Whether intentional or not, influencers in the online space often make their lives look aspirational and effortless. Whether it’s gaining followers or making money, the lifestyle may appear “easy,” but while the job does come with some exciting highs, it also brings with it behind-the-scenes lows.  We see so many bloggers, content creators, coaches, online experts, and gurus painting the online space as your escape from the corporate world, but they fail to mention that it’s not always sunshine and roses. Just like any other line of work, being an influencer and working with brands can be challenging, and also not necessarily scalable, which is why I’m excited to have Jen Morilla back this week to give us the honest truth!  If you don’t know Jen, she was my first guest ever on Beyond Influential, Episode 1, where we talked about her life as a full-time, impact-driven travel influencer under the brand name The Social Girl Traveler. (You might also remember her from Ep. 131 on our biggest business mistakes with Christina Galbato!) Over the last three years, a lot has changed and evolved in her brand and business…Jen is now an online business expert, mentoring women who want to create and scale impact-driven businesses online, and she is not holding back on sharing her story.  In this week’s episode, Jen joins me again to talk about the low points in her journey as an entrepreneur, including admissions she has never made publicly before (and most influencers would never admit!). From a relentless travel and content creation schedule, to getting into five figures of debt and nearly giving up, to climbing out of the hole, finding success, and making thousands a month from her online courses and coaching, Jen walks us through her story since that first conversation we had back in the Fall of 2017, and shares the insights she’s picked up along the way. If you need a little motivation, this conversation might be just the thing you need to keep pushing through the challenges! On Ep. 133, we cover:  The behind-the-scenes struggles of the travel blogger & influencer lifestyle  The potential pitfalls of monetizing your passion: burnout, mental health & mindset issues How Jen got herself into $23,000 of debt as an influencer, developed a healthy money mindset, and the action steps she took to get herself out of the red Business coaching: the new MLM? Have you ever freaked out about a mistake you’ve made in your business and had to call on your business besties to get you through it? There is no “perfect” in entrepreneurship and you need to have people you trust around you who will give it to you straight (and also hype you up when you need it!). Madelyn Moon, yes that’s her real last name, calls herself a walking permission slip, soul igniter and devoted teacher. Maddy started her podcast 6 years ago, Mind Body Musings, which is a top-50 ranking self-improvement podcast. She is an author and a coach on a mission to unite opposite elements and help people fight perfectionism in eating and in life. One of my last guests Jen Morilla recommended I talk to her as she might be able to shed some light on this confusing time of anxiety and uncertainty. Maddy moved here over a year ago and currently lives in Brooklyn with her dog Ollie. Maddy admits that New York “sparked something inside me that had not been sparked before!” When everyone told her to move to LA she felt drawn to New York. Despite the abundance of things to do, she reminds us to find the stillness and peace in this city and to let pleasure lead you. Instead of making a list of places she needed to go, she has a note in her phone of New York adventures from her moving initiation to spending an entire day finding a bathroom. She keeps it real at this time of heartbreak to feel the feels and gives people permission to embrace this great pause. The Social Girl Traveler @thesocialgirltraveler ABOUT JEN MORILLA - from her website LIFE-LIVER. DREAM GO-GETTER. DRIVEN BY SOCIAL IMPACT & PURPOSE. I am an IMPACT TRAVEL INFLUENCER. I am clean water initiator. Using my influence for GOOD. I work with Sustainable, Social, and NGO Brands/Companies to create stories and inspire others to change the world. My mission is to create incredible possibilities of transformation for humankind to live lives of impact, purpose, and badassery. When I travel the world my purpose is to discover humanity, understand a culture and connect emotionally with people… and as I do that, I am tirelessly driven to leave a little something behind that can change a life. I’m Jen, solo female traveler. I am Cuban-American from New York City. Only 3-years-ago I was working for a marketing agency when I sold my car, some belongings, and bought a one way. I traded my 9-5 for a budget, backpack, and traveling for good. It’s been three years and I haven’t looked back since! I am a Youtuber, a writer, and a clean water courier. but I really call myself a ‘life-liver’. I dream big and make my dreams happen.

Jen Morilla is an impact travel influencer. What does that mean? It means she travels the world and writes about her experiences but also has a central mission. At first, she started out with the mission to "change the world" that has since gotten more specific. She has been bringing water filters to many different villages across the globe and impacted an estimated 12,000 people globally What has been meaningful for her is not bringing the water filters, but teaching people how to solve problems. Her own journey is an experience of learning as well - spending time on youtube and learning from others to develop skills in video editing, writing and more. She never saw this as a risky move and saw that if she was at the same job in five years (although her view of the empire state building was pretty nice!), that she would always regret not having tried.Find Jen Here:DONATE + MORE Here => Jen MorillaSocial Girl TravelerInstagram - @thesocialgirltravelerTwitter - @socialtravelerOrganizations She Admires:Storyteller FlagmateWorld Travelers AssociationInfluences: Tim FerrisTony RobbinsJay Shetty, Wisdom InfluencerNas DailyOprah (no link needed)Her Book Recommendation:Grit by Angela Duckworth
