Felicity Beckett speaks to director Dylan Hewitt about his new film, The Nettle Dress, which is playing at Picturehouse Cinemas as part of our Green Screen programme. Textile artist Allan Brown spends seven years making a dress by hand just from the fibre of locally foraged stinging nettles. This is ‘hedgerow couture', the greenest of slow fashion but also his medicine. It's how Allan survives the passing of his wife, leaving him and their four children bereft, and how he finds a beautiful way to honour her. Stunningly filmed by award-winning documentary maker Dylan Howitt, The Nettle Dress follows Allan's journey through seasons and years, foraging, spinning, weaving, cutting and sewing the cloth, before finally sharing a healing vision of the dress back in the woods where the nettles were picked, worn by one of his daughters. A labour of love in the truest sense, The Nettle Dress is a modern-day fairytale and hymn to the healing power of nature and slow craft. It's one story representing a huge groundswell of people rediscovering the joys of making. Actor Mark Rylance called the film “Exquisite and inspiring, beautiful and helpful for anyone suffering loss or grief”. "Grasping the Nettle' is at the heart of the film. Making a dress this way is a mad act of will and artistry but also devotional, with every nettle thread representing hours of mindful craft. Over seven years Allan is transformed by the process just as the nettles are. It's a kind of alchemy: transforming nettles into cloth, grief into beauty, protection and renewal. A labour of love, in the truest sense of the phrase, The Nettle Dress is a modern-day fairytale and hymn to the healing power of nature and slow craft."This week is our one hundred and ninety ninth episode of the Accidental Gods podcast. It's been quite a ride, and to celebrate the end of our second century, my partner, Faith, has come to join me as host, and we have two guests, textile designer Allan Brown and Dylan Howitt who is a filmmaker with over 20 years of making documentaries and features for the BBC, Netflix, Sky, Discovery - if you've heard of them, Dylan's worked with them. Allan was exploring how we could feed and clothe ourselves as we head towards a world of localism and increasing self reliance. A journey that began with a simple question - namely 'how can we clothes ourselves?' - led to his spending seven years of his life making a a dress from the fibres of the nettles that grew locally. He harvested them in his local wood, made the fibre, spun over fourteen thousand feet of it, hand wove it, and then made it into a truly beautiful dress for his daughter. It was an extraordinary process of experimentation, discovery and ensoulment - a journey into possibility that would be hard to match in our current, frenetic world. And we know about this: the patience of it, the wonder, the loss, the grief, the resilience, the alchemy… the sheer magic, because Dylan made a film, 'The Nettle Dress' which also took 7 years and is also a process of emergence and ensoulment and magic and discovery. The film is one of the most profoundly moving I've seen in a long time: it's deep time brought into being, it offers connection and profound attention and intention as it follows Al's profound intention and attention. It's so, so different from what we normally see, so grounding - and when we had the chance to talk to Al and Dylan, it made sense for Faith to join me: she's the maker in our partnership, she's been a textile maker and designer and she thinks differently than I do in many ways. So this is a joint endeavour and all the stronger for it. Dylan Howitt Bio Dylan Howitt is a filmmaker with many years of experience telling compelling stories from all around the world, personal and political, always from the heart. Twice BAFTA-nominated he's produced and directed for BBC, Netflix, ITV and Channel 4 amongst many others. His latest feature documentary, The Nettle Dress, follows textile artist Allan Brown on a seven-year odyssey making a dress from the fibre of locally foraged stinging nettles. Allan Brown Bio Allan Brown (Hedgerow Couture) is a textile artist from Brighton, East Sussex, in the UK. Working primarily with sustainable natural fibres like nettles, flax, hemp and wool, Allan takes these raw materials and transforms them into beautiful cloth with the aim of creating functional, durable clothing that draws lightly from the land, reflecting the fibres and colours of the landscape he lives and works in. On average, adults aged 21 and older drink almost 30 gallons of beer per year in the United States. If I had to guess, I maybe drink a gallon or two, so others drink way more than 30 gallons per year to even out people like me. Since it's such a popular beverage, and more and more people avoid gluten, many people wonder, "Can you drink beer on a gluten-free diet?" In this article, I'll briefly address what gluten is and how it shows up in beer. I'll also review how you can follow a strict, gluten-free diet and still drink it now and then. Finally, I'll wrap it up with some of the best gluten-free beers to try. Of course, I'm not advocating drinking alcohol. It can lead to numerous health problems, even if you don't drink to get drunk. But I want to help people who drink responsibly and do so occasionally as part of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle. What is gluten? Gluten is a group of proteins found in certain grains, including wheat, barley, and rye.Shewry, P. R., & Halford, N. G. (2002). Cereal seed storage proteins: structures, properties and role in grain utilization. Journal of Experimental Botany, 53(370), 947-958. It's