Quick Summary: Kelsey sits down with Jodie, founder of Root and Bloom Therapy, for an honest, heartfelt pregnancy Q&A. They cover everything from why Kelsey waited 20 weeks to announce, to the emotional weight of miscarriage, the art of letting go when you're a type-A entrepreneur, and what intentional postpartum self-care really looks like the second time around. In This Episode:Why Kelsey waited until 20 weeks to announce her second pregnancy — and the business fears behind the decisionThe fear of losing clients when you announce a pregnancy as a self-employed entrepreneurKelsey's miscarriage journey and the conception story she wasn't expectingThe importance of "sitting in the pit" with someone rather than rushing past griefWhy her second pregnancy has felt completely different from her firstPreparing mentally and emotionally for birth and postpartum — with a toddler in the mixNavigating the relationship with her son Freddy during this major family transitionKelsey's worries this time vs. last time: what's changed and what hasn'tOutsourcing and asking for help — finallyPostpartum self-care rituals: the daily micro-moments that actually make a differenceKey Takeaways:You don't owe anyone your news in real time. Holding sacred moments close — pregnancy, health, family milestones — is a boundary, not a secret. Processing privately first is a gift you give yourself.Surrendering control isn't weakness — it's wisdom. In fertility, in business, and in parenting, the outcomes we most want rarely come from forcing them.Grief deserves a witness, not a fixer. When someone is in the pit, what they often need most is someone willing to come sit in it with them — not offer a ladder too soon.Know your joy list before the fog sets in. Write down the five to ten micro-moments that fill your cup before postpartum arrives, because you won't remember them when you're in the thick of it.Values aren't static — and that's okay. Checking in weekly with what this season is asking of you is more sustainable than rigidly holding one set of priorities.Memorable Quotes:"It was never a secret — there are just parts of life so magical that you want to hold them tight to your heart for a little bit." — Kelsey"Sometimes what you need is for someone to come into the pit and sit in the pit with you — not try to make you feel better, just help you not feel so alone." — Jodie"Going back four months, I would not have chosen to process all of that by myself. It was a lot of unnecessary rumination." — KelseyResources Mentioned:Root and Bloom Therapy: rootandbloomtherapy.caRoot and Bloom on Instagram: @rootandbloomtherapyservicesKelsey' Instagram: @KelseyReidlKelsey's Website: KelseyReidl.comKelsey's newsletter: kelseyreidl.com/newsletter"Surviving Life with a Toddler" Workshop: End of June in Brantford (in partnership with Grant Kids Therapy)About the Guest:Jodie Muir is the founder of Root and Bloom Therapy, offering individual and couples therapy with specialized training in perinatal mental health — all things pregnancy, postpartum, and parenthood. In this episode, Nole and Kevin dive into the importance of environmental conditioning—both physical and mental. They discuss why training in the heat and "getting off the X" during life's toughest seasons is vital for first responders. From the restorative power of fly fishing with Hold the Line to the contagious nature of a leader's attitude when things get tough. This conversation explores how we can better prepare ourselves for the inevitable ambushes of life.Key TakeawaysTraining in the Elements: Nole emphasizes that since the job happens outside, your fitness should too. Acclimatizing to heat and discomfort ensures you can perform when the stakes are high. The Contagious Leader: Whether you are at the fire station or the dinner table, your mood sets the tone. The guys discuss the "vibe" and how music, attitude, and presence affect those around us.Navigating the Ambush: Life will inevitably "ambush" you with trouble. Borrowing from military and tactical concepts, Kevin and Nole discuss the importance of having an SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for when things go wrong, starting with moving off the "X."The Healing Power of Water: A look at the science and soul behind being near water, featuring a highlight of the Hold the Line fly fishing program for first responders. The Forge of Life: A deep dive into the "terrible truth" that growth often requires being broken and reforged, drawing parallels between blacksmithing and spiritual development.Big thank you to My Epic and Facedown Records for the use of their song "Hail" in our podcast!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTU&ab_channel=FacedownRecordsGet signed up for the next trip with Hold the Line!https://www.fireupprogram.org/hold-the-lineThe Fire You Carry on YouTube.Sign up for a class at The Fire Up Program!https://www.fireupprogram.com/programsThe Fire Up Progam video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I__ErPW46Ec&t=12s&ab_channel=FireUpProgramThe Fire You Carry Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/thefireyoucarry/Donate to The Fire Up Program.https://www.fireupprogram.com/donateThe Fire Up Program Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/fireup_program/Kevin's Instagram.https://www.instagram.com/kevinpwelsh/?hl=enMyZone facility code for The Fire You Carry: CALIFUS001Get $60 off a MZ-Switch Heart Rate Monitor!https://buy.myzone.org/?lang=enUS&voucher=CALIFUS001-60
