In this episode, Carrie and Jake talk about Kendare Blake's 2021 YA horror novel 'All These Bodies', a sort of true crime podcast in the form of a period piece YA novel. It's unreliable narrators all the way down! Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening, if you're interested in a spooky, atmospheric novel that raises more questions than it answers. This week, Jake and Carrie suffer in exquisite ecstasy as they discuss 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Chapter 8: The Burial'. Is Sabrina playing 'The Secret of Monkey Island' poorly? Is bringing back the dead, by and large, a no-no? Can an episode of TV centered on a deadly mining disaster also be super horny? Listen to the episode to find out! We'd love to hear from you! This episode includes a clip from the Outside Xtra youtube channel's playthrough of the 90s FMV game 'Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland', a fun video of a nearly incomprehensibly goofy video games. For this episode, Carrie and Jake barely scratch the surface of Tracy Deonn's debut novel 'Legendborn'. What a book! We both loved this YA tale of wizards, knights, and being a Black student at UNC-Chapel Hill. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! Who have two thumbs and an opinion about Stephanie Perkins's new YA horror novel, 'The Woods Are Always Watching'? Jake and Carrie do! Welcome to a new HOT TAKE SPECIAL, in which Jake speculates that Jon Arbuckle (of Garfield fame)'s old roommate was a serial killer, and Carrie points out a downside to stickshifts that many might overlook. The episode (and the book) has some kind of graphic descriptions of body trauma, so be aware of that. Also we definitely describe the plot in some detail. Spoilers ahoy! Back in 2017, Carrie and Jake went for a walk in the Eversgreen Forest, critiqued Veronica's negotiating techniques, explored a haunted attic, and went shopping on Glamazon. Join them in their travels on this week's episode of 'Living In A Van Down By The Riverdale', in which Love YA Like Crazy's Carrie and Jake discuss Riverdale Chapter 7: In A Lonely Place. The theme song is "JOSIE HAS THE UPPER HAND" by Josh Woodward. Free download: http://joshwoodward.com/
This episode, Jake and Carrie discuss 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Chapter 7: Feast of Feasts'. Carrie has the Shinning! Jake connects ex-GW Bush scriptwriter and current Never Trumper David Frum to satanic rituals! There's a subplot we actually kind of like! And some we're not as fond of. Give it a listen and see what you think! If you have any comments or suggestions, tweet to us at https://twitter.com/loveYApod, or email us at podcast at loveYAlikecrazy.com. In this episode, we reference a tweet by Mara Wilson and an essay by philosopher John Holbo. (Incidentally, while putting together these show notes, I found out that Holbo had tweeted out some updates regarding that essay a couple of years ago.) This episode includes a clip from the Simpsons episode 'Treehouse of Horror V', the overture from the movie 'Cannibal: The Musical', and a brief portion of the Velvet Underground song 'Venus in Furs'. For this episode, Carrie and Jake read 'Darius the Great Deserves Better' by Adib Khorram. Carrie is a pretty good shell. Jake is making unapproved tea. Is penis mockery just part of growing up? Why are the parents in this book different from other YA parents? These questions are addressed in a spoiler-filled discussion. We recommend reading the book before listening! Another year, another episode of Sabrina! Today we're talking about 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Chapter 6: An Exorcism in Greendale', in which Suzie makes Jake sad, Hilda makes Carrie happy, and the mention of thirteen months makes us agree that that's just a lot of goddamned months. If you have any comments or suggestions, tweet to us at https://twitter.com/loveYApod, or email us at podcast at loveYAlikecrazy.com. We'd love to hear from you! Thanks to Shaenon K. For this episode, Carrie and Jake read 'Darius the Great is Not Okay' by Adib Khorram. Carrie does some Google Maps research, Jake mentions Puppetry of the Penis, and they have a brief discussion of teasplaining, while completely failing to talk about truck nuts, alas. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! This episode features a clip from the early Lonely Island song 'The Heist', and a couple of brief excerpts from the 'Darius the Great is Not OK' audiobook, narrated by Michael Levi Harris. The episode ends with a recording of 'The Lion Song' by Jake's cousin David, who recently died of COVID-19. You can hear a few of David's songs on Jake's soundcloud. Hi again all! Welome back to Love YA Like Crazy, where, this episode, we're talking about ... a BOOK??? (It's true!) Specifically, 'A Song Below Water' by Bethany C. Morrow. This episode was recorded on August 20 -- sorry for the delay in getting to you! But this is being released the day before the 2020 US election, and I imagine that a lot of you are kind of stressed, so, for now, just put in your earbuds and think back to that far-off yesteryear of ten and a half weeks ago, when, uh ... Ah, hell, everything still sucked, didn't it? Never mind. But the book has a lot of things to talk about, and we hope you enjoy the discussion! As always, the episode contains a lot of spoilers, so you may wish to read the book first, if you prefer to remain unspoiled. If you have any comments or suggestions, join us on our Goodreads page at https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/188869-love-ya-like-crazy, or tweet to us at https://twitter.com/loveYApod, or email us at podcast at loveYAlikecrazy.com. Jacob Haller of Love YA Like Crazy joins me to talk about Abducted: Fugitive of Love. A movie with more clever twists than it has to have and more nudity than expected, and we propose a TV-show spinoff "STAT!" about the a couple of minor characters.
