After last week's episode with Carrie Poppy, I got a number of responses saying we might have been a little too dismissive of the evolutionary case for repressed memory. As it turns out, Dr. Jennifer Freyd, has developed a theory that could account for something like it. Yes, that Jennifer Freyd, the accuser whose story was told in The Cut's article that started this whole thing! The entire situation is as fascinating as it is tragic for virtually everyone involved, but Dr. Lindsey Osterman is here to give us a more complete understanding of the science!
A recent article in The Cut discusses allegations of sexual abuse which were made based on "recovered memories." Regardless of the truth or falsity of the accusations, the science of memory may have been very badly represented in this article, to harmful effect. Carrie of Oh No Ross and Carrie breaks it down for us! Complete with a Satanic Panic tie-in. (Link to the letters.)
Comedian Natalie Palamides joins Bullseye this week to talk with guest host Carrie Poppy! Natalie and Carrie talk about Natalie's new Netflix special Nate: A One Man Show, what her parents think of her raunchy stand-up, and choosing to commit to your art over commercial projects. Plus, Natalie tells us about the occupational hazards of wrestling random audience members on stage.
We're joined by comedian and actor Michael Ian Black on an all-new Bullseye! He's a founding member of the comedy groups The State and Stella as well as a regular on the kind of talking head pop culture shows that were all the rage in the late aughts. When he's not busy making us laugh on stage and screen, Michael is a prolific author. His first book, a children's book, was titled Chicken Cheeks and was the first of many books geared toward kids. He's also written several books for adults. His latest is A Better Man. It's a touching long-form letter to his teenage son about the perils and pitfalls of manhood and what it means to be a man in a society that often attempts to pigeonhole what manhood is allowed to look like. Black chats with guest host Carrie Poppy about raising a son and daughter, the lessons he's learned and how his mother's tumultuous past impacted how he sees the world.
In this episode of Sacred Tension I'm joined by Carrie Poppy. Carrie Poppy is a journalist, host, podcaster, and speaker who examines everything at the corner of belief and behavior. Her investigative journalism podcast, “Oh No, Ross and Carrie” was the first podcast ever nominated for a journalism award by the L.A. Press Club, and her dark Disney fancast, “Hidden Mickeys” was featured as a show to listen to by BBC Radio. Carrie’s work has been featured in The Guardian, Vice, Skeptical Inquirer, Gizmodo, Boing Boing, Tech Times, Mental Floss, The AV Club, and others. Her TED talk, “A Scientific Approach to the Paranormal,” has been viewed over 1.5 million times, and featured on NPR’s TED Radio Hour. Over the course of her work, Carrie has gone undercover in Scientology, Mormonism, the Raëlians, 9/11 Truthers, flat earthers, occultists, ufologists, and more. She has been fire-cupped, chakra-aligned, palm-read, and exorcised. She has completed the Master Cleanse, flushed out her colon, taken “Gorgeous Pills,” walked across hot coals, and drunk her own urine. She has explored Charles Manson’s nonprofit, as well as televangelist Peter Popoff’s mail-order healing. She even yelled at wet rice for a week, to see if water is affected by emotions. Carrie earned her master’s degree in journalism from the University of Southern California, where she served as the Director’s Scholar, and received her bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of the Pacific. She lives in Los Angeles with her senior rescued chihuahua mix, Ella. Hari Kunzru is a novelist and journalist. He is the author of several novels including: My Revolutions, Gods Without Men, and White Tears. His latest novel is called Red Pill. The book's protagonist is an unnamed narrator. He's a writer in Brooklyn, married with kids. In the back of his mind, he can't shake this feeling: something bad is about to happen in the world. He gets a job in Berlin, a residency. The time alone only invites more demons in. It sends him on a journey around the internet, to reactionary message boards and old blogs. Then, it sends him on a journey around the world, into stone huts in Scotland and Parisian hotels. By the end of the book you might start to wonder if his fears were justified. Hari joins guest host Carrie Poppy to talk about where he got the idea for this new book, the dark web, online privacy, and similarities between his real life experiences and Red Pill's narrator.
