While there are some promising changes such as mandatory cooling, weather seals and better insulation, there are also some major gaps. To help us better understand these amendments to rental standards, we were joined by Sophie Emder, Senior Community Campaigner with Sweltering Cities. Sweltering Cities is a health NGO that works directly with people in hot suburbs and homes to campaign for more liveable, equitable and sustainable cities. If you'd like to have your say on minimum rental standards in Victoria, add your voice to Sweltering Cities' submission here or write your own via the Engage Victoria portal.// Kate Fitz Gibbon is an international research leader in the area of domestic and family violence, femicide, responses to all forms of violence against women and children, perpetrator interventions, and the impacts of policy and practice reform in Australia and internationally. Today, Kate joined us to discuss new research examining the merits and limits of domestic violence disclosure schemes (DVDS) in so-called Australia and Aotearoa.// MJ, working at Sisters Inside and a member of the National Network of Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls, spoke with us about unequal access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for people in custody and on remand. While it can be extremely challenging for people who have not already been granted access to funding under the scheme to complete an application in custody, MJ explained the barriers that people inside face when it comes to accessing already approved NDIS-funded supports. MJ is a formerly incarcerated Aeta woman and is committed to ending the criminalisation of women and girls.// Māori and Irish political organiser Te Raukura O'Connell Rapira joined us on the show to break down the New Zealand government's attempt to erode Māori representation in local government via an attack on the Māori ward system. Te Raukura is a lead claimant in the urgent Waitangi Tribunal inquiry into this significant legislative move by the NZ government to undermine Māori political voice.// Songs//Party Tricks - Alice Skye//
"When the Spanish colonization of the Philippines began in 1565, early reports boasted of mass conversions to Christianity and ever-increasing numbers of people paying tribute to the Spanish crown. This suggests an uncomplicated story of an easy imposition of Spanish sovereignty. But as Stephanie Mawson shows in her book, Incomplete Conquests: The Limits of Spanish Empire in the Seventeenth-Century Philippines (Cornell UP, 2023), the Spanish colonization of the Philippines was contested at every step, went on for centuries, and in many respects remained incomplete. Mawson tells the story of the diverse peoples who resisted Spanish colonization, in some cases for over 300 years. These included the “fugitives, apostates, and rebels, Chinese laborers, Moro slave raiders, native priestesses, Aeta headhunters, Pampangan woodcutters, and many others...
KuyaChris & Friends - The Filipino Garage - A Filipino American Perspective
Raquel Calara is a student organizer currently majoring in Social Welfare at UC Berkeley. She is the SHADOW Coordinator for Pilipinx Academic Student Services (PASS) and is also one of this year's Pilipinx Cultural Night co-producers. This last summer, she traveled to the Philippines with Kabataan Alliance for a community immersion trip where she visited striking workers, fisherfolk communities, indigenous Aeta groups, and activist organizations. In this episode, she reflects on the significance of this trip—being only the 2nd time she's been in the Philippines—and the various takeaways she's gotten from the experience. She explores the implications of the striking NutriAsia workers, the importance and relevance of activism, and the shifts this trip has had on her future trajectory as both a student and community organizer. There's also a lot of reflections about growing up as a Filipina in the United States, the initial distancing from her culture, and the rediscovery and acceptance of identity while in college.

Kevyn Lorenza just came back from his first trip in the Philipines! He was able to visit different communities in Luzon and Mindanao, with the specific goal of learning about the education system and the struggles of the various sectors in the country. Our local hosts in the Philippines were PSET and Salupongan International. We talk about the shifting educational system with K-12, the problems in indigenous communities, and the exposure to martial law in Mindanao.

This is a great show! We feature an interview with Amie Breeze Harper about her Sistah Vegan Anthology. Amie is a Masters Student at Harvard University EXT. She is focusing her Master's Thesis research on a project called Cyberterritories of Whiteness: Language, 'Colorblind' Utopias, and Sistah Vegan Consciousness. Amie was motivated by the negative responses that a PeTA Campaign comparing slavery, women's suffrage and the Holocaust to animal oppression drew on an African American oriented message board. Amie felt that what she saw "wasn't offensive but was in fact captivating and thought provoking, inducing critical consciousness engagement in viewers to question their own normative practices." She decided to start interviewing black identified vegan females for an anthology that she hopes "will be an effective literary model that will show the Black community (as well as all people) the health and environmental/ecological benefits of strongly considering veganism as a practice that simultaneously resists institutionalized racism and other legacies of slavery and colonialism."Our musical guest is Matana Roberts, a saxophonist and composer who tries to expose in her music the mystical roots and spiritual traditions of African American creative expression. Matana is a contributor to the Sistah Vegan Anthology. We have an intro audio clip from the recent "blessing of the animals" at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. Finally, we are interviewing Rocky Shepherd who runs a web site called Stop AETA. AETA is an acronym for the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act which is an abominable new legislation which was snuck through the US Senate just before they went on vacation and will go to the House of Representatives in November when they reconvene. This bill would make even the mildest non-violent protests into possible acts of "terrorism" punishable by severe jail sentences. Rocky gives us an overview of the act and ideas on how to stop this encroachment on our civil liberties and First Amendment rights before it is too late.
