This is one for the books – from TV Celebrity to Taxidermist to Social Media Influencer to Hunter there is not much that Laura Zerra has not done. Having starred in Naked and Afraid FIVE times, Laura is not stranger to the camera. The day before our podcast she did an Instagram Story of how to skin a road killed deer that her and her friend came across. Laura is possibly the most interesting guest we have had on the show and she had Steve and Kyle in stitches for most of it. That said, Laura is a bad ass survivalist and know what it takes to keep alive in the back country. From her formative years she was discovering what it takes to be alone and succeed in the wild and she imparted many of her life lessons of surviving in the backcountry. This is one show we are confident you will enjoy, get a few good laughs and definitely learn a few survival strategies.

Laura Zerra is most well known from the TV show Naked and Afraid, but there is so much more to who she is. From that the art of letter writing, to hand forging knives and leaving her own bloody footprints in the snow, I was enthused and captivated by Laura's stories and life. Dive in with me as we hear about her move from vegetarian to hunter, living with the seasons and grappling with the morality of nature. Special hosts Marty Skovlund Jr and Michael Shea welcome FRA’s first-ever female guest, Laura Zerra. Laura is a nomad, survivalist, and author who triumphed through multiple seasons of the hit Discovery show, Naked and Afraid
Laura Zerra talks about her life and some of the incredible things she's seen and done. Laura is an inspiration for people who decide to take the path less traveled. She's lived the "unconventional" life doing things her way. Thought the last decade Laura has stacked one adventure up against another. She's a risk taker, adventurer, and survivalist. So many people feel like they have to follow a certain path and do things like everyone else. Laura is inspiring in the fact that she has lived her life her way. Laura is most widely known for her appearances on "Naked and Afraid." What's more impressive is what Laura has accomplished off camera. Laura is an incredible survivalist, teaching her primitive fire making and shelter building skills around the world. She's an inspiration to young woman and an example of courage and strength. Check Laura out on her IG @laurazerra www.montanaknifecompany.comInstagram@montanaknifecompany@joshsmithknives
In this episode Joe Maynard, talks about his Army career, flying the baddest chopper on earth, depression, and knives. Joe openly talks about the struggles of adjusting to civilian life and how important it is for people to reach out for help. Aside from his accomplished service to our nation Joe talks about how he found knife making through Laura Zerra and how it saved his life. Going forward Joe now strives to help spread the power of the forge and hope to affect change in people struggling with purpose. In this episode Laura Zerra, Brandon Lilly, and Brandon Horoho join me for a late night B.S. session in the knife shop. After a couple days of forging in the shop, eating great food, and talking about ways we as a group can help people we sat down to share our week with you all. They may have been some whiskey involved or a little Baileys in our coffee. Hopefully this episode will make you laugh and also make you think about what you can do to make your life better and maybe someone else life better. I couldn't think of three better humans. Laura Zerra is rated as one of the top survivalist in the world man or woman. She has been on "Naked and Afraid" several times. What's amazing about Laura is that might be the most boring part of her. She has truly survived on her own since HS purposely living homeless in the US and abroad with literally no money on her. She can survive in harshest mountains and in an urban environment. I could go on but instead I think I'll just have her on another podcast by herself! Brandon Lilly was once rated the most powerful weight lifter on the planet. With raw lifts of 826 pound squat, 573 pound bench, and 804 pound deadlift he is clearly an athlete. But as with Laura he's so much more. Brandon is a passionate bow hunter, amazing chef, and fantastic speaker. He motivates and inspires no only by the way he leads but also in the way he talks about his failures. Brandon is an amazing human and my friend. Brandon Horoho, the quiet one on the podcast, is an incredible photographer. He's a skier, snowboarder, avid hiker, and hunter. Brandon is also part owner in Montana Knife Company. He is incredible at marketing businesses and knows how to take a business from the ground to outer space. Check out Brandon's incredible photography on his Instagram and at Montana Knife Company. Laura Zerra commanded attention and built a strong fan following on her multiple tours through the Discovery Channel show, Naked and Afraid. Now if you haven’t seen this show, you might think it’s not for real survivalist. And you, good, sir or madam, would be wrong. Laura Zerra is legit. Her journey to become a survivalist is very interesting. She’s the polar opposite of a prepper. Let’s get that straight right now. Laura is the anti prepper, in many ways. Preppers need their things. They hoard, and much of their plans require their equipment. You could literally drive Laura off into a desert with no water or food, and my money would be on her vs. the vultures. This week on Journey Back to the Land Tom Bass welcomes Clarence Gilmer II of Naked & Afraid. Clarence's survival skills began at a very young age, in the streets of Baltimore with his three brothers. Violence and crime posed an enormous challenge to navigating in a safe and respectful manner... resulting in Clarence being held at gunpoint a horrible 14 times. This terrifying reality persuaded him to focus on hard work and perseverance inside closed doors as a road for escape. He studied and taught computer science and business management for years. Clarence spent his time off backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, attempting to hide out from the hustle and bustle of city life. In 2006 he quit his office life completely. After surviving a sailboat crash in a tropical storm on his way to Brazil, getting robbed in Juarez, Mexico, and getting lost in the desert in southern California, Clarence knew his survival skills were not where he wanted them to be. After spending several months homeless on the streets of San Diego and in the redwood forests of Northern California, Clarence found a job in Montana where he met Laura Zerra (another NAA contestant). Laura assured Clarence that with his experience, he would be great at teaching inner city youth about the outdoors at a wilderness school in Connecticut. Picture if you can traveling to a remote area, being stripped of all your clothing, meeting a complete stranger (also naked), and being left to fend for yourselves in the raw elements of the forest or jungle. Could you do it? This is a real scenario for Laura Zerra, one of the original cast members of the Discovery Channel's Naked and Afraid. We first met Laura at a dinner table in Las Vegas and turns out there's much more to Laura than being a reality television star. As you might suspect Laura is full of life. She is a survivalist and a hunter. In this episode we learn quite a bit about the elements of survival, tips on surviving in the wilderness, sleeping in coyote dens, what tarantulas taste like, and how to learn from the animals you hunt, and why Laura developed a style of hunting called persistence hunting.
