A new survey of 2-thousand adults finds that 63% prefer to lick theirs, while 39% bite their scoops. But what does that reveal about them? People who go at it with their teeth and bite their ice cream are more “fearless,” “confident” and “impulsive.” She explains, “Biters are very in-the-moment, they are probably extroverts and like instant gratification.”Those who lick their ice cream tend to be “methodical” and “relaxed,” as they patiently enjoy their scoop. “Lickers prefer delayed gratification,” Hemmings says. “They crave the dopamine hit, the brain's reward, that they get from extending the eating process.”As for those who nibble, they're more likely to be “cautious,” “gentle” and “thoughtful,” but possibly a little controlling at times. “Nibblers are good emotional self-regulators, though they may be prone to anxiety because of their enthusiasm for attention to detail,” the ice cream analyst explains.Second Date Update: Mandy met Steve on Hinge. A silver Chevy Equinox EV glides silently through city streets—presenting a study in contrasts to the raw power of NASCAR's most intimidating drivers featured in today's jam-packed automotive roundup.Ford's quality control takes center stage as we dissect an alarming series of recalls affecting models across their lineup. From steering column shifters that may detach to unexpected vehicle movements and rearview cameras displaying incorrectly, these aren't just assembly issues—they're fundamental product design problems requiring immediate attention. The frequency and severity of these recalls raise serious questions about reliability and safety that potential Ford buyers should consider.Transitioning to market values, our Heming's Sold Car Roundup reveals fascinating insights into what collectors are willing to pay for automotive history. A 1963 Corvette Restomod commands a jaw-dropping $142,590 while a beautifully preserved 1978 Toyota FJ40 fetches $47,250. Meanwhile, a 2006 Maserati Quattroporte—once the pinnacle of Italian luxury—sells for a mere $21,000, proving that prestige doesn't always translate to lasting value. These auction results offer a window into the complex psychology of automotive investments, where sentiment often outweighs practicality. The highlight of our show arrives with Jeff's "Gangsters of NASCAR" feature, chronicling the sport's most fearsome competitors. From Dale Earnhardt's intimidating presence to Cale Yarborough's willingness to throw hands with the Allison brothers, these drivers didn't just compete—they dominated through force of will and fearless determination. As modern NASCAR evolves toward a more sanitized experience, these legends remind us of racing's raw, combative roots. We wrap with an extensive review of the 2025 Chevy Equinox EV, exploring its 319-mile range, one-pedal driving capability, and surprising interior spaciousness. Send us a textJoan DeLeon's path to becoming one of trail running's most exciting talents defies conventional narratives. From the concrete streets of Waco, Texas, to stunning the mountain running world by beating Joe Gray at A-Basin, his journey combines raw talent with refreshing authenticity.Growing up without mountains or trails, DeLeon's running foundation came through summer track programs where Baylor University athletes served as mentors. This early exposure to quality coaching propelled him to collegiate success, but his introduction to mountain running came almost by accident when college teammate Cade Michael convinced him to visit Colorado's Gunnison Valley after graduation. What began as a temporary stay evolved into five transformative years in one of America's mountain running epicenters. DeLeon speaks candidly about discovering a completely different relationship with running in the mountains – one characterized by freedom and exploration rather than oval tracks. This new environment rekindled his love for the sport after collegiate burnout. The trail running community embraced DeLeon after his breakthrough performance at Cirque Series A-Basin, rallying through a GoFundMe to send him to Golden Trail Series races. This experience opened his eyes to the global mountain running scene, inspiring a more structured approach to training under the guidance of the Hemmings coaching team and leading to his new partnership with Satisfy Running.Looking toward 2025, DeLeon balances ambitious competitive goals—including the US Mountain Running Championships at Sunapee—with genuine appreciation for the journey. His competitive philosophy combines fierce determination with perspective: "We're all friends, but when we step on the line, my job is to destroy you."Ready to witness the next chapter in this remarkable story? Peering behind