Send us a textLimahl stops by the show to discuss his latest release, how taking a chance with Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran helped his band get a record deal, coming out to his Mum, and so much more. *******“The original ‘70s track has been a favorite on my 'Evening' playlist for a long time,” says UK music topliner LIMAHL about his reimagining of the classic folk/rock hit “A Horse With No Name” that is released via Christopher Music on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. “The idea to reimagine it was always ticking away in the back of my mind.”The song was first released in 1971 in the UK (1972 in the US). The original was composed and performed by folk rock trio America and topped Billboard's Hot 100 and Easy Listening charts (it reached #3 on the UK Singles chart and was certified gold in 1972). Adapting the ‘70s musical aesthetics and injecting a bit of ‘90s electronica, Limahl's updated version of the song carries a bit of a retro-futuristic quality that feels equally at home in 2025. “The ‘90s have been enjoying a revival which prompted me to experiment with the drums/rhythms from that decade,” he explains. “Then the jerky, ‘Jupiter 8' analogue synthesizer/sequencer was added with a filtering envelope, and it became an important personality in the track.” He also toyed with the iconic non-lexical “la la” vocal and updated it, incorporating it further into the song. Absent on the ‘70s original but included in this rendition is the ‘la la' motif in the intro, the key-change on the last verse, and in the final chorus, the ‘la la's' crisscrossing the main lyric with the melody. Saying that, almost as an afterthought, a guitar from standout musician Steve Cooper was added, and it became the "icing on the cake.”The resulting track transforms the classic folk track with a mesmerizing and hypnotic synth-dominated swirl, making the song pop and click in ways that would have been unimaginable in the 1970s. The equally mesmerizing accompanying video bursts with surreal and psychedelic imagery, reflecting the song's hallucinatory spirit. Winning the hearts of millions of fans in the ‘80s as the lead singer of British band Kajagoogoo, Limahl enjoyed the instant celebrity of hitting the top of the charts with their debut single "Too Shy" (75million+ streams to date) which was followed by two more Top 20 hits "Ooh To Be Ah" and "Hang On Now" (all of which he co-wrote). Limahl struck out on his own and soon re-emerged in the charts again with his first solo single "Only For Love," That was quickly followed with the Giorgio Moroder–produced worldwide smash "Neverending Story" (151million+ streams to date)," the theme song from the hit film of the same name.Website: http://www.limahl.com/*****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. I don't like to label myself and wasn't someone who thought much about my sexual orientation– throughout my life, I have just loved who I loved. But when I fell in love with a woman, and it was clear that she was my life partner– I, like all gay people, was faced with the challenge of coming out and sharing that news with my family. To set the stage, it was 1996 in the Midwest, and if you've listened to previous episodes, you know that my mom was a former nun. Gay marriage wasn't legal yet, and to put things into perspective, Ellen hadn't even come out publicly yet! Today I sit down with my mom, Barbara (again! Welcome back, Mom!), and we talk about how she felt when I came out. The way she responded and treated me and my wife was beyond any response I could have imagined. Today we discuss how to embrace and support your loved ones, even if they make different choices than you would. Coming out looks different for everyone. It can be really hard, scary, and confronting for you and the person you're sharing with, but please know that you are not alone. I hope that you feel embraced by me and my mom through this episode. If you or someone you know is in the process of coming out, please share this episode with them. Enjoy! ⭐ Follow us on Instagram: @wholeyschmidt

