Kill By Kill returns once again to sink Jason Lives to the bottom of Lake Forest Green, and we've brought along podcaster Wendy Mays (Pet Cinematary) to fit a chain around its neck. Along the way, we explore the eccentric, academic reading habits of tween campers, debate whether Jason would ever “pop a hamster into his mouth like a grape,” grapple with tight shots of denim crotches, and appreciate this particular Jason's fine badonkadonk. Needless to say, things get weird. Plus, we pick apart the various kinds of semi-liquids that leak from a freshly crushed skull right before tapping into a new edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure. It's Tuesday... what a wonderful day for a resurrection. That's right, in this redux episode, Gena and Patrick are raising the dead once again, but this time with special guest, TV and marketing bigwig Chris Donovan. Along the way, we talk about Pavlov's orgasm, the difficulty of escape while wearing bear footie slippers, the moment Jason Lives goes full Star Trek, and "the most bouncy sex" in the entire Friday the 13th canon. Plus, we connect the "art" of Rob Liefeld to Jason Voorhees and have a rebellious game of "Choose Your Own Death-venture" as we cut through a swath of counselors on our way to the Part 6 finale. People have a very strange idea of entertainment... and we qualify! That's right, we're deep in the heart of Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives, and we're thrilled to bring on comedian Adam Peacock (seen on Netflix's I Think You Should Leave and the host of the My Neighbors Are Dead podcast) to talk about three minor characters with major issues. In this episode, we consider racist trail marker lesson plans, decide what to name our favorite alcoholic beverages, announce Jason Voorhees as the latest Harlem Globetrotter, and attempt to unpack two of the most insane costuming choices ever presented on film. Plus, we make terrible day camp plans for “Jeremy” and play a superb round of Choose Your Own Deathventure. Also, there's a weird echo that floats around the audio at points. Happy 40th Anniversary to Jason Voorhees! A little while ago, I decided to re-release older episodes that are uncut. Back when I first started podcasting, having sharp, finely trimmed episodes were all the rage. Since nothing is recorded that way, it needs to be edited. Now, everyone wants to hear everything about the interview, wrinkles and all. So, here are classic episodes of Classic American Movies: Uncut. Can you believe it's been four decades since “Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives” slashed its way into our hearts? When I first kicked off the podcast during the pandemic, I was interviewing legends left and right, but landing writer/director Tom McLoughlin was a total “pinch-me” moment! I'll admit, my interview skills were a bit rough around the edges back then, but Tom was an absolute pro and on his A-game. It was such a treat to dive deep into the history and behind-the-scenes magic of this slasher classic.Ready for the ultimate fan experience? The Lost Boys, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Fright Night, The Village, and The Collector headline this episode of This Week in Horror History, covering July 27 through August 2. Summer horror gets vampiric, supernatural, folklore-soaked, and dangerously familiar as we revisit an iconic 1980s vampire movie, the resurrection of Jason Voorhees, M. Night Shyamalan's isolated village nightmare, a brutal home-invasion trap thriller, and a modern Métis horror novel about a loved one who returns profoundly wrong. Inside this episode:July 28, 2020 — Empire of Wild receives its U.S. publicationCherie Dimaline's supernatural horror novel follows Joan, a woman searching for her missing husband. When she discovers a charismatic preacher who looks and sounds almost exactly like him—but insists he is someone else—her search leads toward Métis folklore, the rogarou, stolen identity, grief, and an ancient hunger wearing a familiar face. July 30, 2004 — The Village releases in the United StatesM. Night Shyamalan transforms an isolated community surrounded by forbidden woods into a haunting story about fear, control, ritual, and the dangerous power of a carefully protected lie. The villagers have been taught that creatures wait beyond the boundary, certain colors must never be worn, and safety depends upon everyone obeying the same rules. July 31, 1987 — The Lost Boys releases in the United StatesJoel Schumacher gives vampire horror leather jackets, motorcycles, beach fog, neon boardwalks, and unforgettable 1980s style. Beneath the lights and nightlife of Santa Carla, a gang of young vampires offers danger, immortality, and the seductive promise of never having to grow up. August 1, 1986 — Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives releasesTommy Jarvis accidentally resurrects Jason Voorhees with a bolt of lightning, transforming the Crystal Lake killer into a fully supernatural slasher icon. Faster, funnier, and more self-aware than many earlier entries, Jason Lives combines gothic cemetery imagery, summer-camp terror, black comedy, and one of the franchise's most memorable versions of Jason.Deep-Cut Spotlight — The Collector A desperate thief breaks into a wealthy family's home and discovers that a masked killer has already transformed the property into an elaborate maze of wires, traps, locked rooms, and carefully arranged suffering. The Collector captures the brutal energy of late-2000s horror, combining home-invasion suspense, post-Saw trap horror, survival-thriller momentum, and the terrifying idea that every possible escape route has already been anticipated by someone waiting inside.Horror Birthdays This Week: David Warner, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, and Wes Craven enter the birthday roll, bringing connections to The Omen, Waxwork, Predator, The Terminator, Aliens, Planet Terror, The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Scream.Weekly Recommendation — Fright Night A teenage horror fan becomes convinced that his charming new neighbor is a vampire—but nobody believes him. Desperate for help, Charley Brewster turns to Peter Vincent, a washed-up television horror host who has spent his career pretending to battle monsters. Funny, stylish, spooky, and filled with practical-effects vampire horror, Fright Night remains one of the great horror-comedies of the 1980s. It combines the vampire-next-door premise with suburban paranoia, late-night horror television, supernatural action, and the realization that imaginary courage may suddenly need to become real. From Empire of Wild and The Village to The Lost Boys, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, The Collector, and Fright Night, this week in horror history proves that the most dangerous monsters do not always remain hidden. Sometimes they wear the face of someone you love, live inside your community, move into the house next door, or rise from the grave when lightning strikes.

