Financial markets cannot get a break from headlines. The Trump Administration is rolling out – and in some cases rolling back – trade tariffs at a frenzied pace. Negotiations over peace in Ukraine are only just beginning, with the shape of a resolution anyone’s guess. Fiscal policy is also front and center for bonds, with curbing deficits looking increasingly difficult as defense spending needs and the desire for growth-based policies rise. Ennui prevails as markets seem unwilling or unable to price for higher risk premia.

Leaves are falling, the nights are getting longer, and the abandoned Chuck E. Cheese on the other side of our parking lot has temporarily become a Spirit Halloween store. It's officially Halloween season, and this week I have four horror films to recommend that I watch every year to get me into the Halloween spirit. First on my list is Young Frankenstein, Mel Brooks' classic Frankenstein sequel/parody released in 1974. Not all of Brooks' films have aged well, but Young Frankenstein still stands up as a classic comedy. The film stars Gene Wilder as Dr. Frankenstein's grandson, who travels to Transylvania to prove to the world his grandfather was not insane. After arriving he discovers his grandfather's notes and equipment and is ultimately able to reanimate a corpse… with mixed results. Wilder is joined on screen by Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Kenneth Mars, and Gene Hackman, and Peter Boyle as the monster. Even though I seem to catch bits and pieces (no pun intended) of this on cable throughout the year, I put it on the list because it's best enjoyed all the way through from start to finish. If you remove this one from the shelv but change your mind, be sure to put it, and the candle, BACK.Second on my list is 1985's Silver Bullet, based on a Stephen King novella. In Silver Bullet, a small town in Maine (it's always a small town in Maine…) is under attack by a murderer that turns out to be a werewolf. After a young boy named Marty manages to wound the werewolf, he and his sister set out to determine the werewolf's identity. But when the moon is full, the hunters quickly become the hunted. Starring Corey Haim and Gary Busey, Silver Bullet is a classic that gets me into the Halloween spirit every year.Next on my list is John Carpenter's The Thing, released in 1982. I have long considered this film along with a few others like Jaws and Back to the Future to be essentially flawless films. I've watched The Thing a dozen times and there's not a thing I would change. It's the perfect combination of traditional scares and psychological terror. When researchers discover an alien life form that not only consumes people but can physically imitate them as well, a group of researchers quickly discover who among them they can trust — no one. Starring Kurt Russell and featuring a cast of familiar faces, The Thing is the perfect way to instill fear and paranoia before bedtime. The last film on my list is 1985's Fright Night, a film about a teenage boy who believes his next door neighbor may actually be a vampire responsible for the uptick in murders reported on the news. When Charley's family, friends, and even the police fail to believe him, there's only one person he can turn to: Peter Vincent, host of the late night horror-themed television show, Fright Night. The bad news for Charley is that by the time he discovers the truth about his neighbor, his neighbor is on to him. Fright Night is classic 80s horror — it's a little scary, a little silly, and a whole lot of fun. It's worth a watch if you haven't seen it recently.I hope you are as excited about Halloween as we are here at the Video Store Podcast. Help yourself to a complimentary pair of plastic vampire teeth and fake blood capsules (careful — they'll stain clothing) and take all the candy corn you want (we can never get rid of that stuff). I hope at least one of this week's movies gets you into the Halloween spirit. Let us know your favorite “must watch” films that get you into the Halloween spirit! This is a public episode. Max, Liz, and Host Spencer are stepping in for Peter Vincent (take the night off David Tennant and Roddy McDowall) to discuss these horror comedies and what makes them so similar and so different.
