Send us a textIf your thyroid results look “normal” but you still feel exhausted, foggy, or stuck — this episode will help you understand why.In this in-depth solo episode, Registered Nutritionist and Autoimmune Specialist VJ Hamilton explores why thyroid issues often start outside the thyroid. Drawing on both her personal experience and years in clinical practice, she explains how five key body systems — the gut, liver, adrenals, sex hormones, and mitochondria — can all disrupt thyroid function, slow conversion, and mimic hypothyroidism even when test results appear fine.VJ shares her own story of high TSH and low T3 without raised antibodies, unpacking how stress, inflammation, and adrenal dysregulation were at the root of her symptoms — and how she now helps clients identify similar patterns in practice. You'll learn:Why thyroid tests rarely tell the full storyHow gut and liver health shape thyroid hormone conversionThe adrenal–thyroid connection and how cortisol can mask or worsen hypothyroidismThe impact of hormone transitions like perimenopause on thyroid receptor sensitivityPractical nutrient and lifestyle strategies to support thyroid function naturallyIf you've ever felt unseen, unheard, or “normal on paper,” this conversation will give you a new lens for understanding your thyroid and your body's incredible interconnectedness.
After treatment, Dirci was told by her oncologist to go back to her life as “normal.” But as she steps into the cancer support groups, everyone is in fear of remission. Melanie received the diagnosis of breast cancer, felt the fear of if treatment would get it all, and decided now was the best time for nervous system healing -not later. She finds herself on the radiation table using her somatic tools and finding a calm and a freedom that surprises the nurses. Many people receive cancer diagnoses without anyone explaining how stress, trauma and nervous system dysregulation create the biological conditions where disease can be welcomed. For practitioners supporting clients through cancer treatment, and for individuals navigating their own healing journey, understanding the connection between stored trauma and physical health changes everything about experiencing freedom from the fear that accompanies a diagnosis, even after successful treatment. This episode shares two stories about breast cancer and the nervous system regulation work that became essential to their ability to find freedom during and after the treatment. You'll hear from Dirci, a mother of twins who developed breast cancer during the pandemic after years of daily overwhelm, and Melanie, whose postpartum anxiety and childhood hypervigilance preceded her diagnosis. Both women went where their oncologists said wouldn't make a difference—yet addressing their nervous system dysregulation became the missing, foundational piece for their emotional health. Their journeys reveal what becomes possible when we heal the underlying Biology of Trauma® instead of returning to the patterns that created illness. In this episode you'll learn: [02:01] Dirci's Story: How her sister's death, twins' therapy sessions, and daily overwhelm preceded breast cancer [10:54] When Doctors Say "Go Back to Normal": Why returning to life as usual after treatment felt wrong [14:09] The Moment Everything Clicked: Discovering trauma in her body through Dr. Aimie's interview [18:30] From Information to Embodiment: How the 21 Day Journey created awareness and presence in daily life [21:04] The Transformation Others Noticed: Looking better after cancer treatment than before diagnosis [27:02] Melanie's Story: Postpartum anxiety, rage, and hypervigilance that preceded her breast cancer diagnosis [36:04] Using Rage as a Pause Button: How anger became a coping mechanism to control overwhelming environments [41:45] Going Through Treatment with Peace: Using the heart hold on the radiation table instead of panic [48:26] Tools That Don't Wear Out: Why nervous system regulation practices remain effective years later [49:40] Healing the Next Generation: Breaking intergenerational trauma patterns by regulating your own nervous system Main Takeaways: Normal Was What Made Them Sick: When doctors said "return to life as normal," both women recognized that normal—daily overwhelm, hypervigilance, pushing through exhaustion—was what had created the conditions for illness in their bodies. Too Much Too Fast and Too Little for Too Long: Dirci's story shows how these two trauma patterns combined—sudden losses and daily therapy stressors—created chronic nervous system dysregulation that manifested as breast cancer two years later. Cancer Communities Can Create More Fear: Traditional cancer support groups focused on recurrence statistics and survival rates kept both women in fear states, while trauma healing communities offered a path toward joy and aliveness instead. Awareness Creates Different Parenting: Learning to regulate her own nervous system helped Dirci recognize when her children were in sympathetic or shutdown states, allowing her to parent from understanding rather than trying to change behaviors. The Body Needs Tending During Treatment: Melanie went through radiation and biopsies with peace by using