From childhood curiosity to feminist awakening to the brutal truth about why being rewarded with books instead of toys creates a mindset that sees disappointment as a story you've already read - and why the father who refused to let his daughters waste time in the kitchen when they could be reading Larry King interviews was actually building feminists before the word became trendy, the seven-year-old reading Gorbachev and Pilgrim's Progress instead of Lady Bird stories because "I wanted to be serious like my father," the psychological reality of imposter syndrome where good things happen and self-doubt kicks in but curiosity overrides it, the deliberate opportunist who makes friends "because I know there is something you have that I would like" without apology or shame, and why the father who said "if you can read a recipe you can cook the watching - you don't have to stay in the kitchen so many hours" was teaching his daughters that understanding beats conditioning every single time, while the real question becomes: why do parents push their children to be lawyers and pharmacists and doctors because it was their dream they didn't achieve instead of letting the child experience life for themselves, because that's not fair and the days when God was just giving out blessings are over - now you have to work for the manama, and if your character doesn't count for anything don't expect growth, and the ultimate truth is this: being kind is not an option you consider, it's something that comes naturally when you're raised by a man who helped strangers without knowing them and a woman who had to unlearn societal conditioning to understand that her daughters could be liberated, educated, and free to make their own choices instead of being trapped by what society said women should be. In this raw episode of Konnected Minds, host Derrick Abaitey sits down with Nana Aba Anamoah - a powerhouse media personality who dismantles the dangerous "stay in the kitchen and learn to cook" mentality that conditions girls to serve instead of lead. when meeting people for the first time and they say "oh Nana I like you so much" triggers curiosity about what they do and how they ended up there, and when finding out they have challenges her mind immediately races asking "how do I help, how do I help" because that's what she learned from watching her father. This isn't motivational empowerment talk from Instagram influencers - it's a systematic breakdown of why being rewarded with books instead of toys creates a mindset that sees curiosity as survival and disappointment as just another story you've already read, why a father who refused to let his daughters stay in the kitchen washing dishes when they could be reading adult books and watching Larry King Live was building feminists before the word became trendy, why reading Gorbachev and Pilgrim's Progress at age seven instead of colorful children's stories teaches you to be serious and understand the world like adults do, why the father who said "if you can read a recipe you can cook the watching without spending hours in the kitchen" was teaching his daughters that understanding beats conditioning every single time, why having a psychological condition called imposter syndrome means always doubting yourself when good things happen but pushing through with curiosity anyway, why being "a big opportunist" who makes friends because "I know there is something you have that I would like" is strategic not shameful when you're deliberate about what you want, why parents who push their children to be lawyers and pharmacists and doctors because it was their unfulfilled dream are being unfair - let the child experience life for themselves, why the days when God was just giving out blessings are over and now you have to work , and why being kind is not something you sit down and consider - it comes naturally when you're raised by a proper human being who helped strangers without hesitation and made kindness the foundation of everything you do. Christine Fruehwirth almost died twice from stress-related health crises. She shares her hard-fought experience in her new book, Surviving Life's Storms and Thriving in the Aftermath, as well as in her life coaching and career counseling business to help people reach their full potential. Surviving Life's Storms and Thriving in the Aftermath discusses the four stages of living that she developed and identifies as Surviving, Stabilizing, Emerging and Thriving. She explores the distinct stages of the "survive to thrive" journey and how to apply this framework to careers, marriage, relationships and parenting. She includes what it takes to be able to move through these stages by addressing what is holding people back and the need to heal inner wounds. Christine was inspired to write Surviving Life's Storms and Thriving in the Aftermath because of her youngest son's incredible life journey the last five years, as well as wanting to share her own story in facing one