The volatility of the last two weeks can be ascribed to many events and raises more questions than answers. Was it a clear-out of crowded positions in illiquid summer markets or the early stage of a systemic financial event? Is the US economy's soft landing still on track? Will recent moves in equities, rates and FX now reverse or form new trends? Peter Vincent, our head trading in London, joins the podcast to try and answer those questions.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hey, there, horror hounds and fright fans. Tom Holland here, ready to take you on a journey back to where it all began - Act I of Fright Night 40TH Year Cast Reunion TABLE READ You've seen this before, but trust me, you haven't experienced it like this. With Mark Hamill stepping into Roddy McDowall's shoes as Peter Vincent, and the electric Rosario Dawson joining Christopher Sarandon and our beloved original cast, we're breathing new life into this classic tale of suburban terror. And in this podcast - you're right there with me, in the room LIVE with Chris, Bill, Mark, Rosario and the whole Fright Night family. They delivered a performance so damn good, it was almost as frightening as the vampires themselves. In Act I, we set the stage. We introduce you to Charley Brewster, your average American teenager with an above-average problem - his next-door neighbor might just be a bloodsucking fiend. It's a delicate balance, between the mundane and the monstrous. We start with the ordinary - high school, homework, hormone-driven makeout sessions - and slowly, insidiously, let the extraordinary creep in. It plays on our deepest fears. Not just of vampires, but of not being believed, of being alone in the face of unspeakable evil. It's Stephen King's Loser's Club meets Rear Window, with a dash of hormonal teenage angst thrown in for good measure. As you listen, pay attention to the little details - the way the tension builds, the way disbelief slowly gives way to dawning horror. Listen for the chemistry between our cast, both old and new. It's like lightning in a bottle, folks, and we've managed to capture it again after all these years, just for your ears; electrifying your mind with a masterful soundtrack designed just for you, just for this story! We share laughter, stories, and outtakes - it's like your ear is pressed to the studio door, eavesdropping on icons reanimating an iconic story - my iconic story, at that. As Stephen King might say, we're not just telling a story, we're opening a vein and letting it bleed all over the microphone. So come on in, the bite's fine. Buckle up, turn out the lights, grab your earbuds because when that sun goes down and Jerry Dandrige bares his fangs, you're in for one hell of a ride. Welcome back to Fright Night, for real! Outside of the Magnificent 7 tech stocks, profit warnings and unsettling forward guidance through Q1 earnings season have sparked a re-assessment of demand resilience. Commentary from consumer-oriented firms about waning pricing power and tighter margins looks troubling. Marija Veitmane, our head of equity strategy, returns with her take on a bifurcated earnings environment, where tech still trumps all but the outlook for consumer stocks, banks and sector rotation strategies is murkier. Peter Vincent, head of Trading in EMEA, is also back, with his macro spin on consumer and labor market trends, and where he sees rate markets and currencies in the coming months.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The calm in currency markets since the late summer has been one of the stranger puzzles of the last year. Its not as though FX markets have nothing to think about - questions over both risky and riskless asset valuation have dominated thinking for the last three months. And yet volatility in most markets, but particularly in FX, is dropping like a stone and reaching multi-year lows. This week, Tim brings back Michael Metcalfe, our Global Head of Macro Strategy, and Peter Vincent, head of Trading in EMEA, to discuss why it has been so calm and what might disrupt things in the New Year.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Happy Halloween, everybody! On this spooky edition of Not A Bomb, the “Breaking Brad” crew discusses the sequel to one of the greatest horror films of all time, Fright Night Part 2. Picking up 3 years after the events of the first film, Fright Night Part 2 finds Charley Brewster and vampire hunter Peter Vincent battling a brand new cadre of sexy vampires. Fright Night Part 2 was given less of a budget than the original film and struggled to get theatrical distribution. The critics were also harsh on the sequel and the vampire flick didn't really find an audience until it was released on VHS. Oh…and a highly publicized murder of a studio executive might have played a part in this films rough distribution cycle. Yeah, this movie had some dark things happening behind the scenes. Does Fright Night Part 2 live up to the original or has this horror franchise lost its bite? Spoiler alert: someone called this thing a bomb! You won't be able to guess who!Fright Night: Part 2 is directed by Tommy Lee Wallace and stars Roddy McDowall, WIlliam Ragsdale, Traci Lind, and Julie Carmen. Friday, 2 September 2022 “He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.” Acts 10:6 Cornelius is still receiving instruction from the messenger from God. He was just told to send men to Joppa and to find Simon whose name is Peter. It now continues with, “He is lodging with Simon, a tanner.” This gives the reason