John Charles McQuaid, archbishop of Dublin from 1940 to 1972, was a colossus of the Catholic Church in his day, famous (or infamous) for his opposition to health minister Noel Browne's Mother and Child Scheme. Less well known is his pioneering work on Irish emigrant welfare in Britain and his influence on the architecture and planning of Dublin. Join editor Tommy Graham in discussion with Brian Harvey (social researcher), Mary Kenny (The way we were: Catholic Ireland since 1922), David McCullagh (biographer of Eamon de Valera) and Ellen Rowley (architectural historian). This Hedge School is supported by the National Library of Ireland
BREAKING NEWS: Announcing the name of the archbishop who will offer the most prominent Latin Mass of 2023 (The Chartres Pilgrimage in France) In this episode of The Remnant Underground, Michael J. Matt starts off with a look at the latest indicator of full-blown apostacy in Catholic Ireland – a muezzin inside a Catholic church, calling the Irish to Muslim prayer. The Catholic countries are dropping like flies. Well played, Vatican II! Not to be outdone, the German bishops are hellbent on schism as well, with the head of the German Bishops' Conference claiming that God wants sodomites to receive the blessing of the Church. Meanwhile, Word War III heats up, as Pope Francis's official newspaper calls on Europeans to give up heating their homes for Lent, since doing so supports “Russia's war machine.” Speaking of lunacy, Lindsey Graham and Sean Hannity call on Clueless Joe to start shooting down Russian fighter planes. So apparently our Neocon friends learned nothing from their mistakes in Iraq 20 years ago. Michael adds “Lucky Lindsey” to the Lunatics of Davos roster, as George Soros comes right out and admits who's really behind the war in Ukraine. And finally, Pope Francis's move to divide the clans – why is he doing it, and will we let him get away with it? The inner event that awakens Kundalini remains a mystery. In Margaret Dempsey's case, years of Buddhist meditation, galvanized by a traumatic contact with an attractive man, triggered the “uprising of Shakti.” Her honesty in not attempting to glamorize the awakening attests to its authenticity. The author's real Self, to which Kundalini eventually brought her, is in evidence from page one, as she describes her upbringing in Catholic Ireland, her days in a boarding school run by nuns, her training as a nurse, and her escape to London, New York and India.

Did you know that good sex education is the best way to prevent future sexual violence? Katrina Marson is a criminal lawyer who understands what happens when we don't teach our children about consent, pleasure and the very basics of sex. After prosecuting sexual crimes in the courts she decided to put some solid research behind the difference good sex ed can have on the outcomes for young adults. Emma is the founder of Emma Tynan International, and The Channel Society ™, where she is passionate about supporting women, helping them to identify their gifts and to stretch beyond their limiting beliefs whether self-imposed, familial, or cultural. The eldest of two daughters, Emma was born and raised in Catholic Ireland to human rights activist parents who were also journalists. Our conversation explores Emma's early gift of seeing the usually unseen, turbulent times at school with abusive teachers, and how she overcame a long period of depression in her adolescence and young adulthood to become a healer for others. After living all over the globe, Emma now lives in Seattle with her husband, two boys, and their pug. It's from this idyllic sacred indigenous land that Emma joins me to chat, taking a break from the writing of her first book which speaks to the profound intersection of politics, spirituality, and the impact on women. Birth Series, Episode #1 of 4. Symphysiotomy. Probably not a word you've heard before - and if you have, I'm sorry? Symphysiotomy is an obstetric procedure in which a person's pubic symphysis cartilage is cut to widen the pelvis for childbirth. Yes. Gross. I know. For most of the 19th century, symphysiotomy was a new solution to difficult births, and, to some doctors, preferable to Caesarean section, and certainly to the gruesome craniotomy. By the 1930s, though, in countries where childbirth had been medicalized, the symphysiotomy was phased out in favor of the safer C section - except Ireland. While surgical solutions to difficult childbirths increased in American and European obstetrics throughout the twentieth-century generally, it was only in Ireland that the use of symphysiotomy increased. Why, for the love of God, WHY, you ask? Let's dig in. According to Mr Belloc, Ireland will prevail in the faith, and it will be done because St Patrick watches over her. We should remember that in these dark days for the Irish people. NEW PODCAST: "Michael J. Matt Show" https://remnantnewspaper.com/web/index.php/more/the-michael-j-matt-show Hey, remember 'contact tracing'? Whatever happened to that? Joe Biden's mask mandate never happened, either. What gives? Even Team Gates is falling apart. Did the lunatics at Davos jump the shark? In this edition of The Editor's Desk, Michael J. Matt talks good news. With mask mandates collapsing all over the country, and Blue state governors losing in court, there's an opportunity to push back against the COVID Stupid. Michael explains how even France is slowly loosening restrictions, while little Ireland brings up the rear. In fact, post-Catholic Ireland is almost as tyrannical as post-Catholic Canada--two countries run by little men as maniacal as Joe Stalin but now with the technology to make the Orwell happen. By the way, Justin Trudeau est un petit homme extrêmement ennuyeux. Meanwhile, DeSantis, who's a Catholic, is ignoring the Florida bishops' protest against his lifting of all COVID restrictions. So, now that Grandma can get vaxxed anytime she wants to, the anti-science bishops get to go pound sand. Right? Michael also talks COVID's MASSIVE silver lining: Modernist, liberal, progressive Christianity--especially in the Catholic Church--was exposed over 2020 and is now on life support, while traditionalists are gaining strength and numbers all over the world. Michael closes with a truly amazing sign of hope out of Poland, where the Sign the Cross transforms one of the children of darkness into a child of light... and it's all caught on video. A Brazilian once observed, "In Ireland even the cattle in the fields are either Catholic or Protestant. You can tell which by looking at them."