Some things are acceptable to be into, such as songs about partying, veils, and Val from Josie and the Pussycats. Then there are the things we can do without, such as football, journalism spa retreats, pointy sleepwear, and maple syrup jokes! We discuss this distinction, play 'Things I Bought At Sheetz', and more, in this week's episode of 'Over The Riverdale And Through The Woods', in which Love YA Like Crazy's Carrie and Jake discuss Riverdale Chapter 5: Heart of Darkness. Jake often worries that he goes overboard in adding audio clips to these things, so he just wants you to know that he came this → ← close to putting a little Weird Al into this episode, before listening to the better angels of his nature and deciding against it. The theme song is "JOSIE HAS THE UPPER HAND" by Josh Woodward. Free download: http://joshwoodward.com/
It's time to take a nice nap, put some Bugles on your fingers, meet my brother Bob, eat your heart out, and swear at Garage Band, as Carrie and Jake talk about 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Chapter 5: Dreams in a Witch House!' ⚡ Spoilers abound, so we recommend watching the episode before listening! We start this episode by briefly addressing JK Rowling's recent transphobic comments, before turning to more pleasant topics: It's time to head to the Big E, violate the Satanic Temple's trandemarks, and talk to some creepy kids about your stolen bathrobe, because this episode we're talking about 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Chapter 4: Witch Academy', available on Netflix! Secrets are revealed, spoilers are spoiled, so you may wish to watch the episode of Sabrina before listening. Grab an audiobook, descend to Hell through a styrofoam trap door, and go spelunking for Satan with Carrie and Jake as we talk our way through 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Chapter 3: The Trial of Sabrina Spellman', available on Netflix. Also included: some comments from listener Steph [redacted]! Secrets are revealed, spoilers are spoiled, so you may wish to watch the episode of Sabrina before listening. This episode includes clips from the 1941 movie 'The Devil and Daniel Webster', the Simpsons episode 'Treehouse of Horror IV', several episodes of the Critic, PDQ Bach's oratorio 'Oedipus Tex', and probably some other things that I'm not remembering as I type this up. Jake makes some dad jokes, references Murder She Wrote, and schemes about what he would do if he were a teen witch. We're dipping into the vaults for a guest episode that we recorded for the Lifemark podcast back in 2017! Lifemark is a podcast that reviews Lifetime and Hallmark movies, and in this guest episode we talked about the Hallmark movie 'The Shunning'. How much shunning is enough shunning? What flavor of jello is this movie? These and other important issues of the day are discussed, along with a bunch of spoilers and whatnot. In the next episode, we'll be discussing the entire first season of HBO's 'His Dark Materials', with a focus on the final episode. This episode includes short clips of previous episodes about 'The Selection' by Kiera Cass and 'When You Reach Me' by Rebecca Stead, plus a short excerpt from 'The Heist' by the Lonely Island, not to mention the theme to 'The Facts of Life', for reasons. Smell that? That's the buttery smell of justice. This week, Ed is joined by Jacob of the Love YA Like Crazy podcast to discuss the 2001 live action Fox show, The Tick. Welcome to Love YA Like Crazy! You're listening to a special episode recorded by one of the two hosts, Jacob Haller, while he was at PodX in Nashville. This is the last episode in the series, which I think goes out on a high note! For this one, Jake talked to Vox Media's Allegra Frank, who is also a cohost of 'The Polygon Show', about Andrew Clements's 'Things Not Seen', and we were also joined by past guest Simone de Rochefort, which was very excellent! Note that the discussion includes spoilers for 'Things Not Seen', as well as Clements's 'Frindle' and Libba Bray's 'Beauty Queens', and the final episode of Game of Thrones. As mentioned in this discussion, Libba Bray wrote an article about the experience of trying to bring 'Beauty Queens' to the big screen. You can find it on ew.com. The episode contains a brief clip from The Polygon Show's bonus episode about the Game of Thrones finale, in which a couple of the podcast's cohosts, Ashley Oh and Simone de Rochefort, improvise a missing scene from the show. If you enjoy it, I recommend listening to the rest of the show, and other episodes of the Polygon Show in general! Plus, a correction: Jake mentioned that he and Carrie previously recorded an episode about 'Shiver' by Maggie Stiefvater, except I called it 'Frozen'. Anyway, if you want to hear Carrie and me critique the book, here's a link to the episode! We recorded in a space provided by Netflix, for which we thank them! Thanks to Shaenon K. What are your favorite books from young adulthood? And which of them included Witches? Join our conversation with Jacob Haller, our Intrepid Editor, that crosses over with his wonderful podcast, Love YA Like Crazy. We examine what YA is, our favorite examples of Witches in the books we loved (and still love), and (unfortunately) beard nipples. Sigh.