for specifying “Simon whose name is Peter.” Normally, one would go to a residence looking for the occupier of that residence. In this case, Simon the tanner opened his house to Simon Peter. Without identifying which Simon was to go, they both may have had to make the journey, just to be sure. Ananias was not an apostle, and yet, he was summoned to go to Straight Street and place his hands on Paul. Without this explicit instruction, they may have thought the Lord purposefully wanted a tanner to meet with a Gentile because he was used to interacting with Gentiles, or whatever. As noted in the commentary on Acts 9:43, being a tanner was not necessarily something that caused defilement. It was a part of the normal lives of people within the society. Even if some Jews found it an unclean lifestyle, that was their problem, but it was not necessarily an issue with the law. In the modern world, people may look down on garbagemen, but that doesn't mean a thing about the person. The position may be filled by the greatest guy in town. And so, this cannot be used as an indication that “the Jewish law was losing its hold on Peter” (Vincent's Word Studies). Rather, it meant that Peter was willing to stay with a person who was looked down upon by others and who may have stank to high heaven. Next, it says, “whose house is by the sea.” This would easily identify where to go, and which tanner was being referred to if there was more than one in town. Being by the sea was a convenient place for tanning as noted in the earlier commentary referenced above. Lastly, it says, “He will tell you what you must do.” These words are left out of various texts. Of this omission, Cambridge says – “These words are not in the oldest MSS. In Peter's own account of the visit to Cornelius (Acts 11:14) we have ‘who shall tell thee words whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved;' and this is one of the numerous instances found in some later texts of the Acts where an attempt has been made to form a complete narrative in the earlier chapters by gathering together and adapting statements which appear in their proper place in later chapters.” Cambridge immediately assumes that “older is better,” and that the omission demonstrates that this was an insert to reconcile the two accounts. However, it could just as easily be that the omission was an error in the earlier text and that text was then rejected because of it. Unless there is definite proof of one or the error, the addition of a footnote in the Bible translation is a useful tool to let the reader know the disparity between the various texts. Either way, no information is lost because Chapter 11 includes it. So, it was either stated twice or it was stated only once, but it was – in fact – stated. Life application: Be sure to read the footnotes if your Bible includes them. And when you buy a new Bible, look for one that includes footnotes. There are many important points that are noted in them that will help the true student of the Bible to determine what is going on and to then help them think those things through clearly. When you come to a footnote you are not fully understanding, then you can read up on that passage in longer commentaries. Eventually, you will usually find a suitable resolution to the issue you are trying to resolve. Heavenly Father, may we be faithful and careful stewards of Your word, always thinking it through, contemplating it, and meditating upon it. It is too precious to simply ignore. It is light, and it conveys life. May we treat it with the highest care and respect all our days. Amen.
In the early 50's Peter Vincent saw a car that changed his life forever. He was a 6th grader standing on the corner for junior traffic control when a lowered, drop top Merc pulled up with frenched headlights, nosed and decked with a smooth bumper and no grill. Needless to say, it made an impression. He has been hooked on cars ever since, and his passion stayed with him as he bounced from mechanical engineering to architecture and finally landed in his true passion, photography. Like that Merc, the act of creation in photography grabbed Peter like nothing else and never let go. Peter learned photography from workshops with Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, taking in their formalism and methodical zone system of visualizing, measuring and capturing images. As he honed his craft, he turned his camera to cars. Much like architecture and landscape photography, cars provided subjects with lines and shapes that appealed to his passion for disciplined image making. Bonneville provided the perfect setting to capture hot rods in their purest form, built by like-minded car enthusiasts with their own spin on disciplined craftsmanship. Since those first images, Peter has published five books of photography and made a reputation for himself as the premier hot rod photographer. We talk with Peter about his extensive experience in photography, his own cars and getting to know early hot rod legends like Keith Cornell and Ken Schmidt of the Rolling Bones hot rod shop. This episode is a follow-up to my conversation a few weeks ago with Dr. Peter Vincent Pry about our concerns that our Administration's responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine could lead to nuclear war. Today, we consider also an alternate possibility that Vladimir Putin is playing a much deeper game than most in the West have imagined. As Executive Director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, former Chief of Staff of