This week I am joined in my kitchen by Emily Brogan the Australian girl from Brisbane who has moved to London and is a viral TikTok content creator who is renowned for her videos where she compares Australian culture to London culture.Emily Brogan currently has 269.7K followers on TikTok and 10.3K followers on Instagram.I was really looking forward to talking to Emily because all of her videos on TikTok involve food, although Emily isn't necessarily talking about food itself, she is preparing food at the time of chatting so I wanted to dive into what Emily's relationship with food is like and also how London differs from Australia in terms of supermarkets, brands and overall culture.Emily also always prepares healthy clean food and so I wanted to learn more about her journey to eating clean and where that comes from.Lastly, Emily is also really open about being Gay and as London Pride was celebrated last Saturday this conversation seems extremely relevant where we discuss how Emily knew she was gay, how she told her family and friends and how it is coming to a new city being Gay.This was a truly honest conversation and a great chit-chat about all things food, culture and relationshipsTopics we discussed were:Emily's childhoodWhy she moved to LondonLondon v Australia Emily's questionable love for Costa CoffeeClean eating and Emily's 80/20 rule Being Gay and her journey to telling her family and friendsConfidence To check out Emily's content head to @emilybrogann on both TikTok and Instagram To check out my E-Book click the link below:https://greedyvegan.uk/collections/e-book Hosted on Acast. Happy wine Wednesday! Today is part two of our conversation with my anonymous guest with the alias "Mr Wilson Creek". It's time to get spicy! He gets into the topic of poppers and bathhouses, including his personal experiences with the two. He ends off the episode with his thoughts on being gay and Latino, and how that has affected his relationships among his religious family members. There's mentions of machismo, being accepted and religion. Also.... he just nonchalantly mentioned an exorcism like nothing???? LMAO trust you need to listen to know what I am talking about. He gets real deep today so I hope you enjoy today's episode and appreciate his vulnerability as much as I did. Hey it's Pride Month! We all hear about Prop 8 and how the LDS church paid a boatload of money to make it go their way. We thought the actions the church took in the past which led to these actions needed to be brought to light. We also discuss Patriarch Joseph Fielding Smith who was called to the office while known to be gay, then was fired from the job once the bigots spoke out against him. Jan Phillips' quest has taken her into and out of a religious convent, across the country on a Honda motorcycle, and around the world on a one-woman peace pilgrimage. She is the founder and Executive Director of the Livingkindness Foundation, which created a Learning Center in Nigeria and supports anti-racist creative projects by black women in the U.S. Jan is the author of eleven award-winning books and a thought leader who bridges spiritual intelligence, evolutionary creativity, and social transformation. She has taught in over 25 countries, and has published work in the New York Times, Ms., Newsday, People, Parade Magazine, Christian Science Monitor, Spirituality and Health, Science of Mind, National Catholic Reporter, Sun Magazine. Still on Fire: Field Notes from a Queer Mystic is her first memoir. For more information about Jan Phillips and her work visit her website at www.janphillips.com. TOPICS OF CONVERSATION About the book and her inspiration for writing it. Being Gay. And Catholic. And Suicidal Experiences in the Convent Religion vs. Spirituality Marginalization and Homophobia What is a Queer Mystic? What's next for Jan Phillips? STILL ON FIRE: FIELD NOTES FROM A QUEER MYSTIC Jan Phillips was a devoted Catholic who wanted nothing more than to be a nun and who joyously entered the convent at 18. Two years later, she was dismissed for “a disposition unsuited to religious life, with excessive and exclusive friendships.” She was lesbian. She had always known it. “It was being homosexual that made me want to kill myself [at 12]. As far as I knew, there was nothing worse than being queer. They were perverts, sinners, hated by God, hated by just about everyone. Lezzies, bull dykes, fags, queers, lesbos―all damned, and there I was, one of them.” Still on Fire is a memoir of religious wounding and spiritual healing, of judgment and forgiveness, and of social activism in a world that is in our hands. Phillips traveled the globe on a one-woman peace pilgrimage, raised the consciousness of women, faced her privilege on a trip to India, and is working to dismantle structural racism. Her The Livingkindness Foundation supports schoolchildren in Nigeria. “Any spirituality that does not bring about more justice, more social awareness, more right action in the world is a lame and impotent excuse for faith … My action for justice is my spirituality.” Over the years, Phillips created a life of love, service, community, and prayer. She evolved her understanding of God and came to see herself―and all of us―as the light of the world. “Had I not been born gay … my heart would not have broken in half, would not have opened itself to Love Supreme, would not have been tenderized by life's bitter pounding.” She tells the story of her life with humor and compassion, sharing her poetry, songs, and photos along the way.

