More than half of Kiwis have no religion, new data shows. Census figures released today shows the proportion of people without religion is now at 51.6 percent. Massey University Emeritus Professor of Religion, Peter Lineham says Christianity has been declining since the 1960s. "It speeded up a tremendous amount in the period from 2006 to 2018 - and it's still going on." Lineham says the speed of people choosing no religion is reducing, suggesting other religions may be replacing Christianity. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jennifer and Courtney were three-year-old twins. And they were excited about preschool. In fact, they were so excited they got up in the middle of the night in their Omaha, Nebraska home and walked out of the house to make the six-block walk to school. Well all this while, their parents were sound asleep. You say, "Oh, isn't that cute?" No! See, snow was everywhere that night and the temperature was nine below zero. The girls were reported missing at 4:04 a.m. after family members awoke to find this light on and the door open. Two police officers started driving the route to school, hoping that they'd find the girls before it was too late. At one point, their squad car was stopped by the ice on a steep hill which they decided to investigate. And there they found these little footprints, and finally they found barefoot Courtney wearing an open coat and kneeling beside her sister Jennifer, who was face down in the snow wearing socks but no coat. Even though Jennifer was near death when they found her, both the girls miraculously survived. If someone hadn't come looking for them though, they would have died. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "What No Religion Can Do For You." Two little girls were lost and dying, and they wouldn't have made it back home themselves. Their only hope was for someone to look for them and find them. It's always that way for someone who's lost, including you and me. See, lost is actually a word in the Bible that's used to describe our spiritual condition. It's because, as the Bible says, "Each of us has wandered away from God like sheep." We're created to have our life revolve around our Creator. But we've all decided to have it revolve around ourselves instead. And that wandering has taken us away from the home we were made for - a personal love relationship with the God who made us. We're lost. We're away and ultimately dying. If you're honest with yourself right now, maybe the word lost pretty much describes how you're feeling. Our word for today from the Word of God, Luke 19:10, is awfully good news. Speaking of Jesus it says, "The Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost." Jesus is God come looking for you; a lost child that He loves very much. Notice He did exactly what those police officers did for those lost little girls - seeking/saving. Those girls had nothing to do with their own rescue. Their only hope was a rescuer coming for them and saving them. That's like you and me. Here's the simple fact: you cannot find God. God has to find you, and that's pretty radical. It means that all our religious efforts to get to God, whatever your religion, all our self-improvement will not get us home to a God whose standard is perfection. A lost child doesn't find himself. He or she gets found by the rescuer. All our spirituality, all our ceremonies, all our services, all our attempts to complete ourselves by finding God through spiritual searching or exercises still leave us lost. According to the Bible, we are that little girl, hopelessly lost, face down in the snow about to die spiritually. And Jesus is that policeman coming to where we are to rescue us. But this rescue involves eternal death, the price tag for our sin. This rescue cost the Rescuer his life, as Jesus died on that cross, taking all the punishment and the hell that you and I deserve. And the Rescuer comes right now to where you are to bring you home from your "lostness." Your role is to put yourself totally in the hands of Jesus, the only one who can bring you back. You're finally home when you tell Jesus you're putting your total trust in Him to be your Rescuer from your sin. Today would be the day to do that and our website can help you make sure you belong to Him. Go there today. It's ANewStory.com. You'll never find your Creator. You're lost, but He has found you at the cost of His life. Now, let Him bring you home before it's too late.

From precognitive dreams and telepathic visions to near-death experiences, UFO encounters, and beyond, so-called impossible phenomena are not supposed to happen. But they do happen—all the time. Jeffrey J. Kripal asserts that the impossible is a function not of reality but of our everchanging assumptions about what is real. How to Think Impossibly invites us to think about these fantastic (yet commonplace) experiences as an essential part of being human, expressive of a deeply shared reality that is neither mental nor material but gives rise to both. Thinking with specific individuals and their extraordinary experiences in vulnerable, open, and often humorous ways, Kripal interweaves humanistic and scientific inquiry to foster an awareness that the fantastic is real, the supernatural is super natural, and the impossible is possible. Jeffrey J. Kripal holds the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University. He is the author of numerous books, including The Superhumanities: Historical Precedents, Moral Objections, New Realities, The Flip: Epiphanies of Mind and the Future of Knowledge, Authors of the Impossible: The Paranormal and the Sacred, Esalen: America and the Religion of No Religion, Mutants and Mystics: Science Fiction, Superhero Comics, and the Paranormal, and just published, also by the University of Chicago Press, How to Think Impossibly: About Souls, UFOs, Time, Belief, and Everything Else.

Guess what? Jeffrey J. Kripal, you know him, you love him, is on this episode of Earth: A Love Story. Jeff holds the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University. He worked with Rice's special collections director to create and host the Archives of the Impossible, which is a collection of accounts detailing the supernatural, including thousands of firsthand abduction accounts, letters written to Whitley and Anne Strieber, once highly classified government remote reviewing files and has become one of the largest and most significant collections of research materials related to these marginalized and tabboed topics in the world. Jeff also organized the Archives of the Impossible conferences. He is the author of over a dozen books, including Authors of the Impossible: The Paranormal and the Sacred, Esalen: America and the Religion of No Religion, Kali's Child: The Mystical and the Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna and The Flip: Epiphanies of Mind and the Future of Knowledge. His present areas of writing and research include the articulation of a New Comparativism within the study of religion that will put “the impossible” back on the table again, a robust and even conversation between the sciences and the humanities, and the mapping of an emergent mythology or “Super Story” within paranormal communities and individual visionaries. Jeff's new book, How to Think Impossibly: About Souls, UFOs, Time, Belief and Everything Else is out now. Through my own personal lens, there have been a few really pivotal interactions with Jeff's work which have informed my own journey and work. First, Jeff is the one who said, in reference to experiencer accounts, If you haven't heard about the trauma or the sex, you haven't heard the whole story. Second, he said We need to tell better and better stories so that we can have better and better experiences. We essentially control our future and our children's children's future. We can constantly make a different ‘movie' that we then exist in and experience ourselves in. (Which, you guys, I think is evolution through creativity). Saqer contends that the Hamas October 7 massacre was a catastrophe not only for the Israelis, but for humanity in general. He condemns Hamas as a terror organization that does not represent Arabs or Islam, emphasizing that terrorism has no religion. He discusses the resilience of Israel-Emirati relations in the context of the Israel-Hamas war, and clarifies why the Abraham Accords contribute more to advancing the Palestinian cause than to Hamas's strategy of terrorism and violent struggle. In addition, he suggests lessons for Israelis and Palestinians drawn from the UAE's experience in dealing with radical Islam and promoting tolerance.

