Today's guest on the Expat Money Show is Jonathan Lockwood, a pro voice over talent originally from Detroit and currently living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He now spends his spare time venturing deep into the Mexican countryside and finding amazing artisanal mezcal.  I enjoyed getting to know Jonathan and you are going to learn a ton from this conversation. TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH JONATHAN: Listen in to hear Jon share the story of how he grew up in an apocalyptic religious cult and how he “woke up” from the brainwashing, which helped him to see that things are not always as they seem. Jon describes how foreseeing the forthcoming fiscal nightmare in the United States led him to explore other options outside of his home country. Hear Jon describe the striking similarities with how politics created divisiveness in families over the last several years to his own experience rejecting the beliefs his family had raised him to hold.  We dig into our shared belief that it's important not to condemn others for being behind where you are at any given moment in life.  Then we discuss how Jon wound up choosing San Miguel de Allende, Mexico as his home, where he now lives with his wife and their daughter.  Learn what Jon views as the surprising advantage of living in a country with an extremely inefficient government.  Jon relays a hilarious experience he had when he first attempted to speak Spanish upon arriving in Mexico - he had me stitches! We discuss the concept of “stacking freedom” as opposed to trying to find a “Shangri-La”, and how not to become paralyzed by the fear of making the wrong decision. Jon goes into detail describing the “melting pot” city of San Miguel de Allende, and how the locals have responded to the always-growing expat community there. You'll be wanting to book your trip to San Miguel after hearing this! Then we discuss how Jonathan developed a passion for artisanal Mezcal that he sources from “the Disneyland of Mezcal” in Oaxaca, Mexico. I learned so much about Mezcal that I never knew before! Growing up in Saginaw, Michigan as a third-generation Jehovah's Witness, Jonathan Lockwood began a career in radio at the tender age of seventeen. In middle age, he now resides in the town of San Miguel De Allende, Mexico with his beautiful wife and family. My folks live there, too! And I look foward to Cigar Fridays with Jon & co every time I visit! In this very special episode of the AVMPC, we delve deep into how Jonathan left the JW's in his mid-thirties, why he had decided to stay non-union, why he became a Libertarian, how smoothly he transitioned from radio producer to full-time voice talent, studying with Nancy Wolfson, why he hesitates to give 'advice' to young voice talent, and the one piece of advice he can deliver in full confidence that you're unlikely to get from ANYbody else... This week’s episode features not two, but three conservative firebrands who take an aggressive approach to getting their message out. My first guest is Kyle Reyes, who founded Whiskey Patriots and serves as the spokesman for Law Enforcement Today. I first came across Kyle in 2018 when I wrote about his high school alma mater refusing to let him speak at a dedication ceremony for a new memorial at the school, for the sin of being conservative. Kyle has a large national following, and the school squandered an opportunity for wide positive news coverage, because the students supposedly would be afraid of the mere presence of a conservative. Kyle and I talk about the current state of affairs in our country, what the organized Left is doing to undermine our society, and the lies that propel the movement to tear down America. Kyle also recorded a bonus segment exclusively for our Patreon patrons. He gives us even more conservative red meat, expanding on the theme of electing more people at all levels of government who still believe in our core constitutional beliefs. Subscribers get access to this kind of exclusive material and many other features. Check it out at patreon.com/BehindTheCurtainWithJeffReynolds. My second, Oregon centered segment this week is a bit of a departure. Yesterday I released a bonus episode with an interview with Kim Sordyl, talking about the Oregon Secretary of State’s office. If you missed it, you really should check it out. Anyway, I have two guests this week who are allies of Kim’s. My original intent with this episode was to have a roundtable discussion with two prominent gay conservatives in Oregon, Jonathan Lockwood and Ben West. Well, as John Lennon put it, life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans, and the discussion idea fell through due to scheduling problems. I recorded separate segments with Jonathan and Ben, with the idea of talking to them about being gay and conservative in Oregon, and what they face from the left and the right while taking that position. These were two fascinating conversations. Don’t forget to subscribe to the Behind the Curtain podcast wherever you listen to it, and please leave a positive rating. The more subscribers and the better ratings, the higher Behind the Curtain will rank on podcast services like iTunes and Google Podcasts, among MANY OTHERS. I’m happy to report that my book continues to generate buzz. It’s called Behind the Curtain: Inside the Network of Progressive Billionaires and their Campaign to Undermine Democracy. This weekend, I will be signing copies and hosting a cigar happy hour at the Dorchester Conference, which is being held in Welches, Oregon this year. Search for it in stores, or online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Simon and Schuster. It’s available in hardback, Kindle, or Nook Now. In my first segment, I talk with Star Parker, who hung out with me at the Oregon Freedom Fest to talk about her organization, The Center for Urban Renewal and Education. Star is a natural story teller and a very engaging guest. She talked frankly about her life prior to Christian conversion in which she used abortion like birth control, and her life after her conversion. She got a degree, she opened a business, she lost that business in the 1992 riots in LA, and she became a fierce advocate for welfare reform. She tells of the security threats she's faced for daring to challenge the liberal orthodoxy, she describes converting inner city pastors to free market ideals, she talks about biblical property rights, and she works tirelessly to eradicate the victimhood mentality. You can find Star on Twitter at @UrbanCure, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/UrbanCURE, and on the web at urbancure.org. For my second segment, I sat down with Jonathan Lockwood, Oregon's bomb-throwing Republican communications strategist. He pushes back on the idea that telling the truth is akin to throwing bombs, and addresses the controversy surrounding the press release last week by his boss, Senator Dennis Linthicum, which used the death of Eric Garner to argue against new cigarette taxes in Oregon. We discuss messaging, strategy, and how Republicans can reach voters in blue Oregon. We also discuss all the horrible laws coming to Oregon courtesy of the Democratic supermajorities in both houses of the legislature. Are You Willing to Abandon Your Sacred Cows at Any Age? Leaving the Jehovah’s Witness Cult and Your Own Family at 38. It’s often the case that we assume any major revelations and paradigms shifts must happen very early in life before our mindsets solidify. Jonathan Lockwood, a world-renowned voiceover artist and lover of premium Mexican mescal, was raised a Jehovah’s Witness. Despite being a reasonably intelligent man, he even became a cult elder at age 29. For some reason, at age 38 he decided it was all kind of bullshit and weaned himself away from the only social structure he had ever known. With the exception of his 17-year-old daughter, he was excommunicated from his entire family and most of his friends. Now at age 50, he feels mentally youthful and ready to question every remaining foundational belief in his own mind. Join our uncomfortable conversation, as we delve into the origins of cognitive dissonance and why people will defend pre-existing beliefs to the death before ever questioning why they think the way they do. Jon will also share his personal experiences with ayahuasca and other plant-based psychedelics, including how they have helped open his mind to new ways of thinking about things even relatively late in life. What unconscious beliefs lie at the base of your worldview? What would it take for you to completely reevaluate your life at any age?
