On this episode of the Daily Wellness Podcast, I interview Dr. Jeff Hockings, cofounder of a patented type 2 diabetes reversal program. Dr. Hockings breaks down why type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle-driven condition, how it can be reversed (not cured) with targeted diet, coaching, supplements and accountability, and what real-life outcomes look like when people commit to change. If you or someone you love is managing blood sugar, this conversation offers practical hope and a clear path forward.Main points:Types of diabetes: distinction between type 1 (autoimmune), type 2 (lifestyle/adult-onset, reversible) and the emerging “type 3” link to Alzheimer's/dementia.Causes and patterns: long-term high-carb/high-sugar diets, hidden sugars, sedentary lifestyle and societal factors (fast food, screen time) drive insulin resistance. Most primary care doctors are trained to manage diabetes with medications, not reverse it — reversing requires different nutritional and lifestyle approaches. What “reversal” means: achieving a non-diabetic A1C (≤ ~5.9) while off diabetic medications — essentially remission that requires lifelong maintenance of healthy habits.Program structure includes a personalized telemedicine program (3–7 months typical), assigned health coach, daily/weekly check-ins, Enjoy/Avoid food list, supplements, exercise guidance, and medication weaning coordinated with the patient's physician.Diet approach: similar to a paleo-style focus — whole foods (vegetables, fruits, meats), avoid high-carb processed foods and dairy/sugary items; not a restrictive calorie-counting diet, but sustainable lifelong eating patterns.Role of supplements and exercise.Benefits beyond glucose: improved blood pressure, cholesterol, kidney function, sleep, energy, sexual function (ED improvement), and reduced need for multiple medications.Success examples: dramatic cases shared — patients coming off high insulin doses, large A1C improvements, weight loss and resolution of neuropathy/blurred vision after following the program.GLP-1s and meds: GLP-1s and other pharmaceutical options are treatments (and increasingly popular), but they are not a reversal — they carry side effects and are not a substitute for lifestyle-based remission.Prediabetes is usually easy to reverse with simpler interventions; routine annual lab work is key for early detection. The program is telemedicine-based, available across the U.S., with a money-back guarantee if prescribed steps are followed and reversal is not achieved.Connect with Dr. Jeff HockingsWebsite and webinar: https://diabetesreversalgroup.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/diabetesreversalgroup/Please take 1 minute to show your support! Hello and welcome to my book on: Habit Stacking, Synaptic Pruning, and Diabetes Naturally. I hope you enjoy and find this book useful. Our life is what our thoughts make it. Do every act of your life as if it were your last. In a word, your life is short. You must make the most of the present with the aid of reason and justice. Since it is possible that you may be quitting life at this very moment, govern every act and thought accordingly.Marcus Aurelius Emperor of Rome, 121 AD -180 ADIs your glass half-empty or half-full? How you answer this age-old question about positive thinking may reflect your outlook on life, your attitude toward yourself, and whether you are optimistic or pessimistic—and it may even affect your health. [1]In 2007, Researchers at Oxford University compared the number of neurons in new born babies with that of adults and found the new born babies had a significantly higher number of neurons than adults.[2] As we mature, synapses or connections between neurons in the brain are pruned if they are not used, and the energy is redirected to maintaining synapses that are used. You likely have strong habits and connections that you take for granted each day. There are many thousands of daily habits our brain is good at repeating over and over. When developing new habits, you can leverage the interconnectedness of behaviour to your advantage. One of the most effective methods for establishing a new habit is to identify a current habit and then stack your new behaviour on top of it. This technique is known as habit stacking. I have consciously developed habits that help me avoid consuming foods containing highly refined carbohydrates, sugar, and sugar alcohols. You can learn to turn negative thinking into positive thinking. The process is simple, but it does take time and practice because you are creating a new habit, after all. It is important to learn the value of positive thinking and to focus on having a positive outlook.Habit Stacking is the foundation of Lifestyle Changes to Prevet and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes NaturallyMark Ashfordinformation@markaashford.com[1] Mayo Clinic, "Stress Management," (2025).