He's back! The man behind the mask! Friday the 13th is keeping us busy this year with two in two months and another on the way. This time we're taking a look at 1986's Jason Lives, the movie that canned the original plan to have Tommy Jarvis take up the machete and establishes Jason Voorhees as a lumbering, unstoppable killing machine from beyond the grave! In this movie Tommy Jarvis skips the mental hospital he's been confined at to return to Crystal Lake, since renamed to Forest Green in order to shake its horrible reputation. His mission: dig up the body of Jason Voorhees, who has haunted him since he was a little kid, and make sure that he's dead. But when Tommy's obsession overlaps with an electrical storm, a bolt of lightning strikes the body of Jason and brings him back from the grave once again to kill everyone in sight. Now it's up to Tommy to face his fears and put Jason back in the ground for good. When A New Beginning hit theaters it did characteristically well in box office but faced a significant problem with fans: They hated the new direction. They came for Jason and they left with Tommy and everyone hated it. So Frank Mancuso Jr., now a little preoccupied with his War of the Worlds and Friday the 13th TV shows, left the entire project in the hands of writer and director Tom McLoughlin with one clear directive: Do whatever you want but bring back Jason. It's not a particularly good movie, but as Matt points out, it might be the best F13 sequel we got post-JASON LIVES, but that's a pretty low bar to begin with. The Friday the 13th movie series is one of the top slasher movie franchises of the 1980s and beyond, so this week the Junkies take a look at Jason Voorhees, the unkillable movie monster with the staggeringly high body count who has been to camp, to hell, to outer space and has battled Freddy Krueger. The Junkies look at all 12 (not 13?) movies in the series so far, compare Jason to the other unstoppable slashers who made it big in the 1980s, Halloween's Michael Myers and Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy, and figure out which of the three they could fend off if they ever found themselves having to choose one. Then the Junkies look to the future with Jason, and the newly-formed Jason Universe that could bring us that elusive 13th movie in the series - and more. Welcome back, campers! Grab your machetes, hide your chocolate bars, and definitely don't wander off alone into the woods, because in this week's episode we're diving headfirst into one of the weirdest and most controversial entries in the Friday the 13th franchise: Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning. That's right—Jason Voorhees is dead (allegedly), but that doesn't mean the body count is slowing down. In fact, the only thing multiplying faster than the kills in this movie is the confusion over who's actually doing the killing. Spoiler: it's not who you think… and also not who you want it to be.This episode, we're strapping on our camp counselor whistles and taking you on a tour through the asylum of Tommy Jarvis's post-trauma psyche. Poor Tommy just wanted a little peace and quiet, but instead he gets a halfway house full of characters who feel like they wandered in from completely different movies: there's the leather-clad greasers who look like they took a wrong turn out of Grease 2, the random angry redneck mom screaming at her son to shovel chicken slop, and of course the infamous chocolate-bar-swinging Joey who manages to meet one of the most absurdly brutal fates in horror history. We break it all down—every bizarre subplot, every head-scratching creative choice, and every death scene that makes you go, “Wait, why did that just happen?”But don't worry, we're not just roasting this movie (though it deserves a good roasting). We're also giving it its due credit: the kills are plentiful, the sleaze is cranked up to eleven, and there's a weird charm in its chaotic energy. From garden shears to road flares, Part V is basically a slasher smorgasbord where no weapon is off-limits. We even get one of the most outrageous outhouse scenes in horror history—seriously, has there ever been a scarier place to sing along to yourself while doing your business? Probably not.And then, of course, there's the big reveal: the “mystery killer.” Was anyone buying it? Did anyone walk out of the theater thinking, “Wow, what a satisfying twist!” Or was it more like, “Wait, who the hell was that guy again?” We'll talk about the Scooby-Doo-level unmasking, why fans at the time were furious, and whether or not Friday the 13th really needed a “new beginning” that turned out to be more like a weird detour. Throughout the episode, we sprinkle in some laughs, some chills, and some genuine appreciation for this much-maligned entry. Because here's the thing: while A New Beginning might not have Jason in it (unless you count dream sequences and hallucinations), it's still a fascinating time capsule of mid-80s slasher excess. The film is sleazy, cheesy, over-the-top, and occasionally so bad it circles back around to being good. And really, isn't that what we love about horror in the first place? So tune in as we unpack the madness. We'll share our favorite kills, our least favorite characters (sorry, Joey), and even debate whether this movie would have been better if Jason had been resurrected in true supernatural fashion. We'll also touch on how Part V paved the way for the next chapter (Jason Lives), where the franchise finally embraced its undead campfire legend status. In the end, A New Beginning may not be the most beloved Friday installment, but it's definitely one of the most unforgettable—and we had a blast hacking our way through it.So grab your sleeping bag, keep your eyes peeled for ambulance drivers with suspicious motives, and join us around the campfire (or maybe just the nearest porta-potty) as we relive the madness of Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning. Remember: in the woods, no one can hear you scream… but they can definitely hear you singing in the outhouse.

We discuss the long-form content that often turns into non sequiturs, followed by the latest home video headlines, including Netflix's upcoming animated series In Case of Emergency set in a British hospital and the surprising renewal of Billy the Kid for its third and final season. Moving on to our main feature, we explore Jason Lives (Friday the 13th Part 6), where Tommy Jarvis unwittingly resurrects Jason Voorhees while trying to cremate his remains. With recurring themes and characters, we touch on the film's influence, notable trivia, and why this installment stands out in the franchise. Highlights include the director's clever nods to other horror films and the unique kills that make you actually care about the characters. Additionally, we react to They Live, a John Carpenter classic, discussing its themes of artificial consciousness and subliminal messaging in the context of our current media landscape.
