Note to our listeners: This episode was recorded back in December 2024, before David Lynch's passing in January. RIP David Lynch, maybe one day the GBGBs can honor your work by reviewing some of your other buck-wild amazing films.    This week the GBGBs review DUNE (the version from 1984). The first DUNE, before the pretty solid 2000 made-for-TV DUNE, before the excellent Denis Villeneuve DUNES, and before the ill-advised HBO series DUNE: Prophecy. This movie introduced mainstream audiences to Kyle Maclachlan and Patrick Stewart and had to break a lot of ground quickly for the sci-fi epic genre. In addition to sandworms, this movie had the distinct advantage of including inner-monologues, heart-plugs, cat milking machines, rat capri-suns, and a soundtrack by Toto. The GBGBs discuss if this movie was too harshly judged in its time and if it's worth the journey for modern DUNE fans.     Thanks for stopping by!

The GBGBs are BACK with a review of the LATEST M. Night Shyamalan flick, TRAP. Josh Hartnett stars as just your everyday dad who's secretly a serial killer. All he wants to do is take his daughter to a concert to see her favorite pop star, Lady Raven (played by Saleka Night). Hijinks ensue when it turns out the concert is doubling as a giant sting operation to catch Josh Hartnett. This movie is a thrilling cat and mouse game that asks the age old question: can't we all just relax and have a good time watching Shyamalan's silly movies? Thanks for stopping by!

After missing this movie when it came out, we heard it went through a bit of a cultural renaissance the past few years so we thought we should give it a watch and see for ourselves.  Megan Fox stars as Jennifer Check, a high school student who becomes possessed by a demon and begins hunting the local boys at her school. It is up to her best friend Needy, played by Amanda Seyfried, to put a stop to the bloodshed and save her town!    Thanks for stopping by!

But, *record scratch* it turns out the vampires also want to capture BLADE to use his special half-vampire blood for a ritual to awaken their ancient vampire god and eradicate humans? You guys know that Glen Powell movie called Twisters? Well this is basically like a prequel where you find out why the Tornado is so mad.  This movie has everything: Twisters (as advertised), ROMANCE, flying cows (or maybe just the same one over and over), and an original song by Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen.    Also discussed: Ryan's brave close encounter with a tornado, how to stop a tornado, and whether or not Bill Paxton's character's pants should have blown off at the end.   Thanks for stopping by!

WE'RE BACK. Sort of..... Jace was out of town so Ryan and Denali decided to "swing away" into a review of SIGNS (2002). We believe this decision will bring peace and unity to 2/3rds of the GBGBs brand as this movie brings aliens for Ryan and M Night Shyamalan for Denali. This was the movie that brought crop circles back into the monoculture while scarring an entire generation of children forever with a simple camcorder birthday party scene.  Ryan and Denali also get into it re UFOs, the mindset of the Signs aliens, and the role of earnest-ness in storytelling.    Thanks for stopping by!

Everyone has undoubtedly seen this movie so no need for a synopsis, but just in case, Ryan Gosling plays a tatted-up badboy dirt bike jumper who robs banks. Then Bradley Cooper comes in and is like, "hey! Stop!! I wanna be the DA!" and then they both have kids and it becomes another movie entirely. Starting with Drive, our friend stars in 3 films in a single year, then goes onto star in a major film every year afterwards.  But how does the Gos-man measure up in the Rom-Com space? Can he bring his affable comedic chops in a movie where he's largely a proto-manosphere creep? The guy sure looks great in a suit though.... In true Gosling-movie fashion, the film takes place in LA and gives us a nostalgic trip through a bygone era. But this time, Gosling plays a down on his luck private eye who teams up with toughguy Russell Crowe to solve a mystery in 1970s LA. There's goofs, there's gaffes, and there's lotsa laughs. Well it's about a ragtag team of mavericks who are trying to take down a mob boss in 1940s Los Angeles! It was also critically panned and was a box office flop. Not all of Gosling's movies are winners, but with a hit rate like that guy, we had to go for a stinker this week.    Ryan (our Ryan) also guides us through the arcane art of "remote viewing" a technique used by the CIA to locate UFOs buried under the Denver Airport *citation needed*.   Thanks for stopping by!