tools like the heart hold and orienting—creating connection with medical staff instead of panic. Healing Tools That Don't Wear Out: Unlike other modalities that lose effectiveness over time, the nervous system regulation tools from the 21 Day Journey remained relevant and powerful for both women years later. Moving From Hours to Presence: Dirci shifted from feeling like she never had enough hours in the day to actually being present in her life—the essence of the healing journey. Notable Quotes: "I knew that the way my life was happening was what put me into cancer. So I needed to find help." - Dirci Souza "I don't want to have fear, I just want to support my body. I would rather be working towards finding a path to feel joy and feel alive than to take a path that brings along the fear." - Dirci Souza "Until then, I had no idea. Didn't cross my mind. Trauma. Am I traumatized? For me it was just life. What I was going through and I needed to be brave, I was surviving." - Dirci Souza "I used anxiety to fuel myself. So I would keep doing whatever it is I needed to do. That's the energy I ran on." - Melanie "I could not have imagined remaining so calm and centered going through cancer treatment. I could put my hand over my heart right there on the radiation table. That was one of my favorite moments through the whole cancer journey." - Melanie Episode Takeaway: When oncologists say "return to life as normal" after cancer treatment, they miss a critical piece: normal was often what created the conditions for illness. Both Dirci and Melanie's stories reveal how years of nervous system dysregulation—chronic hypervigilance, pushing through exhaustion, using anxiety as fuel—created the biological environment where cancer could develop. Dysregulation multiplied by time creates disease. Their diagnoses arrived after years of too much too fast combined with too little for too long. The remarkable insight: both women looked better after cancer treatment than before diagnosis. Why? They finally addressed underlying nervous system dysregulation, not just the cancer. Simple tools like the heart hold and vu breath created immediate regulation—Melanie used the heart hold on the radiation table and experienced peace instead of panic. Most powerfully, healing your nervous system heals the next generation through co-regulation, breaking intergenerational trauma biology that manifests as chronic illness decades later. Today, on Karl and Crew, we kicked off the week with testimonies from our listeners. We spent a few hours asking our listeners, “How has the Gospel changed you?” We then spent some time sharing our own stories of transformation. It’s important to share how God has worked and continues to work in our lives, as it can touch the hearts of others. As a ministry dedicated to sharing the gospel, we want to continue in this work as it leads into our Fall SHARE, starting on Wednesday, October 1, and running through Saturday, October 4. During this time, we invite our listeners to join us in the ongoing sharing of the Gospel. You can be the reason someone hears the Gospel today and lives in the hope found only in Christ. Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 420The Saint of the day is Saint John EudesSaint John Eudes’ Story How little we know where God's grace will lead. Born on a farm in northern France, John died at 78 in the next “county” or department. In that time, he was a religious, a parish missionary, founder of two religious communities, and a great promoter of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. John joined the religious community of the Oratorians and was ordained a priest at 24. During severe plagues in 1627 and 1631, he volunteered to care for the stricken in his own diocese. Lest he infect his fellow religious, during the plague he lived in a huge cask in the middle of a field. At age 32, John became a parish missionary. His gifts as a preacher and confessor won him great popularity. He preached over 100 parish missions, some lasting from several weeks to several months. In his concern with the spiritual improvement of the clergy, John realized that the greatest need was for seminaries. He had permission from his general superior, the bishop, and even Cardinal Richelieu to begin this work, but the succeeding general superior disapproved. After prayer and counsel, John decided it was best to leave the religious community. That same year John founded a new community, ultimately called the Eudists—the Congregation of Jesus and Mary–devoted to the formation of the clergy by conducting diocesan seminaries. The new venture, while approved by individual bishops, met with immediate opposition, especially from Jansenists and some of his former associates. John founded several seminaries in Normandy, but was unable to get approval from Rome—partly, it was said, because he did not use the most tactful approach. In his parish mission work, John was disturbed by the sad condition of prostitutes who sought to escape their miserable life. Temporary shelters were found, but arrangements were not satisfactory. A certain Madeleine Lamy, who had cared for several of the women, one day said to him, “Where are you off to now? To