Double, double toil and trouble! Fire burn and cauldron bubble! Haunted by witches, ghostly daggers, murder, Macbeth is an obvious classic. But why? Will and James discuss Shakespeare's finest marriage story, the power of ambition and guilt, and a short play packed with an improbable concentration of amazing soliloquies, phrases, and speeches. // Credits // Intro Music: Jon Sayles, "The Witches' Dance" (composed by anonymous); Outro Music: Jon Sayles, “Saltarello” (composed by anonymous); Illustrative Excerpts: Judi Dench, "Thames Shakespeare Collection: Macbeth", dir. Philip Casson (1979); "Macbeth," dir. Roman Polanski (1971); Alan Cumming, "Macbeth," dirs. John Tiffany and Andrew Goldberg (2013); Patrick Stewart, "Macbeth," dir. Rupert Goold (2010)
John A. Tiffany grew up in California's Santa Ynez Valley and later graduated from Pepperdine University's International Affairs program. He speaks all over the world and appears frequently on television, radio, and film, and is a frequent pundit in newspapers, magazines, and online. He is the author of Eleanor Lambert: Still Here and Dawn: The Career of the Legendary Fashion Retailer Dawn Mello.
John Tiffany a multi award-winning theatre director is from the same village in West Yorkshire as Simon Armitage. They both grew up watching their parents in amateur dramatic shows in the Marsden Parochial Hall, but it was a chance trip to a professional production years later that turned John's attentions away from medical school and back to the stage. He's the person behind some of the most acclaimed theatrical productions of the last two decades, including Pinocchio at The National Theatre, Road at the Royal Court, the smash hit Broadway musical Once, the National Theatre of Scotland's Black Watch and more recently, the hottest ticket in the West End, The Cursed Child. His shows regularly achieve both critical and popular acclaim, an extremely important factor in his work. In the shed the conversation drifts from what makes a good director to what makes a good joke - and there are plenty of them! From fathers to future plans and from creativity to the classroom, where John has chosen to give something back. Produced by Susan Roberts
The Poet Laureate Simon Armitage returns for a second series of his podcast. From his wooden shed in the garden, surrounded on all sides by the Pennine Hills and the Pennine weather, this summer he's working on a set of haikus inspired by the landscape around him and the people who drop by. Any distraction is welcome, even encouraged, to talk about poetry, creativity, music, art, sheds, sherry and the countryside. “For too long I've been in the shed on my own, writing haiku, staring intensely at flowers and clouds, so I'm thrilled to be finally throwing back the door, dusting down the spare chair and sharing real live conversation with clever and creative people” – Simon Armitage. Guitarist Johnny Marr, accompanied by his 12-string acoustic, is Simon's first guest. Later in the series the Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen, West End theatre director John Tiffany, broadcaster, DJ and gardener Jo Whiley, author J.K. Rowling and poet Imtiaz Dharker all pay Simon a visit. Produced by Sue Roberts.

Episode 021: The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: John Tiffany Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Tennessee Williams breakthrough play The Glass Menagerie is a very personal portrait of Williams' own flawed family. It first opened on Broadway in March 1945 to rave reviews, it's box office success catapulting its 34-year old author to fame and fortune. The play is now a standard on educational curricula and theatrical programs, loved for its heart-wrenching portrayal of the hopes and disappointments of its characters, and admired for its theatrical technique and poetic dramatic language. The play was brilliantly staged in 2013 on Broadway in a production directed by John Tiffany, which was revived in 2017 in London's West End, and I am absolutely delighted to be joined in this episode by the director himself, John Tiffany, to share his insights into this enduring classic.