the curtain of modern automotive manufacturing reveals a complex web of global dependencies that few consumers ever consider. Our deep dive into recent recalls uncovers how Tesla's futuristic Cybertruck faces very traditional manufacturing challenges, with nearly all 46,096 produced in the first 15 months being recalled for detaching exterior panels. This highlights the industry's increasing reliance on adhesives rather than mechanical fastening—a practice that proves problematic when vehicles bake in scorching parking lots. The revelation that Ford produces hundreds of thousands of F-Series Super Duty pickups on American soil while sourcing every single engine from Canada or Mexico exposes the vulnerability of cross-border manufacturing arrangements. With potential tariffs looming, Ford faces a potential crisis costing up to $75,000 in duties per truckload of engines. This situation illustrates how interconnected North American manufacturing has become and the cascading effects that policy changes could trigger. Our weekly Hemmings used car auction segment reveals fascinating insights into the collector market. A 1967 Ford Mustang restomod selling for $18,900 might seem reasonable, but the $38,325 commanded by a stock 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air demonstrates the enduring appeal of untouched American classics. Meanwhile, the presidential limousine known as "The Beast" is getting an upgrade, with the Secret Service conferring with GM on the next generation of this rolling fortress. From industry partnerships between unlikely allies like Hyundai and General Motors to the struggles of Stellantis offering buyouts worth up to $72,000 to hourly workers, we track the evolving landscape of automotive manufacturing.

In this episode of In the Course of Human Events, historians from Monticello's Getting Word African American Oral History Project share the recent rediscovery of Robert Hemmings's signature, a revelation confirming the literacy and the agency of the man that Thomas Jefferson enslaved as his valet. As a teenage boy, Hemmings was at Jefferson's side in Philadelphia when he wrote the Declaration of Independence, and later gained his own freedom, becoming the first of very few to be freed by Jefferson. Listen as Andrew Davenport, Auriana Woods, and Bernatiae Reed discuss this discovery and describe the life of Robert Hemmings whose story inspired “Descendants of Monticello,” a new exhibition that recently opened at Independence National Historical Park's Declaration House in Philadelphia, PA. By moving Hemmings to the center of this moment in history, this project explores the entangled legacies of freedom and enslavement at the core of our nation's founding. Since 1993, the Getting Word African American Oral History Project has collected and preserved the oral histories of Monticello's enslaved community and their descendants, creating an archive of freedom and a fuller story of Monticello and the United States. Getting Word and other staff from the Thomas Jefferson Foundation worked with Monument Lab, the National Park Service, and other organizations to present “Descendants of Monticello,” which was conceived and developed by artist Sonya Clark.

Intro music from:Arthemis - Survivor (Destiny's Child Cover)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjYCOtYjCY4The Survivor is a 1981 supernatural horror Australian-British co-production directed by David Hemmings and starring Robert Powell, Jenny Agutter, and Joseph Cotten. In Adelaide, Australia (not Eton in the UK as in the original novel written by James Herbert), airline pilot David Keller (played by Powell) survives the crash of his Boeing 747-200, unhurt despite all 300 passengers dying in the accident. With no memories of the accident, he starts to suffer strange supernatural visions.Director David Hemmings is most famous for his acting roles, including Dildano in Barbarella, Marcus Daly in Dario Argento's Deep Red, and Thomas, the fashion photographer in the hugely successful avant-garde mystery film Blowup – a role turned down by Sean Connery because director Michelangelo Antonioni would not show him the full script but only a seven-page treatment stored in a cigarette packet. Hemmings would later feature in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Connery 37 years later.Robert Powell, best known for his portrayal of a charismatic cult leader/son of a carpenter in the 1977 epic television drama series Jesus of Nazareth, also played secret agent Richard Hannay in The Thirty-Nine Steps, appeared in Ken Russell's Tommy as Captain Walker and, at the request of his friend and golf partner, comedian Jasper Carrott, co-starred in the BBC sitcom The