Today we're joined by the Rev. Greg Millikin, Rector of Grace Episcopal Church in New Lenox, Illinois. We talk about Ruth, crossing boundaries, and God's unfailing love. Questions for reflection this week: - How does the story of Ruth help us better imagine God's love for us? - What can we learn from the boundary-crossing love in Ruth? Hi everyone! This podcast offers specific help to LGBTQ individuals who are under attack from loved ones who might judge them and criticize their sexual orientation or gender identity. Plus, we all get slammed at times by people who judge us for all sorts of reasons, which can be immensely painful, so most of today's discussion will apply to people more broadly. I recently received a great email from Heather Donnenwirth, a therapist in Ohio who works with LGBTQ individuals. She mentioned that some of her patients struggle with how to respond to critical or judgmental statements from loved ones, including parents, and provided several examples: "Being Gay is wrong/a sin" "If someone doesn't know if they are a man or woman, then something is messed up in their head." "We are worried that you are going to go to Hell for your lifestyle." "We don't want your partner at our house, and we don't want to see any displays of affection." Heather wanted to know how one might use the Five Secrets of Effective Communication to respond to these kinds of criticisms. I invited her to join us in the podcast, and she wrote: I was excited about this topic. Thanks so much for including me. David's work has improved my life in so many ways and Rhonda's Wednesday TEAM training group has been a wonderful way to practice my TEAM skills and improve the kind of care I can offer patients. I appreciate and admire you both so much!! Also, I can't wait to meet Kyle!! I also invited the brilliant and wonderful Kyle Jones to join us. Kyle is a TEAM therapist who joined my training group in 2016 before ever seeing a patient! He is completing his PhD in clinical psychology at Palo Alto University and his dissertation research focuses on psychologists who provide mental health treatment to LGBTQ people. Kyle joined us in 2018 for a FB Live TV program on dating and flirting strategies (https://feelinggood.com/2018/06/17/dating-strategies-today-on-fb-live-sunday-june-17-2018-at-3-pm-pst/) and in 2019 for Podcast 151 on treating LBBTQ individuals with TEAM (https://feelinggood.com/2019/07/29/151-working-with-lgbtq-patients-whats-the-team-cbt-approach/). During today's podcast, we used the excellent statements that Heather provided in role-playing exercises with the Five Secrets of Effective Communication. We used the Intimacy Drill that I developed, which is by far the best way to master the Five Secrets. We also discussed the issue of the inner dialogue that always accompanies the outer dialogue with the person you're in conflict with. If you get anxious, depressed, and angry when criticized, it will be much more difficult to use the Five Secrets skillfully, because you may feel defensive and resentful and inadequate. So some work with the Daily Mood Log may also be invaluable before trying to use the Five Secrets. Finally, we discussed the question of “Outcome Resistance.” This means asking yourself if you WANT to develop a more loving relationship with a loved one who is being highly critical of you because of your sexual orientation, or for any other reason. We decided it is perfectly acceptable to decide NOT to try to develop a more loving relationship, if that feels better to you. It may even be in your best interest or help keep you safe from harm if you're an LGBTQ person facing discrimination and persecution because of your sexual orientation or gender identity. I explained my own anger toward my father who was a successful Lutheran minister. However, when he retired from his ministry at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Phoenix, Arizona, he began working with gay individuals at the Arizona State University, trying to convert them to a heterosexual orientation. This was profoundly disturbing to me, I felt a great deal of shame and anger, and it ultimately led to a sad rupture of our relationship. Rhonda, Heather, Kyle and David