[2] Nielsen RD Abitz M, Jones EG, Laursen H, Graem N, Pakkenberg B. Hello and welcome to my book How to Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes. This book has been a learning journey. I've met diabetics who, after diagnosis, treat it as a medication-managed condition. I've always abhorred medication. The human body is amazing, and we can achieve so much in our short lives if we help and respect it. I was determined to lean about my condition, and the Life Style changes to help me manage it and make me medication-free. Chronic illnesses, which typically appear later in life, significantly impact life expectancy.· A 55-year-old Canadian male, with no chronic medical conditions, has a projected life expectancy of an additional 23.3 years.· A 55-year-old Canadian male, Type 2 Diabetic, who does not manage their condition well and makes no Lifestyle changes, may have as little as 13.2 years left to live.· A 55-year-old Canadian male, Type 2 Diabetic, who manages their condition well and makes the life changes required, has a life expectancy can be 21.1 years. This book is the 19th in a series of books I have written on Diabetes and specific aspects of the condition. It brings together information found in my other 18 books on Preventing and Reversing Naturally Type 2 Diabetes. Combining what I have learned revealed something surprising. My Type 2 Diabetes was self-inflicted and preventable. What can reverse it and the need for medications can also prevent it.Understanding its cause requires a different perspective on life. A recent study from the University of Cambridge[1] reveals habits learned in the young adult years (16-30 years) set the stage for chronic conditions in later years and contributed to my diagnosis. Preventing chronic health conditions involves changing our life view from early teens and recognizing behaviors that lead to them. Medical screening should focus on tracking indicators of these behaviors. Reversing Type 2 Diabetes requires changing behaviors and habits that cause the diagnosis. Increasing personal health knowledge and making lifestyle changes to reduce medication dependency are essential.I hope you enjoy and find this book contributes to your understanding of your body, the way it works and how you can influence your long-term health.Mark Ashfordinformation@markaashford.com[1] Ibid.
I first met Dr. Eric Westman at a low-carbohydrate meeting a number of years ago where he discussed an extremely important and insightful human clinical trial he had conducted in which he counseled participants with type 2 diabetes to follow a very low-carbohydrate, essentially ketogenic, diet. He was almost prohibited from conducted the study because some colleagues felt it was too dangerous. Nonetheless, the study was completed and demonstrated that type 2 diabetic participants no longer needed insulin and most diabetes drugs while achieving improved blood glucose measures by engaging in a lifestyle that was the direct opposite of conventional dietary advice. As groundbreaking as this study was for its time, it is simply not talked about enough, as it is one of the most important pieces of evidence that validates the idea that limiting carbohydrates and sugars, not fats or saturated fats, is key to, in this case, improving diabetes control, even helping make many people non-diabetic. I therefore thought it would be a good idea to ask Dr. Westman to describe his rationale for the study, discuss the results, and share the lessons he has learned since then. Can you eat fruit with diabetes? Fruit is often seen to contain lots of sugar and carbs, so many people are afraid to eat them. You may have even noticed your blood sugars getting high when you snack on an orange. So, what's the truth on this? Yes, moving to plant-based eating can help your body in so many ways, like lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and even weight loss. But since you'll be eating more carbs like fruits and whole grains, won't that make your glucose levels go ‘through the roof' and worsen your diabetes? If that's what you're worried about, let's talk about it. In this episode, I'll show you that yes, you CAN have your fruit and eat it…and research is showing that there can even be benefits to your blood sugars by including them in your meals. In today's episode, I delved into the top five reasons why a plant-based diet can help reverse type 2 diabetes. While not everyone can reverse their condition, those diagnosed within the last 10 years have a good chance. Here are the key points discussed: High Dietary Fiber: Plant-based foods are rich in fiber, which slows down the absorption of blood sugar. Consuming non-starchy vegetables before starchy ones can help manage blood sugar levels effectively. Weight Management: Whole food plant-based diets are typically lower in calories, leading to weight loss and reduced abdominal fat. This enhances insulin sensitivity and better blood sugar control. Lower Saturated Fat Intake: Plant-based diets are naturally lower in saturated fats, which are primarily found in animal