Caitilin, his daughter, obtained her Master's degree from San Francisco State University in 2023. 127: “That's part of my calling as an artist; going with the flow of how the world changes through storytelling.” Broadway performing, life pivots, & choosing curiosity over shame with Jesca Prudencio This conversation is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/xCMLYFf2ZcE (https://youtu.be/xCMLYFf2ZcE) From sharing her director's process as “the strategic artist” to working through a recent divorce, Jesca Prudencio implores us all to lead life with curiosity. “I always start with a question.” Raised by a mom & dad who supported her dreams of being in the performing arts from a young age, Jesca learned to follow her heart in order to turn those dreams into her reality. She started her career at age 5, performing Filipino cultural dances for community events. She would later grow up to travel the world to create her own media, teach & become an inspiration to her student artists. In 2021, she was named Woman To Watch on Broadway by the Broadway Woman's Fund. *congratulatory snaps!* Reflecting back on how she got to where she is today, she outlines how she's learned to be patient with herself, allowing herself the time needed to contextualize her circumstances. She also emphasizes the power of community, and how in her darkest moments, they were the ones to carry her back into the light. 125: “When you find authenticity & kindness in a person, keep them close.” Drive thru balut, Filipinos in show business, and turning childhood dreams into cathartic professional opportunities with Emy Coligado This conversation is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/xytpYt2mBMY (https://youtu.be/xytpYt2mBMY) Dog mom, Actress & Executive Producer Emy Coligado tells her story; a girl who leaves her hometown in Borger, TX to pursue her childhood dream in the performing arts in the Big Apple. Fast forward to today, Emy has secured a decorated resume for herself including the show that inspired it all - Miss Saigon - in the Broadway company. Bringing it back full circle, she recently finished filming & producing one of her favorite projects yet, titled ‘The Girl Who Left Home', that features a plot emulating one of the most difficult times she's had to face in real life: the loss of her dad. Playing the role of the nanay in a Filipino-lead film offered her a unique, cathartic opportunity to work through her grief. She dedicates this pride point in her life to her late father, and considers it an homage to her mother. Emy shares the beauty of Filipinos in show business, and explains why the quality of your community is more important than its quantity. Learn more about Emy & her work at https://www.emycoligado.com/ (https://www.emycoligado.com/) or catch her on Instagram/YouTube @emycoligado. Enhancing culture in your local community and practicing respectful assertiveness with Dr. Abby Hamilton This interview is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/kRqRuyD3alY (https://youtu.be/kRqRuyD3alY) Dr. Abby Hamilton, also known as "Dr. Abby," is an Industrial and Organizational Psychologist, Higher Education Director, and Vice Chairman of the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc. She gives us a snapshot of her life in Tampa, FL, what it was like being raised as the daughter of a bishop, performing with a government sponsored dance troupe, a college experience that made her more fired up to be a proud Filipina, and much more. Dr. Abby also shares her research on the relationship between Filipino culture and assertiveness, which showed that higher Filipino culture is related to lower assertiveness. 119: "It's important to hear that you matter." Cultural alignment, making mental health accessible, & bringing Fil-Ams back to the Philippines with Melody Agbisit This interview is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/m94QyHuS2OE (https://youtu.be/m94QyHuS2OE) Melody Agbisit learned self-advocacy from a young age, and felt compelled to help her peers do the same. Now as a therapist & educator of over 10 years, social entrepreneur & writer, she's able to drive her efforts into full-force. She bases her practice & intentions around the Filipino tradition, Hilot, which encompasses all aspects of one's health (physical, spiritual & mental) in order to identify healing solutions, setting itself apart from other Western forms of counseling. Melody shares her experience touring all over Asia to give mental health trainings to all types of organizations, and reminds us all that “we're more than our minds, bodies, & spirits - we're an integration of all those things.” To learn more about Melody, connect with her on Instagram @MeloMahalo -- For a replay of Jen's Keynote Speech for Vets2Industry: https://youtu.be/0XzFSrkjFBg (https://youtu.be/0XzFSrkjFBg) LOVE OUR SHOW? 117: "There's not one way to be Filipino. My feeling of belonging is based on wherever I am now with myself.” Sampling cultures, land acknowledgments, & the somatic effects of culture shock with Magdalena Valderrama Rural resident, Co-Founder & Development Director of the Seigler Springs Community Redevelopment Association, and meditation community elder Magdalena Valderrama sits down with co-hosts Jen & Nani to share her diplomatic family's migration story from the Philippines to the U.S., and how her & her four siblings' different interpretations of their shared experience has translated into the diverse collection of identities they hold today. In her story, she learns to overcome the initial waves of culture shock & grows a unique appreciation for New York's wide range of (specifically non-Filipino) hyphenated Americans, who she later realizes would play an essential role in teaching her about her own history as a Filipino American. The confrontations Magdalena has faced in learning her cultural history have pushed her into a lifelong practice of accepting herself as she is, over & over again. In reflecting on her life's journey, she asks us all to consider we're more than what we look like; and as we contemplate that mystery of existence, to take note of where our happiness truly comes from.
