After fifteen years with the Denver Nuggets, Felipe Eichenberger has witnessed the evolution of National Basketball Association (NBA) performance firsthand. The demands of an NBA season include 82+ games, relentless travel, and the challenge of staying fresh through it all. Eichenberger reveals their post-game lifting culture, driven by the philosophy: “If it’s a hard day, let’s make it hard.” Prioritizing compliance over hardware, he emphasizes flexible periodization and nailing the basics to meet each player’s needs — whether navigating injuries, tailoring programs to position demands, or microdosing training for longevity. At the heart of it all is buy-in, trust, and accountability. Eichenberger shares the importance of leveraging psychology, getting top players to set the tone for the team, and balancing consistency with creativity. With more jobs and awareness in NBA strength and conditioning than ever, this episode explores how to make an impact at basketball’s highest level. How you maintain strength is by lifting weights. So, we have to play with the volume and things like that, but you have to lift weights often.” 11:40 “You can only work with players if they buy into your program. If they don't, they can go somewhere else. Like they have enough money to hire somebody else. They have enough money to do those things in the NBA. But why does a player want to work out with you? What kind of buy-in are you creating with that player? It could be different things. Accountability, if you say you're going to do something, do something. Be there before the player. Like show the player that you want to work with that player, right?” 18:00 “You have to focus on the whole team. That's what strength and conditioning is. So, my belief is that you're going to train the player that doesn't touch the court, and then you're going to play the player the most minutes very similar. So, like you got to give a chance to the guy that's like, in our case, our 17th guy trains the same as the first guy that we have.” 26:30

Sports historian Josh Elias stops by for a deep unraveling of the often misunderstood story behind the 1949 merger that created the National Basketball Association (NBA) as we know it today.  Drawing from his historically essential 2024 book The Birth of the Modern NBA: Pro Basketball in the Year of the Merger, 1949-1950, Elias takes us back to the pivotal moment when the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL) merged, uniting disparate big-city teams with small-town clubs - and setting the stage for professional basketball's future in the US. We dive into the tensions between East Coast metropolises and Midwestern industrial towns; the unexpected power struggles between the last BAA champion (and superstar George Mikan-led) Minneapolis Lakers and the final NBL winning Anderson (Indiana) Packers; and the NBA's early challenges with segregation, cultural divides, and an uncertain post-WWII American economy. Elias also shares some of the wildest and most fascinating anecdotes from his research, including mob-connected team owners, bizarre halftime performances, airport mishaps, and brushes with history-making figures like Jackie Robinson, Chuck Connors, and even a young pre-politics Gerald R. Ford. Step back in time to revisit the NBA's chaotic, colorful, and often overlooked first season - one that shaped the league for generations to come.  + + +   SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats 417 Helmets (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://417helmets.com/?wpam_id=3 BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "The Birth of the Modern NBA: Pro Basketball in the Year of the Merger, 1949-1950" : https://amzn.to/41PRnx6 FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/

Cosm is a front-facing, 180-degree, 87-foot diameter, 8K+ LED dome screen that can seat up to 1500 people. Their first location is opening in Los Angeles this weekend showing UFC 303, which is produced by their Cosm Immersive division (formerly LiveLikeVR) focusing on live sporting events, music, entertainment. They also have a Cosm Studios division that will continue to produce educational content for their network of planetariums, but also developing new forms of immersive art and immersive stories. Cosm Studios has been working with different XR artists over the past number of years in order to translate their work into either full dome planetariums or front-facing dome