Networking: you either love it or you hate it. But is it really a necessary skill?Joe Sweeney thinks so. In fact, he's built a career around coaching others on the power of networking. Through his insights, entrepreneurs have built successful businesses, individuals have achieved their career goals, and professional athletes have multiplied their reach. We sat down with the New York Times best-selling author, executive coach and speaker to understand networking - what it is, what it isn't, and how educators, students and employers can build their networks and achieve their goals. In this episode:Why so many people hate networking - and the one perspective shift that will change your mindThe four-step process to building relationshipsHow to make asking fun (and how this technique got Bob Costas to come to Milwaukee)What educators should say when asking employers to support their programWhat students need to know before they start networkingAnd much more! Don't forget to check out the resources at the bottom of this page for more from Joe Sweeney.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:The #1 success tool in business? Relationships. Forget what you know about networking (the pressure to give away all your business cards or collect as many as possible...). Joe shares a single perspective shift around what networking truly is. Once you understand the purpose of networking, you'll build stronger, more valuable connections that will bring you success in life and work. The four-step process to networking: You'll have to listen to the episode to hear the four steps, but remember this: the process is simple, but it's not easy. There will certainly be roadblocks and challenges in the way, but Joe shares some examples on how to work through them using the four steps.Educators, ask yourself: what's in it for the employer? When building vital education-industry partnerships, often each party is primarily concerned with their own needs. Instead, approach the partnership by seeking to understand what the other will get out of it. Educators - if you need support from employers, make it clear what they will get in return.ResourcesMore about the Bob Costas and Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame story: https://onmilwaukee.com/articles/1995sportshallTo learn more about Joe Sweeney, visit his website: https://joesweeney.com/Networking Is a Contact Sport (Amazon)Moving the Needle (Amazon)After Further Review (Amazon)A Light Shines Through Us (Amazon)Connect with Joe Sweeney on social media:Twitter  |  LinkedIn  |  FacebookEpisode page: https://techedpodcast.com/sweeney/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

"Will the robots replace us? The future is very hard to predict, but we're very adaptive." It's a wrap! This is our last episode on our mini-series on 'The Future of Work." In our survey "Parenting, Education, and The Future of Work," we asked parents about their worries and concerns as well as their hopes for their children in the future workplace. "Job crafting is something we should be teaching to school students. How do I craft my job in the smallest way to maximise my purpose in life?" Do you worry about your children's ability to thrive in the future workplace? In the survey that my co-host for this podcast series Dr. Joe Sweeney ran to give us some juicy data for our conversations, an overwhelming 79% of parents answered 'YES' to that very question. Understandably, a key concern that came up was about job security for our future workforce. Parents are asking: Will my kids have the same secure work experience that I had or will their life be constantly adapting, changing jobs, scrambling to find employment? To answer this question, Joe and I embarked on a conversation about "the dynamic nature of the future of work" and the skills that kids (and all of us) will need as the nature of work changes into the future. And because the joy of podcast conversations is that they are rarely linear, we also explore: The purpose of purpose at work and the role that employers can play in helping us to thrive at work through social contribution Why it's important that we get involved in policy making to make the future what we want it to be Motivation and the mechanisms that drive it The top, timeless skillsets we need to cultivate in our children for them to thrive in the future including communicating effectively, empathy, stress management, complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity and self-regulation. Neurodiversity, where it works well at work and while we're all neurodiverse in some ways. The importance of understanding yourself and others for thriving at work Tips on the activities parents can engage in with their kids in to enhance the necessary skillsets. "Hope, in the psychological sense, is a combination of pathways and agency. What we're doing is creating HOPE. " Welcome to our new podcast series: "The Future of Work", with guest expert Dr. Joe Sweeney. I'm really excited about this series as not only do I get to talk to a great friend of the show, but he and his team have done some very cool research with parents to explore their hopes and worries when it comes to future employment for our kids. The extensive survey work that Joe has done informs our discussion. It's research in action and makes for a great conversation. A bit about Doc Joe. Joe is first and foremost an educator, but he is also a technologist, advisor, writer, game designer, and an expert in workforce transformation. His particular area of interest is around pathways to employment, which makes him the perfect co-host for this podcast series exploring the future of work. He's been on the Potential Psychology Podcast twice before, once in episode 17 in which we talk about "Kids, Education and The Future of Work" and in episode 79 where we talk about "The Perks and Pitfalls of Working From Home." What worries parents about the future of work for kids?11 The importance of hope for dealing with an unknown and rapidly changing world - and what does 'hope' really mean? Why, and how, parents should be involved in the education of their children, and How can we create real opportunities for our kids to thrive despite upcoming challenges? Are you a hunter or a fisherman? Hunting prey makes it run away, but fish come to the fisherman. But, wait—what does this have to do with networking and entrepreneurship? The answer lies in how you act around your potential clients — do you serve others, or yourself? Here in The Mentee Podcast, we are launching an episode all about living your good life, networking, and creating the wow factor in your life — and those of your clients. Joe Sweeney, a passionate entrepreneur and networking expert, will explain his strategies on how to network and serve others. The secret to good networking isn't what most people think it is! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Life can bring you to many places and heights Networking is a place to give and not to get Be a fisherman, not a hunter The best networkers are good listeners, not talkers Serve others to wow them Be a calculated risk-taker Episode Highlights: [03:41] Joe's Journey After finishing his MBA, Joe Sweeney bought four manufacturing companies. He later sold them as he felt reassured knowing he had the money for his children's education. After, he oversaw the Wisconsin Sports Authority for four years. He returned to buying and selling companies after his time at the sports commission. Joe landed 23 clients, including his biggest client Brett Favre. Joe had a very long journey in his career, but he emphasizes the importance of networking and connecting with other big or small entrepreneurs. [09:08] Reframing Networking: Serve Others Networking is a place to give and not to get. Joe doesn't like what networking represents because most networkers act like hunters, running clients down at gatherings. It's better to be a fisherman: a hunter makes clients run while chasing them, but a fisherman brings in clients and waits for them. The secret of networking is learning that its purpose is to serve others. [11:20] Asking the Right Questions Joe shares that the great networkers are good talkers, but the best networkers are listeners. They ask great questions, sit back, and listen to their prospects. Networking is about giving people what they want; you won't learn about your clients if you're talking all the time. He shares that a good place to start is to talk about the prospects' personal life and their children. It's critical to choose the questions you ask with care. What you talk about with your client will create an "anchor" in their head. It's better to form positive anchors, so talk about what makes your clients excited! [16:47] Creating Wow Factors in People's Lives Joe takes a mental inventory of the people he meets and sets aside money every month to buy things for people. The key to wowing someone is to give them something personal and do something memorable. Serve others and let them feel you care. When you show up to a prospect, they ask three questions: Do they really care for me? Can they help me? Can I trust them? You have to show up and prepare for these questions with your words and actions. Small acts of kindness and service can go a long way! [28:36] Helping Joe and Taking Risks Joe says that what he needs help with right now is spreading the word. His number one passion is helping people do what they never thought they would have done.  Joe shares how people will not regret what they did on the death bed, but they will regret the things they did not do. The best thing to do is to get comfortable with risk. It's difficult, but ask yourself: “What's the worst that could possibly happen?” Resources Mentioned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEpL0XGhnzY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEpL0XGhnzY) https://www.amazon.com/Moving-Needle-Clear-Career-Business/dp/1118944089 (https://www.amazon.com/Moving-Needle-Clear-Career-Business/dp/1118944089)