For this episode, Carrie and Jake talk about one of Carrie's favorite books: A.S. King's 'Everybody Sees The Ants'. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! We also talk about being taken to see the Vagina Monologues by your knitting group, plus the nostril size of horses, and one weird screenwriting trick that is guaranteed to get Jake to cry during the first five minutes of a movie. There's also some discussion of bullying, sexual assault, and suicide, which may be a bit intense in parts, so be aware of that. In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Plain Kate' by Erin Bow. This discussion was recorded in a space provided by Netflix, for which we thank them! We Got This's theme song, 'Podcasts Should (Not) Have A Theme Song', is by Mike Phirman. Thanks to Shaenon K. Jake recently went to the PodX podcasting conference in Nashville, and talked to some of the podcasters there about YA books, or books that were important to them when they were young. Starting tomorrow, and continuing every week until we run out of interviews, we'll be posting these in the feed. This episode gives you a little sneak peek at these discussions. Here's what you can look forward to: Lee LeBreton of 'Within the Wires' discussing Madeleine L'Engle's 'Many Waters' Jeffrey Cranor, also of 'Within the Wires', on Sarah Maria Griffin's 'Spare and Found Parts' and Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' Julie Shapiro, executive director of Radiotopia, and Carrie Poppy of 'Oh No Ross and Carrie', each talking about Louise Fitzhugh's 'Harriet the Spy' Hal Lublin of 'We Got This with Mark and Hal' talking about Piers Anthony's 'Xanth' books, among other things Ross Blocher of 'Oh No Ross and Carrie' discussing Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli Simone de Rochefort of 'The Polygon Show' talking about Libba Bray's 'A Great and Terrible Beauty' Allegra Frank, also of 'The Polygon Show', discussing Andrew Clements's 'Things Not Seen' These recordings were mostly made in a recording room that Netflix provided, except for Ross and Carrie's, which was recorded on my phone as we crouched down in a semi-secluded corner by an elevator. These are people from some of Jake's favorite podcasts, and he was very excited (and somewhat terrified) to talk to them! We hope you enjoy the discussions. Thanks to Shaenon K. Garrity for designing the Love YA Like Crazy icon, to the Sentimental Favorites for the use of their song 'Hey There', and to Charlie McCarron for the 'Love YA Like Crazy' tag. For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss The Owl Service by Alan Garner. Along the way, Jake sings a tribute to a listener named RobertTheBruceWayne, Carrie reveals whether she would rather be an owl or flowers, and we struggle with Welsh names (sorry). In the next episode, we'll be discussing American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. You can see one of the plates that inspired Alan Garner at https://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/whatson/whats-on/online/magical-books/the-owl-service , and you can see Tamar Williams tell the story of Blodeuwedd at https://youtu.be/Oysj9gIYqEY (this episode contains some short excerpts from this video). In this special surprise Christmas episode, Carrie and Jake talk about (among other things) Little Rabbit Foo Foo, horny robot giraffes with French accents, and how being a gasket builds character. We also explore the Eden Five Needs You 4 extended universe. From all of this, you may deduce that we read Andrew Smith's latest YA novel, Rabbit & Robot. