In today's episode, Minister Artie and Deputy Minister Anna dive into the fascinating yet often overlooked reign of Edward VI. Though his rule lasted just six years—cut short by his death at age 15—Edward left an indelible mark on England's history. As a devout Protestant, Edward spearheaded significant reforms, including the introduction of an English-language Bible—a move so controversial it sparked rebellion. Under his rule, England took major strides toward becoming a firmly Protestant nation. And let's not forget his dramatic decision to alter the line of succession, naming his cousin Lady Jane Grey as his heir to bypass his Catholic sister, Mary. But why was Edward so passionately Protestant? Who wielded real power while he was still a child? And what drove him to gamble with the crown's future?Join us as we uncover the answers to these questions and explore the brief but transformative reign of England's boy king. This episode is available to watch as a video on YouTube. The Ministry of History offers more than just podcast episodes! Hayao Miyazaki directs the latest film from Studio Ghibli, 'The Boy and the Heron' (2023). This Oscar-winning film serves a magnum opus for a venerated animator nearing the end of his career, reflecting on his early life in this quasi-autobiographical fantasy. Mahito Maki leaves his home in Tokyo following the death of his mother in a World War II firebombing. Raised in a wealthy family, Mahito struggles to get along with his peers at his new rural school. He spends his time exploring his maternal family's palatial estate, including an abandoned tower that holds a profound secret. A mysterious gray heron beckons him to enter the tower, and when it appears his aunt-turned-stepmother has gone to the tower as well, Mahito hurries after her, plunging headfirst into a glimpse at destiny itself. It's a magical, fantastical, confection-filled week on the BFG podcast. Host Neal Pollack welcomes in always-guest Stephen Garrett to talk about 'Wonka,' starring Timothée Chalamet as a truly child-friendly young Willy Wonka, who the movie re-invents as a gee-whiz paragon of goodness and light. Stephen liked the movie more on the show than he did in his review. Neal found it cloying and cynically calculated. They were deeply split on Hugh Grant's Oompa-Loompa, who Neal enjoyed but Stephen found weird. In general, 'Wonka' seems to have generated more debated among our two critics than it deserves. Listen up, and see it for yourself, and join the conversation. There is no split, however, about 'Godzilla Minus One,' which Neal proclaims one of the year's best pictures. Our critic London Faust isn't quite as enthusiastic, but does appreciate how GMO manages to create some human-scale characters worth caring about, even while it does deploy a somewhat hammy Japanese acting style. Neal appreciated the historical depth of the screenplay and frankly found Godzilla himself quite terrifying. You must see this film.'The Boy and the Heron', on the other hand, is only for Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli complete list. Critic Pablo Gallaga and Neal both admire the movie's beauty and off-kilter character design, but agree the world-building and the story just aren't up to the usual snuff. This film feels more serious and message-y than Miyazaki's previous animes, and it suffers from the old master trying to teach us a lesson. But we're not trying to teach you a lesson at BFG, we're just trying to present the best pop-culture podcast on Earth. And we succeed, every week. Enjoy the show!
For episode 167, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes (Steve Prusakowski continues behind the scenes as producer and technical guru, though look for a possible on-mic return next week, after having to sit this one out). This time around, we're talking about two recent releases that both of us have seen. They're The Boy and the Heron (reviewed here), which we perhaps have minority opinions on, as well as May December (reviewed here). There's also Golden Globes chatter, coming off of the nominations (my predictions are here). Plus, you can hear what Myles is getting me, and you all in concert, for the holidays. It's a good episode, if I do say so myself... As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 167th one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

On this week's episode, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) discuss the Golden Globes and the odd fact that the same company owns not only the Globes but also the three biggest trade publications in Hollywood, meaning that studios will feel pressured to pay the press that covers them hefty For Your Consideration spots in exchange for awards consideration. Seems bad! Then they review what is, supposedly, Japanese animation giant Hayao Miyazaki's final film, The Boy and the Heron, the number one movie at the box office last weekend. Make sure to swing by Bulwark+ on Friday for our bonus episode on subtitles, dubbing, and one good thing AI might be able to do. And if you enjoyed this episode please share it with a friend!
On episode 211 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributor Dan Bayer to discuss the four acting categories within the 2023 Oscar race. Before we get into the Oscar conversation, two titles came out this past weekend that have sparked a ton of acclaim and conversation, Yorgos Lanthimos's Poor Things and Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron. Considered by many to be two of the best films of the year, Ryan and Dan briefly dive into both, talking about the themes these two director's present in their respective new films, as well as the stunning visual language both offer. So far in their runs at the box office, both have been a success and look to continue to pick up critic's and industry prizes throughout the rest of the season. Once they are done talking about the new release, Ryan and Dan switch their attention to the four Oscar acting categories. While there are frontrunners in each category so far, no one has yet stuck out as clear winners this early in the race. With this, they dive deep into a long, detailed conversation about all four of the major categories, who they think they are confident could get in, who they are less sure about, and who are the long shots that need some help from critics groups or other outside help to get back into the mix. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h45m. We will be back next week to talk about our reactions to the 2023 Golden Globe nominations, and talk a little bit about Wonka. Till then, let's get into it. This podcast is supported by Amazon MGM Studios presenting AIR, from award-winning director Ben Affleck and starring Matt Damon, Chris Messina, and Viola Davis. The film follows the gamble of an unconventional team and the uncompromising vision of a mother who knows her son's worth. RogerEbert.com calls it "a timeless underdog story of grit, dreams, and moxie" and Variety says it's "this generation's ‘Jerry Maguire.' AIR is awards eligible in all categories. Music: “Modern Fashion” from HAWWK and AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