the Congressional EMP Commission and Director of the US Nuclear Strategy Forum, Dr Pry brings a vast and imaginative knowledge of history and of modern warfare. “Most analysts, including myself, thought that the relevant scenario was Crimea and that the Russians would go for a quick, almost bloodless, victory,” speculates Peter, “but there is another Russian way of war that was right under our noses. And that is a long protracted war … it's almost like they're deliberately doing everything they can to try to provoke the West to intervene, to jump into the war.” There are a lot of strange things in the way the Russians have conducted the Ukraine War that have violated most all of the fundamental elements of their military doctrine. They didn't go for tactical and strategic surprise. They attacked openly in the face of the West. They haven't cyber attacked although the Russians have demonstrated the ability to isolate their cyber attacks to Ukraine itself. They haven't committed some of their best conventional forces. Their best and most modern tanks haven't been committed to Ukraine. Of their 20,000 tanks they're using mostly older models and only a small fraction of those. “The Russian air force has almost been absent without leave, hasn't been deployed in its best capabilities,” explains Peter, “and has played a very limited role.” Why? We need to consider the possibility that this whole thing right from the beginning might not be just about Ukraine. “It might be aimed at creating a long period of chaos in the center of Europe,” reasons Peter, “that it's going to put such stress on its economies and the NATO Alliance that the NATO Alliance will come apart at the seams.” Putin isn't returning phone calls from the White House and Russian general staffs are not talking to our Pentagon. “They've basically stopped communicating with us,” says Peter. “That isn't the action of a country that's badly losing a war and is desperately seeking an exit.” We should be cautious about what we believe of what we're being told in Ukraine and about the performance of the Russian army. We're told Russia is on the ropes, that it looks like it could lose the Ukraine War, Putin could fall from power and that he and the elites who support him and his family could be executed. But consider this: Putin has postured Russia's nuclear arsenal in such a way that they can launch most of their forces in just a few minutes without telegraphing any messages to us. This a time for America to stop saber rattling and develop a sober considered strategy to defuse the Ukraine tinderbox. Dr Peter Vincent Pry outlines some sensible and constructive strategies to wind down the hostilities, up to and including hitting the reset button with Russia, reminding us that our real object in our new Cold War is China. There's a lot to learn from this conversation. Please listen in.
This is a very upsetting episode. I'm joined by my frequent guest Dr Peter Vincent Pry and we're talking about Ukraine and the likelihood of nuclear war. Dr Pry is executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, served as chief of staff to the congressional EMP Commission, and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum. Just recently, he published a piece titled, “The Nuclear Crisis Nobody Knows” “I think we're facing an unprecedented danger that we've never experienced in the nuclear missile age, worse than Cuba, a circumstance where we are on the threshold of a nuclear war, nuclear attack, from Russia.” Nobody knows what's in Putin's mind but apparently he going to just keep using his conventional forces to overwhelm the Ukrainians and eventually achieve victory in Ukraine at a conventional level. But many people predicted that the Russian conventional military would just steamroll through Ukraine in a couple of days, and that hasn't happened. So what's the probability Putin then decides, “I'm under pressure from my political enemies and I've got to wind this thing up. Maybe use a few tactical nuclear weapons in order to bring this to more rapid conclusion." If he did, how would the Biden administration respond? He knows that Biden's is the most anti-nuclear administration that we have ever had. There are many anti-nuclear activists in the Biden administration and their agenda is to deeply reduce US nuclear weapons and US dependency on nuclear deterrence. Peter explains, “these people don't believe that any rational actor would ever use nuclear weapons and, therefore, all you need is a bare-minimum deterrent. That's one of the things that makes the current nuclear crisis most dangerous, because Biden is acting as if Putin would have to be a mad man to use nuclear weapons, that it was not a rational decision that he would make, despite the fact that Russian doctrine calls for that, that they've exercised it, that their force structure is clearly designed for war fighting and surprise attack. And that's why the Biden administration are like children playing with nuclear fire.” Most of our information about Ukraine is coming from two biased sources that have an interest in making the Russian army look as bad as possible: the Ukrainians and the Biden administration. Putin has put his forces on nuclear alert and there are reports that he has self-deployed himself to his nuclear bunker. Also, that the United States put its “Doomsday Plane” into the air last week. Is this true? Are we going to blunder into a nuclear war over Ukraine? Peter has a comprehensive grasp of the issues. Another listen well worth the time.

