Het is opnieuw zover. Vanaf deze week worden de winnaars bekendgemaakt van de Nobelprijzen, de meest prestigieuze prijs op aarde. In de categorie Geneeskunde zijn twee immunologen de gelukkige winnaars: de Amerikaan James P. Allison en de Japanner Tasuku Honjo. Beiden staan aan de basis van de immunotherapie of immuuntherapie, een veel belovende therapie waarbij het immuunsysteem wordt aangepast om kanker beter te bestrijden. Immuuntherapie is vaak nog geen vervanger van meer klassiekere behandelmethodes zoals bestraling, chemotherapie en medicijnen. Maar het biedt onderzoekers de kans om sommige kankers op een extra efficiënte manier terug te dringen. Volgens Medisch oncoloog Marleen Kok van het Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Instituut (NKI) bezoeken ongeveer dagelijks zestig mensen het instituut om een of andere vorm van immuuntherapie te krijgen. Zelf zoekt Kok naar betere manieren om ons immuunsysteem tegen borstkanker in te zetten (want dat lukt nog niet zo goed). Ze vertelt aan ons wat we nu al aan immuuntherapie te danken hebben en waar nog ruimte voor verbetering is.