products. Reducing saturated fat intake helps clear out fat stored in muscles and the liver, improving insulin sensitivity. Improved Insulin Sensitivity: Transitioning from a high-fat, low-carb diet to a high-carb, low-fat plant-based diet can significantly improve insulin sensitivity, even for type 1 diabetics. Optimal Gut Health: A high-fiber diet promotes a healthy microbiome, which is crucial for overall health. Consuming a variety of plant foods ensures a diverse intake of essential nutrients. I also touched on type 1.5 diabetes, or LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults), which is an autoimmune condition that can be managed with a plant-based diet and sometimes requires medication or insulin. Today, I'm fortunate to welcome Dr. Jason Fung for the fifth time. Jason Fung, MD, was born in 1973 and trained in Los Angeles and Toronto as a kidney specialist. He founded The Fasting Method (TheFastingMethod.com) to provide evidence-based advice for weight loss and managing blood sugars, focusing on low carbohydrate diets and intermittent fasting. In this episode, Dr. Jason Fung emphasizes that fasting should not be followed by binge eating, as it negates the benefits of the fast. The purpose of fasting is to allow the body to use its stored calories, such as glucose and fat, which is beneficial for weight loss and managing type 2 diabetes. If one consumes excessive calories after fasting, the body will store these extra calories as fat, thereby hindering progress. Tune in as Dr. Fung explains certain foods stimulate GLP-1, a hormone that helps regulate appetite. Protein-rich foods make you feel full quickly, while bitter foods like arugula, dandelion greens, ginger, and spices such as turmeric, fenugreek, and cinnamon can suppress appetite. However, while pharmaceutical interventions targeting GLP-1 can be powerful, they are not always ideal due to potential side effects, such as nausea and loss of enjoyment in food. In this podcast, I explore the benefits of a plant-based diet for reversing type 2 diabetes. The first benefit I discuss is the high dietary fiber in plants, which helps slow down the absorption of blood sugar. The second benefit is weight management and achieving a slimmer body, which results from a whole food plant-based diet, leading to improved insulin sensitivity. The third benefit is the reduced intake of saturated fat from animal products, which can help in controlling blood sugar levels. By incorporating more plants into our diets, we can experience improved blood sugar control and potentially reverse type 2 diabetes. Our guests today are Registered Dietician Diana Licalzi and Exercise Physiologist Jose Tejero. Together, they founded Reversing T2D, an online health platform that helps people gain control of their blood sugar through plant-based nutrition, exercise, and mindset. In their new book, The Type 2 Diabetes Revolution: A Cookbook and Complete Guide to Managing Type 2 Diabetes, Diana and Jose help us lower our blood sugar, and eliminate or reduce the need for medication if we're taking it. It has over 100 delicious plant-based recipes and tips, with something for every palate. Join us as Diana and Jose provide their insight into combatting this pervasive, but preventable, malady. “The pathophysiology behind insulin resistance confuses people because when they are already insulin resistant and they eat, let's say, a banana, their blood sugar is going to rise. So, they put one and one together. They are like, ‘Okay, bananas equal spikes; hence bananas are bad. Hence, fruits as a whole are bad.' And then that is when the mix-up in avoiding all carbohydrates starts. They say ‘all carbohydrates are evil. I cannot go ahead and eat carbohydrates for the rest of my life,' and they start avoiding the healthful carbohydrates, the ones that are full of fiber, like fruits, vegetables, the whole grains. A banana never gave anybody type 2 diabetes. The reason why you are spiking up after eating a banana is not due to the fructose and the fiber in the banana. It's due to the insulin resistance at a cellular level that has developed over multiple years of eating a diet that has been high in saturated fat, refined carbohydrates, an excess of calories, and not enough physical activity, and that is what led to you becoming intolerant to healthy carbohydrates.” – Jose Tejero What we discuss in this episode: - The differences between type 1, type 1.5 and type 2 diabetes. - The link between visceral fat and insulin resistance. - The dangers of consuming saturated fats and refined carbohydrates. - How you can determine if you are prediabetic. - Why we're at a greater risk for diabetes as we age. - The importance and benefits of eating fiber. - The truth about carbohydrates. - Why eating a whole foods plant-based diet can help you reduce insulin resistance. - Why meat consumption puts you at greater risk for type 2 diabetes. - Why exercise helps with diabetes. - The benefits of walking after meals. - Diabetes myths.