some church, I suppose, where you'll gaze at the images and think yourself pious. And all the time what is really wanted of you is a decent house for these poor creatures.” The words, and the laughter of those present, struck deeply within him. The result was another new religious community, called the Sisters of Charity of the Refuge. John Eudes is probably best known for the central theme of his writings: Jesus as the source of holiness; Mary as the model of the Christian life. His devotion to the Sacred Heart and to the Immaculate Heart led Pope Pius XI to declare him the father of the liturgical cult of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Reflection Holiness is the wholehearted openness to the love of God. It is visibly expressed in many ways, but the variety of expression has one common quality: concern for the needs of others. In John's case, those who were in need were plague-stricken people, ordinary parishioners, those preparing for the priesthood, prostitutes, and all Christians called to imitate the love of Jesus and his mother. In this episode, Kristina and Anna unpack one of the most deceptively charming villains in the Inner Villain system: the Eternal Child, also known as the Peter Pan archetype. From its origins as “Norman Bates” to the deep dive into J.M. Barrie's surprisingly toxic Peter Pan, this conversation explores how the Eternal Child is rooted in the mother wound, thrives on confabulated reality, and resists the grounded action that real growth requires. You'll hear how this archetype shows up in everyday relationships, the difference between harmless childlike play and destructive immaturity, and why “love bombing” often masks the need to be taken care of. Kristina shares personal stories, literary analysis, and a biting “Am I the Asshole?” example that perfectly illustrates this villain in action. We also explore the Hero form (The Reflective) and the Legend form (The Traveler), and how travel, self-awareness, and facing reality are key to moving out of the Eternal Child cycle. What you'll learn in this episode:How the Eternal Child confabulates reality vs. intentionally gaslightsThe entitlement of “having your cake and eating it too” in relationshipsWhy Peter Pan is a surprisingly dark figure when you read the original storyHow the Eternal Child differs from the Vain Controller (Regina George)Real-life and pop culture examples, from Kanye West to Parks & Rec's AndyPractical ways to recognize and invert the Eternal Child archetypeTake the Inner Villain Quiz: https://www.kristinawiltsee.com Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Backstory often gets blamed for slowing a story down. Writers are told to cut it, sprinkle it lightly, or avoid it altogether. But here's the truth: the wrong backstory, delivered the wrong way, at the wrong time is the problem.Used with intention, backstory can reveal the wounds and desires that drive your character, raise the stakes, and transform an ordinary scene into one that lingers with readers. In this episode, I'll share:3 powerful ways to use backstory so it deepens, rather than derails, your storyHow to spot when your backstory is drowning out the narrativeA simple technique to keep time jumps clear and seamless for your readerWhether your draft is overloaded with flashbacks or you're struggling to weave in your character's past, this episode will help you use backstory as the tool it's meant to be.Episode Web PageWant to join a community of like-minded writers? Resident Evil changed everything. When originally released in 1996, what was once a niche genre for enthusiasts was now a blockbuster staple in every second home. All of a sudden people were craving zombies, horrifying monsters and disturbing themes. It was so popular that Square, far more known for its more traditional JRPGs, decided to throw its hat in the ring and make Parasite Eve.On the surface, the game appeared to be textbook survival horror. But dig a little deeper and you could see that Square was unable to escape its roots. Turn based mode happened in a sphere similar to Vagrant Story, upgrades were plentiful and incremental, and the storytelling had more cutscenes than gameplay at least in the early stages. Thematically this was still horrifying…but under the hood was a different story. Was this blend of genres ultimately successful, giving survival horror a fresh new perspective? Or is it impossible to reconcile grim resources management with the power fantasy that RPGS almost always offer? On this episode, we discuss:StoryHow does Parasite Eve use real world science to lend an air of credibility to the horrific changes that are happening all over Manhattan? Does it execute the smaller details well even if the larger picture is a bit silly at times?CombatHow enjoyable is the moment to moment real time combat of Parasite Eve? The game requires you to dodge attacks, and pick the best moment to strike. Is this too simplistic or does it work well?ProgressionHow do the weapon and armour upgrades work in Parasite Eve? Does it provide the player with a satisfying sense of progression, or is it all just a confusing mess?We answer these questions and many more on the 