This is the case of JB meeting JB!While our paths have occasionally crossed, mainly at social events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed or back in the day at the bar at the BRDC dinner and dance, I have always thought Jenson Button and I would be great friends. He just never knew it!Anyway, now we both live in Los Angeles I have hoped for a while that we could sit down for Life with Legends. The trouble is that Jenson is busier now than ever, so last week, before the madness of racing seasons kick off, we met at the Petersen Museum and guess what; we were like old friends! When you are an active racing driver working your way through your career you tend to not to get that involved or aware of other peoples racing backgrounds. For me that was the case with Jenson, but once I read up on his early days in karting and how successful he was, it all dropped into place on why and how he set himself up for such an amazing F1 career! He literally won nearly everything possible in Karting against some of the other (now) biggest names in racing; 3 x British Open Kart Champion, Winner of the European Super A Championship and many, many more. His incredibly smooth and precise driving style led to a long stint in Formula One winning 15 races and the Drivers Championship in 2009, and was definitely a fan favorite known for his easy going nature and relatability. While his post-Formula One career is pretty far reaching, but his appetite to still race is huge, and so some very exciting news ahead for him - stay tuned! Thanks to everyone at the Petersen for giving us space to record this episode and a highlight for sure was seeing a couple of his old F1 cars in the vault! Very cool!Anyway, we had a great time and covered a lot of ground in two hours and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did having it.JB

We've talked a lot about electrification and sustainable energy and transformational technologies shaping the ways we move through the world on Before IT Happened. In this episode, award-winning industrial designer and co-founder of Untitled Motorcycles Hugo Eccles joins the show to talk about his creative process driven by a passion for both riding and design, talking about his family's deep connection with automobiles all the way to his current challenges designing e-bikes and trying to attract new groups of riders through innovation and conscious development. Before any world-changing innovation, there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life.  JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (02:11) - Hugo's family legacy with mechanics - “My great-grandfather was one of the founders of the Royal Automobile Club and played a big part in electrifying Britain. In fact, there's a story that he got punched by Queen Victoria. He got into a disagreement with the queen when he was installing electric lighting in Buckingham Palace.” (05:11) - Working with the design firm IDEO in the 90s - “I worked on everything from office furniture systems to mobile phones to children's toys, car interiors, medical products, you name it.” (09:57) - Establishing a booming design career - “We're not engineers. We're very ignorant about things, which I think is good in a way. We're really well-positioned to be the kind of advocate for the consumer—for the user—because they're not engineers either.” (13:17) - Hugo's decision to focus on motorcycle design - “It just started with a really innocent question. My wife asked me ‘This might be a stupid question, but you love design and you love motorcycles. Have you ever thought about designing motorcycles?' It was interesting. I think I was waiting for permission to do it.” (20:56) - Designing on trend - “I think the trouble with style is it's generally attached to fashion, and fashion is very temporary. If I had to choose function or style, I'd choose function because function never goes out of style.” (27:49) - Hugo's on the future of e-mobility (and how to attract new non-male riders) - “ I really think comparing a gas bike to an electric bike's a bit like comparing a landline to an iPhone. They both make phone calls, but the implications of the two things are so very different.” EPISODE RESOURCES: Connect with Hugo on https://www.instagram.com/hugoeccles/ (Instagram) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/hugo-eccles-92855b8b/ (Linkedin) Learn more about https://www.untitledmotorcycles.com/ (Untitled Motorcycles) Learn more about the https://www.petersen.org/ (Petersen Museum in Los Angeles) Listen to Before IT Happened's:https://www.beforeithappened.com/podcast-episodes/tapping-into-startup-culture-and-betting-on-the-future-of-mobility-with-vitaly-golomb-episode-19 ( )https://www.beforeithappened.com/podcast-episodes/smart-electric-motorcycles-and-achieving-zero-fatalities-before-2030-with-damon-founder-jay-giraud (Smart, Electric Motorcycles and Achieving Zero Fatalities Before 2030) Listen to Before IT Happened's:https://www.beforeithappened.com/podcast-episodes/tapping-into-startup-culture-and-betting-on-the-future-of-mobility-with-vitaly-golomb-episode-19 ( )https://www.beforeithappened.com/podcast-episodes/driving-the-nostalgia-of-motorcycles-into-the-ev-era-with-paul-dorleans-episode-40 (Driving the Nostalgia of Motorcycles into the EV Era with Paul d'Orleans) Thank you for listening! Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life.  JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (01:52) - Paul D'Orleans on his first motorbike and growing up in Stockton, California - “I cultivated a kind of street smarts or at least street awareness from an early age, but, you know, I was kid, so I mostly I had fun.” (06:21) - Paul's first business as a freelance painter in San Francisco and the vintage motorcycle scene in the 80s - “This was no ordinary unemployed hooligan club. These were people who all had college educations that loved carrying around on old British motorcycles.” (12:25) All the way to the Soviet border: Paul's motorcycle road trip to Europe in 1988 - “I was encouraged to take a trip in 1987 out to the Eastern Bloc to buy old motorcycles because there were quite a few ex-military and other machines and they were dirt cheap.” (15:33) - The growing momentum for motorcycles in pop culture and the creation of The Vintagent - “I just started posting photos with one or two sentences at first. And then as I learned how to play that instrument, it became much more elaborate.” (23:02) - Why it's important to understand the history of electric vehicles and the present transitional phase - “In early January 2009, I was able to be the first press anywhere to break the story of the world's first electric superbike. Who knew that 10 years later, I would have that bike in one of my