Mike highlights the different elements of irreligion, namely tempting God in words or deeds, sacrilege, and simony. He emphasizes that the sin of tempting God is easy to fall into when we are deeply troubled or afraid. Fr. Mike also spends time unpacking the many different aspects of atheism, and its impact on our world today. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2118-2126. The final sets of reasons for my secularity

“Irreligion, the lack or rejection of religious beliefs or practices. Irreligion is a broad concept that encompasses many different positions and draws upon an array of philosophical and intellectual perspectives, including atheism, agnosticism, skepticism, rationalism, and secularism. These perspectives themselves are multifaceted, such that people who are irreligious may hold a wide variety of specific beliefs about religion or be related to religion in varied ways. Around the world, hundreds of millions of people do not identify with any religion, particularly in China, which is officially an atheist state. The term irreligion can be challenging to apply in specific circumstances and is frequently characterized differently depending on context. Surveys of religious belief sometimes use lack of identification with a religion as a marker of irreligion. However, this can be misleading, as in some cases a person may identify with a religious cultural institution while not actually holding the doctrines of that institution or participating in its religious practice. Some scholars define irreligion as the active rejection of religion, as opposed to the mere absence of religion. “ I learned that “Spare the rod, spoil the child”, “Trinity” “Denomination”, and “The Lord helps those who help themselves” are not in the Bible. “An interesting quote from the 1915 “Gospel Advocate” (Pg 589) says: “The word ‘Church' is really not a translation of any word that was used by either Christ or His Apostles, but is the Anglican form of a different word which Roman Catholicism substituted in place of the word used by Christ and His Apostles… It is in our english scriptures by order of King James, who instructed his translators of 1611 not to translate the word “Ecclesia” by either ‘Congregation' or ‘Assembly' but to use the word ‘Church' instead of a translation.” “What does the word “Church” mean and from where did it come from? The scriptures? No.” “The word “Church” is neither Hebrew nor Greek. In point of fact, when these languages were translated into English Bibles, the word “Church” was already in existence. The greek word used in the renewed covenant for “Church” is “Ekklesia” which basically means “Called Out ones”. Ekklesia does not refer to a building, but rather a group of people. Proper English translations should read: Congregation, Assembly or Group. Strangely in Acts 19:32, 39 and 41, Ekklesia is the word that is translated as “Assembly”, but in other passages, it is translated as “Church”. Jesus and His disciples never spoke the word religion. “The term religion comes from both Old French and Anglo-Norman (1200s AD) and means respect for sense of right, moral obligation, sanctity, what is sacred, reverence for the gods.[15][16] It is ultimately derived from the Latin word religiō. According to Roman philosopher Cicero, religiō comes from relegere: re (meaning "again") + lego (meaning "read"), where lego is in the sense of "go over", "choose", or "consider carefully". Contrarily, some modern scholars such as Tom Harpur and Joseph Campbell have argued that religiō is derived from religare: re (meaning "again") + ligare ("bind" or "connect"), which was made prominent by St. Augustine following the interpretation given by Lactantius in Divinae institutiones, IV, 28.[17][18] The medieval usage alternates with order in designating bonded communities like those of monastic orders: "we hear of the 'religion' of the Golden Fleece, of a knight 'of the religion of Avys'".[19] “From Middle English sinne, synne, sunne, zen, from Old English synn ("sin"), from Proto-West Germanic *sunnju, from Proto-Germanic *sunjō ("truth, excuse") and *sundī, *sundijō ("sin"), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁s-ónt-ih₂, from *h₁sónts ("being, true", implying a verdict of "truly guilty" against an accusation or charge), from *h₁es- ("to be"); compare Old English sōþ ("true"; see sooth). Doublet of suttee.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

This is me. “Irreligion is defined as a rejection of religion, but whether it is distinct from lack of religion is disputed. The Encyclopedia of religion and society defines it as the "rejection of religion in general or any of its more specific organized forms, as distinct from absence of religion";[5] while the Oxford English dictionary defines it as want of religion; hostility to or disregard of religious principles; irreligious conduct;[6] and the Merriam Webster dictionary defines it as "neglectful of religion : lacking religious emotions, doctrines, or practices".[7] A lot of believers value The Old Testament over the red letters of Jesus. Nonbelievers read the entire Bible, lots of believers don't. Nonbelievers read the Bible, lots of believers don't. Lastly, nonbelievers are courageous about reading the Bible and lots of believers are afraid to read the Bible. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Religion was designed to conduct itself as a hate group: "A hate group is a social group that advocates and practices hatred, hostility, or violence towards members of a race, ethnicity, nation, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other designated sector of society." Religion was also designed for hate crimes: "A hate crime (also known as a bias-motivated crime or bias crime) is a prejudice-motivated crime which occurs when a perpetrator targets a victim because of their membership (or perceived membership) of a certain social group or racial demographic. Examples of such groups can include, and are almost exclusively limited to ethnicity, disability, language, nationality, physical appearance, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Non-criminal actions that are motivated by these reasons are often called "bias incidents." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

