This week's special guest speaker, Stuart Davis, takes a look at the familial image of 1 John 2: 3-11. What does it mean to be a part of God's family? In this episode of Guerrilla History, we bring back two outstanding guests, Stuart Davis (whom you will remember from our episode Sanctions As War (alongside Manny Ness)), and Greg Shupak (whom you will remember from our episode The History and Impact of Sanctions on Syria).  Here, we discuss a topic that each of them has done a lot of work on - media narratives and hegemonic discourses.  This is an incredibly important conversation, and a very interesting discussion as well.  As we say in the episode, this is one that is perfect for sharing with friends and family members who may not already be highly tuned in to political affairs, but who understand that the media may be manipulating them! Stuart Davis is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Baruch College, the City University of New York he focuses on digital media advocacy, protest politics, and digital media and public health, particularly in the Latin American context. William Hope Hodgson's The Night Land is without a doubt one of the weirdest entries in the annals of weird fiction. Set in the earth's distant future, after the sun has gone out and the planet has been cleaved in two by an unspecified disaster, a telepathic scientist dons his armour and weapons to brave the monster-haunted yet strangely monotonous wastes that engirdle the massive pyramid in which the last humans took refuge, hundreds of thousands of years earlier. If Samuel Beckett tripped hard on ayahuasca, he might have come up with something like Hodgson's genre-defying novel, which reads more like a report to committee of 17th-century heretics than a piece of speculative fiction from the early twentieth century. MIT Press recently released a (blessedly) abridged edition of The Night Land as part of their Radium Series. STUART DAVIS is a contemporary musician, songwriter, filmmaker, and podcaster. He has been performing throughout the United States and Europe since 1993. Davis regularly works with music producer Alex Gibson, who produced his last five studio albums. In 2009, TV channel HDNet broadcast the first six-episode season of "Sex, God, Rock 'n Roll," a comedy sketch show written, directed, and hosted by Davis; a second season with Davis and co-host Kandyse McClure began airing in 2012. Davis is a contributing member of philosopher Ken Wilber's Integral Institute, and appears as a fictionalized character in Wilber's novel Boomeritis. His single Already Free (2008) was featured as the end theme of the Showtime series I Can't Believe I'm Still Single, and was also used in the feature film Drillbit Taylor. Chris closes off the podcast for 2021 with a bang, as he welcomes by far his biggest guest to date! Stuart Davis is one of the most unique and inspirational songwriters in the world, and has drawn praise and critical acclaim from influential figures worldwide. Amongst them, Chris' own musical idol Ed Kowalczyk (from the band +LIVE+) once described Stuart as 'the greatest lyricist I've ever heard', and philosopher Ken Wilber calls him 'a rare genius'. On top of this, Stuart is a successful writer, artist, director, actor, spiritual practitioner and has even constructed his own language! It was little surprise that Stuart was one of the artists who played a crucial part at the beginning of Chris' own creative journey, making this interview all the more poignant. April 12, 1981. Keddie, California. 36-year old Sue Sharp, her 15-year old son John Sharp, and John's 17-year old friend, Dana Wingate, are found brutally murdered inside Cabin 28 at the Keddie Resort. Sue's 12-year old daughter, Tina Sharp, is missing and her skeletal remains would be discovered in a remote area three years later. Sue's two youngest sons, along with a 12-year old family friend named Justin Smartt spent the night in a separate bedroom and were left unharmed. Over the years, the investigation would uncover two promising suspects who happened to live in another cabin at the resort. Were these two men responsible for the Keddie Cabin murders? Was there was a cover-up by law enforcement which allowed them to escape justice? Did Justin Smartt witness the murders and block the event from his memory? Were other suspects involved in the crime?
