Comcast SportsNet's narrative follows Burke through his public announcement of his homosexuality in a 1982 Inside Sports magazine article ("The Double Life of a Gay Dodger") and on The Today Show with Bryant Gumbel, to his subsequent downward spiral to drugs, prison, and eventually living on the same San Francisco streets where he was once hailed as an icon. Burke's story took on another level of tragedy when he was diagnosed with AIDS in 1994. Yet at the end of his life, the game that he claimed abandoned him so many years before reached out to one of its own. The A's found Burke and provided him with constant support in his final months, as did some of his former teammates. Glenn Burke passed away on May 30, 1995 at the age of 42 of AIDS-related complications. Out. The Glenn Burke Story documents the extent of Burke's courage, strife and friendship throughout his life, and the compassion and callousness of the sport of baseball. The program weaves together insights from Burke's teammates and friends, including Dusty Baker, Davey Lopes, Reggie Smith, Rick Monday, Manny Mota, Rickey Henderson, Claudell Washington, Mike Norris, Shooty Babitt, Tito Fuentes, sports agent Abdul-Jalil and former Major Leaguer and gay rights activist Billy Bean. Out. The Glenn Burke Story, a one-hour documentary, premieres on Wednesday, November 10 at 8:00 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and will air commercial-free. Out. The Glenn Burke Story online press kit and video excerpts from the documentary are available at CSNBayArea.com/pages/out.