venues (with a second location opening in the future outside of Dallas, Texas). The Madison Square Garden Sphere opened up in Las Vegas on September 29, 2023 and has a seating capacity of around 18,600 people. Cosm is on a much smaller scale of a venue at 1500 people that allows them to be a bit more experimental with the types of immersive art, immersive stories, and immersive content as well as live sporting events to fill up their venue. Cosm listed a number of their content partnerships in a LinkedIn post from a couple of months ago where they said, "Transforming live sports and entertainment, Cosm LA invites you to experience the biggest and best live sports from ESPN, the National Basketball Association (NBA), Ultimate Fighting Championship, TNT Sports U.S., and NBC Sports in immersive 8K+. In addition to live sports, Cosm LA will showcase music, entertainment such as Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, and immersive art experiences from our Cosm Studios Creators Nancy Baker Cahill, Chris Holmes, Ricardo Romaneiro, and Guy Reid of PLANETARY COLLECTIVE." I had a chance to catch up with the head of Cosm Studios Neil Carty as well as the Senior Director of Studio Development for Cosm Studios Katy Yudin last year at Tribeca Immersive 2023 in order to get the backstory for how Cosm came about as well as how they've been working with immersive artists and immersive storytellers over the past couple of years to translate their XR projects to work in these different dome formats. His nicknames included "the Logo", in reference to his silhouette being the basis for the NBA logo; "Mr. Clutch", for his ability to make a big play in a key situation such as his famous buzzer-beating 60-foot shot that tied Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks; "Mr. Outside", in reference to his perimeter play with the Los Angeles Lakers and "Zeke from Cabin Creek" for the creek near his birthplace of Chelyan, West Virginia. West played the small forward position early in his career: he was a standout at East Bank High School and at West Virginia University, where he led the Mountaineers to the 1959 NCAA championship game. He earned the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player honor despite the loss in the championship. He then embarked on a 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers and was the co-captain of the 1960 U. S. Olympic gold medal team, a squad that was inducted as a unit into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2024, he will be inducted to the Hall of Fame as a contributor to the sport as an executive and consultant.West's NBA career was highly successful. Playing the guard position, he was voted 12 times into the All-NBA First and Second Teams, was elected into the NBA All-Star Team 14 times and was chosen as the All-Star MVP in 1972, the same year that he won the only title of his career. West holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series with 46.3. He was also a member of the first five NBA All-Defensive Teams (one second, followed by four firsts), which were introduced when he was 32 years old. Having played in nine NBA Finals, he is also the only player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP despite being on the losing team (1969). In 1980, West was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and named to the NBA 35th Anniversary Team. West was named as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996, and to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.After his playing career ended, West took over as head coach of the Lakers for three years. He led Los Angeles into the playoffs each year and earned a Western Conference finals berth once. Working as a player-scout for three years, West was named general manager of the Lakers before the 1982–83 NBA season. Under his reign, Los Angeles won six championship rings. In 2002, West became general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies and helped the franchise win their first-ever playoff berths. For his contributions, West won the NBA Executive of the Year Award twice: once as a Lakers manager (1995) and then as a Grizzlies manager (2004). West's son, Jonnie, also played college basketball for West Virginia. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:57 UTC on Thursday, 13 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Jerry West on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Amy Neural.