There are growing calls among political elites in Washington for the United States to “do something" about preventing a Russian invasion of the Ukraine. But do we have the military capabilities to stop it? Why do we want Ukraine to join NATO? Does Ukraine matter? Why are American politicians who have been so soft toward Moscow for their entire political careers all of a sudden turn uber hawks against Vladimir Putin. Are we pushing China and Russia to make common cause with each other? Does the Biden foreign policy team have a clue what they're doing? To get some answers to these and many many other questions, two seasoned national security analysts - and returning guests - Peter Pry and Mike Waller - weigh in. J. Michael Waller, PhD, is Senior Analyst for Strategy at the Center for Security Policy and Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, is the former Executive Director of the EMP Task Force on National and Homeland Security Some sample observations: “Russia and China are already in an alliance that poses the most formidable combination that the Western democracies have faced in their history,” warns Peter Pry It's worse than that. This combination also includes North Korea and Iran creating a new power block that Washington just doesn't seem to want to acknowledge. Russia can overrun Ukraine and the frontline NATO states in 72 hours. The Pentagon's had 18 Taiwan war games and in its own war games scenarios, we have lost every one of them. If you want a real and informed tutorial about the possibilities of war with Russia, Ukraine, China and Taiwan, this is a must listen. It's a sobering 60 minutes, but well worth your time.

This show comes at time that this episode's guest, Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, calls our “hinge of fate.” Our topic is his riveting paper "Surprise Attack: ICBMs and the Real Nuclear Threat" where he lays bare the world's current and future nuclear warfare realities. It's an issue that many simply do not want to think about. As Peter puts it, “when it comes to nuclear weapons, U.S. and Western strategic culture mostly thinks and acts in a state of denial and unreality. Nuclear weapons of mass destruction are antithetical to our ethos.” But as Leon Trotsky warned, “You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.” By contrast, totalitarian states - China, Russia and North Korea - love, celebrate, and parade nuclear missiles as symbols of their omnipotence and their potential “final solution” to the vexing existence of free peoples, like the United States. The U.S. “Triad” comprises decades old bombers, ICBMs and missile submarines, requiring years to modernize, while Russia, China, and North Korea have mostly new systems and are developing new delivery vehicles that have no counterparts in the U.S. deterrent, including ASBMs, nuclear-powered cruise missiles, autonomous submarines like Russia's Poseidon, and hypersonic strategic warheads. They believe they could win a nuclear war. The “unthinkable” is becoming increasingly “thinkable” and someday soon may become irresistible to them. Yet space-based strategic defenses can turn the technological tide, if the U.S. awakens and acts— before it is too late. Dr. Peter Vincent Pry has vast experience in national security, where he's served as Executive Director of the EMP Task Force on National and Homeland Security, Director of the United States Nuclear Strategy Forum, Chief advisor to the Vice Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and the Vice Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, and to the Chairman of the Terrorism Panel. Dr. Pry was an Intelligence Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency responsible for analyzing Soviet and Russian nuclear strategy. Give this a 50 minute listen to learn what's at stake for America.

It's time to wake up to an existential risk that looms infinitely larger than anything posed by the Covid 19 virus. Electromagnetic pulse (EMP). EMP can be caused by either a naturally occurring solar storm or a manmade suitcase sized device and would collapse electric grids and electrical critical infrastructures all over the world A nationwide blackout lasting one year could kill up to 90 percent of the American people, through starvation, disease, and societal collapse. Moreover, EMP is the ultimate cyber-weapon in the military doctrines and plans of Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. The threat is not theoretical. A solar storm EMP occurred in 1859 at the dawn of our electrical age and destroyed telegraph systems everywhere in the world. “Today, the impact would be catastrophic. Power grids would collapse all over the world. And all of the life sustaining critical infrastructures, telecommunications, transportation, business, finance, even food and water, depend directly or indirectly upon electricity. And advanced electronic civilization in the whole world, even in African countries depend upon electricity now for the survival of their people,” warns my guest Dr. Peter Vincent Pry But preventing this terrifying scenario “has never enjoyed popular or government sustained focus” explains my other guest Frank Gaffney. Join me as I learn in this riveting conversation about what our government is doing - or more accurately not doing - to protect America from this threat. My Guests: Dr Pry is executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and the author of The Power And The Light: The Congressional EMP Commission's War To Save America 2001-2020 Frank Gaffney founder of the Center for Security Policy and Vice Chairman of the Committee for the Present Danger: China.