132nd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherParasite Eve OST: Yoko Shinomura—What crazy weapon upgrade paths do you like to use? “When you are speaking and you're in front of people and you give them the momentum to look at life from a different perspective or do something they don't have the courage to do, you could help change people's lives.”Podcasts are full of powerhouse moments, but few stories capture the grit, honesty, and resolve it takes to truly make an impact the way Stacey Chillemi's does. On this episode of The Speaker Lab, Stacey sits down with Grant Baldwin and peels back the curtain on her journey—from overcoming epilepsy and setbacks in the corporate world to building a thriving career as a speaker, bestselling author, and podcast host.Stacey talks openly about the uphill climb, the self-doubt, the setbacks, and the reality that success is never an overnight story. For Stacey, building a speaking business meant reaching out to anyone who would listen, stubbornly persevering through rejection, and finding conviction in her own lived experience—even when the path forward felt unclear. This episode is a masterclass in resilient action. Stacey lays it out straight that your story is enough, but confidence comes from doing the work consistently. She reminds us that fulfillment isn't about chasing perfection but about putting yourself out there, showing up with empathy, and taking the first step, even when you're not sure what comes next. If you're someone waiting for the “right time” to chase your dream or if you need a nudge to believe your story matters, let Stacey's hard-won wisdom and relentless optimism show you what's possible when you bet on yourself! You'll learn:The unrealistic expectation of overnight successHow Stacey helps others by sharing her storyHow difficulties impacted Stacey's career pathThe power speaking has on creating emotional impactAdvice for when your story doesn't feel “big enough”Challenges of narrowing broad experiences into a focused messageThe value of cold outreachAnd much, much more!“I had self doubt and I had to work on building confidence in myself, and anytime I saw that I made some mistakes, I had to tweak it, and fix it, and just keep moving forward.”Episode ResourcesStacey's Website2 Day Booked and Paid BootcampGet Free Speaker ResourcesBook a Call with The Speaker LabCalculate Your Speaking FeeJoin The Speaker Lab Community on FacebookSubscribe on Apple PodcastsSubscribe on SpotifySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Exit to Excellence: How Founders Can Transition with Purpose and Power What if the biggest barrier to a successful business exit isn't market conditions or company valuation, but the founder's inability to imagine life without their business? In this episode, Dr. James Bryant reunites with Jerome Myers, exit strategist and business partner, to explore why 80% of businesses listed for sale never complete their transaction—and why 75% of those who do exit regret their decision. Whether you're an engineering leader building a consultancy, planning your eventual exit, or simply interested in leadership development, this conversation reveals why identity work is just as important as financial planning. Episode SummaryIn this episode of Fat and Fertile, I'm joined by the brilliant Dr. Alice Keeley – also known as The HeavyWeight Midwife. Alice has over 20 years' experience as a midwife, completed a PhD on plus-size pregnancy care, and is fiercely committed to challenging the weight stigma baked into our maternity systems. We get stuck into the reality of being pregnant in a bigger body – from being weighed without consent at booking appointments, to automatic referrals that leave people feeling confused, judged, and “high risk” before anything's even gone wrong. Alice breaks down how these moments impact care, and shares her passion for creating a more personalised, compassionate, and evidence-based approach to pregnancy support. We also explore Alice's own journey – how her background in social justice shaped her care values, how she came to launch The HeavyWeight Midwife in 2022, and why she believes confidence and communication are essential for navigating pregnancy with autonomy and self-trust.In this episode, I talk about:Why BMI-based guidelines don't tell the full storyHow weight stigma shows up in maternity care (and what to do about it)What's actually useful to know about risks in plus-size pregnancyHow to advocate for yourself at appointments – even when it feels scaryWhy scans, referrals, and medication should always involve informed consentThe surprising role that things like wind and tissue density play in ultrasound scans (!)And why water birth access is a fat-positive issue we should all be talking aboutAlice also shares how her online community and trimester-by-trimester courses are helping thousands of people feel seen, supported, and prepared for pregnancy and birth on their own terms.Links and ResourcesEmail me: nicola@nicolasalmon.co.ukFind me on Instagram: @fatpositivefertilityMy book: Fat and Fertile – available via AmazonAlice's website: theheavyweightmidwife.comConnect with Alice on Instagram: @theheavyweightmidwifeFind Alice's support programmes and membership