My special guests today are Eddie Paul and Chris "Freight Train" Floyd, bandmates from The Mighty Train Wrecks! Nashville's own, The Mighty Train Wrecks, was built around the original songwriting and vocal harmony blend of Eddie Paul and Chris "Freight Train" Floyd. A formative four-year residency at the iconic Bobby's Idle Hour on Music Row cemented their reputation as a band worth seeing. Since 2014 they have delivered original, high-octane, and soulful Americana music to appreciative audiences. Along the way, they have garnered successes like being featured in an interview on the renowned WSM AM 650 radio show with Devon O'Day, WDVX's Blue Plate Special, and three times on Channel 4, WSMV's Today In Nashville Show. The Wreck's musical ethos is a mix of Jimmy Rodgers, Merle Haggard, Grateful Dead, and The Band, leavened by a sprinkling of Little Feat and Muddy Waters. Freight Train and Eddie look forward to entertaining your audience as a duo, trio, or fiery five-piece! Stay tuned, as a sophomore CD project, with all new songs, will be available soon! 114. In this episode we are talking to the amazing Bobby Green from the 1933 Group. Bobby is one of the most innovative restaurant and bar entrepreneurs in Los Angeles, if not the whole country, and he and his partners own and operate about a dozen local establishments including the historic Formosa Cafe, Highland Park Bowl and Idle Hour. Over the last 20 years they have not only fully embraced next level aesthetics to create transformative experiences with their establishments but at the same time have restored many iconic locations important to the history of our city. In this interview Bobby tells us the story of how he went from one humble coffee shop to the current impressive portfolio that includes some of LAs most beloved places. He also shares how his teams early embrace of set design, detail, quality and transformative experiences has helped set the stage for the high quality restaurant environment that is common in the city today. He also talks about his love for Los Angeles, his other hobbies and how he would choose to spend his perfect day in LA. You got that one hot rod buddy who’s done all the cool stuff and gone all the great places and uncovers all the goodies all the time and has the greatest job ever? If you’re lucky, you know exactly what we’re talking about and life is so much more interesting because of that one friend. In our world, that one guy is our Man About Town, Bobby Green of Old Crow Speed Shop! While it’s true that Bobby has built some of our favorite period-correct hot rods out of Old Crow (and got the one and only Chris “Coop” Cooper to do the Old Crow Speed Shop logo), he’s also a partner in 1933 Group – the crew that brought Los Angeles the return of the historic Idle Hour and bars like Oldfield’s (as in Barney Oldfield), as well as the restoration of the Formosa Café and the Tail ‘O The Pup. He’s got a Japanese apparel brand, a few hot rods in a Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign, and a tamale restaurant that looks like a giant pipe-smoking dog from the Petersen Museum. If it’s vintage hot rod-inspired and it’s cool, Bobby either owns it, found it, or knows about it. So, roll up your pant legs and set up camp on the edge of the pool, over there: we’ll bring the drinks over and wait for Bobby to get here – you’ll wanna hear this!

Maryann Almes, president of the Oakdale Historical Society, joins us to discuss the organization's role in preserving and celebrating the history of Oakdale. Located in Islip on the south shore of Long Island, Oakdale has a storied past as a gem of the Gilded Age. For decades in the late 19th century, a string of mansions, most prominently William K. Vanderbilt's Idle Hour, lined the Great South Bay and attracted national attention. The Society received Preservation Long Island's award for Organizational Excellence, and Maryann details for us just how much work and effort goes into achieving that excellence. The to-do list includes constant advocacy, innovative public events, and a community committed to the place where they live. Today's episode marks the end of our week-long celebration of the 2020 Preservation Long Island Preservation Awards. We have visited the shores of Sag Harbor and the headwaters of the Speonk River. We have seen inside sawmills and firehouses and traced the mysteries of local preservation laws. I want to thank all the award winners for their time and interviews. I especially want to thank Sarah Kautz and Preservation Long Island for letting us help host this week of celebrations. We hope you've enjoyed listening and that you are inspired to take a look around your own corner of Long Island and get involved in determining what history gets saved and what gets remembered. This week's episode of The String (#63) is about a sense of place and how we stand up for the places we cherish. Nashville has thrived as the epicenter of country music songwriting in part because of its own strong sense of place. It was a mid South crossroads city that welcomed art and music from the 19th century on. It became a pioneer in radio in the 20s and 30s by reflecting and broadcasting local values and sounds. Then in the mid 1950s, music business innovators and instigators began to cluster together on the parallel streets of 16th and 17th avenues, transforming a residential neighborhood into Music Row. Compact and convivial, Music Row was like a village, where music makers and business people worked and mingled and loitered with intent. A culture evolved over the decades that still hangs on today. And yet, people are concerned. A city that used to change slowly is transforming and growing, too fast for many. Commercial interests and cultural passions are clashing. And at the vortex of that conflict is Music Row. We're spending this hour of radio on Music Row, 1028 16th Ave. to be precise, a little bar called Bobby's Idle Hour. And our featured guest is a wonderful veteran songwriter who hangs out here, named John Scott Sherrill.
