Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Anne Hillerman Anne Hillerman discusses her latest novel, “Lost Birds,” and her career as a writer with host Richard Wolinsky. Anne Hillerman has written nine books in a series of mysteries featuring the native detectives Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, created by her father, the legendary novelist, the late Tony Hillerman (1925-2008). Previously a writer of travel books focusing on Santa Fe and environs, she began working on these novels following the death of her father and chose to increase the role of a minor character, Bernadette Manuelito, from Tony Hillerman's books to one of primary protagonist. That change was later emulated in the “Dark Winds” television series. Complete Interview   Caleb Carr (1955-2024) Caleb Carr in 2002. Caleb Carr (1955-2024), author of The Alienist and other works, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in the KPFA studios October 15, 1997. Caleb Carr, who died on May 23, 2024 at the age of 68, was a military historian, a novelist, and a writer who examined the nature of violence in his fiction and non-fiction. He was perhaps best known for his best-selling novel The Alienist, which recently became a two-season streaming series. This interview was recorded in the KPFA studios on October 15, 1997 while Caleb Carr was on tour for The Angel of Darkness, the sequel to The Alienist. While he never came back directly to the character of Lasso Kreisler, the protagonist of The Alienist, Caleb Carr's final novel, a contemporary mystery, Surrender, New York, featured as its protagonist an expert on the life and work of Kreisler. He was raised speaking the French-Canadian working class dialect Joual until he learned English at age five. Kerouac studied at local Catholic public schools and the Horace Mann School in New York City, as well as Columbia University and The New School. In 1942, Kerouac joined the United States Merchant Marine, and a year later joined the United States Navy—he served only eight days of active duty before being honorably discharged on psychiatric grounds. Soon after, Kerouac was involved in the murder of David Kammerer, having helped his friend Lucien Carr dispose of evidence, and was arrested as a material witness. Unable to convince his father to pay for bail, Kerouac agreed to marry fellow writer Edie Parker in exchange for her financial support and moved to Detroit, Michigan. Their marriage was quickly annulled due to infidelity, and Kerouac returned to New York City in 1944.Upon Kerouac's return to New York, he lived with his parents in Queens, where he wrote his first novel, The Town and the City (Harcourt Brace, 1950). Through Lucien Carr, Kerouac had met many of the literary figures now associated with the Beat Generation, including Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, and in 1949 he began his most famous literary work, On the Road (Viking Press, 1957), which was tentatively titled "The Beat Generation" and "Gone on the Road." Kerouac finished the largely autobiographical novel in April 1951, though it remained unpublished until 1957. During that time, Kerouac completed ten other autobiographical novels, including The Subterraneans (Grove Press, 1958), Doctor Sax (Grove Press, 1959), Tristessa (Avon, 1960), and Desolation Angels (Coward McCann, 1965).In July of 1957, Kerouac moved to Orlando, Florida, while awaiting the release of On the Road later that year. Soon after, the New York Times ran a review lauding Kerouac as the voice of a new generation. The success of the novel garnered Kerouac celebrity status as a major American author, and his friendship with Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Gregory Corso cemented the influence of what became known as the Beat Generation. Other poet friends of Kerouac include Philip Lamantia, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Bob Kaufman, Diane di Prima, Lew Welch, and Amiri Baraka.Though best known for his novels, Kerouac is also associated with poetry of the Beat movement, including spoken word. Kerouac wrote that he wanted "to be considered as a jazz poet blowing a long blues in an afternoon jazz session on Sunday." Other books published later in Kerouac's career include The Dharma Bums and Big Sur. Jack Kerouac died from a chronic liver disease on October 21, 1969, at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, the result of a lifetime of heavy drinking. From https://poets.org/poet/jack-kerouac. For more information about Jack Kerouac:Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:Harryette Mullen about Kerouac, at 16:20: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-142-harryette-mullen“Jack Kerouac”: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/jack-kerouac“Jack Kerouac, The Art of Fiction No. 41”: https://www.theparisreview.org/interviews/4260/the-art-of-fiction-no-41-jack-kerouac“The Lonesome Traveler: Kerouac's Tour of the Unseen New York”: https://www.themarginalian.org/2013/06/13/jack-kerouac-lonesome-traveler-new-york/