This is one topic that is going to touch the soul. I touch on the question " Does God condemns Homosexuality?" I start from before The beginnings of Christianity and The Islamic faith. I tell you which religions except homosexuality and where the notion of Being Gay or Lesbian became a sin against God and nature despite his first creations having both sex organs. I talk you on a journey to how Religion , just like with black people, used the good book to push an agenda that was not of God. and the last thought I'm going to leave you with will make you smoke two Phatties after the show. Today we're joined by the Rev. Greg Millikin, Rector of Grace Episcopal Church in New Lenox, Illinois. We talk about God's amazing love for us, our call to love one another, the importance of wrestling with (and taking seriously) scripture, and how sometimes we get a little too focused on the wrong things. Questions for reflection this week: - What is it about Leviticus, and these hard texts in particular, that terrifies us? - How can we wrestle serious with scripture, but through the lens of love? For example, how do we see Lev 18 and 20 with an understanding that chapter 19 ("love your neighbor...") is the fulcrum? - How can we engage in dialogue around LGBTQ, sexuality, and similar topics, using whatever privilege and authority we have in our contexts? On gay liberation and sexual politics. After big advances over the past decades, we can now ask, did the gays win? And if so, so what? Mark Simpson in the UK and River Page in Florida join us to discuss whether something was lost in that victory. We ponder whether gay politics was the original identity politics and what happens when a narrow focus on equality triumphs over liberation. Do sexual liberation politics have any future? Plus: how Blairism was the biggest drag act of all. I recently had the chance to sit down with my dear brother-in-law, Charlie Baber to discuss what being his authentic self looked like as he approached 40. Authenticity is a word we toss around on social media, but what if we dug a little deeper into it's true meaning. In being his authentic self, after 38 years of life, Charlie realized that he was gay.In today's episode, Charlie describes what it felt like to come out to his wife, his kids, his church, and most importantly, himself. Is it ok if I don’t know ‘who’ I am…we all want to be somebody. But what is a somebody? —Jedidiah Jenkins Thank you Newsstand Studio at 1 Rockefeller Plaza for providing a place for me to record this episode for y’all! No more Brooklyn closet recording!!! This week, I’m chatting with travel writer, public speaker, and my good friend Jedidiah Jenkins. A few years ago, Jed made the decision to leave his job to pursue his dream: bike to Patagonia and write a book about it. And he did it. The book, To Shake the Sleeping Self, made the NYT Best Sellers List. Multiple times! Fun fact: we used to be roommates, so we share some fun stories from the good old days. We also chat about people-pleasing tendencies, learning to be your truest self, what our biggest fears can teach us, and why it’s important to name our traumas. “When you start to step towards what feels true, you might ruffle feathers, but what you’ll find is people that look up and go ‘Oh my God, me too.’” Being Gay in the Church Jed was raised Christian, realized he was gay and was told it was bad. “It’s a horrible thing to wake up into a consciousness as a child and realize that something innately inside you, everyone if they found out would reject you… That is a horrible darkness.” This led him to try and be perfect. “If I’m not inherently good, then I must earn it.” When he got to be 30 years old, he decided to really live his life, despite his biggest fear of be Jed opens up about the complicated relationship he has with his mother throughout his journey of becoming who he really is. When Your Biggest Fears Become Your Reality I open up about when my biggest fear became a reality: my dad having a drug relapse—and found instead of destroying me; it became one of the biggest access points for growth in my life. “Being tested is the revelation of who you are, so I wouldn’t trade that for the world.”— Jed Jed’s worst fear was rejection by everyone, and the opposite happened. “I’m lucky because I have a mother who loves first and is righteous second.” If you don’t heal your past; it will haunt you. 3 Practical things to do to begin walking towards freedom from trauma: Identify + speak your trauma out loud in safe spaces. Only then can you start to see how even the darkest moments have led you to who and where you are today. Release it—if we don’t heal our past; it will haunt us. Jed shares a quote from Onsite, a trauma workshop experience based in Nashville: “If it’s hysterical, it’s historical.” Even if we’re not aware of the trauma, our bodies and subconscious are. Growth doesn’t mean that the struggle isn’t there anymore. It means you now have the tools to handle the struggle when it pops up. “Walk in the direction of what feels right. If it’s not right, it will tell you.” Resources Keep up with Jedidiah at JedidiahJenkins.com and on IG at @jedidiahjenkins. You can buy his book, Like Streams to the