Send us a textCould changing your diet in your 70s actually improve your health, or is it too late? According to nutrition expert Amy Covington, the power to transform health through diet remains strong throughout our entire lives.Amy shares the remarkable story of a senior who initially refused to change his eating habits but experienced dramatic improvements in his diabetes management and mobility after just six months of nutritional changes. This transformation challenges the widespread belief that older adults can't reverse chronic conditions or improve their metabolic health.Drawing from her experience overseeing Utah's nutrition programs and researching senior malnutrition, Amy distinguishes between simply "plant-based" eating and truly nutritious whole foods. She offers practical approaches for seniors hesitant to completely eliminate animal products, suggesting an 80-20 rule that allows flexibility while maximizing health benefits.Perhaps most valuable are her strategies for addressing decreased appetite, a critical issue for many seniors. From making mealtimes social events to enhancing food's visual appeal and stimulating appetite through light activity, these techniques help break the cycle of poor nutrition that often accelerates health decline. Amy also recommends specific screening tools caregivers can use to identify nutrition risks before they become serious medical concerns.Whether you're caring for an aging parent, working professionally with seniors, or planning for your own healthy aging journey, these evidence-based nutrition strategies offer a path to enhanced quality of life. Discover how simple changes like incorporating more colorful vegetables, switching to whole grains, and being mindful about protein sources can significantly impact wellness in our later years.• Nutrition changes can significantly improve health at any age – even in your 70s or 80s• Plant-based nutrition offers specific benefits for chronic conditions common in seniors• Small changes like following the 80/20 rule can make meaningful health improvements• Decreased appetite is a major concern for seniors, often creating a cycle of poor nutrition• Eating with seniors, making meals visually appealing, and encouraging light exercise can improve appetite• Eating less red meat (ideally twice monthly) and focusing on whole grains offers significant health benefits• Medicare and Medicaid increasingly recognize nutrition services for chronic conditions• Simple screening tools like the Malnutrition Screening Tool can help identify nutrition risks• Frozen fruits and vegetables are cost-effective alternatives that maintain nutritional value• Changing the plate composition to include more colorful vegetables and fruits is an easy first stepContact your local Area Agency on Aging through das.utah.gov/locations to learn about meal programs and nutrition services available in your county.Support the show

In this episode of Over 40 Fitness Hacks, Brad Williams reviews Cronometer, a nutrition-tracking app that provides detailed insights into vitamin and mineral intake. Brad explains his interest in the app due to its precise tracking of micronutrients, which makes it easy to identify any nutritional deficiencies. He appreciates how Cronometer allows users to log food, scan barcodes, and review nutrient levels, making it easier to make adjustments either through diet or supplementation. Brad also shares a recurring issue he finds with fitness apps in general: they often overestimate calorie burn. While Cronometer calculates his basal metabolic rate (BMR) around 2,500 calories, his experience with the Whoop 4.0 fitness tracker, which he's used for six months, suggests a more accurate estimate of 2,000-2,100 calories. Brad emphasizes that precise data is essential for anyone over 40 trying to maintain or lose weight. Though he finds Cronometer useful, he believes that long-term tracking may not be necessary for everyone. Instead, a focused month could provide the insight needed to fine-tune nutrition. For comprehensive fitness tracking, Brad still recommends Whoop 4.0, especially for its accuracy in calorie burn and sleep data, and encourages his listeners to explore it as a valuable tool for optimizing their fitness journey as they age. It is estimated that American adults consume 10-15g of fiber/per day and the RDA for adult women is to consume up to 25g and men up to 38g. As a whole, we are about halfway to where we need to be. We know fiber contributes to overall health and wellness, keeping you fuller for longer, aids in regular bowel movements, lowers cholesterol and stabilizes blood glucose levels. Did you know that consuming fiber leads to reduced levels of anxiety and depression, increased mood stabilization, weight loss and management, improved cognition, nutrient absorption, and decreased risk of colon cancer? When you eat fiber, it feeds the good bacteria in your microbiome, which in turn produce compounds called short-chain fatty acids, or postbiotics, and they are pretty important and fascinating. Women in menopause would greatly benefit from increasing their fiber intake for this reason alone.I have invited Ashley Koff to share her expertise on this topic