“One of the most precious public possessions of the empire” [BERY]    Joel Meadows began what eventually became Sherlock Holmes and the Empire Builders: The Gene Genie in 2002 while working on Tripwire as a quarterly print magazine. He tells us the story of how it took two decades to bring this vision to life with illustrator Andy Bennett, and what the plans are for part two of the story. The initial Kickstarter for part one was wildly successful, and the Kickstarter for the sequel is under way.  The praise has been effusive:  “A darn good romp” – Guillermo del Toro, Oscar-winning director “Classic Sherlock Holmes! You can smell the chimney-smoke and feel the clatter of hooves. Here's the character we all know and love, given a fresh polish for the 21st century!” – Ian Rankin, Rebus The fusion of history and mystery form Joel's perfect nexus, and he's extending his efforts from graphic novel to a novella next.  We've moved the Sherlockian News to an exclusive monthly bonus track for  (watch for that to drop), and added a new segment: "The Learned Societies," all about activities going on in in Sherlockian groups. In this episode, we cover some of the BSI Weekend activities. Madeline Quiñones had diligently prepared an installment of "A Chance of Listening," her review of Sherlockian podcasts, that we missed last epsiode, so we make up for it this time. And of course the Canonical Couplet quiz awaits to test your Sherlockian knowledge. The winner, chosen at random from all correct answers, will receive Sherlock Holmes and the Empire Builders. Send your answer to comment @ ihearofsherlock .com by February 14, 2025 at 11:59 a.m. EST. He's written two books about comics: Studio Space (as co-author) about where and how 20 of the world's best comic artists work, and Masters of Comics, which covered more comic artists and their workspaces. The publication in April of Stanford University's Artificial Intelligence Index Annual Report has provided the art world with much food for thought. We look at the implications for artists and institutions with Louis Jebb, the managing editor of The Art Newspaper and our technology specialist. As the Centre Pompidou in Paris is taken over on all its floors by what it calls the “ninth art”—graphic novels and comics—we talk to Joel Meadows, the editor-in-chief of Tripwire magazine and a comics aficionado, about the rise of this subculture in museums and the market. And this episode's Work of the Week is Edgar Degas' Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando (1879), which depicts a Black circus performer, Anna Albertine Olga Brown, who was briefly known as Miss La La. She and the painting are the subject of a new exhibition at the National Gallery in London opening next week. We talk to Anne Robbins, the curator of paintings at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and external curator of the exhibition, and Sterre Overmars, the curatorial fellow for post-1800 paintings at the National Gallery, about the painting.Comics on Every Floor, Centre Pompidou, Paris, until 4 November.Discover Degas & Miss La La, National Gallery, London, 6 June-1 September. Tripwire: The Genre Magazine celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017. Zines dedicated to comic books, science fiction, and genre TV shows and films come and go pretty quickly around the world. They all start with a singular dedication – perhaps obsession – but most vanish in the face of long hours, hard work, little or no compensation and an equal amount of recognition. JOEL MEADOWS podcast excerpt: "Before 'Tripwire,' I would read a magazine called 'Speakeasy.' I'm not sure if it made it to the States, but it was a very snarky British comics magazine. They used to have a column from Grant Morrison. It was sort of a template for us." Cover of Tripwire: The Genre Magazine, 2008 issue And then there is Tripwire: The Genre Magazine, the UK’s enduring cornocopia of interviews, reviews, analysis and previews of everything from Marvel and DC comics to James Bond, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Dredd and much, much more. Tripwire is celebrating its 25th anniversary in print and online in 2017, a phenomenal accomplishment by any media survival standard. And remaining at its helm for the entire quarter-century is its editor and founder Joel Meadows, whom I’m honored to call a personal friend for almost four years. This is his second appearance on the show. JOEL MEADOWS podcast excerpt: "For decades, 'Doctor Who' wasn't popular in the States. Then you had this reboot with Christpher Eccleston and suddenly everything clicked. Why hasn't 'Dredd'? That's a fair question; I don't know! '200 A.D. just had its 40th anniversary, but 'Dredd' still feels like a cult thing where 'Doctor Who' is insanely huge in the U.S." Joel Meadows Website • Tripwire on Facebook • Joel Meadows on Facebook • Download Tripwire Digital Magazine from iTunes Order Will Eisner: A Spirited Life (2nd Edition) by Bob Andelman, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above!     The Party Authority in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland!

Humans have been making use of fire for around a million years, but what if we've been doing it wrong? In the first half of the episode we talk how to do it right, with rocket stoves and biochar, with appropriate technologist Joel Meadows. Where there is smoke there is fire, but the reverse need not be true says Joel. Smoke is merely inefficiently burnt wood, and all those coughs, cancers and deforestation through the eons were sadly for nought. Rocket stoves are almost smokeless and can be built from scrap. In the second half of the show we talk with climate scientist Professor David Karoly. He and fellow Climate Change Authority member Professor Clive Hamilton recently released an unprecedented Minority Report arguing that the Authority's latest majority report is politicised and its recommendations lead towards dangerous warming rather than minimising climate change.

Badges will most likely sell out within the hour... But this is assuming everything will go smoothly. In this episode, Leonard and Alyssa will be looking over the events of the Badge Sale to commentate on the highs and lows of the day. We'll be joined by hangout regular and fan favourite Mark Searby to talk about his efforts as part of a badge team - here's fingers crossed he'll be in a good mood! We'll also be joined by Joel Meadows of Tripwire Magazine who is attending London Super Comic Convention this weekend - he'll be reporting live on the highlights of the first major UK comics convention of the year. We'll hopefully also be joined by Michael Leventhal who will be giving us a report from last week's Toy Fair in New York. In this episode we speak with Joel Meadows of protective gear manufacturer Overboard, who have provided Sarah with waterproof covers for her iPad and iPhone. This will allow Sarah to use her gear in the tech-hostile conditions at sea, so she can stay connected and tell the story of her voyage. We also have some lovely feedback from Boston school children.
