In A Psalm for the Wild-Built ,Becky Chambers invites readers into a serene, post-collapse world where a wandering tea monk named Dex crosses paths with a curious robot, sparking a journey of introspection and philosophical wonder. Together, they explore what it means to be content, connected, and truly alive in a world that has learned to live gently. My guest this week is Emily James, a marketing strategist who moved to Richmond 15 years ago to attend VCU and forgot to leave after graduation. Growing up, she always had her nose in a book and rediscovered her love of reading as an adult thanks to the pandemic, motherhood, and the Libby app. When she's not lost in a good story, you can find her watching reality TV, playing tabletop games, or spending time with her family. Our protagonist, Dex, is a tea monk who makes teas personalized for whoever they are helping, so our drink this week is tea—whatever your favorite version may be. Pour a mug, relax, and take a break listening to this amazing episode! Imagine a world where not only did humans turn things around and not destroy the planet, but we also managed to peacefully co-exist with sentient robots and allowed them to go off and do their own thing? In this month's book, A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers, a tea serving monk, Sibling Dex, goes on a journey and meets a robot, Mosscap, who has not been seen for hundreds of years. Together, they try to answer the question all robots have for humanity, “ “what do people need?” The philosophical questions it raises fill the lion's share of this short yet thoughtful book.Host: Eugene StephensGuest: Kris Andrew, Ray Andrew, Joseph Moroles, Jennifer HetzelLike the show? In the countdown to the season finale, Stephen and Mark stray from the path of horror into a subtle and delighfully complex scifi story about a monk, a robot, and the questions perhaps everyone should be asking of themselves and each other. A subtle and complex tale deserves a subtle and complex bourbon paired with it, and this episode is no exception as our co-hosts sample Blade & Bow for the first time. NOTE: In this episode, Stephen and Mark both struggle with pronoun usage for the characters.  We decided to leave this in rather than edit and re-record.  We felt the struggle to get it right and failing (multiple times) without giving up was all too appropriate for the messages and themes of the story.  No one can ever be perfect, but the pursuit of being better and kinder to each other and ourselves is worth the awkwardness of the journey.

Hello! This week, we talk about the big Polyamory article in New York Magazine and the proposition that breaking the bonds of monogamy might be a political statement, one that frees both sides from the constraints of marriage. Are we just reinventing ways to justify selfish behavior? And why does every personal decision in the lives of upper middle class, well-educated people need to turn into some movement that promises nothing? We also continue our ongoing talk about visions of the climate future with a conversation about “Psalm for the Wild Built” by Becky Chambers, which, in turn, led to a longer conversation about surf movies and Tyler's hobby of fishing at 3 AM in a wetsuit in the cold unruly waters of coastal Maine. Hello! In today's episode, we talk about Octavia Butler's “The Parable of the Sower,” a science fiction novel from 1992 that unexpectedly found itself on the best seller's list in 2020. The novel imagines a violent and grim future in which the world has warmed beyond safe inhabitation, the lucky get to live in walled off communities while the poor all kill one another in the streets. We talk about visions of climate apocalypse and how Butler, through no fault of her own, might have created a hegemonic vision of a warmed earth, one that has become almost cliche in the thirty years since Sower's publication. Why don't we have other, new visions for climate death? What would those even look like? We also get a bit into a recent article in The Atlantic about Butler and her use of “historofuturism” in her work. And we talk a bit about the state of the Black quarterback and muse on why Lamar Jackson might get a more traditional, sports-talk-racist treatment than other Black quarterbacks in the league. We will be continuing our look into extinction literature next week with a look at Becky Chambers's “A Psalm for the Wild-Built.” If you'd like to read it before the show, please do so!