THE GOSPELRomans 1:16, 17 (NASB)3 Ways To Live:I. Irreligious: Be Your Own Savior Avoiding God by living as you want and disregarding God’s Laws.II. Religious: Be Your Own SaviourAvoiding God by working very hard to be good and obey God’s Laws so He will give you a good life. III. The Gospel: Looking to God Alone For Your Salvation. I. Irreligious: “I don’t really have to obey anyone but myself.”II. Religious: “I obey, therefore I am accepted by God.”III. The Gospel: “I’m accepted by God at infinite cost to Jesus Christ, therefore I obey.”The Parable Of The Prodigal Son - Luke Chapter 15:20-32The older brother is furious... and reveals he’s just like the younger brother. How? He wants the Father’s things and not the Father. One is more in love with his prostitutes than the Father. The other is more in love with his own morality than the Father. Both of these are, in fact, love of self! One, is the way of self-discovery and self-indulgence. The other, is the way of moral conformity and moral performance. Both of their hearts want the father’s things, not the Father! Both of their hearts generated strategies to get what they wanted. The Result: Both alienated from the Father. One was spiritually lost away from home. The other was spiritually lost at home.In the dramatic end of the story, the younger son comes to the Father’s feast and repents. Just like the two sons, there are two ways to be your own Saviour and Lord! There Is A 3rd Way To Live.He sought to bring both of them in! We need to learn to repent, not only of our bad things, but for the reason we did our good things. The older brother’s reason for not coming into the Father’s feast: “I’ve never disobeyed” Vs. 29 It’s not his bad deeds that are keeping him away from his Father’s feast. It’s his good works and his love of his own righteousness that isolate Him from his Father. We need to see what it cost the Father to bring us home. Remember, all the Father had was already given to the older brother. The Father could bring the younger brother home, but it wasn’t free. It was free to the younger son, but not to the family. The Father cannot bring the repentant prodigal home, except at the expense of the older brother. A Good Elder Brother Would Have Agreed. He would have celebrated! The Younger Son Did Not Have A Good Elder Brother. But We Do! Romans 8:29Jesus Christ on the Cross was stripped naked, so that we could receive the Father’s robe of righteousness. Jesus Christ on the Cross was cast out, so that we could be brought in to God’s family by grace.Jesus Christ on the Cross paid our penalty, so that we don’t have to pay that penalty and we can be brought home. The Gospel is not Religion or Irreligion. The Gospel is not Morality or Immorality. The Gospel is not something halfway between the two. It’s something else altogether. It’s a third way!Are you being transformed by the power of the Gospel into the image of our true elder brother, Jesus Christ!Luke 15:20-32

The USA is arguably the most religious democracy in the western world, while Denmark is arguably the least. Will the situation remain this way? Will Denmark stay relatively irreligious, or will religion start to grow stronger in the years ahead? This lecture argues that Danes will remain secular in the years ahead, and perhaps even come to see religion as part of the problem in the world – the USA included – rather than part of the solution. Lector Phil Zuckerman, from Study of Religion, Aarhus University guides us through the differences between Denmark and the USA.

Jewel Lake Parish Sermon Podcast

Last week, we saw that religion can't connect us to God; only Jesus can do that. When we obey the rules and perform the rituals, too often we don't do it perfectly, or for the right reasons. But what about people who don't do it at all? What about people who break all the rules? What about bad people whose rule-breaking hurts other people? If God doesn't want religion, what does he say about irreligion? The answer can be found in the story of Jesus' encounter with a tax collector named Zacchaeus. Pastor Luke looks at Luke 19:1-10 in "Irreligion," the concluding message in his series, "(Untitled Series)."

John Allen Paulos is Professor of Mathematics at Temple University. He has been celebrated as a writer and speaker about the importance of mathematical literacy, although he is also drawn to other related subjects, such as the mathematical basis of humor. He is the author of Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy and its Consequences, as well as A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper and A Mathematician Plays the Stock Market. His latest book is Irreligion: A Mathematician Explains Why the Arguments for God Just Don't Add Up. In this discussion with D.J. Grothe, John Allen Paulos explores some classical proof of God's existence, and why he discounts them. He criticizes some mathematical proofs for theism, including those based on statistics, and explains how free market economics might challenge Intelligent Design theory. He also details why it is important for the non-mathematician to know math, and how mathematics might be beautiful.
