This poor dude might've actually done less damage had he just been left the hell alone. Sure they say the pen is mightier than the sword, but Jose Rizal seemed content to let sleeping Spaniards lie once he found out how much trouble he was in. Unfortunately, the people around him would force his environments to change, and his life to be forever altered. Join us as we delve into the further life of Jose Rizal, author of "El Filibusterismo", and how he almost certainly did not bang Hitler's mom or kill all those prostitutes.
Sometimes you gotta be the change you wanna see in the world. And sometimes, you gotta piss off a whole lot of people to do it. Join us as we talk about the early life of the Philippines' foremost national hero, Jose Rizal, as well as his terrible finances, his bad housemate manners, and which side of his pants he hung his hog. Salamat!

Metro Manila Film Festival Best Director awardee for the film “Gomburza,” Pepe Diokno, shares his surprise at how a serious movie about history has drawn mainstream audiences. He talks to Howie about researching how the idea of a Filipino nation was born and how faithfully his movie tries to portray history. They discuss the challenge of dramatizing historical events without battlefield heroes and the need to set the record straight about what happened in the 1872 Cavite Mutiny which led to the martyrdom of the three priests Gomes, Burgos and Zamora. The executions inspired Jose Rizal's life work. Pepe addresses the Majoha reality-show brouhaha sympathetically and what it says about the way history is taught. Howie asks him how coming from the illustrious Diokno family influences his choice of subject. “Gomburza” is the 36-year-old Pepe's first film in eight years, after a period of self-doubt about his career. Audience response in recent weeks seems to have restored his faith.

Rizal's impact was so enormous that he became a popular cultural product himself. In this episode, we talk about one particular media where Rizal has become the usual focus: movies. The centenary of the Philippine Revolution in 1996 led to some of the most popular Rizal movies in recent memory: Jose Rizal: Ang Buhay ng Isang Bayani (1996), Rizal sa Dapitan (1997), Jose Rizal (1998), and Bayaning Third World (1999). Filipinos in Canberra celebrated Harmony Day by commemorating the life and works of Dr Jose Rizal.
This chapter was juicy! We were truly guided by Michael Gonzalez' words and 8 years of thesis research investigating the said debatable, 2 existing and paradoxical stories of the legendary Jose Rizal. Jose Rizal is formally known as a native reformist, physician, author of books-- a “renaissance man”, that was falsely implicated in an anti-colonial revolutionary plot and executed by the colonial Spanish authorities on December 30, 1896. Gonzalez' work included understanding the national “official”, sometimes imaginary Jose Rizal; versus the perhaps “unofficial”/folklore (said to be told my peasants, laborers, and middle class Filipinos) version of Jose Rizal, deemed by the “Rizalistas”. Rizalistas, a conglomeration of various groups (or sects) scattered all over the Philippines that see Rizal and the events surrounding his life as distinctly spiritual, sacred, and personal. Among some of these associations are the Sagrada Familiar, Watawat ng Lahi, Tres Persona Solo Dios, and the Kataastaasang Kapatiran Ng Litaw Na Katalinuhan. These groups have inconspicuous small churches and sanctuaries that dot the rural landscape along the Laguna and Quezon (Aurora) Provinces. In addition, this chapter was rife with information on the transformation of the Philippine national anthem with colonization within the Philippines, which we discuss briefly. Another potential theory to consider through Gonzalez' writing, was the idea to consider if Jose Rizal was actually the pre-colonial Philippines interpretation of Jesus!?! Gonzalez felt like this concept along with his other works, lit a way for our Filipina/o/x cultural memory to keep unfolding, waiting to be retrieved and revealed for more research, theories, and perhaps action, to come. --------------------- 1.