Hello, Thanks for Listening J. K. Rowling, is a British writer and philanthropist. She is best known for writing the Harry Potter fantasy series, which has won multiple awards and sold more than 500 million copies. J.K. Rowling first had the idea for Harry Potter while delayed on a train travelling from Manchester to London King's Cross in 1990. Over the next five years, she began to plan out the seven books of the series. She wrote mostly in longhand and amassed a mountain of notes, many of which were on scraps of paper. The Harry Potter books have since broken many records. In 2007 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows became the fastest-selling book ever, selling 2.65 million in the first 24 hours in the UK. The Harry Potter series is now published in 80 languages, and over 500 million copies have been sold across the world. J.K. Rowling has also written three companion volumes in aid of charity: Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (in aid of Comic Relief and Lumos); and The Tales of Beedle the Bard (in aid of Lumos). In 2015 J.K. Rowling's 2008 Harvard commencement speech was published under the title 'Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination' (in aid of Lumos and university financial aid at Harvard). In 2012, J.K. Rowling's digital company Pottermore was launched, which became Wizarding World Digital in 2019. Pottermore Publishing continues to be the global digital publisher of Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World. J.K. Rowling has written a film script inspired by Fantastic Beasts and Where to find Them, with the film due for release in Autumn 2016. In addition to J.K Rowling's collaboration on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II, an original new story by J.K.Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, she is also making her screenwriting debut with the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a further extension of the wizarding world, due for release in November 2016. Okay, so we're cheating a bit and this one's actually a screenplay. If you haven't read the first seven Harry Potter books, what are you doing with your life?!? (Just kidding, we don't judge. We do however discuss spoilers from the main series, so be warned.) Also on the table: Albus is Really Bad at making plans, Cedric is a balloon that just wants to fly, and all your favorite characters are one straw away from becoming a Death Eater. Were you wondering about the Trolley Witch? What about Voldemort's dick? Neither were we, listeners. Neither were we. TW: Death, mild violence. In Episode 22, I sit down with MGySgt John Tiffany to dive into the wave tops of his 26 year career. We met in passing at Ft. Meade back in 2015, regrettably never having the opportunity to be stationed together. It could have been his wild eyed intensity or our shared love of science fiction but an immediate bond was established. Indicative of the intimacy of our OCCFLD, we're never really more than one degree of separation from one another past a certain level. As we recount some of the characters we've had the mutual pleasure to serve with, the conversation never strays far from the character and calibre of the Marines who comprise the Force. A key undertone consistent throughout our conversation is the critical requirement for vigilance against the self induced pressure to take sacrifice to the extreme as well as identifying productive countermeasures against that drift.

After a huge finale, fans thought J.K. Rowling was through with the wizarding world. However, she’s teamed up with John Tiffany and playwright Jack Thorne for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” set nineteen years in the future of the Harry Potter universe. The book follows the title character and his son, Albus Severus Potter. Despite projections for the book to be the best-selling of 2016, the story’s stage play format and co-authorship has some die-hard Potterheads upset and underwhelmed by the highly-anticipated release. We’ll discuss the new work's reception and get your reactions on the latest addition to the beloved franchise.

"Boy meets girl” is a fine start for so many stories, including Let the Right One In, a play adapted by Jack Thorne and based on the Swedish novel and film of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist. But when the boy is an adolescent misfit and the girl is a vampire, the consequences of their encounter are likely to be farther-reaching than those in a human-to-human hookup. No less than three other Broadway musicals have been vampire-based, although all three of them proved to be somewhat less than immortal. This one is directed by John Tiffany, known for the musical Once. How does this "boy meets girl" relationship begin, how does this vampire make her way in the world of mortals? And — more important for us theatergoers — is this vampire tale going to leave us bewitched or simply benumbed? New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood clues us in. The National Theatre of Scotland production of Let the Right One In runs through Feb. 15 at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn.

British director John Tiffany, who had a huge success with the play Black Watch, is now working on a Broadway musical version of the romantic film Once. The film, set in Dublin, won an Oscar in 2007 for best original song - but wasn't a musical. John Tiffany discusses how he's brought an Irish bar to the New York stage. Writer Lyndsay Faye's new crime thriller, Gods Of Gotham, is set in 1840s New York, when the city's police force was founded. Much of the novel is written in Flash, the criminal slang of the day, which was documented by the city's first police chief. Lyndsay Faye reflects on how she researched the era. Kirsty visits Lincoln Hospital, in the South Bronx, where they've introduced a scheme to allow artists and performers without health insurance to trade their creative talents for treatment. Writer and performer Mike Daisey is a self-confessed geek, whose latest show, The Agony And Ecstasy Of Steve Jobs, describes his love affair with technology. He describes how this led him to China, to seek out the workers who labour in the factories assembling Apple's computers - and he reveals what he found.