to help you better understand what short-chain fatty acids are, why they matter to midlife women, and how to include more fiber in easy ways. It's not the sexiest topic, but it's a must-know for menopausal women.Ashley Koff is an award-winning personalized registered dietician and nutrition expert. For over 25 years, she has helped people identify optimal food choices to support their overall health. She coined the terms “Qualitarian” “INFObesity," and the mantra “Better, Not Perfect” and created the only existing definition for Better Nutrition to help people better understand what's better for them. If you've never been an addict, you may be surprised to know many programmers (and other people in tech job roles) struggle with drug use. Nobody working in tech is a stranger to stress and pressure! But sometimes the ways we cope are unhealthy. If you're currently using, I've been honest and transparent with you - I've been there. I was a marijuana addict for 25 years, and often used it with the rationale that it helped me manage the stress of my job. However, I learned the hard way that using drugs to cope with work creates more problems than it solves. In this episode, I'd like to help you understand WHY drug use is so prevalent in the tech industry. I'll also share the consequences to your career that arise from ongoing use of drugs. And finally, I'll offer some healthier ways to cope with the inherent problems that programming and tech related jobs introduce - rather than turning to drugs as a coping mechanism. Ax throwing. Log balancing. Carrying kettlebells through the forest. Standup paddling. Visitors to Gray Cook's lake cabin invariably do some activities that might seem unconventional at first but actually train every major movement pattern and then some. Gray applies a similar real-world lens to the movement and function assessments that he co-created for athletes, including the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), Functional Capacity Screen (FCS) and Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). When Basketball Strong co-host Tim DiFrancesco was the S&C coach for the Lakers, he used these screens to identify the gaps in their movement literacy so that he could make them more durable on the court. Gray's practices are used across the NBA and in many college and high school programs, and his movement philosophies and practices offer coaches, parents, and players at every level the chance to reduce the risk of injury, increase strength, power, balance, and speed, and play the game better for longer. In this episode, Gray shares: What movement patterns and exercises are best suited to basketball players and other tall athletesHow to improve balance, squatting, rotation, jumping, and more What S+C coaches, PTs, ATs and other professionals can do to help players with ACL injuries avoid getting hurt againWhat “functional” training does and doesn't meanWhich physical qualities should be developed to make basketball players more durable and how the FMS can help identify weaknesses that can be turned into strengthsHow John Wooden ensured his UCLA teams were fresher than their opponents in the fourth quarterClick here to read Gray's books and articles, find seminars and other resources on the Functional Movement website, and keep an eye out for Gray's new book, The Business of Movement.

Research findings from Mayo Clinic & published in the Journal of the American Heart Association at the end of 2022 found that “participating in religious activities, from church services to private prayer, as well as holding deep spiritual beliefs, are linked to better cardiovascular health among Black Americans.” According to Dr Brewer of the Mayo Clinic, multiple socially determined challenges which were magnified by COVID-19 are preventing African Americans from living their best lives by following a healthy lifestyle to prevent heart disease. The recent study focused on better understanding some of the psychosocial influences on health behavior change among African Americans, and in particular following those activities as defined by The American Heart Association's “Life's Essential 8TM.” These include eating well, being active, quitting tobacco, healthy sleep, weight management, controlling cholesterol, managing blood sugar, & managing blood pressure.  The study found that increased church attendance and spirituality was associated with higher levels of physical activity and less smoking, suggesting that having social support and an optimistic outlook may also encourage individuals to practice healthy behaviors. Today's discussion features Robert “Clarence” Jones, M. Ed., CPH, CHW, CPE, Executive Director at the Hue-MAN Partnership and a Community Engagement Strategist, along with Mayo Clinic cardiologist and study lead author Dr. LaPrincess Brewer, MD, MPH, whose primary research focus is in developing strategies to reduce and ultimately eliminate cardiovascular disease health disparities in racial and ethnic minority populations and in underserved communities. Dr. Brewer is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic. This episode is hosted by Dr. Mary O'Connor, Chair of Movement is Life and Co-Founder of Vori Health.