Toronto's Jontay Porter under NBA Investigation Amid Betting Inconsistencies

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is currently leading an inquiry into Jontay Porter, a dual position player for Toronto, in the face of suspicions related to gambling. Toronto Raptors coach, Darko Rajakovi?, acknowledged his awareness of the situation just before the team's match on a recent Monday night. It came to light when a representative of the league verified the commencement of the inquiry. Porter's performance during the matches held on January 26 and March 20 are the objects of interest within the investigation. It was reported that Porter made transient appearances for both games before exiting on the pretext of ailment or injury. The info was first disclosed by ESPN. Amidst the specifics, Porter's encounter with the Los Angeles Clippers consisted of a participation time of 4 minutes and 24 seconds, while during his run against Sacramento, his playing time spanned 2:43. Coach Rajakovi? showed faith in the sincerity of his players, stating he never doubts player injuries and reaffirming his belief in their honesty. In both matches under scrutiny, Porter's performance failed to match the betting predictions in relation to total points, rebounds, and three point shots made. Specifically, in the Clippers game, Porter did not achieve the betting odds of netting 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists; he ended with nil points, three rebounds, and a single assist. For the game against the Kings, the betting lines centered around accumulating 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. However, Porter ended that game also with zero points, supplemented with merely two rebounds. The distance between Porter's achievements and the prop wager lines suggests a substantial discrepancy. Porter was noticeably absent from the home game the Raptors had against the Brooklyn side on the very Monday mentioned earlier, with the reason cited as personal. Correspondingly, he was not present for the subsequent loss against Washington, once again due to personal reasons. It was also observed that prior to the Monday evening game against the Nets, Porter's locker was conspicuously vacant of any personal affects, although his name plate remained affixed. When Coach Rajakovi? was questioned about the occurrence, he confessed he had not shared the matter with the rest of the team. Rajakovi? stated that the team's reaction remained a mystery to him but added that such challenging situations are undesirable for any individual or team. As a necessity, they just have to cope with it and this revealed the understanding nature of the team toward the crisis. Twenty-four-year-old Jontay Porter, brother of Denver forward Michael Porter, holds a record of averaging 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists over 26 games, which included five starts. Over the course of the 2020-21 season, the 6-foot-10 Porter was also among the players for Memphis for a total 11 games. The NBA has rules in place to counteract such instances, requiring players to undergo one 'anti-gambling training session conducted by their Team and/or the NBA' on a yearly basis. This seems pertinent, as four G league players have faced suspensions ranging between three to five games this season, due to violations of gambling policies. During 2022, there was a pronounced wave of disqualification for six NBA 2K League players who had defied the league's regulations relating to gambling. The NBA policy is very clear: any player wagering anything of value on games or events in the NBA or the NBA G League can face a scale of sanctions from Commissioner Adam Silver. Washington forward Corey Kispert stressed on the simplicity and clarity of the rules, which were laid out before the season began. It is well-known that NBA has had commercial alliances with gaming companies over the years, and lists FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings as its official gaming partners. The NBA further practices relations with no less than 24 additional gaming operators. Nonetheless, gambling is not without its serious risks, as underscored by Cleveland Cavaliers' coach J.B. Bickerstaff who experienced threats from bettors during the last season. Bickerstaff revealed that the bettors had acquired his telephone number and sent him threatening messages about his family and place of residence. Expressing his concerns, Bickerstaff affirmed it's a fine line to tread. Such perilous incidents reveal the hidden threats behind the glamorous veil of sports betting. In the midst of this, public criticism from bettors is a common grievance among other players. Raptors forward Jordan Nwora remarked that he and his fellow players frequently receive feedback on how their performance influences gamblers. He added that such conversations are a part of the NBA culture. In a surprising turn of events, Major League Baseball (MLB) player Shohei Ohtani denied any involvement in sports betting nor being involved in settling any gambling-related debts of his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. His comments broke the silence about the allegations of illegal gambling and theft leveraged against him. ARK Invest and 21Shares, two investment firms, submitted