As a conservative artist who's been working in the mainstream since 2007, Nate has an artistic opinion that's going to get conservative folks angry: Capitalism doesn't produce great art. Lest you join this commenter who said "this take is so dumb it got me to engage, brilliant", if you care about this topic, you need to listen to the whole episode. Nate's argument is that the incentives of capitalism reward the MOST entertainment, for the MOST people, for the MOST money. But actual greatness of art? That's not a problem that capitalism is solving for. Capitalism is a Delta stewardess serving cheese cubes to the Delta Sky Club Diamond members. It'll get you the most cheese cubes at the lowest price, but it's not not gonna get a steak. Instead, Nate argues for a return of patronage. Cathedrals, requiems, masses, paintings, statuary -- it's all been the result of patronage. Brian objects. Nate qualifies. The truth is that when streaming is king, an uncompromising demand for excellence and improvement only eats into your profit, because a creator's profit is capped by the streaming service. How do you resist the allure of cold hard cash if you're a creator? Better make sure you have principles you can hold on to beyond the desire for money.

If you've been keeping an eye on the art market, you know that the industry has been going through some turbulent times... there's really no other way to say it: It's been a tough year, as the frothy post-pandemic surge in the art business has fully retreated. Amid this market slowdown comes our latest data-packed and information-rich issue of the Mid-Year Intelligence Report, which is appropriately titled The Art Market Reset: Riding the Waves of Change. This Fall issue looks at the numbers behind the mood, and it is packed with relevant insights that will help buyers, sellers, and spectators make informed decisions in the months ahead. Katya Kazakina, Artnet's award-winning columnist who pens a weekly art market column called The Art Detective is joining Art Angle co-host Kate Brown on the podcast this week to discuss her must read cover story for the new Intelligence Report. In it, she investigates what led to the sharp drop in the demand for art, as well as resale values for once coveted pieces. They discuss how the data reveals a market in free fall, where galleries have been faced with cost-cutting measures, or are shuttering altogether. There are some silver linings in her story, as Katya examines the smart responses that are being made across the industry, revealing how sales tactics are evolving and why some people actually believe that a slowdown in art production is not a bad thing altogether. Before we get to that, a few more words about the rest of the report. Our illuminating By the Numbers section details how, as compared with last year, there has been a substantial drop in money being spent on Ultra Contemporary art, a downturn in the sales generated by the big three auction houses (Sotheby's, Christie's, and Phillips), fewer artworks selling publicly for over $10 million, and the average price of art at auction is also going down. You can find specific breakdowns in the actual report. What does it all mean though? News editor Margaret Carrigan, gives a spin-free analysis of the auction stats. Also in this issue, our Editor in Chief Naomi Rea, spoke with Art Basel Paris Fair Director Clément Delépine about what to expect at the revamped art fair, which is moving back into the Grand Palais next month. Our market reporter, Eileen Kinsella, spoke to Sotheby's Phyllis Kao about how the secondary market is adjusting its working processes amid the flux, and our marketplace section brings you the stories behind the top selling works, and the scoop on artists whose markets are on the rise. Even amid this slump, Artnet's esteemed reporters and editors have worked hard and put together an excellent issue that will help you navigate the current art market season, where the road ahead feels anything but clear.

OPEN MIKE w/Michael Thiessen ~ August 03, 2024On this episode of Open Mike, Dr. Thiessen is joined by Ryan Lauterio, founder of the Maker Institute, who discusses the importance of art in the Christian faith and the need for Christians to engage in the arts. He emphasizes that art is not neutral and can it be. It's either humanizing or dehumanizing in accord with the Word of God. Lauterio encourages Christians to be grateful for the arts and to push for excellence in their creative endeavors. He also addresses the false dilemma of quality versus budget, stating that Christians can make good art without needing a large budget. Lauterio calls for the church to take a vested interest in supporting and promoting Christian art. How do people like Stephen Sondheim, Sofia Coppola or David Simon create something from nothing? And what are the threads that tie their work together with making a cookbook or a cartoon? Former New York Magazine and New York Times Magazine editor Adam Moss talked to dozens of creative people to find out how they do it. In his new book, The Work of Art, artists from a wide range of mediums break down the process behind a single piece, sharing sketches, outlines and rejected attempts they worked through along the way. After a long interlude, Escape From Plan A is back in production! Teen and Shan recount their first trip abroad (to Spain) in almost 4 years -- since right before COVID was discovered -- and the return of novelty to foreign travel. They talk at length about the Prado and the revelatory experience they had without the pressure of worshiping European art and being able to take it in as it as was intended: pure schlock entertainment, no different than Hollywood. [video available on spotify] we're all constantly waiting on our favorite creatives to put out their next project. and the reason for that is because art takes a long time to create. i think a lot of us know this, but we forget this. i see a lot of fans online saying things to their favorite creatives like, hello, where's the next project? did you forget about us? are you being fucking lazy? it's very easy