This is me. “Irreligion is defined as a rejection of religion, but whether it is distinct from lack of religion is disputed. The Encyclopedia of religion and society defines it as the "rejection of religion in general or any of its more specific organized forms, as distinct from absence of religion";[5] while the Oxford English dictionary defines it as want of religion; hostility to or disregard of religious principles; irreligious conduct;[6] and the Merriam Webster dictionary defines it as "neglectful of religion : lacking religious emotions, doctrines, or practices".[7] A lot of believers value The Old Testament over the red letters of Jesus. Nonbelievers read the entire Bible, lots of believers don't. Nonbelievers read the Bible, lots of believers don't. Lastly, nonbelievers are courageous about reading the Bible and lots of believers are afraid to read the Bible. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Americans are told that they are divided and polarized, but is it true? No Politics, No Religion?: How America's Code of Conduct Conceals Our Unity (Political Animal Press, 2022) put this proposition to the test - with surprising results.  "No Politics, No Religion" is a common saying that discussions of politics and religion should be avoided at the dinner table or social gatherings due to their tendency to divide people. In No Politics, No Religion? Gregory Harms argues that this is absolutely wrong. These are precisely the topics we should be discussing...and the topics which most clearly point to the deep level of agreement in American society that is often overlooked in favor of surface-level polarization. In clear and accessible terms, Harms lays out evidence from philosophy, science, history, and contemporary polling data that debate of politics and religion can lead to greater agreement and more civil discourse. From Enlightenment philosophy, to twentieth and twenty-first century primatology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and psychology, there is an agreement that the centuries-old "humans are prone to sin" thesis is wrong. Human nature is not a thin civilized veneer wrapped over a dark primal core. Sympathy, pity, cooperation, and desire to be loved (and to be lovely) are just as central to our being. Interestingly, this story can be connected to American politics. Americans are bombarded with the message that they are divided. But it turns out Americans are in far greater agreement than they are told. When we consult the public opinion record, we see overwhelming agreement. America is not divided. And talking about politics and religion can help bring that into focus. Learn more about your ad choices. Human rights has no religion! The golden rule has no religion! The silver rule has no religion! Unconditional love, sacrificial love, compassionate love, selfless love, and companionate love has no religions! Humanists seek to understand the universe by using science and its methods of critical inquiry-logical reasoning, empirical evidence, and skeptical evaluation of conjectures and conclusions-to obtain reliable knowledge. Humanists affirm that humans have the freedom to give meaning, value, and purpose to their lives by their own independent thought, free inquiry, and responsible, creative activity. Humanists stand for the building of a more humane, just, compassionate, and democratic society using a pragmatic ethics based on human reason, experience, and reliable knowledge-an ethics that judges the consequences of human actions by the well-being of all life on Earth." -– Steven Schafersman  "Humanism is an approach to life based on reason and our common humanity, recognizing that moral values are properly founded on human nature and experience alone." – The Bristol Humanist Group. I was called every disability slur in profane language that you can think of from a few of the organized crime figures, the rapists actually. The organized crime figures lied about my being a midget when it came to making me drive custom made, luxury vehicles. The criminals lied to their car dealership friends about it. The drug customers like the other civilians were “protective” of me in terms of exchanging words and fists with a few criminals who tried to start drama with me. I believed in eternal sin as a five-year old child. All of my doubts are released (which aids in my restful sleep and my being enthused while awake.) I'm not feuding with Jesus and Jesus isn't feuding with me. The fourth of five muscles the church needs to strengthen in order to be fit, agile, and ready for God's now is Distributing Power. Dr. Joerg Rieger is the Distinguished Professor of Theology and the Cal Turner Chancellor's Chair of Wesleyan Studies at Vanderbilt University. He has spent the last two decades addressing the relation of theology and public life, reflecting on the misuse of power in religion, politics, and economics.  In this conversation, Joerg reminds us that distributed power is at the heart of Jesus' ministry and the ministry of John Wesley and the people called Methodists. He connects spiritual practices with distributing power, inviting us to do the work of theology so that we might grow in holy power not to hoard it but to channel it. This conversation with Joerg is full of that holy power. We can't wait for you to listen!   QUOTES “I remember years ago there was some theologian who wrote a book saying we have to ask more God questions and less me questions. And everybody was really excited about this book. ‘We have to ask more God questions and less me questions.' In the Perkins faculty where I was teaching at the time was really excited, and I said ‘What if your God questions are really your concealed me questions?' Is that possible, right, that you talk about God, and you're really talking about yourself.” -Joerg Rieger [13:41] “Power is not a dirty word, but it's a different sort of power. If you want to use modern language, you could say it's more democratic. It's more shared. It's something that brings people together. Something that builds relationships.