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! In the next episode, we'll be discussing The Owl Service by Alan Garner. Tomorrow we'll be releasing a new episode in which we talk about 'Akata Witch' by Nnedi Okorafor with Hayden of the They See Me Rollin and That Gay Sh*t podcasts (but $5/month Patreon patrons can get it right now). For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss 'Seventeenth Summer' by Maureen Daly, a 1942 novel considered by some the first YA novel. The protagonist of the book is fairly innocent and chaste, but our discussion of the book is neither. (I don't know, that's just how it turned out!) We also talk about em dashes and exclamation points. Our discussion includes spoilers, so you may wish to read the book before listening. Before you do that, though, we recommend checking out Daly's short story 'Sixteen', which was written the year before Seventeenth Summer, won an O. Henry Award, and has a similar flavor. It is included in various short story collections, and I also found a copy at http://racheli.tripod.com/winter/sixteen.html . In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Akata Witch' by Nnedi Okorafor, as recommended by Hayden of the They See Me Rollin podcast. For this episode, Carrie and Jake talk about 'Hole in the Middle' by Kendra Fortmeyer, which was released in hardcover and ebook editions today! As always, spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening. Also, note that there's a fair amount of swearing. In the course of our discussion, we talk about metaphorical whatnots, fanfic, and banging, and our favorite gameshow, 'How Much The Worst Is Archie?', makes an unexpected return. Our thanks to Kendra Fortmeyer, and to Monica White of Soho Teen, for getting us pre-release copies of the book. In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Seventeenth Summer' by Maureen Daly, which is sometimes referred to as the first young adult novel. If you have any comments or suggestions, join us on our Goodreads page at https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/188869-love-ya-like-crazy, or tweet to us at https://twitter.com/loveYApod, or email us at podcast at loveYAlikecrazy.com. For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss Britta Lundin's debut novel 'Ship It'. They also talk about experiences at conventions, their (fairly minor) encounters with fanfic, the weird pornographic banner that Jake's downstairs neighbors hung up on their porch, movies based on video games, and all manner of other things. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! Both hosts are pretty ignorant about fanfic, so if you're interested in learning about it, or are curious about some of the things we mentioned in the episode, here are some links: The OTPodcast, a podcast by fanfic writers and readers about issues in fanfic -- the episode 'RPF: When Fanfiction Gets Real' is about 'real person fanfic' and may be of particular interest 'No Reservations: Narnia', in which Anthony Bourdain goes to Narnia '"No Reservations: Narnia," a Triumph of Anthony Bourdain Fan Fiction', a New Yorker article about the above work of fanfic and Bourdain's own reaction to it Sam Syke's 'Stages of a Toxic Fandom The 2013 incident where Jensen Ackles (who plays Dean Winchester in the the TV series 'Supernatural') was asked a question by a bisexual woman at a convention Q&A The woman who asked the question provided her own description and analysis of the incident Britta Lundin's list of characters for 'Ship It', back when she was writing the first draft in 2015 In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Seventeenth Summer' by Maureen Daly, which is sometimes referred to as the first young adult novel. For this episode, Jake flew to North Carolina so that he and Carrie could discuss 'The Hazel Wood' by Melissa Albert in person. Thanks to Jody [REDACTED] for recommending it, and to Alex [REDACTED] for her recommendation as well! We really appreciate you getting in touch with your suggestions. Also in this episode, Carrie decides against moving to Narnia, Jake analysis morality via Dungeons & Dragons, and we embrace ambiguity -- or do we? (Yes.) Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! Jake mentions an episode of the Please Don't Send Me Into Outer Space podcast. It's episode 128, 'Battle for the Stars'. Also mentioned: Lifemark and They See Me Rollin. Check 'em out! In the next episode, we'll be discussing Ship It by Britta Lundin. For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss Rebecca Stead's 2009 young adult novel, 'When You Reach Me'. They also experience some major high school flashbacks and talk about Carrie's new cat. We both really liked the book, and we recommend you read it before listening to the podcast, which contains our usual mix of spoilers and swearing! At one point in the discussion, Jake references a Mitchell and Webb comedy sketch, which you can see online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn1VxaMEjRU . For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss Katie Coyle's "Vivian Apple at the End of the World". Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! Jake describes this book as 'Left Behind for atheists', which seems designed to appeal to Carrie and Jake, and a lot of people clearly love it, but C&J really didn't. How can a book where the young female protagonist goes, sledgehammer in hand, to find the people responsible for the Rapture, fail to please the Love YA Like Crazy hosts? Listen to this episode to hear Carrie and Jake work their way through this question, and even find a few things they did like about the book. In the next episode, we'll be discussing Rebecca Stead's "When You Reach Me". We make a number of references to Neal Shusterman's book 'Unwind' in this episode. If you want to hear us talk about it in greater length, you can find it in episode 4 of this podcast in your favorite podcast listening app, or online at http://loveyalikecrazy.libsyn.com/unwind-by-neal-shusterman. For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss Lish McBride's "Hold Me Closer, Necromancer". How many uses do bowling bags have? What world are we going to leave for Keith Richards? What is the worst pun? How does Carrie feel about Goodreads? These questions are addressed, if not necessarily answered, in this episode. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Vivian Apple at the End of the World' by Katie Coyle. For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss 'The Dust of 100 Dogs' by A.S. King, along with our Saturday morning cartoon routine, 80s names, and whether being cursed to be reborn as 100 dogs would actually be pretty awesome. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! The next book we'll discuss is 'Hold Me Closer, Necromancer' by Lish McBride. For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss Libba Bray's 'Beauty Queens'. Jake also references James Nicoll's review of the book, and Libba Bray's essay in Entertainment Weekly about attempts to make a Beauty Queens movie. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! We spend a lot of time reading jokes from the book, such as the names of hit songs from the nonexistent band Boyz Will B Boyz, and also find some points where this 2011 novel is uncomfortably close to 2017's political reality. We meditate on wild women, volcanoes, stuffed lemurs, and how Carrie wishes this book existed when she, herself, was a teen. The book is very fun and good, and we hope you enjoy our discussion of it! In our next episode, we plan to talk about 'The Dust of 100 Dogs' by A.S. King. If you have any comments or suggestions, join us on our Goodreads page at https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/188869-love-ya-like-crazy, or tweet to us at https://twitter.com/loveYApod, or email us at podcast at loveYAlikecrazy.com. Carrie and Jake read the brand-new Stephanie Perkins novel, so it's time for another HOT TAKE SPECIAL in which we talk about her 'There's Someone Inside Your House', a YA horror/thriller novel! There's definitely a lot of spoilers, so you might want to read the book first! Jake also revels himself to be a million years old, Carrie gives a capsule review of corn pits, and we talk about authors we would like to be friends with. In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Beauty Queens' by Libba Bray (for real this time) -- check it out if you want to get a jump on things! For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss 'The Selection' by Kiera Cass. Jake enumerates all the times he swore at the book, Carrie is intrigued to learn that there's an official Selection Coloring Book, and in general we probably spend more time dissecting the sociological underpinnings of the book than we do talking about the plot. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Beauty Queens' by Libba Bray -- check it out if you want to get a jump on things! For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss 'Anne of Green Gables' by L.M. Montgomery. There is much reciting of favorite characters and incidents, and a certain amount of discussion of how Josie Pye is the worst. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! In the next episode, we'll be discussing The Selection by Kiera Cass. We anticipate this discussion being less uniformly positive, so, if you miss our usual rants, tune in next time! The most excellent Death Prattle podcast asked Carrie and Jake to come on and talk about a young adult novel, which we were happy to do! The book is The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds. Episode 50 is a big deal. So is having a new show on the Ear Trumpet Audio network. So, to celebrate both, we invited our newest podcast hosts, Jake and Carrie from Love YA Like Crazy to do an episode exchange. I don't think they knew quite what they were getting themselves into when they said yes, but here we are and they've suffered through The Shunning, starring Michael Landon Jr. Michelle and Stephanie will be recording an episode of Love YA Like Crazy in the coming weeks so follow Ear Trumpet Audio on Facebook and Twitter! Also, you should totally subscribe to Love YA Like Crazy, which you can do at www.loveyalikecrazy.com