Ocean, here. Reflections from the movie "Boy Erased"Here’s the description of this movie from a PLOT point of view. We recommend you GO & WATCH before listening to our reflections as we will surely spoil it for you. However, come back to us for the discussion as we were deeply moved and compelled to share what “Being Gay” is according to US!Plot:Jared Eamons[a] (Lucas Hedges) is the son of Marshall Eamons (Russell Crowe), a successful car dealer and Baptist preacher in Arkansas, and Nancy Eamons (Nicole Kidman), a self-styled hairdresser. He begins his first day at the Love In Action gay conversion therapy assessment program. Chief therapist Victor Sykes (Joel Edgerton) tells the group that their sexuality is a choice influenced by poor parenting. He instructs them to perform harsh "moral inventories" of themselves and their families and requires them not to tell anyone else about what occurs during the sessions. Nancy rents a nearby motel for her and Jared to stay in until he completes the assessment; however, Jared soon discovers that the therapy has no set end point, and may require him to move into an on-campus home if he fails to convince Sykes that he has become straight.Jared's life prior to entering the program shows him well-adjusted and happy, though he breaks up with his girlfriend upon starting college. Once there, he becomes friends with another student, Henry (Joe Alwyn), and has a brief, romantic, intimate encounter with an art student, Xavier (Théodore Pellerin). While staying the night in Jared's dorm room, Henry rapes Jared and tearfully confesses that he has done the same to another young man. Traumatized, Jared returns home to recover. Henry calls the Eamons' home and poses as a school counselor in order to out Jared and ensure his silence. Jared confesses to being attracted to men. After consulting with other pastors, Marshall signs him up for conversion therapy, to which Jared reluctantly agrees.Weeks into his therapy, Jared gets to know the other attendees also seeking to become straight. Some, like Jon (Xavier Dolan), are fanatically devoted to conversion to the point where they refuse to even touch other men. Others, like Gary (Troye Sivan), are merely "playing the part", pretending that the therapy is working until they can be released and return to a normal life. At her insistence, Jared lets Nancy read the program's handbook, which is full of questionable psychology and obvious grammatical errors. After failing an exercise, attendee Cameron (Britton Sear) is humiliated by Sykes in front of the group and intimidated with a fake funeral service. Cameron is then beaten with bibles by both the therapists and his own family and forcibly dunked in a bathtub in one of the program's prison-like homes. What does it mean when someone identifies as “mostly-straight?” In episode 23, we talk to Dr. Ritch Savin-Williams about sexual fluidity and the Kinsey scale. Ever since the development of the Kinsey scale for sexual orientation, there has been significant research on sexual fluidity. While some easily self-identify as gay, straight, bisexual, or pansexual, there are others who’s sexual orientation isn’t as clearly defined by society. Some folks feel as though they are “mostly” gay or straight, but many confuse this concept with bisexuality. On this week’s episode Dr. Zhana and Joe spoke with Dr. Ritch Savin-Williams on his extensive research on sexual fluidity, specifically those who are considered “mostly-straight.” About Our Guest Dr. Ritch C. Savin-Williams, Professor Emeritus at Cornell University, has written Bisexual Young Men [draft], Mostly Straight: Sexual Fluidity among Men (2017), Becoming Who I Am: Young Men on Being Gay (2016), and The New Gay Teenager (2005). He is a licensed clinical psychologist and has served as an expert witness on same-sex marriage, gay adoption, and Boy Scout court cases. Dr. Savin-Williams has consulted for media outlets such as MTV, 20/20, Oprah Winfrey, The Today Show, National Geographic, National Public Radio, Rolling Stone, Time, New York Times, and Washington Post. Dr. Savin-Williams blogs on Sex/Romance for Psychology Today. Don’t Miss This Week’s Foreplay According to Dr. Helen Fischer from the Kinsey Institute, men who own dogs get more dates. Owning a dog shows that you are responsible and are able to care for someone other than yourself. Various studies have backed up this claim, including one done in 1992 that found subjects in photographs were rated as happier and more likable when they posed with a dog. Also, a 2013 study found men who were described to volunteers as only interested in short-term flings were more likely to be seen as potential long-term lovers if they owned a dog.
