Ryan Vander Sanden — General Manager and Entertainment Director at EPIC Event Center in Green Bay — joins Fox Cities Core on WCZR Code Zero Radio for a wide-open conversation about the business of live music, the stories behind the shows, and why Northeast Wisconsin's concert scene is better than ever.Ryan pulls back the curtain on everything from his first (hilariously disastrous) national booking — an LA Guns show where he bought every item on the rider, including the band's socks — to landing Megadeth and Obituary for the only two Wisconsin dates on their farewell tour. If you've ever wondered why your favorite band skipped Green Bay, why ticket prices are what they are, or what really happens backstage after the show, this episode is for you.HIGHLIGHTS:- How Ryan got his start in the music business — with zero experience and even less idea what "backline" meant- The behind-the-scenes reality of booking national acts: routing, rider riders, production costs, and why not every band can play every market- Landing Megadeth + Obituary for two exclusive Wisconsin stadium shows (August 1)- The story behind the Marilyn Manson show — protesters in the parking lot, a smoke machine that tripped the fire alarm, and fans who didn't flinch- GWAR on Easter. Marilyn Manson on Mother's Day. The cleanup crew. The Faygo. All of it.- EPIC's Friends of Epic Display — how stage-worn memorabilia from Jesse Dupree (Jackyl) to Corey Taylor ends up in the venue (and why it stays there)- Sleep Token as an opening act, and other "lightning in a bottle" moments before a band blows up- The origins of Behind the Curtain, EPIC's podcast with co-host Don Jamieson (That Metal Show), featuring guests like Wolfgang Van Halen, Chad Gray, Edwin McCain, and Ricky Rachman- Why Buddy Guy (October 9) might be your last chance to see a living blues legend — and why you shouldn't sit this one out- Lynyrd Skynyrd with Mark Farner and The Beach Boys — September 3, fully seated outdoor show- Napoleon Dynamite interactive screening — what to expect from the cast Q&A- Why EPIC has free parking, some of the lowest ticket fees in the region, and a liquor selection that rivals venues twice its size- Gene Simmons. Ozzy Osbourne. Wayne Newton's guitar inscription. The Avatar singer who wiped out mid-show. Rock and roll is still very much alive.Fox Cities Core is a live interview program on WCZR Code Zero Radio, an independent streaming rock station based in Appleton, Wisconsin. She began her ambitious solo career as a singer/songwriter in 2000 after she graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Broadcasting and Music Composition from Arizona State University. Laura composed the original score for the gay friendly independent film, An Intimate Friendship, by Filling The Gap Productions. The film was acclaimed by audiences globally after headlining both national and international film festivals.  Laura is no stranger to the film industry.  You may have seen Laura on NBC's #1 rated show, Fear Factor. In a brave effort to win the grand prize to assist in her music career, she had the unique opportunity of riding a bull in Season 2.  A few years later, she submitted a video that was a winner on ABC's America's Funniest Home Videos.  As a member of Chicks With Picks during her time in Arizona, she had the opportunity to open for Country artist Sarah Buxton and Michelle Branch. She later had the privilege of opening for another one of her mentors, Edwin McCain, on the Cayamo music cruise.  Laura moved to Nashville in 2010 to pursue her songwriting career. She quickly became affiliated with NSAI and ASCAP.  She has performed at the famous Bluebird Cafe, The Listening Room, The Local, Douglas Corner, Bobby's Idle Hour and numerous other renowned local venues.  Publishers and mentors have recognized Laura for her descriptive storytelling with a poetic undertone.  She recorded her album The Songwriters in Nashville with Producer Vaughn Lofstead.   The album consists of 14 songs and her title track, The Songwriters, was chosen by Publisher Woody Bomar to open his reknowed songwriting seminars in Nashville.Laura is a true artist and storyteller.  She is passionate about her craft and expresses that unwavering dedication in her song The Songwriters when she writes “not all of us will be heard, but there's nothing we'd rather be.  We are the Songwriters of Nashville Tennessee”.  *****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Welcome to another edition of The Way Out Podcast! I'm your host, Charlie, and in this rendition of The Way Out, we have something truly special lined up for you. You might know Edwin McCain as the voice behind timeless hits like 'I'll Be' and 'I Could Not Ask for More,' but beyond the music, he's got a deeply personal story that embodies recovery, resilience, and transformation.  