Damian's guest, the celebrated Irish journalist, broadcaster and playwright Mary Kenny, offers a nuanced analysis of the powerful and paradoxical world in which she grew up: one in which Catholic clergy and lay people could be simultaneously fervently pious, warm-hearted and yet paralysed by petty snobbery. She talks about how the Irish Free State handed far too much power to bishops and priests. In effect, they replaced the disappearing Anglo-Irish nobility as the new aristocracy of rural Ireland, exercising an authority over people's lives that could be generous or malevolent and sometimes a mixture of both. Holy Smoke is a series of podcasts where Damian Thompson dissects the most important and controversial topics in world religion, with a range of high profile guests. Rarely has a religious culture collapsed more rapidly than that of Catholic Ireland, which just 30 years ago seemed indestructible. Incredibly, it looks as if the Irish Church will have ordained more bishops than priests in 2020. It goes without saying that the Irish abuse crisis has hugely accelerated the process of secularisation in what was once the most Catholic of countries. Young people in Ireland now refer to the clergy with a withering disdain verging on hatred. My guest today, the celebrated Irish journalist, broadcaster and playwright Mary Kenny, offers a more nuanced analysis of the powerful and paradoxical world in which she grew up: one in which Catholic clergy and lay people could be simultaneously fervently pious, warm-hearted and yet paralysed by petty snobbery. I think it's a gripping interview, full of the little details that make Irish short stories so compulsively readable.
What it was like being raised in Catholic Ireland. From confessions, to confirmations, we talk about what growing up Catholic in Ireland was like and how it has impacted our adulthood.

#17: Terri Harrison gave birth to her son Niall at St Patrick's Mother and Child Institution in 1973, there he was taken from her and adopted without her consent. David Kinsella was born in St Patrick's and adopted, but his longing to meet his biological mother never disappeared. They share their stories with host Hayden Moore while journalist Alison O'Reilly, who has covered Mother and Baby Homes extensively, gives some background.
Dublin-based songwriter Paddy Hanna today reveals “Cannibals”, the first track from his forthcoming album The Hill. “Cannibals” is out now on all digital platforms. The Hill, which will be released on September 25th, is available to pre-order via https://www.strangebrew.ie/ As Paddy explains about the new single - “Cannibals is a maze of conflicted thought, it asks the question, are we decent people or demons in cheap wigs? The track mixes organic with inorganic sounds to create that conflict, acoustic instruments blend with found drum sounds while woozy synthesisers create an uncertain haze. The end-result, I hope, is something resembling Ennio Morricone by way of Late period Tom Waits, but I’ll let you draw your own conclusions”. The album features Girl Band’s Adam Faulkner and Daniel Fox on Drums & Double Bass, Daniel Fitzpatrick (Badhands, The Mighty Stef) on guitar & Keys and Jill Redmond on Vocals. The record was produced by Daniel Fox and the artwork was designed by Jill Redmond. Paddy explains further about the album – “We lost ourselves on the Hill, Daniel, Daniel, Adam and I. a seemingly endless spell of isolation spent banging sheet metal, rusted hubcaps and blistering our fingers through non stop recording. The Hill is an internal musical about how the past and the present exist at the same time in our minds. It deals with the struggles of mental health, the sometimes difficult search for happiness and the moral conflict of growing up in Catholic Ireland. As a listener I want you to take a seat inside my head, to smell the west cork air, to feel the gravel under your feet. In order to get this we set up ambient mics outside our makeshift studio to capture the natural landscape, we wandered boatyards and an abandoned train station recording old bits of metal we would clang, to give the album a sense of place. Sonically we also wanted to step away from the String sections used on Leafy Stiletto, opting instead to create melodies and tones using vocals and synthesisers. Most importantly however, I just wanted to put the past behind me on this record, I wanted to leave it on the hill. I hope you enjoy my therapy”. Hanna’s third album will be released via Strange Brew
In this episode I speak to my mother Marie about her experience growing up in the strict Catholic Ireland of the 1950's and 60's. This podcast contains sensitive subject matter, listener discretion is advised.

