Today I sat down with Vanessa Beaumont, a former literary agent and novelist about her debut novel The Other Side of Paradise which follows Jean Buckman, a young American newspaper heiress, who arrives in London in the glittering 1920s, and evolves throughout the story, through personal tragedy and loss. Over the course of the story, we watch her grapple with the pressures of mid-Century society on a woman, what it means to do one's duty, and the pull of desire in the face of it all. It's kind of a Downtown Abbey meets Francis Scott Fitzgerald, with a modern feminist perspective As always, Vanessa picked the four books which have had the biggest impact on her as both a reader and a writer, and we also discussed her career trajectory. Before publishing The Other Side of Paradise, Vanessa spent 8 years as a Commissioning Editor at Short Books, and co-founded and ran a literary agency, so it was fascinating to get some insights from that. It was such a great conversation, and as always, such a pleasure talking with Vanessa. Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Vanessa Beaumont's four books were: Little Women, Louisa May Alcott (1868) The Age of Innocence, Edith Wharton (1920) Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh (1945) Tender is the Night, F Scott Fitzgerald (1934)

These are, without a doubt, the best short books ever written! In our opinion. We all love the feeling of accomplishment when you finish a huge 1,000 tome, but honestly, sometimes you just want to rip through a book without feeling like it's dragging on forever! That's why there's short books and novellas! In this episode Andy and I break down our favorite short books and what we love about them. While many new authors today may be writing short novels because they take less time to write, and people have shorter and shorter attention spans, writing a thought provoking and memorable short book can be tough. Consider that the author has fewer pages to pack their narrative punch. So if you're looking for a great short book, consider one of the books on this list! He also compares the work's thematical elements to The Deuce, a TV Show that Pelecanos co-created with David Simon, which explores the passage of time and the evolution of communities. Owning Up consists of four vignettes that tackle issues such as racism, the criminal justice system, the interconnectedness of history, and near misses of life. Here are some of the best novellas I read in 2023. While I am on the hunt for books on my shelf I have not read yet, I thought novellas would be a good bet. Turns out, I've nearly read them all! Not a mystery as to why; they are great and short easy reads. Looking for something to read in an afternoon? Here we are. In the meantime, be sure to check out the new amusement park horror, Carni by R. Saint Claire! https://amzn.to/3sSt6ch as mentioned! In horror literature, novellas are perfect additions to any collection. Their short and digestible length make them perfect for one sitting, giving readers instant immersion into chilling narratives. Novellas serve as a nuanced introduction to an author's style, allowing enthusiasts to traverse the macabre landscapes of renowned talents without having to invest time or money into a whole novel. Shorter work used to be more popular in previous centuries, and horror novellas emerge once again as new treasures, with a new-found literary sophistication, in my opinion, and offering enthusiasts a swift yet profound journey into the realms of dread. ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Bookworm decor is here! https://shop.typicalbooks.com/ ▹ All socials, the shop and news: https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever ▹ Read books I wrote: https://amzn.to/3k20OY6 ▹ A list of horror books out each month: https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror ▹ Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/shop/typicalbooks to shop local! ▹ Music by ænorex: https://aenorex.com As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. "When we're talking about Do Deal, we're really talking about the verb of how you deal with people... as an ongoing kind of living thing." Richard Hoare didn't set out to become an expert on negotiation. In fact his first attempt at negotiation, when he was offered a poorly paid first job in the music industry involved, he admits, no negotiation at all. But after a career at the top of legal services in the music industry he's learned a thing or two, and recognized the need for a short, straightforward book that set out the principles of successful negotiation in a way that anyone could grasp and use.  Spoiler alert: It's not about getting your own way, it's about uncovering value and nurturing relationships. And because it was written with a co-author, the book involved some negotiation along the way itself. In this week's conversation Richard shares his tactics for writing collaboratively, and indeed writing at all alongside a busy work schedule, together with some practical and profound insights on the art of the (better) deal.