In case you haven't heard: Bill and Ted are back! And today we're joined by Alex Winter. Alex talks with Carrie Poppy about his new movie Bill & Ted Face the Music, his documentary about former child stars, Showbiz Kids, and why he left acting for 25 years. Plus, he'll reveal what the "S" in Bill S. Preston Esq. stands for. San Dimas High School Football rules!
Maximum Fun's Carrie Poppy (Oh No, Ross and Carrie!) interviews comic actor and writer Julia Sweeney! You probably saw Julia's work on Saturday Night Live in the early '90s alongside Chris Rock, Dana Carvey, and Chris Farley. These days, you can see her on Showtime's Work in Progress. In it, she plays a fictionalized version of herself who has to answer for the damage done by one of her most well known SNL characters: Pat. You can also catch her on the Hulu comedy Shrill. Julia plays Vera, mother to main character Annie. The show talks a lot about body image issues – and how family, especially our parents can sometimes exacerbate those feelings. Carrie Poppy chats with Julia about her work on stage. Plus, her complicated relationship with SNL's Pat and how they fit into Work in Progress. We also get into the type of mother she is in real life in relation to her character on Shrill.
This week, Nadia and Steve talk to journalist and podcast host Carrie Poppy (@CarriePoppyYES) about the specific topic of investigating the science behind paranormal activity. What was Carrie's ghost encounter, and what are the scientific explanations for ghosts? Why did Steve stay on the haunted Queen Elizabeth? Why does Nadia's dad believe a ghost is haunting him across the pond? Let's do this again some time!

Welcome to Love YA Like Crazy! You're listening to a special episode recorded by one of the two hosts, Jacob Haller, while he was at PodX in Nashville. For this episode, Jake talked to Ross Blocher and Carrie Poppy of 'Oh No Ross and Carrie' about some books that were important to them when they were young. Note that the discussion includes spoilers for Louise Fitzhugh's 'Harriet the Spy' and its sequel 'The Long Secret', and 'Maniac Magee' by Jerry Spinelli. This discussion was recorded on Jake's phone in a semi-secluded corner by an elevator at PodX, and we apologize for the resulting sound quality. Thanks to Shaenon K. Garrity for designing the Love YA Like Crazy icon, to the Sentimental Favorites for the use of their song 'Hey There', and to Charlie McCarron for the 'Love YA Like Crazy' tag. Wow. The timeline of Talko Bell will be divided into "pre-Natalie interview" and "post-Natalie interview!" Not only is she one of the funniest performers working today, she loved talking with us about food! We discuss everything from friendship to ethnicity and regional food favorites. Jake recently went to the PodX podcasting conference in Nashville, and talked to some of the podcasters there about YA books, or books that were important to them when they were young. Starting tomorrow, and continuing every week until we run out of interviews, we'll be posting these in the feed. This episode gives you a little sneak peek at these discussions. Here's what you can look forward to: Lee LeBreton of 'Within the Wires' discussing Madeleine L'Engle's 'Many Waters' Jeffrey Cranor, also of 'Within the Wires', on Sarah Maria Griffin's 'Spare and Found Parts' and Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' Julie Shapiro, executive director of Radiotopia, and Carrie Poppy of 'Oh No Ross and Carrie', each talking about Louise Fitzhugh's 'Harriet the Spy' Hal Lublin of 'We Got This with Mark and Hal' talking about Piers Anthony's 'Xanth' books, among other things Ross Blocher of 'Oh No Ross and Carrie' discussing Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli Simone de Rochefort of 'The Polygon Show' talking about Libba Bray's 'A Great and Terrible Beauty' Allegra Frank, also of 'The Polygon Show', discussing Andrew Clements's 'Things Not Seen' These recordings were mostly made in a recording room that Netflix provided, except for Ross and Carrie's, which was recorded on my phone as we crouched down in a semi-secluded corner by an elevator. These are people from some of Jake's favorite podcasts, and he was very excited (and somewhat terrified) to talk to them! We hope you enjoy the discussions. Thanks to Shaenon K. We find illustrious podcaster and fellow Disney fan, Carrie Poppy (@CarriePoppyYES) in the vault for the medieval, magical education of a kid named Wart (obvious nickname for Arthur). The origin story of Marty and Doc Brown from Back to the Future (not really, but basically yes- think about it!), Merlin leads wart on a series of animal themed lessons that kind of, sort of add up to an adventure and eventually get us to a sword in a stone.