Eilish O’ Carroll plays Winne McGoogan on the hugely successful sitcom ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’, which has not only been a big hit in the UK and Ireland but also in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. As part of Mrs Brown’s Boys, she has appeared on a spin-off TV chat show (All around to Mrs Brown’s) and a box-office hit movie (Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie). The show has also won a whole raft of awards including National Television Awards and a Bafta. She is currently in the middle of a UK and Ireland arena tour for a musical version of the show. Eilish herself has toured with her own one woman show entitled ‘Live. Laugh. Love’, which received rave reviews at the Edinburgh Festival in 2016. Eilish is an incredible woman and she gave a really candid interview. I met up with her in Dublin and we chatted about; her lack of awareness of homosexuality growing up in holy Catholic Ireland of the 50s and 60s, how turning 40 and falling for a woman was the catalyst for her coming out process, how she struggled with her sexuality throughout her 40s, telling her husband she was in love with a woman, the misconceptions she held herself about the lesbian lifestyle coming out to her friends and neighbours and the bigotry she encountered whilst campaigning for marriage equality in 2015. To mark the selection this year (2019) of Edna O'Brien's Country Girls trilogy as Dublin's ‘One City One Book', the History Ireland Hedge School considered the issue of censorship. Banned on its release in 1960, The Country Girls is often credited with breaking the silence on sexual matters in ‘Catholic Ireland'. While by the 1970s such censorship had been considerably relaxed, it was replaced by political censorship in the form of Section 31. That in turn has passed but we are still left with the censorship of onerous defamation laws, not to mention internet and social media ‘trolling', which has added a new twist to the censorship debate. To discuss these and related matters, History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham, was joined by Donal Fallon (Come Here To Me), Angela Nagle (Kill All Normies), Mary Kenny (Goodbye to Catholic Ireland) and Niall Meehan (Head of Journalism, Griffith College).

"Beyond the Vote: Is Catholic Ireland Dead?" with Dr. Timothy O'Donnell For centuries, Ireland was a defender and promoter of the Catholic faith. But last year, over 66% of Irish voters chose to repeal the right to life extended to unborn persons in their constitution. How did Ireland get to this devastating point? Dr. Timothy O’Donnell examined that and the links to those issues here in the United States during a lecture on March 27, 2019 in our Lyceum Auditorium. Dr. Timothy O’Donnell is the President of Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia. He was the first layman to receive a doctorate in Ascetical and Mystical Theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. In 2002, he was appointed a consulter to the Pontifical Council for the Family by Pope John Paul II. Pope Benedict XVI renewed that appointment in 2009. He is the author of Heart of the Redeemer and Swords Around the Cross. He has produced numerous theological and historical programs for EWTN. Founded in 1795, the Basilica of Saint Mary in Old Town Alexandria is the first Catholic parish established in Virginia. Pope Francis named the church a minor basilica on December 6, 2017 due to its important role in the growth of the Catholic Church in North America.
When Pope John Paul II came to Ireland in 1979, half the population turned out to see him, the BBC World Service presenter Nuala McGovern was amongst them. When Pope Francis arrives for the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, he will find a changed country and a Catholic Church rocked by the scandal of clerical sexual abuse. Nuala returns to her home city of Dublin, to find out if the “Francis Factor” can turn the tide of a Catholic Church whose once mighty hold on this country is has been undermined Pope Francis will certainly fine a more secular Ireland with the role of the church greatly diminished and changes to the constitution including the vote to legalise same sex marriage, reform to strict abortion laws and divorce. But not everyone has turned their back on the Church and there remains a core of faithful Catholics in this country of Saints and Scholars. Many will still come to see him, half a million tickets have been taken for the papal mass in Dublin's Phoenix Park and another visit to the shrine at Knock in the west of Ireland, was booked out within hours. Nuala discovers ash returns home that its more than just the waning influence of the Catholic Church that has caused this most radical shift in culture and country. Melvyn Bragg and guests Roy Foster, Jeri Johnson and Katherine Mullin discuss A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce's groundbreaking 1916 novel about growing up in Catholic Ireland. Many novelists choose their own young life as the subject for their first book. But very few have subjected themselves to the intense self-scrutiny of the great Irish novelist James Joyce. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, published in 1916, Joyce follows his alter ego, Stephen Dedalus, from babyhood to young adulthood. He takes us from Stephen wetting the bed, through a teenage visit to a prostitute, and on through religious terrors to the prospect of freedom. When it was published, the book met with shock at its graphic honesty. Joyce shows Stephen wrestling with the pressures of his family, his Church and his nation. Yet this was far from being a straightforward youthful tirade. Joyce's novel is also daringly experimental, taking us deep into Stephen's psyche. And since its publication almost a century ago, it has had a huge influence on novelists across the world. With: Roy Foster, Carroll Professor of Irish History and Fellow of Hertford College, OxfordJeri Johnson, Senior Fellow in English at Exeter College, OxfordKatherine Mullin, Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Leeds.