Initially conceived as a short film exclusively for in-flight guests of Japan Airlines, the film eventually grew in ambition and scope and now stands as one of Miyazaki's most underrated, visually transcendent masterpieces. We discuss the film's many classic Hollywood touchpoints, including the films of Howard Hawks, Victor Fleming, and John Ford and how these influences create a sense of fantasy more grounded that other Miyazaki works. Then, we discuss the film's setting amidst the rising tide of fascism in the Adriatic and its connection to the moving character portrait at its core. Finally, we discuss how 'Porco Rosso' (perhaps more than any other film) suggests some of the director's late period affinities in works like 'The Wind Rises'.Plus: We talk Miyazaki's latest work 'The Boy & The Heron', which we have all had the chance to see ahead of its wide release in the US Friday, 12/8/23. Episode 56 Doe ID 'The Boy In The Box' Joseph Augustus ZarelliOn February 25, 1957, the badly beaten and naked dead body of a little boy was found discarded in a box on the side of Susquehanna Road, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His death was ruled a homicide, and police worked feverishly to ID him using all of the tools available to them at the time. Although some of the clues that they had to work with seemed promising, they failed to ID the child, and he was buried without his name. Over the decades that followed, the story of 'The Boy In The Box' touched countless people. Finally, in the Fall of 2022, DNA & genealogy combined to solve the mystery of who this child was. He was identified as Joseph Augustus Zarelli. But finding out who Joseph was was only one part of the mission, police also wanted to find out who killed him and discarded him like trash. To date, that has proven to be a challenge, and that part of the mystery remains unsolved. We may not know who murdered The Boy In The Box, but we now know his name; to be Joseph Augustus Zarelli and this is his story. For all things DNA: ID, visit the show's homepage:DNAIDpodcast.comTo Support DNA: ID on Patreon, visit this link:https://www.patreon.com/DNAIDTo buy DNA ID Merch, visit this link:https://www.customizedgirl.com/s/dnaidpodcastFollow DNA: ID on Social Mediaon Twitter at- https://twitter.com/DNAIDPodcaston Facebook at- https://www.facebook.com/DNA-ID-True-Crime-Podcast-103667495017418on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/dnaidpodcast/

We know a lot about the man Hendrix became: the paratrooper who played in a band during his free time, the backup player for musicians like Sam Cooke, BB King, and Little Richard, and eventually, the world renowned rockstar. But there's a chapter of Hendrix's life that has gone largely unexplored: his childhood. A new production from playwright and Seattle Children's Theatre Creative Director Idris Goodwin is inspired by Hendrix's childhood growing up in Seattle's Central District. It's called “The Boy Who Kissed the Sky.”
In this one-off special documentary linked to her recent series 'The Boy in the Woods', Winifred Robinson brings together Lord Laming who led an inquiry into Rikki Neave's death with Dame Louise Casey, who oversaw the Troubled Families Programme, and Polly Curtis, whose written extensively about what is happening in the care system today. The programme reports on current best-practice and how it can be replicated and examines what's happened in the years since Rikki's death. What is our baseline here and what are we trying to achieve? And is there an acceptable level of risk? There were a whole series of investigations in the aftermath of the death of six-year-old Rikki Neave and promises in Parliament that lessons would be learned. His case is in the news again because his killer has been convicted after 27 years. The many layers of sadness and disadvantage in Rikki's life are explored in the Winifred Robinson 10-part Radio 4 series. The case is a marker for more than a quarter of a century of lost children and good intentions. Rikki was on the register of children at risk. His mother had asked for him to be taken into care, saying she couldn't control him, couldn't cope. He was playing truant from school on the day he died, a vulnerable child, an easy target. Jurors at his trial say that one of the saddest aspects is the knowledge that children like Rikki are still dying today, that social services inquiries keep coming to the same conclusions about poor information-sharing, bad management and overloaded, inexperienced staff. Winifred's three guests have extensive experience of what has gone wrong in the past and what we could be changing to improve the life chances for the most vulnerable children in society. This is a unique opportunity for listeners to consider some of the wider aspects raised in the series, The Boy in the Woods Lord Herbert Laming has been a social worker, a director of social services, head of the Social Services Inspectorate. He was involved in Rikki's case. He chaired the public inquiry into the murder of Victoria Climbie. The government asked him to review child protection after the death of Baby P, Peter Connolly in 2007. Baroness Louise Casey has been finding practical solutions to difficult social problems for years now. She led the Anti-Social Behaviour Unit at the Home Office, the Troubled Families Programme, the investigation into the Rotherham Child Sexual Exploitation scandal. Polly Curtis is a journalist who's just published a book, Behind Closed Doors: Why We Break Up Families and How to Mend Them. She knows what's happening in the care system now, what's changed, what could be better.