In this episode, Thomas and Andrew talk to the co-host of one of their favorite podcasts, Oh No Ross and Carrie, along with the show's lawyer, Matthew Strugar -- proving once and for all that other podcasts need lawyers, too. First, however, Andrew breaks down a recent viral story about whether Donald Trump's Twitter account can be a "designated public forum," a term our listeners should remember from Episode #73's discussion with Travis Wester. In the main segment, Carrie Poppy sits down for a fun and wide-ranging interview about her job and the potential legal perils that stem from investigating pseudoscience, the paranormal, and potentially dangerous religious cults. After that, the much-beloved "Are You A Cop?" segment returns with a question from listener Brian Babcock about how to deal with standard-form contracts. Finally, we end with the answer to Thomas Takes the Bar Exam Question #27, which was a complicated fact pattern involving drunk driving, punitive damages, insurance limits, and cross-examination. Did Thomas break his streak? Listen and find out. And, as always, we'll release a new #TTTBE question this Friday, and, as always, answer that question the following Tuesday. Don't forget to play along by following our Twitter feed (@Openargs) and/or our Facebook Page and quoting the Tweet or Facebook Post that announces this episode along with your guess and reason(s), and don't forget that patrons who support us at any level get early access to the answers (and usually a fun post analyzing the question in more detail). Ross and Carrie choose their own religion! Ross Blocher and Carrie Poppy are the hosts of “Oh No, Ross and Carrie!”, a podcast where they investigate religion, fringe science, and other spiritual events by immersing themselves in them. On this episode, we talked about what they’ve learned from their investigations, what has turned out to be surprisingly true, and their own journeys from evangelical Christian backgrounds to the skeptics they are today (even though Carrie hates that term). We also talk about the nature of belief, critical thinking, laughter yoga, and dog birthdays. Check out their podcast on iTunes & Stitcher and at ohnopodcast.com, and find out more about Ross at rossblocher.com and Carrie at carriepoppy.com!

I feel obligated to say that I was very tired when we record this. I had just gotten off a plane from New York to LA, and Carrie Poppy was kind enough to let me crash on her couch for the night. We turned on the mics and started podcasting almost immediately, because hey, why not? We sat at the dining room table, which was littered with all manner of herbs and over the counter remedies. Research for the latest episode of Oh No, Ross and Carrie, the Max Fun podcast Poppy hosts with fellow skeptic Ross Blocher, which features a broad range of investigations, from organized religion to oxygen bars. The episode the pair were currently preparing for on the topic of nootropic smart drugs was a relative walk in the park after a multi-part series in which the pair infiltrated the Hollywood wing of the Church of Scientology, an act that garnered the attention of a number of best of podcasting lists -- and the church itself. Naturally, we start the conversation with talk of plane crashes.

The Cubs fan tells us about some of the lesser-known Jewish figures in America’s national pastime, why he thinks we need a museum dedicated to Jews in baseball, and when we can expect a brick-and-mortar outpost. Our Gentile of the Week is Carrie Poppy—writer, actress, and co-host of the podcast Oh No Ross and Carrie, which investigates fringe science and religious groups. She tells us the wackiest movement she’s encountered and what she thinks draws people to these kinds of groups. We love to hear from you! Email us at Unorthodox@tabletmag.com. "We show up so you don't have to." That's the tagline for the Oh No, Ross and Carrie podcast. If you've ever wanted to get out and experience all the world's weirdness for yourself, this podcast might not be for you. If, however, you've been dying to have other people put themselves through that and then tell you about it, you're in the right place. Skeptics Ross Blocher and Carrie Poppy are ready to experience it all (or almost all) for you and share all the best stories afterward. On this week's Humanist Hour, Carrie and Ross join us to talk about how they got started, the roles compassion and honesty play in their skepticism, and a few of their favorite episodes. They also tell us just what they are and aren't willing to do for an episode.