via her websiteListen to Alice's podcast: The HeavyWeight Midwife PodcastGet InvolvedNicola would love to hear from you! Star Wars Generations: Andor Season 2 Finale Reactions - The Dawn of RebellionThe groundbreaking Andor series reaches its powerful conclusion, connecting directly to Rogue One and reshaping how we view the Star Wars universe. In this episode, hosts Matthew and Alex share their immediate reactions to the final episodes of Andor Season 2, examining how the show bridges crucial gaps in the Rebellion's formation while delivering some of television's most compelling character arcs. How Does Andor Enhance the Larger Star Wars Narrative? The hosts explore how Andor doesn't just stand alone but actively enriches the entire Star Wars saga. By connecting seamlessly to Rogue One and A New Hope, the series makes the sacrifices in the original trilogy even more meaningful. The show provides essential context for understanding the Rebellion's origins, showing the personal costs and moral compromises that went into fighting the Empire long before Luke Skywalker entered the picture. What Makes Luthen Such a Complex Character?Luthen embodies the moral complexities at the heart of revolution, raising uncomfortable questions about means and ends. As Matthew notes, the character "troubles me the most, and I think that's the point," drawing comparisons to historical revolutionary figures who employed violent tactics in service of just causes. Luthen's own words resonate throughout the series: "I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them," highlighting the central ethical dilemma facing all resistance movements. The hosts debate whether his methods were justified and how his character forces viewers to question their own moral judgments about real-world resistance movements. How Does the Empire Treat Its Own People? The fate of Imperial officers like Dedra Meero and Partagaz reveals a brutal truth: "You could do everything for the Empire, you could give yourself to it... but in the end, no matter how loyal you are, you're expendable." The hosts discuss how the series brilliantly portrays the Empire's callous treatment of even its most dedicated servants, creating a system where middle-management bullies like Krennic thrive while true believers are discarded when no longer useful. What Legacy Is Left Behind? The final moments of the series spark discussion about how characters' sacrifices ripple through the timeline. As Luthen states in his powerful speech, "I burned my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see," foreshadowing the future that Cassian and others will help create but never witness themselves. The hosts debate the controversial ending for Bix's character and whether it serves the narrative or relies too heavily on common tropes.Other Topics Covered:How K2-SO's introduction creates both comedic moments and surprisingly tense action scenesThe significance of Easter eggs connecting to other Star Wars properties, including RebelsWhether Kleya and Cassian might be siblings, and why making this connection would undermine the storyHow actors delivered Emmy-worthy performances across multiple complex rolesThe perfect execution of Andor as a complete two-season story with clear vision from start to finishWhy Orson Krennic's introduction establishes him as the quintessential Imperial middle-manager bullyThe visual parallels between key scenes in the finale and Rogue One's endingAndor has redefined what Star Wars storytelling can achieve on television, creating a rare series that appeals equally to hardcore fans and newcomers to the galaxy far, far away. By focusing on ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances, the show illuminates the personal costs of resistance while never losing sight of why the fight against tyranny matters—even when victory seems impossible and the path forward requires difficult compromises. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Star Wars Generations, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. What if your fiercest judgments were just misplaced devotion? In this raw and revealing episode, we unpack those charged moments when your love for truth and justice gets mistaken for criticism or control. When your “I just want to help” lands more like “You're doing it wrong.” And when your longing to belong collides with your need to speak up.Two powerful stories unfold in this episode: One about a moment of regret after calling out a fellow trainer in a large group, and another about getting kicked out of a recovery meeting… for being too disruptive. But underneath it all? The same longing: to be seen, heard, and held in our full humanity.
Notes from James:I don't care if you've never written a word before—if you've lived, you have a story worth telling. They're the ones who tell the truth with clarity and heart. In this episode, I show you how to do exactly that. You'll learn how to structure your life story for emotional and commercial impact, and how to weave in other stories, research, and personal growth without losing the power of your own voice.Episode Description:This episode picks up where Part 1: Why You Should Write Your Autobiography left off.