challenge after another during the past decade, including losing her grandparents during the pandemic, family estrangement, significant health issues and divorce. This book includes stories and insights from individuals she has been blessed to know who can not only relate to but, in many cases, have moved through the four stages of living. "Stagnation is a risk and a choice," Christine says. Christine has had more than 20 years of career counseling and life coaching experience through her successful business, FlexCareers Consulting. Her passion has been helping stay-at-home parents return to the workplace and working parents who are looking for more balance in their lives, though she helps clients of all ages start or reinvent their careers. From 2009 to 2019, Christine worked as a Career Consultant and Instructor of a Career Management Strategy course at George Washington University, and most recently at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. During her years working in higher education, she developed an expertise in helping undergraduates of all majors recruit for and successfully obtain internships and full-time positions in the Financial Services industry. She spent a decade in that industry focused on consumer and later investment banking, working for major financial institutions including Bank of America, Capital One and Wells Fargo. Her last few years in the industry were spent at Lending Tree on the senior leadership team. Her perspective is unique because of her 23 years of parenting, 20 years of career and life coaching experience, and 10 years of teaching college students. Her hope for her book is to help readers achieve their full potential no matter what stage of life they are in, be in a sustainable thriving state going forward, and then directly help or motivate others on their "survive to thrive" journeys. Christine earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Villanova University in 1991 and an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia in 1996. Christine has earned her life and career coaching certification through the Life Purpose Institute and has taken life coaching classes through the Coaches Training Institute. Christine understands the joys and challenges of all types of work/family balance issues, as well as what employers are looking for both those starting their career and those re-entering the workforce. Christine resides in Potomac, Maryland and enjoys spending time with her three adult children. Those who visit her website can schedule a free consultation! How did a handful of ordinary people become ten thousand committed followers of Jesus in the year following his public execution? How did his movement gain so much momentum, especially as ten of the eleven charter members were crucified, burned, or stoned to death within a few decades? How did ten thousand Christians become one million by the second century? And how did one million become 3.3 billion today? Written in the middle of the first century, The Acts of the Apostles tells the story of how, despite facing serious persecution and hardship, Christianity spread like wildfire across the Roman Empire and beyond. For 25 weeks at The Story Church (September 10 through Easter 2024), we will journey through Acts in pursuit of the truth behind history's most consequential movement.

Today's episode of Eyes Wide Open is part one of two where I talked to Callie Ezell. Callie is a Chicago-based abstract artist and founder-entrepreneur with Mcmillan Street Art. We recently got connected through a mutual friend, who told me that Callie spent 10 years of her life in a cult. Reality and unscripted television are often anything but that. Join us in demanding that producers add a mandatory disclaimer before and after each episode, underscoring that episodes are for entertainment purposes only, and the content can be edited, manipulated, and presented in any order for storyline purposes. https://sign.moveon.org/petitions/add-a-disclaimer-to-all-reality-television-programming For those of you who've been following my post-Love Is Blind journey, you may have seen me compare elements of the production process to being part of a cult. This was inspired and informed by my conversations with Callie, because a lot of what she has shared with me about her experience in this cult was very similar to what I and my fellow cast members experienced when we participated in the Love is Blind experiment. Callie's story was way too difficult for us to cover in one episode, so we split it up into two parts. In part one, Callie will help us understand how she was recruited by this cult, what her first day and year was like, what she experienced from a control perspective, and what her life was like while she was living within this program. In the upcoming part two, we will focus on how Callie came to realize what was happening and how she got out. I hope that this episode opens your eyes to some of the control mechanisms and horrific practices that are happening in our real world, and how this can really happen to anyone. Callie's story is something that I think is really important for everybody to hear, and I hope that this helps you go through life with your eyes wide open.