Detectives (which ran for five series!). He also lent his voice to the 2002 rock opera The Hound of the Baskervilles by Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman, playing John Watson. Powell was considered for several roles in Lifeforce (featured in episode 39 of this podcast). A founder member of the Social Democratic Party in 1981, he campaigned alongside Barry Norman on behalf of the party's first leader, Roy Jenkins.Jenny Agutter (OBE), who plays the role of Hobbs the clairvoyant (a male character in the novel), is best known for her ongoing role in the inexplicably popular Call the Midwife. She also starred in two adaptations of The Railway Children, the critically acclaimed film Walkabout, and, relevant to this podcast, An American Werewolf in London (listen to episode 26 for more info). The film also features Joseph Cotten, (best man at Orson Welles's wedding to Rita Hayworth) appeared in five films selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. In addition to these classics, he appeared in many films and TV programs, including, pertinent to this podcast, one episode of Tales of the Unexpected. He later admitted, "I was in a lot of junk. I get nervous when I don't work." This was his final motion picture, suffering a stroke shortly after working on it.James Herbert, author of the source novel, sent a note to David Hemmings offering his assistance. He never received a reply, and in 1988 dismissed this film and the later Deadly Eyes (the film adaptation of The Rats) as "They're terrible...absolute rubbish. I can only say - don't blame me." The Survivor was Herbert's third novel, published in 1976, coming after The Rats and The Fog.The music for this film is by Brian May! …but not the one you're thinking of... This is the Australian Brian May, who has an impressive musical CV, including: The Blue Lagoon, Gallipoli, Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Missing in Action 2 and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. This was the first Australian movie to cost more than $1 million (Australian) to make. The location was shifted to OZ as a complex tax dodge, allowing English investors to completely write-off on the whole film. Dan Stoner, Hemmings Creative Director, is no stranger to project cars. From his Stoner-T with its blown HEMI, to a killer little T-bucket, a flat bottom drag boat, and of all things, an Edsel, some would say that Mr. Stoner is indeed, and automotive masochist. Case in point, a 1952 Henry J that once belonged to his dad, and that Dan has now taken under his wing for a restoration and rebirth if you will - but here's the thing, the car hasn't been on the road since 1967. Originally purchased by his father back in the late 1950s, it was used as a daily driver for some time. It then went to a family member, until after years of use the little Henry J was put out to pasture in the family barn until Dan rescued it and shipped it to California. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ, Dan Stoner sits down with host Mike Musto to tell us what's in store for the Henry J that's been in his family for almost 70 years.

This week I spoke to Jono Shaw, President of Hemmings Motor News, to find out more about the new buying service called the "Frictionless Marketplace." For anyone who has bought a car online sight unseen it can be a little unnerving when you "win" the auction and are then left to figure out how to get the car legally, safely, and paid for without the fear of getting completely ripped off. To put it bluntly, this service is meant to put some teeth to the "wild-west" that has become common in buying a car line and put Hemmings into the mix to prevent the possibility of fraud. Last week Dodge took the wraps off the brand new and beautifully designed 2024 Dodge Charger and to say the automotive populous went nuts would be an understatement. First, there's a lot to digest here as the new Charger will be offered in both two and four door variants and with a choice of either EV or ICE powerplants (ICE comes in 2025). But more so, the enthusiast crowd seems to be torn for one simple fact – it doesn't come with a HEMI. Now if you've been following automotive news, you'll know that the HEMI v8 is at the end of its lifecycle and can no longer be produced, thus the inclusion of the new twin-turbo Hurricane inline-6. However, even though Dodge is giving us both an EV and ICE version, AND the choice of both two and four doors, people still seem tweaked. That's why on this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ podcast we've brought in Hemmings own Evan Perkins and Bryan McTaggart (both diehard muscle car guys) to give their take on the new 2024 Dodge Charger.
