In the heart of Albuquerque, Pastor Greg Griego often stood before the fire department and the local jail, sharing his powerful testimony of redemption. Once entangled in the world of gangs in California, he had found a new path through faith, a transformation that resonated with those who listened. He was well-known and well-liked in the community.  Greg Griego. Once a soldier in the 82nd Airborne Division, Greg had led a life marred by drugs and gangs. However, during a stint in jail in California in the early 1990s, he experienced a profound transformation, finding faith and embracing Christianity. This pivotal change set him on a path of redemption, ultimately leading him to serve others. While his wife, Sarah, dedicated herself to homeschooling their ten children in their modest home in the semi-rural South Valley. Greg had five children before he met his wife, Sarah, with whom he had five more. Greg turned their backyard barn into a sanctuary for released prisoners. Most would agree that Greg and Sarah were strict parents. They prohibited their children from playing violent video games and meticulously monitored their television choices. It is  January 8, 1981, and we going to Lassen County, California, where we encounter 21-year-old Kevin Thorpe. After completing high school, Kevin enlisted in the Navy, serving for three years before returning to his hometown of Ridgecrest, California. Upon his return, he met a young woman named Laura Craig at a social gathering. Laura, a mother to a young child, captivated Kevin, who was undeterred by her circumstances; his affection for her was profound. Their relationship developed quickly and intensely—an embodiment of the adage, “When you know, you know.”Eager for a fresh start, Laura and Kevin packed their belongings into Kevin's white Ford Elite, towing a utility trailer, and left Ridgecrest for Oregon, where they hoped to be closer to Kevin's brother. They made the bittersweet decision to leave their baby, Treena, with Laura's mother until they settled in. As they took the scenic backroads north on Highway 395, a sudden jolt signaled trouble: the trailer had a flat tire. They decided to press on to Madeline, where they encountered a seemingly helpful man who offered assistance and invited Laura to warm up inside with his wife. Just as they began to fix the tire, three other men arrived, discussing plans to meet women in Oregon. Today we are headed to Laurelwood, Oregon where we meet a young woman named Margo Compton.  Margo grew up in Solano County, California. She was a bright child who made good grades and had good friends.  Things started to change for Margo. Margo ended up getting married in August of 1969 to Doug  Compton at just 16 years old. At first, all seemed good in their marriage. Things changed when Doug met new friends from the Nomads motorcycle club, an offshoot of the Hell's Angeles. When Margo got pregnant, the violence began. This led to them both doing drugs and it was rumored that Doug often beat Margo. Doug started hanging out increasingly with the bikers and less at home. In July 1977, Margo testified in a California criminal case against a high-ranking member of the Hell's Angels. Skincare junkies have been buzzing about K-Beauty and J-Beauty for a while now, but how familiar are you with I-Beauty? In this episode, Victoria and Dominique welcome Rooshy Roy, the founder and CEO of skincare brand Aavrani, to the podcast. Rooshy shares how her Indian heritage helped shape her skincare line, which is based on the formulations of her Grandmother and Mother from Kolkata. The Aavrani “ritual” currently features four products made from all-natural, clean ingredients like turmeric, tea tree oil, neem, sweet almond oil, and rosehip seed. The 4-step ritual includes a cleanser that doubles as a mask, a restoring serum, a moisturizer and an eye cream. Founded in Japan in 1872, Shiseido has cultivated a reputation for innovation in beauty, celebrating the synergy between art and science. It was that very reputation that drew now Global Artistic Director, James Boehmer, to the brand.Having studied fine art and costume design prior to becoming a makeup artist, James has long worked best within that very intersection of art and science. Having spent close to 20 years at NARS under the close mentorship of Francois Nars himself, the bulk of which he spent as the brand’s Global Artistic Director, James’ personal approach to beauty encompasses the arts of performance, collaboration and construction. In 2016 James became the Global Artistic Director for Shiseido Makeup, tasked with visiting the archives to redevelop and, in turn, relaunch, the then 144 year old brand’s entire colour cosmetics collection. James’ role sees him direct Shiseido’s innovations across colour and texture to tell the brand’s story- one that celebrates the marriage of form and function in all parts of Japanese culture.More recently, Shiseido have announced the appointment of Hunter Schafer as the brand’s Global Makeup Ambassador, cementing their status as pioneers of not only product, but of progression and inclusivity in beauty. “Beauty should be democratic, and it should be for everybody,” James tells me in this episode. Both Korean and Japanese beauty trends are entering the mainstream. However, there are some contrasts between the two products. As K-Beauty products tend to have high functionality, they tend to take a shorter time from development to launch than J-Beauty products. On the other hand, J-Beauty products have a wide, regional coverage and significant market presence, while K-Beauty products are relatively narrow in both regions and categories.   

Today's episode focuses on the "J-beauty vs. K-beauty" debate, which seems to be heating up in 2018. I will discuss why painting Korean beauty as a somehow inferior, less mature type of skin care when compared to the "sophisticated" and "pure" skin care that Japan has to offer is beyond problematic!
