Netta Gorman Netta Gorman is the person behind Life After Sugar… because real life carries on even when you’re sugar free. Netta has been living happily free from sugar, flour and sweeteners since July 2015 (6 years now!). She spent most of her thirties and early forties struggling with chronic constipation and digestion issues but she never thought that her love for chocolate and desserts had anything to do with it. Doctors kept telling her to eat more fibre, but this was making things worse, not better. In July 2015, she got to a breaking point where her pain and suffering was so bad that she decided to do something she’d never tried before: cut out sugar, flour and sweeteners for a temporary period of just 2 weeks. And to her complete amazement, she felt so much better that she just carried on and never looked back! One thing that still amazes her is that her tastes changed, and now she doesn’t even *like* sweet tastes any more (whereas before, she was the world’s #1 sweet tooth). And most of all, the one word that sums up her life after sugar is “freedom” – freedom from cravings, from energy crashes, from that love-hate relationship with sugar, from all the health issues she had. And this is why she decided to help other people to get to this place of freedom and peace with food and with themselves, with the Life After Sugar Program. This is the last episode of 2024, so let's finish off the year in good cheer and in good health. And maybe good health for you includes less sugar. But maybe it's difficult for you to imagine actually feeling better with less sugar because you've never done it before.Or you have, but you feel you failed, or you just can't believe that taking away all your favorite sugary comfort foods will actually make you feel better. One of the top fears that people have is that they won't actually feel better because they'll feel restricted.Or that they'll be constantly feeling guilty or controlled about what they can or they can't eat.Well, I certainly won't be telling you what to do (or not do!).Because let's face it - we've had enough of that type of approach from the diet culture.Keep an open mind as you listen to this episode. Especially if you believe that cutting down or cutting out sugar will make you feel restricted.Because actually, the reality of freedom from cravings feels like the complete opposite of restriction.Need guidance and support to get rid of cravings so that you can slim down and finally feel in control around food?To get personalized guidance from me, plus support and accountability in a small group... apply here to join the 90-day program, Freedom from Cravings Formula TODAY.To rate and review this podcast: scroll down in your podcast player on your phone and click on the stars. One of the fears that people have (and I definitely had it myself) is that if they cut sugar from their diet, then there's nothing left to eat.I mean, sugar is everywhere. Right? Well, not quite. Sugar - added sugar I mean - is nowhere to be found in whole foods: in fruits and vegetables, for example. But it is a very common additive in industrial highly processed foods, or "ultra processed foods" as they're known. And many studies have shown that there's a link between chronic inflammation and a high consumption of prepackaged foods like pizzas, frozen dinners, sauces and condiments, and obvious sources of sugar like sodas, cookies and pastries. So less sugar means less chronic inflammation, and a lower risk of conditions such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, digestive issues, and fatty liver disease.So... can you imagine how you would feel with less sugar and less inflammation?Listen to this episode to hear about the benefits of cutting sugar!Need guidance and support to get rid of cravings so that you can slim down and finally feel in control around food?To get personalized guidance from me, plus support and accountability in a small group... apply here to join the 90-day program, Freedom from Cravings Formula TODAY.To rate and review this podcast: scroll down in your podcast player on your phone and click on the stars. As we take a break due to travel, we go back to Episode 151 with Netta Gorman,, in which she and I discuss issues with sugar and some practical advice and tips for dealing with it. We resume our regular podcast lineup next week when we return. Show Notes from Episode 151 Netta was desperate to overcome her debilitating health issues. She struggled with chronic constipation, headaches, achy joints, uncomfortable extra pounds, energy slumps, anxiety, mood swings, and more. By 45, she'd tried everything… except for one solution! Cut sugar. But she resisted it – until she realized that “nothing changes if nothing changes”. It started as a temporary 2-week experiment to cut sugar, flour and sweeteners in July 2015. And to her amazement, Netta began to feel so much more energetic and vitalized that she carried on… and it's been 7 years and counting! Now, Netta shares her voyage of self-discovery that transformed her relationship with sugar and her need for comfort foods. Netta is also the creator of the 12-week Life After Sugar Program, which empowers people who are open-minded and slightly rebellious to let go of sugar for good. She also offers a safe, private community that provides support and accountability in the After Sugar Club membership. Whole foods... processed foods... and ultra-processed foods (UPFs)... What's the difference?I'm not the first to ask this question. In fact, the NOVA system assigns foods to one of four groups, based on how much processing