Listen out for Innes’s misunderstanding of names and discussions about David Cameron and Jack Anorak. Change has arrived and it's time that the art world increases its influence, inspiration, and power. We’re entering a very interesting time in the arts, when increasing numbers of artists will use their talents to push back against a growing climate of racism, inequality, and social conservatism. As Ted Wells says: "Jump off the BLANDwagon."  Dark times can make life beautiful. With the arts, our lives can be transitional during a time full of powerful artistic commentary and vivid artistic and social expression.  Some artists protest the present while shaping and reinventing the future; others artists help us escape our current reality or remind us that beauty and novelty still exist in the world, regardless of how bad we’re currently feeling about it. During the 1960s, artists created work that protested injustice and inspired the counterculture to battle the conservative backlash. And others made art that was so beautiful that it soothed shattered nerves and lifted average people out of the shadows. That was what the world needed then, and it’s what the world needs now. And I feel that’s exactly what is coming in the next few years. The creation of art, by any of us, can be a way of expressing our feelings within a realm of freedom that we might not be experiencing in our job, or among our community, or within our family. In some ways, it can a be way of emerging some part of our soul that would otherwise be trapped because of the way artistic expression can be squelched by society. Be raw, rougher … more honest and expressive … and way more real. By the time you finish reading this, everything I'm about to tell you will already be over. What you choose to do with it is up to you. Caleb Carr was beaten as a child. His father, Lucien Carr, was an Ivy League boy, friends with Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. They were the rebels of society. Known as The Beat Generation. But Caleb reminded me of their other legacy... "My father gets arrested for murder. Jack gets arrested for accessory because he helped hide the weapon..." "And then Burroughs, of course, shoots his wife down in Mexico." "My father's murder case gave their movement a type of darkness and gravitas it wouldn't have otherwise had." --- "All of these cycles, all of these abusive things are cyclical," Caleb said. His father didn't get the help he needed. He didn't get the help he needed. "It's one of the reasons I never had children myself." I didn't understand at first. Caleb has the awareness. He understands the cycle. So I asked, "Don't you think if you had children, you would have been able to hold yourself back?" "I simply could not trust that," he said. --- As adults, we look at our lives and question what happened and why? We pick at our scabs and then wonder why we're bleeding. What's done is done. And how you choose to live with it is your legacy. So Caleb writes. And between the intersection of abuse and history, he found relief. Caleb's latest book, "Survivor, New York" begins with "The Curse of Knowledge," It's the idea that once you know something you can't unknow it... pain, loss, grief. No pain heals without air. Eventually, the bandaid gets soggy. And the cut below turns green. That's when I start reading. Caleb's books are the air. Keep reading to learn three lessons from the brilliant, historical novelist, Caleb Carr. Two will give you relief. One will not... 1. History can save you. A lot of people write thrillers. But Caleb wasn't sure how he'd set himself apart. But he found a simple solution. Training + Interest = Success Caleb is a trained historian. He has an interest in serial killer novels. And now he's a bestselling author. He writes historical thrillers where characters like Theodore Roosevelt and Alexander Hamilton rescue neglected children from serial killers. 2. Pain reinvented is freedom. Caleb needed to write... (as all writers do). But he didn't want to write a memoir like his father's pack. He tried it once. "I found the experience incredibly creepy." So he found fiction. Caleb said he's not depressed but feels "intense melancholia."  "It's a dark, dark place you go." "Are you able to function with it?" I asked. "Oh yeah," he said, "that's when I work." 3. Always end on a cliffhanger Every unresolved problem in my life is a cliffhanger.Cliffhangers keep the story going. They create chaos. So I just stay curious. Caleb told me the warning signs of a serial killer: childhood violence, torture against animals, fires. "I loved starting fires," he said. "I set my house on fire when I was four years old. It was the only time my father didn't hit me." I later asked if he has sociopathic tendencies... "functional sociopathic tendencies." "Ummmm..." He was thinking about it.   ------------What do YOU think of the show? Daniel Radcliffe was once the bespectacled boy wizard of Harry Potter. With a bit of a scruff and near 25 it doesn't seem odd that he prefers Dan. Speaking to him since he's 10, you happily adopt the name as he's permanently left the Hogwarts building. In Kill Your Darlings he may still be wearing Potter-shaped glasses but the comparisons firmly end there. Dan joins host Robin Milling to discuss taking on the role of Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. He tells Robin he modestly dabbled in sonnets when he was 17, but now he's working towards writing screenplays he can direct. To get into the mindset of unrequited heartache for Lucien Carr (played by Dane DeHaan), director John Krokidas, who also joins Robin, suggested he borrow Renee Zelwegger's method of listening to music before the scene. Dan chose jazz singer Jo Stafford while Krokidas turned to bands such as The Libertines with similar torture in their relationship. John, who is well versed in the Beat Generation keyed into Ginsberg for being openly gay in the 40s and taking his freedom of expression all the way to the Supreme Court. He tells Robin he aspires to be that brave and hopes the film will do the same for audiences. 'Maybe,' he says, 'you will take pen to paper and create something revolutionary.'
