“The complex is simple and the simple is complex” Welcome to The Parenting Well Podcast. I'm Dr. Shelly Mahon, your host, and today's conversation is with Mark Talaga. Mark hosts the podcast Hopelessly Gifted, a deeply personal and thought-provoking exploration of intelligence, identity, achievement, and emotional well-being. Through candid storytelling and hard-earned insight, Mark examines what it means to grow up labeled as “gifted” and the pressures, expectations, and emotional complexities that often come with that label. Drawing from his own experiences, Mark challenges the assumption that gifted children naturally thrive. Instead, he highlights the hidden struggles many high-achieving kids face, including perfectionism, anxiety, isolation, burnout, and the difficulty of developing resilience when achievement becomes tied to self-worth. Mark's work resonates with parents, educators, and anyone raising children in achievement-oriented environments. His perspective offers a compassionate reminder that emotional health, curiosity, character, and connection matter just as much as academic success. #resilience #positiveyouthdevelopment #braindevelopment #practicaltips In this podcast, we talk about: The impact of labeling kids Understanding where children are either ahead or behind developmentally so you can address gaps Ways in which gifted children are misunderstood The impact of giftedness on perfectionism, anxiety, identity development, and resilience Early signs of giftedness Behaviors kids exhibit when they need additional support A systemic approach to helping children thrive The difference between skill development and psychology Aligning with larger systems like schools to advocate for your child The importance of curiosity, connection, and play Resources Podcast: Hopelessly Gifted LinkedIn Center for Identity Potential

His research interests have revolved around premodern European martial traditions, with particular focus on late medieval, Central European and the so-called German School of fighting. His goal is to elevate HEMA studies into a legitimate field of research within academic history and archaeology. Maciej is a member of HEMAtac, a HEMA coaching organization, and is a qualified Olympic fencing instructor in the Polish Fencing Association. He also runs the Sprechfenster blog on Patreon. Guy first came across Maciej's work through his article Probing the Depth of Medieval European Body Culture: Preliminary Research on Methods of Physical Training, 1250 to 1500. We talk about how Maciej got into historical martial arts, and a bit of background of the development of the HEMA scene in Poland. Both Maciej and Guy have experience of sport fencing, and we talk about how sport fencing coaching techniques can be beneficial in training historical fencing, giving you a framework for understanding concepts in historical fencing. Maciej sees HEMA as a grand project, with tournaments having a key place within this project. We discuss the benefits of the competitive environment, how it affects your training, and how it reveals the differences between what's in the fight books and how we practice sword fighting today. Guy talks himself into getting back into tournament fencing – for seniors only, mind you. We also discuss the topic of Maciej's article about medieval European body culture. What sports did people do, how did they train? What sources do we have to prove what people did? Tanya Talaga is an award-winning author and journalist and a powerful voice for Indigenous rights and education in Canada. She's also a constituent, which is how we happened to connect again recently when she was hosted by the House Speaker together with other finalists for the Shaugnessy Cohen Prize in political writing.Talaga joined me a number of years ago at the Fox Theatre to talk about her 2017 award-winning book Seven Fallen Feathers. This conversation focuses on her recent book, The Knowing. It is a deeply personal story in which she traces her own family's history, and it is a story of Indigenous people in Canada, injustice, reclamation, and outlasting. With her own background one of both Anishinaabe and Polish descent, Talaga writes: “From the legacies of these dual branches of genocide, one on Turtle Island and one far off in eastern Europe - comes my knowing.”I recommend reading the book and you can also watch her docuseries at CBC Gem. Psychologists warn that the use of tracking apps can normalise constant monitoring, which may start in families but spill into intimate partner relationships, potentially leading to controlling and coercive behaviours. But how do we know if tracking those we love is beneficial or problematic?
While many hay fever sufferers claim that certain hacks helped them relieve pesky symptoms, we asked the opinion of an expert if these popular tricks work or have been proven by studies.