For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss 'That Thing We Call A Heart' by Sheba Karim. Carrie provides some useful analysis of YA fiction, while Jake talks about pie and declares his love for the dad in this book. We also note that thinking genocide is cool is a bit of a red flag in a relationship. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! In the next episode, we'll be discussing 'Anne of Green Gables' by L.M. Montgomery, which you can get for free in various formats from Project Gutenberg. For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss 'Anna Dressed in Blood' by Kendare Blake, a sweet, yet gory, horror YA book that they both really enjoyed. They also record two introductions to the episode, talk about the importance of spelling out in advance what you want people to do if you get killed by a ghost, and Jake also tells a mildly gross story about an adventure he had while taking out the trash, Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! The final day for entries into their songwriting contest is Wednesday May 17. You can find the rules and other information at https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/18188266-songwriting-contest, and Jake will be posting daily haikus reminding people to enter the contest on the Love YA Like Crazy twitter account, @LoveYAPod. Happy new year! For this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss 'Boys Don't Knit (In Public)' by T.S. Easton. Fans of this book may want to know that we do eventually say a few nice things about the book, but it takes around fifteen minutes for us to get there. We also talk about plans for 2017, etsy dot com, beach reads, the Ender's Game of knitting, and yarn-related mysteries with punning titles, Carrie also apologizes to Jake's mom. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! In this episode, Carrie and Jake react to the recent US Presidential election -- there's a lot of swearing -- and then they discuss a very sweet, romantic book, 'Lola and the Boy Next Door' by Stephanie Perkins, which is just what the doctor ordered. In addition to the election talk, Jake lists the parts of the book that made him cry, Carrie declares her love for a fictional character, and we dissect the question of how many pies you could reasonably be expected to make in a couple of hours, anyway. The Pumpkin Ball makes a repeat appearance as well. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! In the next episode, by popular demand, we'll be discussing 'Boys Don't Knit (In Public)' by T.S. Easton. Carrie and Jake read the new Harry Potter book/play, 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child', and they have thoughts! In this, our first (and possibly only) HOT TAKE SPECIAL, we let you know what they are. There's definitely a lot of spoilers, so you might want to read the book first! We also struggle with technology (unfortunately, the audio quality of a big chunk of this episode is not up to our usual standards), have some feels, talk about 'It's A Wonderful Life', and make a feminist point about how hot Donna Reed is. In the next episode, we'll be discussing Jesse Andrews's 2016 book 'The Haters'. For this special bonus episode, Carrie and Jake are joined by Carrie's friend Sara to discuss the severely mediocre 2014 young adult movie 'Vampire Academy'. Carrie's cat Shooby also has a brief cameo, in which he graphically expresses his opinion of the movie. We talk about human cafetoriums, Carrie records an ASMR video for vampire victims, we warn about the dangers of flaming hounds, and at the end we recommend some actually good vampire-related media. We also talk about Vampire Academy's plot almost as much as its characters do, so, if you are concerned about spoilers, watch the movie before listening! (Or, alternatively, you can just watch the best scene in the movie.) In the next episode, we'll revisit Philip Pullman's excellent 'His Dark Materials' series by reading book 2 in that series, 'The Subtle Knife'. We have a Goodreads group now! Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! Welcome to episode 1 of "Love YA Like Crazy," recorded even before we had decided on a name for it! In this episode, Carrie and Jake discuss the 2013 young adult fantasy romance parody 'Awoken' by Serra Elinsen, which is available in paperback or for kindle from Amazon. Spoilers abound, so we recommend reading the book before listening! Also, lots of Elder Old Ones, FUBU shirts, Rhode Island talk, and swearing. In the next episode, we'll be discussing Daniel Pinkwater's book "Young Adult Novel", which Amazon has available in a couple of different collections, and we'll each be reading our additions to the epic story that is "Kevin Shapiro, Boy Orphan."
