Your pancreas will create insulin in response to sugar levels, but prediabetes and diabetes happen when it can't keep up. There are zero symptoms for prediabetes, and it's likely only diagnosed if you have your blood sugars checked. Some indicators could be high blood pressure, low triglycerides, or high HDL cholesterol. The good news is prediabetes can be reversed by - you guessed it! - incorporating healthy lifestyle changes like exercise, eating more fresh produce and reducing sugar intake, and improving your sleep and stress levels. The Nutrition Diva's Quick and Dirty Tips for Eating Well and Feeling Fabulous
My guest on the podcast today is Jill Weisenberger. She's a registered dietitian nutritionist, certified diabetes care and education specialist, and the author of Prediabetes: A Complete Guide, which is now out in a newly updated 2nd edition. And the timing couldn't be better because a couple of days after I received the announcement about the release of the updated edition, I got the results of some bloodwork that was done as part of a routine physical. And my fasting blood glucose reading was 101… with a little “H” next to it to indicate that this reading is considered “high.” In fact, a fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 124 meets the diagnostic criteria for prediabetes. So, this topic just got personal for me!Highlights from our conversation:How prediabetes is diagnosed (there's more to it than just a single test result)The importance of putting individual test results into contextWho is at risk (more people than you might think)Why Type 2 diabetes (and prediabetes) are not always or only due to lifestyle choicesThe two main issues that cause high blood sugar in people with diabetesNon-dietary strategies for increasing insulin sensitivityThe three different types of physical activity and how they affect blood sugar metabolismThe best timing for exerciseThe type of carbohydrates that improve insulin sensitivityThe role of supplements in managing blood sugarWeight-neutral approaches to diabetes care and preventionResource for listeners: Pre-diabetes checklistPre-Diabetes: A Complete GuideFind Jill across the web:https://jillweisenberger.com/https://twitter.com/nutritionjillhttps://www.instagram.com/nutritionjill/https://www.facebook.com/NutritionJillNutrition Diva is hosted by Monica Reinagel. Hey there! I'm Jill Weisenberger … … a registered dietitian nutritionist, certified diabetes care and education specialist, certified health and wellness coach and certifiable food lover. Changing my habits and thoughts brought me greater health and more joy. I've helped thousands of others improve their health too. I remember when I thought it was a personal weakness that my lunch started at a fast food restaurant and ended with chocolate. Why didn't I simply do what I knew was right? After some soul-searching and a few (or a lot) of missteps, I did. Bit by bit, I created my healthy habits and a bucket of energy by setting myself up for success, relying on solid routines, changing my mindset, and dropping that useless view that eating and exercise are either all good or all bad. With relief, I discovered that not eating perfectly isn't a personal weakness. I can help you too. Whether you have diabetes, prediabetes, heart disease or you simply need a better way to lead your life to avoid health problems down the road, you'll find answers to your questions about food, nutrition and healthy habits right here. Jill Weisenberger explains how losing weight is more about having the right skills and not so much will power.
Amy chats with Jill Weisenberger about how to eat with purpose and how that can help manage losing weight.
We're talking about 'HEART HEALTH & DIABETES' with musical inspiration from the rock band "Heart". Adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to die from heart disease than adults without diabetes. People with insulin resistance or diabetes in combination with one or more of these risk factors are at even greater risk of heart disease or stroke. However, by managing their risk factors, people with diabetes may avoid or delay the development of heart and blood vessel disease. The rock band "Heart" was started in Seattle in the 1960s. Heart’s mix of hard rock and folk yielded one of the longest lasting and most commercially successful bands of all time. The band is fronted by sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson who wrote many of the band's songs. Heart's new “Love Alive” Tour kicks off this Summer with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, Elle King, and Lucie Silvas. Guests include Author of 'Nutrition & You' Dr. Joan Salge Blake, EdD, RDN, LDN, FAND, Jill Weisenberger, MS, RDN, CDE, CHWC, FAND, Glucose SOS founder Pamela Heyward and the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach. Throughout the podcast we will be playing music from Heart’s "The Essential Heart" album courtesy of SONY Music