two new Ethereum futures ETFs to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on August 24, 2023. The ETFs, which are called the ARK 21Shares Active Ethereum Futures ETF (ARKZ) and the ARK 21Shares Active Bitcoin Ethereum Strategy ETF (ARKY), would invest in cash-settled Ethereum futures contracts.Subscribe nowThis is the second time that ARK Invest and 21Shares have applied for an Ethereum ETF. Their first application, which was for a spot Ethereum ETF, was rejected by the SEC in February 2023.The SEC has not yet approved any Ethereum ETFs, but there is speculation that it may be more likely to approve a futures ETF than a spot ETF. Futures ETFs are less risky than spot ETFs because they do not involve the actual purchase of Ethereum.Cathie Wood, the CEO of ARK Invest, is a well-known advocate for cryptocurrencies. She has said that she believes Ethereum has the potential to be a trillion-dollar asset.Wood's bet on sports gaming seems to be paying off. In recent months, several sports leagues have announced partnerships with blockchain companies. For example, the National Basketball Association (NBA) has partnered with Dapper Labs to create NFTs, and the National Football League (NFL) has partnered with Animoca Brands to create a blockchain game. This increased interest in sports gaming could be a boon for Ethereum. Ethereum is the underlying platform for many popular NFT projects and blockchain games. As the sports gaming industry grows, it is likely to drive demand for Ethereum. Here are some additional thoughts on the potential impact of Ethereum futures ETFs and sports gaming on the crypto market:Ethereum futures ETFs could make it easier for institutional investors to invest in Ethereum. This could lead to increased demand for Ethereum and could push prices higher.Sports gaming could also be a major driver of demand for Ethereum. As the sports gaming industry grows, it is likely to drive demand for Ethereum-based NFTs and blockchain games. However, it is important to note that the crypto market is still very volatile. Prices can fluctuate wildly, and there is no guarantee that Ethereum futures ETFs or sports gaming will have a positive impact on the price of Ethereum.Overall, the potential impact of Ethereum futures ETFs and sports gaming on the crypto market is uncertain. However, it is an important development that is worth monitoring.

Listeners, we are back this week with Saskia Sorrosa. Saskia Sorrosa is a proud immigrant, and founder & CEO of Fresh Belies, the first-ever savory kid brand to launch using real ingredients serving “veggies as veggies and fruits as fruits” seasoned with herbs and spices commonly found in Latin American kitchens. Born in Ecuador, Sorrosa moved to the States at seventeen to attend George Washington University. After starting a family, she became hyper aware of the high sugar and high sodium snack choices that permeated grocery shelves. In response to the lack of options and with a desire to raise her children with flavors she grew up enjoying in Ecuador, Saskia created a brand that made healthy eating more authentically flavorful and uniquely delicious: Fresh Bellies. Since 2016 Saskia has grown Fresh Bellies into a national disruptor with Fresh Bellies being ranked among the top 5 natural toddler snacks in the country. Currently the snacks are sold in 5,000 stores throughout the U.S., including retail giants like Target, Sprouts, Walmart and Whole Foods. Fresh Bellies has won Expo East NEXTY Award for Best New Natural Kid's Product, and Saskia graduated from the Stanford Latino Business Action Network (LBAN) cohort! During her 16-year career in consumer marketing she climbed the ladder of corporate America to become the VP of Marketing in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a proud representation of American immigrants and women and, received several industry accolades for her innovation and leadership, including AdAge's 40 Under 40 and Hispanic Lifestyle's “Latina of Influence.” Originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador, Sorrosa currently resides in New York with her husband, Fernando and daughters, Isabella and Alexa Luna.During this episode we talked about: 03:40 - Moving to the US at 1707:21 - “I knew I wanted to make money”08:29 - “I was all about the opportunity”10:50 - Getting into Communications School11:58 - Her talk with the dean & the power of asking12:45 - “Don't answer your own questions”14:13 - Getting her first job after graduating18:56 - “The energy you put out is what you get back”19:27 - Burnout24:32 - Her journey to her own company26:36 - The entrepreneurial itch29:07 - Leaving with nothing29:47 - Timing30:59 - Talking Money: Starting the Company & Getting funds34:49 - “It was really: asking”36:59 - “Entrepreneur is masochism”38:05 - Entrepreneurs and mental health40:20 - “We bring our baggage to these conversations”44:17 - “I know my numbers like the back of my hand” Follow Saskia on all things social:WebsiteInstagramLinkedIn Follow Cafe con Pam on all things socialInstagramFacebookhttp://cafeconpam.com/Join the FREE Cafe con Pam ChallengeJoin our Discord  space and let's keep the conversation going! Subscribe, rate, review, and share this episode with someone you love! And don't ever forget to Stay Shining!