to believe that for artists, being creative is just automatic. and if they're not coming out with stuff left and right, it's because they don't want to. but that's very far from the truth. so today i want to talk about why good art takes time. Running a fever is a sign that we are fighting an infection. Your temperature rises; you are very hot. Your sweat glands activate and you cool down. Your fever has broken and you are in the process of recovering and getting well. You are moving toward healing. The lust for money and power in the high level narcissist is a fever, a sickness, a perverse pursuit, uncontained. Monetary acquisition captivates the high level narcissist. High levels are always thinking about how much money they have, how to get more, how to keep it from others. For the high level there is never enough money, investments, properties, financial holdings. Lusting after money is the singular preoccupation for many high level narcissists. Having lots of money makes them feel more entitled, superior to others, a consummate winner. In this obsessive pursuit the high level narcissist doesn't stop victimizing others, disrupting their lives, leaving them without monetary means, causing extreme duress, anxiety and worry. Pay attention to your intuition about the high level narcissist. You sense their vileness, like a noxious odor in the air. Dis-entangle yourself from the lust fevered high level narcissist. Develop habits of self care: rest, sleep, nourishing food, good hydration, movement and exercise that works for you, spend time with Nature, bring Great Art into your days. Exercise your intuitive gifts. Honor your wisdom and fine character. Develop a spiritual practice specifically designed for you as an individual. When great artists do very bad things, do we discard their work wholesale? Claire Dederer joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the lens #metoo has put on work created by flawed men, and how we balance our sense of morality and ethics with a love of what are widely considered masterpieces. Her book is “Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma.”
A deluge of money is streaming into the southwest to incentivize people to save the Colorado River. The long-awaited video game “Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” has gamers talking about their carbon footprint. Then, what are we to do with art we love made by people we don't? V chats with author and critic Claire Dederer, whose latest book, Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma, explores our relationship with music, films, and other art in the wake of #MeToo. Can we, and should we, separate the art from the artist? Note: This conversation contains mention of abuse. If you think this will be hard or harmful to listen to, you can turn off the episode after the first commercial break. Follow Claire at @clairedederer on Instagram and Twitter. Everything Everywhere All at Once won Best Picture in part because it was a rebuke of Oscar-bait pretension with its non-western story, diverse cast, and fun unpretentious style - whereas in the leadup to the awards, many avoided the frontrunner, Todd Fields' Tar, because it appeared to be old-school Oscar: a ponderous, self-serious reinforcement of the Great Art. But tonight, along with the gentle indie Thirty-Two Short Films about Glenn Gould, MG argues that classical doesn't necessarily mean pretentious.
Is it okay to consume — even to love — the art created by people who've done terrible things? What are the ethics of making a choice like that?
Margo is joined by art advisor, curator, and gallery owner Liz Lidgett. Liz's passion for art allowed her to see that competent art consulting for private companies and corporations was a need that wasn't being filled. With that in mind, she began her art consultation business, Adore Your Walls, in 2013. Since then, her business has grown and she recognized once again that online and national consulting – the type that exists for furniture and interior design – was completely absent for the world of art and has expanded her services, including a gallery space. With her developed expertise, Adore Your Walls has evolved into her new brand: Liz Lidgett Gallery + Design. Within the rebrand, Liz continues to consult, partner with artists and regularly contribute to design publications across the country. She represents 50 unique artists from around the world—with a commitment to always represent at least 50% women and/or BIPOC artists. Although her gallery is located in Des Moines, Iowa, they have an international reach, shipping 80% of the work they sell, and have sold to clients in 45 states and 7 countries. It was important for Liz to create a gallery that operated in a way she felt galleries should operate, where artists were paid fairly and quickly, and where an approachable, non-pretentious experience is created for clients. Her mission is “Art For Everyone.” Although they represent some very well-known artists like Hunt Slonem, Liz wants people to know that you don't have to be a millionaire to be an art collector. Liz has gained a huge following on social media by showcasing the art in her gallery, the artists, and fun facts about art. Margo and Liz discuss: What led Liz to start her own gallery The important of creativity and adorning your walls with art How she has changed the landscape of Des Moines and surrounding cities with murals Why art collecting can be accessible for anyone, not just millionaires How to find your personal style in art and how to find art that fits with the design of your space (size, color palette, spacing with furniture, etc.) How she helps clients in being socially conscious with the art pieces — who the artist is, how they create, the reasoning behind a piece of art, etc. Her approach to buying and selling art Connect with Liz: https://www.lizlidgett.com/ https://www.instagram.com/lizlidgettgallery/ https://www.instagram.com/lizlidgett/ Ten Minute Masterpieces with Liz Lidgett Connect with Margo: www.windowsillchats.com www.instagram.com/windowsillchats https://www.patreon.com/inthewindowsill