they have been through:Group 1 - Unprocessed or minimally processed foodsGroup 2 - Processed culinary ingredientsGroup 3 - Processed foodsGroup 4 - Ultra-processed food and drink productsIn this episode, you'll get examples of foods from each group. Unsurprisingly, I also talk about one food in particular: sugar. You'll also hear about my take on the NOVA classification system as a whole (no pun intended!). And finally, I'll give you my definition of "food", and where you can learn more about which foods work for YOU.Need guidance and support to get rid of cravings so that you can slim down and finally feel in control around food?To get personalized guidance from me, plus support and accountability in a small group... join the 90-day program, Freedom from Cravings Formula TODAY.To rate and review this podcast: scroll down in your podcast player on your phone and click on the stars. Ellen was a food addict from the age of about 7, she says, with a history of obesity. Doctors and dietitians had put her on many diets as she was growing up, to the point of her doctor suggesting bariatric surgery. She spent a lot of time alone in her bedroom eating ultra processed foods like crisps and chocolate, with the radio on so that nobody would know. And thinking about how to end it all because she was just so miserable. Then when Ellen was 26, she read Dr. Atkins' book, and so started her low carb/keto journey. She I lost 11 stone (154lbs) in 2 years, and has maintained that weight loss for about 13 years. She stopped eating anything with sugar and flour in it, and refined carbohydrates as well. Her foods included meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, and at the time fruit as well.Ellen explains how moderation doesn't compute for her. Even now, after all these years, she still can't moderate certain foods. Over time, Ellen realized that every time she reintroduces carbohydrates, the weight starts to creep back on. So it's easier if she just doesn't eat them. And she says she doesn't miss them. She feels quite satiated with her proteins, fats, and vegetables.Listen to Ellen tell about how she no longer feels addicted to sugar and ultra processed food, and how she got to this wonderful sense of freedom and peace around food.Find Ellen here.Need guidance and support to get rid of cravings so that you can slim down and finally feel in control around food?To get personalized guidance from me, plus support and accountability in a small group... join the 90-day program, Freedom from Cravings Formula TODAY.Let's chat to see if the Freedom from Cravings Formula program is a good fit for you! Why is my life like this? What have I done to deserve all this? But she pretended that everything was OK. She made it look good on the outside. She was a people pleaser, a caretaker, a workaholic, she says. In her work, Judi would always rise to the top because she was an overachiever. Judi developed several addictions, but sugar was the hardest to let go of.Listen to how Judi went from not being able to sleep, depression, self hate, and feeling desperate... to healing her trauma, and feeling free from the hold that sugar had on her. Dana stopped stopped sugar - more specifically, white sugar and flour - in December of 2021. In this episode, Dana tells how she was very addicted to sugar for 40 some years. Today, she recognizes that for her, it's better not to have any than to try to have a little. It was when she was in the hospital in 2021 after an accident that Dana remembered that her grandmother had lost both her legs to diabetes. Dana herself had been diabetic since she was 40 and still didn't give up the sugar. In fact, she even had a heart attack and bypass surgery when she was 50, and that still didn't help her give up sugar. But then she thought: What if I've screwed up my life with this sugar? What if my leg doesn't heal?In this episode, you'll hear how Dana finally became sugar free and reversed her diabetes. For Dana, being sugar free means that she tries not to eat any processed food. She lost 85lbs when she cut sugar and flour. She also discovered intermittent fasting. Plus she walks every day.And most of all, she feels good. In fact, Dana says that she didn't know what feeling good felt like. She says she can live her life more honestly now because she's not hiding anything. Beck signed up for the Freedom from Cravings Formula 5-step program in the spring of 2024 because although she knew all about the negative effects of sugar, she was still struggling with sugar cravings.Especially for chocolate.Chocolate with nuts, to be precise. In fact, Step 2 of the program is designed to be a deep dive into learning to make sustainable habit changes. One example is that instead of focusing so much on stopping a bad habit (reaching for chocolate), Beck reframed that into introducing a good habit (eating foods that don't contain added sugar). This positive reframe made a huge difference for her to be able to claim back her personal power with respect to sugar and chocolate. This episode is an excerpt from one of Beck's accountability calls with me (published with her permission, of course). You get to be a fly on the wall and listen in on how Beck is working on changing her habits around chocolate. To get personalized guidance from me, plus support and accountability in a small group, so that you can get rid of cravings, slim down, and finally feel in control around food... join the 90-day program, Freedom from Cravings Formula TODAY.To rate and review this podcast: scroll down in your podcast player on your phone and click on the stars.