the "glue" that gives bread its chewy texture and helps it rise. In beer production, barley is a common ingredient, and hence, so is gluten. Some people react negatively to gluten. Reactions range from mild sensitivity to severe intolerance, known as Celiac Disease.Ludvigsson, J. F., Leffler, D. A., Bai, J. C., Biagi, F., Fasano, A., Green, P. H., ... & Ciacci, C. (2013). The Oslo definitions for coeliac disease and related terms. Gut, 62(1), 43-52. These reactions can lead to many problems, including digestive issues, fatigue, and even damage to the intestines, in the case of Celiac. Gluten consumption can also lead to cognitive problems. Symptoms of gluten sensitivity or allergy include: Headache Joint pain Muscle pain or twitches Numbness in limbs Chronic fatigue Foggy headedness Anemia Difficulty breathing Depression Abdominal pain Nausea Bloating and gas Diarrhea or constipation Irritable bowel syndrome Muscle wasting Weight loss Hypoglycemia Type I diabetes Psoriasis Autism Schizophrenia Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Skin rash Rhinitis / asthma Ingrown hairs Oligo- or polymenorrhea Hallucinations Beyond the issues above, gluten may cause mental problems, including: Ataxia Appetite stimulation Brain-active exorphins Peripheral neuropathy Epilepsy General cognitive impairment Dementia Psychiatric disorders If you want to read more about these gluten-related health problems, check out my article Gluten: Health Concerns for Your Brain and Body. Gluten and Beer Most beers are brewed from barley, which is malted and fermented along with water, hops, and yeast.Bamforth, C. (2009). Beer: Tap into the Art and Science of Brewing. Oxford University Press, USA. Gluten in the barley makes its way into the final product. Some beers can contain significant amounts of gluten, especially those brewed with wheat or other high-gluten grains. While it can be challenging to quantify the exact amount of gluten in a serving of beer due to variations in brewing processes, some sources estimate it to range anywhere between 15-60 milligrams per liter.Colgrave, M. L., Goswami, H., Howitt, C. A., & Tanner, G. J. (2012). What is in a beer? Proteomic characterization and relative quantification of hordein (gluten) in beer. Journal of proteome research, 11(1), 386-396. A 12-ounce (354ml) beer serving could contain approximately 5-20 milligrams of gluten. Comparatively, a slice of wheat bread contains approximately 4.8 grams of gluten, far higher than the content in beer.Gallagher, E., Gormley, T. R., & Arendt, E. K. (2004). Recent advances in the formulation of gluten-free cereal-based products. Trends in Food Science & Technology, 15(3-4), 143-152. However,

On the tenth episode of Enterprise Software Innovators, hosts Evan Reiser (Abnormal Security) and Saam Motamedi (Greylock Partners) talk with Scott Howitt, CDO at Ultimate Kronos Group. Scott has been a CIO, CTO, CISO, and CDO across several industries during his career, giving him a unique perspective into the world of deploying technological initiatives at large companies. Today, Scott joins the show to discuss how CIOs and CDOs can become ‘chief bridge builders' within organizations to optimize business outcomes, create a culture of innovation, and evaluate startups to form great partnerships.Quick hits from Scott:On CIOs speaking multiple languages: “As techies, we're really good at not having much respect for people who don't understand all the techno jargon that we use, guess what? The CFO is thinking the same thing when you don't understand EBITDA and how revenue is recognized and what ARR is and what PEPM is. You need to be like a UN translator. You have to know multiple different languages to be a successful executive."On CIOs understanding the business: “Sometimes, you're way up above the business, doing a strategic plan, but occasionally, you've got to dive down and get exactly where the troops are and understand what they're doing. I think too often technologists are like, ‘Hey, I'm just a technologist. I don't need to understand the business.' You have no purpose in life if it were not for the business, and too often, technologists forget that they're here to support the business, not the other way around.”On how CIOs and CDOs can evaluate startups to form great partnerships: "Look at who's on their board, who's investing in them. But then, go ahead and have a dialogue too. My thing with all the vendors is it needs to be the CEO, the CTO, or the Chief Product Officer. Otherwise, I don't want to talk to him because I want to get the heartbeat of where this company is going, what's your vision, what's your exit strategy, all those things. Because if it's a partnership, let's not worry about the price. It is the last thing I get to. It's how we would come together and work together if we formed a partnership. And it should be a partnership, not a vendor-consumer relationship.”Recent book recommendations: The Phoenix Project by Gene Kim, Kevin Behr, and George SpaffordHue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam by Mark Bowden--Like what you hear? We kicked open our plastic lawn chairs and sat down with David Howitt, author of “Heed Your Call” and founder/CEO of the Meriwether Group. David believes the modern day hero is the entrepreneur – the person willing to launch out into the unknown and face a myriad of challenges to bring to the world a new idea, product or resource that shapes culture, changes lives and brings more good in our communities. In this episode he unpacks this idea and inspires us to leave what is familiar and launch out into the unknown – just to bring something new into the world.