Things take a turn when Lars begins a romantic relationship with an anatomically correct sex doll named Bianca. Lars's community then decides to go along with his delusion in hopes that he will find the connections that he needs.    This movie was an unexpectedly emotional ride for the GBGBs. No car chases, no song and dance numbers, just some good ole fashion acting in this here film. What? Were you expecting some kind of bit in this description? We don't have to do those every time you know. Sometimes we can just describe the movie we liked okay? Give us a break, and you know what? Everything is fine and dandy until *record scratch* Gosling realizes he just might be the long lost child of a replicant mother, placing him at the center of a paradigm shift between humans and replicants. Who and what decides personhood? Can machines have a soul? Does it matter??   Also the GBGBs embark on another ill-advised exploration of audio-only improv. This movie was a first-watch for the 4 of them, so it was a delightfully wild trip. Did this film deserve its critical and commercial panning? Or was it a misunderstood masterpiece far ahead of its time, too bold and true in its vision that the shallow, ungrateful masses of 2008 couldn't possibly fathom a reboot that wasn't "gritty" or "tWiSteD" with F-words and dark humor? Sorry, I have been told to remain neutral for the remainder of this description.    Also discussed: the 2008 Teen Choice Awards and use of racing as an allegory for a characters journey (TM)   *Bad Audio Warning* Denali had some issues with his recording where everything sounded like it was blown out. This dude was coming hot out of the gate in 2000 with this unique twist on the horror genre. Final Destination spawned a long line of sequels and induced a lifelong fear of log trucks for an entire generation.    In addition to reviewing the movie, the boys also brainstorm how they could make airplanes better and revel in an effective deployment of our boy Seann.    Thanks for stopping by!

Were there some we wish we could re-review? The boys also brainstorm which apocalypse would win in a fight and take turns doing impressions of the disasters in each movie.    Then FINALLY, the GBGBs consult the Wheel of Chaos (TM) to decide on the fate of next season. Will Denali at last get his Fast and Furious season? Will the boys embark on a marathon of medieval dragon movies? Will an unsung hero finally get his due attention as a GBGBs season? Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence star as modest astronomers who discover a giant comet on a collision course for Earth. They are then forced to pit themselves against the uninterested politicians and media pundits as they attempt to convince the world's leaders to take action. If you think this may sound like an allegory for something, congratulations M. Benoit Blanc, you've cracked this case wide open!   The boys also brainstorm alternative tactics for dodging a comet and write a pop-punk ode to Timothee Chalamet set to Weezer's Pork and Beans.  Okay they only do one of those things but you're gonna have to listen to find out which.   Thanks for stopping by!

Well folks, we may be stretching the limit of our Apocalypse season theme but we watched the crown jewel of the TNG run: Star Trek First Contact. If you're not a Star Trek fan, don't worry, a few of our hosts are going into this movie cold so they'll be right there with you. This movie has it all, Borg, time travel, Borg Cubes, Moby Dick references, Borg Spheres, Picard speeches, a Borg Queen, Zephyr Cocrane, and a Borg Earth. Is this a bona fide Apocalypse movie? Who knows. Does this movie totally rule? At least one of us thinks so....   Thanks for stopping by!

Well folks, we did it. We reviewed the thrilling conclusion to Neon Genesis Evangelion without watching the actual show. The 3 of us did hardly any research beforehand and just tried to dive in and analyze it as a standalone movie. Was this a good idea? Obviously not. Was it enjoyable? Sorta. Was this the dumbest thing we have ever done on this podcast? Maybe.    For the uninitiated, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a moody 90s anime that serves as a deconstruction of the "Mecha Anime" genre. If you don't know what that means, that's okay because we barely did either. This movie is a redo of the original anime ending which had been panned by fans and critics alike. This movie is regarded as the "proper" ending for the beloved series and is thought of as one of the best conclusions for an anime narrative arc. Too bad we had no idea.    Thanks for stopping by!

Things get pretty twisted from there as the place known as "Area X" wreaks havoc on the minds and biology of the team. There's also a wicked lamprey alligator, a skeleton bear, and a liquid metal terminator clone so there's something for everybody!    Thanks for stopping by!