Peterson exhibits.” (29:08) - What will really push the EV revolution forward - “If you want mass adoption, you need legislation. That's what happened in China. They banned small internal combustion motors from the center of their big cities. Boom! They got 4 million EVs on the road.” EPISODE RESOURCES:  Follow Paul on https://www.instagram.com/pauldorleans/?hl=en (Instagram), https://www.facebook.com/thevintagent/ (Facebook) Read https://thevintagent.com/ (The Vintagent) Read Paul's book https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/3899559568/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i5 (The Current)  Learn more about the https://www.petersen.org/ (Petersen Museum in Los Angeles) See the latest street fashions on https://www.thesartorialist.com/ (The Sartorialist ) Thank you for listening! No need, as Plaid is just so good. "Previously, Tesla and Musk promised fans the tri-motor, Plaid Plus version of their new Model S would give drivers 1,100 horsepower, 520 miles of range on a fully charged battery, and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds." says CNBC: "In March, Tesla raised the price of the Model S Plaid Plus by $10,000 bringing it to about $150,000. The option to order the Model S Plaid Plus variant was removed from Tesla's website around the last week of May, according to a CNET report. The remaining high-end version of the Model S Plaid will cost around $119,900 and feature a 390-mile range battery, with 1,020 horsepower and acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in two seconds, among other features." The unveiling is 10th June. Will there be a surprise? Some people speculate because the Roadster 2 has been extended to 11th June at the Petersen Museum, that's the surprise.  "It's available to order in the UK now for £110,980, but while Musk has reiterated that first deliveries will take place later this month, British buyers will have to wait until the end of 2022 for their cars according to Tesla's UK configurator." said Autoexpress: "The Plaid+ variant would have lined up as a long-range version of the car, with the same performance specs, but with up to 520 miles of running on a full battery. It was priced at £139,980. Like most car manufacturers, Tesla is being affected by the global semiconductor shortage. In an earnings call on 26 April, Musk called the shortage “a huge problem.” " Do we need Plaid+? Plaid will make the most of V3 Superchargers at 250kW. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/07/elon-musk-says-tesla-officially-canceled-the-model-s-plaid-plus.html https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/tesla/model-s/354163/new-520-mile-tesla-model-s-plaid-cancelled-elon-musk TESLA MODEL 3 BECOMES MOST POPULAR BATTERY ELECTRIC CAR ON UK ROADS"The Tesla Model 3 has become the most popular battery electric car on British roads after a surge in sales, as the race to dominate the car industry's new era heats up." according to The Guardian: "The number of Model 3s on British roads overtook Nissan's Leaf models during the first four months of 2021, according to calculations by Matthias Schmidt, an independent electric car analyst. There are now 39,900 Model 3s in the UK, compared with 38,900 Leafs, many of which are built at Nissan's factory in Sunderland." https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jun/06/tesla-model-3-becomes-most-popular-battery-electric-car-on-uk-roads ŠKODA ENYAQ SPORTLINE IVŠKODA's athletic trim variant is now also available for the brand's new, all-electric SUVSporty look with a wealth of black design features and lowered sports chassisThree power variants and rear- or all-wheel drive The most powerful variant is the ENYAQ SPORTLINE iV 80x. Thanks to a second electric motor on the front axle, it transmits power to the road via all-wheel drive. The two motors have a combined output of 195 kW.  The 80x is mainly driven by a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PSM) on the rear axle, which delivers an output of 150 kW.  An asynchronous motor, designed with a pulse inverter and a single-speed gearbox in a coaxial arrangement, is used at the front. This has an output of 80 kW.  Asynchronous motors are characterised by a short-term overload capability and low drag losses. They are thus perfect for short-term boosts. The ENYAQ SPORTLINE iV 80x is powered by a 82 kWh battery and can cover more than 500 km*** in the WLTP cycle. Its top speed is 160 km/h. https://www.skoda-storyboard.com/en/press-releases/skoda-enyaq-sportline-iv-electric-emotive-and-dynamic/ NIO REVEALS 'GEMINI' AS CODE NAME FOR NEW LUXURY EV LINE" Get Report revealed that "Gemini" is the code name for a new high-end electric vehicle lineup to be launched next year, burying speculation that the China-based EV maker was looking to release a less-expensive mass-entry-level electric car." says The Street: "NIO supplier JAC Group last month invited bids for construction of a NIO production line codenamed “Gemini” that would produce 60,000 units a year, sparking speculation that it would be a new entry-level NIO model. Now being called Landjet by company officials, this new model aims to outdo Tesla in every way imaginable, from battery tech and range to autonomous driving capabilities. In short, Audi wants to create the new gold standard of all-electric and self-driving vehicles." says CarBuzz: "The German automaker has just announced the project has now entered a new phase. Development of the new high-tech flagship has been moved entirely in-house instead of operating as sort of a standalone division. Project Artemis, or Learjet, is widely expected to morph into the Audi A9 e-tron once it goes on sale. If you’re lucky, you know exactly what we’re talking about and life is so much more interesting because of that one friend. In our world, that one guy is our Man About Town, Bobby Green of Old Crow Speed Shop! While it’s true that Bobby has built some of our favorite period-correct hot rods out of Old Crow (and got the one and only Chris “Coop” Cooper to do the Old Crow Speed Shop logo), he’s also a partner in 1933 Group – the crew that brought Los Angeles the return of the historic Idle Hour and bars like Oldfield’s (as in Barney Oldfield), as well as the restoration of the Formosa Café and the Tail ‘O The Pup. He’s got a Japanese apparel brand, a few hot rods in a Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign, and a tamale restaurant that looks like a giant pipe-smoking dog from the Petersen Museum. If it’s vintage hot rod-inspired and it’s cool, Bobby either owns it, found it, or knows about it. So, roll up your pant legs and set up camp on the edge of the pool, over there: we’ll bring the drinks over and wait for Bobby to get here – you’ll wanna hear this!
