Many families find themselves in the position of wanting their baby to be fed breastmilk, but not being able to breastfeed. This might be known ahead of time due to adoption or surrogacy, or it might be unplanned after breastfeeding doesn't work out for you. There is often shame and internalized judgement surrounding the difficult decision to stop breastfeeding. And many parents think that formula is the only alternative to breastfeeding. Sharing breastmilk, formally through a milk bank or informally through your community, is a great option for families who want their babies to have the benefits that breastmilk provides without being able to produce milk themselves. In this conversation Kelly Cox shares with us about her app, Share the Drop, that offers parents a place to find breastmilk in their communities and create ongoing relationships to help feed their babies. Every parent who wants an alternative to formula should listen to this conversation. We talk about creating a feeding plan for your family, the safety of breastmilk sharing, and how to create a successful, shame-free approach to feeding your baby.Start your BeHerVillage registry.Subscribe to The BeHerVillage Podcast and never miss an episode. As a registered prenatal yoga teacher and birth doula, Kelly Cox has supported thousands of families through pregnancy, birth and parenthood. In her yoga studio, families connected over the trials and tribulations of pre/postpartum bodies, sleep training, partner relationships and of course, infant feeding. Taking note of her clients' emotional well being, Kelly realized that feeding newborns created a wave of stress, pressure and often led to postpartum depression. She has held weekly free lactation support groups and regularly helps match local families with an excess supply of milk to families in need. And as a breast cancer survivor, she gives particular attention to fellow survivors sourcing milk for their infants. Within this candid conversation, she shares: why "selfish" isn't a four-letter word and how finally allowing herself self-care supported her through many levels of grief and surviving cancer; the importance of community, connecting with others, and expressing how you feel about someone; and the incredible work she dedicates her days to, as a founder of the breast milk-sharing app: Share the Drop. In this episode I interview Dr Kelly Cox, an Illinois based E.R. physician. He shares how he helps patients by preventing illness instead of just treating its final consequences. We discuss how we should learn about our mind and how it works, how every thought we have affects how we live, eat, drink, become addicted, lose sleep etc. he then shares some valuable lessons on living a more mindful life - with much lower stress and with conscious, healthier choices. #mindsetmatters #PreventionIsBetterThanCure #stopsmoking #sleepwell

Kelly Cox does what she wants. That’s a quote from Portland Magazine, and our hosts get Kelly to explain exactly what that means. For the past five years, Kelly has traveled the globe seeking the origin of the best food ingredients as the content of her award-winning series, The Original Fare on PBS. As her website says, she has done everything from plucking tea leaves in Sri Lanka to hunting seals on ice floats off Newfoundland, sharing the experiences with the public. The mission is to find where food comes from and understanding the work and culture that goes into producing food ingredients. The show is part travel, part food but mostly the people behind the food, showing our commonalities and our difference. There’s another reason for Kelly’s drive. She works with young women around the world with common initiatives, Girl Power and Gender Equality. In 2014, she made her debut as a film director with Big Dream, a show that follows seven ambitious young women around the world who stop at nothing to achieve their big dream. It’s available on Amazon. Portland, Oregon is Kelly’s home base and there is a strong connection and support, especially with our host Sarah Marshall. And when COVID lockdown hit, Kelly realized that an international program such as Original Fare was going to come to a halt when there was no international traveling! She then turned her focus locally for projects, which had mixed results, so she and her husband moved in with her parents in California. Now that odyssey has taken them with her parents to Idaho, where they are currently still treading the COVID waters. What’s next? There are a couple of wild acres on the property, so Kelly has taken to starting her own ambitious garden and also growing a chicken flock, for fresh eggs. Not surprisingly, Kelly’s life reflects her show. It’s Original. This week we review a work that aimed to improve the thoughtfulness of echocardiography usage in the postoperative period after congenital heart surgery. Dr. Kelly Cox and colleagues report on the use of a 'checklist' type 'pause' aimed at making certain that the ordering team in the CVICU are making an informed decision regarding the need for a new echocardiogram. How often should postoperative studies be performed? How often did the 'fluid check' actually show fluid? These are amongst the many questions we post to Professor Cox who presently works at Lurie Children's Hospital - Northwestern University. doi: 10.1111/echo.1450