For those of you who've been listening to The Way Out from the start, you'll recognize this as the original format of the show, where I would deliver the introduction to the interview that followed. We're going old school on this one with Edwin because once our chat got started, there was no stopping for nothin. In this conversation, Edwin opens up about his journey to and through Recovery to this point—the highs, the struggles, and the lessons that have shaped him not just as an artist, but as a human being. His insights into addiction, healing, and finding purpose beyond fame are powerful and deeply relatable. All of this he takes into his new album, Lucky for which he embarks on Tour to support starting in our back yard in Minneapolis tomorrow, Cinco De Mayo of all days. Perhaps the most profound and resonant piece of spiritual and Recovery wisdom to come from our recovery rap session is that Nothing is the hardest thing to do on our path to and through Recovery. Boredom and idle time was untenable and it felt impossible not to react to most everything.Paradoxically, when I'm spiritually centered, Nothing is too hard in Recovery or life. So whether you're doing something or nothing as you listen, I am certain you'll enjoy kicking it old school with Edwin and I waxing poetic on all things Recovery so Listen Up.  TakeawaysRecovery is a personal journey that requires understandingone's triggers. The loss of an addict can lead to others finding their pathto sobriety.Mindfulness can help individuals separate their thoughtsfrom their actions.Harm reduction strategies can be effective for someindividuals in recovery.Community support is crucial in the recovery process.Every recovery journey is unique and requires tailoredapproaches.Understanding brain chemistry can aid in addressingaddiction.Families must also engage in the recovery process to breakthe cycle. Dale  Earnhardt Jr. welcomes Top-40 music artist and longtime NASCAR fan Edwin McCain to the Download to chat about his journey from a humble, local music scene to writing one of the most memorable songs in history. Edwin also shares how Dale Jr.'s 2001 July Daytona win had a profound impact on his life.  After being born in Greenville, South Carolina, Edwin was put up for adoption but admits he has never sought out much information about his biological mother. Dale and Edwin relate on the experience of asking parents hard questions at the end of their lives to get the real picture of their upbringing. Edwin explains he began playing music at an early age after struggling in school due to dyslexia. He and Dale chat about the music they enjoyed growing up and what musicians were a major influence on Edwin, and led him to pick up a guitar.Edwin gives listeners an idea of what the music scene was like in the mid-90s, when he, Dave Matthews and Hootie and the Blowfish were finding their way to major record label contracts. Edwin admits that his signing was largely thanks to the kindness of Hootie, who asked Atlantic Records to give him a shot. After an underperforming debut, in part due to Edwin's disconnection from the project, Edwin saved his career with the smash hit “I'll Be,” which remains one of the greatest love songs ever written. Edwin talks candidly about developing an addiction problem and his journey to rehab. Hear the behind-the-scenes story of a hit songwriter's biggest cut... and biggest bruise! Phillip Lammonds is a songwriter and instrumentalist from the musically rich mountains of North Carolina. He was a founder of The Blue Dogs, a critically acclaimed bluegrass and rock inspired jam band. He then started his family in Pawley's Island, South Carolina while working as a fishing guide, a falconer, and the owner of a real estate company. All the while, he wrote songs and traveled to Nashville to pitch them. After fifteen years, fifty or so trips to Nashville, and cuts on major artists—Hootie and the Blowfish, Josh Turner, Craig Morgan—Phillip moved to music city to pursue songwriting full time. He stepped onto the scene with a publishing deal from Curb Entertainment and a back catalog nearly five hundred songs strong. Phillip's songs have been recorded by artists like Lee Brice, Jerrod Niemann, Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton, Edwin McCain, Craig Morgan, Kellie Pickler, Mo Pitney, and Dylan Scott. Today, he shares the inside story of one of his biggest cuts… and biggest bruises!
