Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Anne Hillerman Anne Hillerman discusses her latest novel, “Lost Birds,” and her career as a writer with host Richard Wolinsky. Anne Hillerman has written nine books in a series of mysteries featuring the native detectives Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, created by her father, the legendary novelist, the late Tony Hillerman (1925-2008). Previously a writer of travel books focusing on Santa Fe and environs, she began working on these novels following the death of her father and chose to increase the role of a minor character, Bernadette Manuelito, from Tony Hillerman's books to one of primary protagonist. That change was later emulated in the “Dark Winds” television series. Complete Interview   Caleb Carr (1955-2024) Caleb Carr in 2002. Caleb Carr (1955-2024), author of The Alienist and other works, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in the KPFA studios October 15, 1997. Digitized, remastered and edited in September 2024, this interview has not been heard in over a quarter century. Caleb Carr, who died on May 23, 2024 at the age of 68, was a military historian, a novelist, and a writer who examined the nature of violence in his fiction and non-fiction. He was perhaps best known for his best-selling novel The Alienist, which recently became a two-season streaming series. Over all, he wrote 11 books, several articles and reviews, worked on both seasons of the television series and two exorcist films. He was the son of Lucien Carr, a key member of the group that included Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Lucien Carr went to prison for manslaughter for killing the sexual predator who had abused him as a youth. Kerouac helped him dispose of the knife. This interview was recorded in the KPFA studios on October 15, 1997 while Caleb Carr was on tour for The Angel of Darkness, the sequel to The Alienist. While he never came back directly to the character of Lasso Kreisler, the protagonist of The Alienist, Caleb Carr's final novel, a contemporary mystery, Surrender, New York, featured as its protagonist an expert on the life and work of Kreisler. His next book following The Angel of Darkness was Killing Time, a dystopian science fiction novel.

We goofed! We were notified late in the day on Saturday that only part of our new episode featuring Erik Larson was published Saturday morning. Although we updated the episode's audio file Saturday night to resolve the issue, we understand that many listeners may have missed the update. We are republishing the episode now, in its entirety, so that everyone (including our subscribers who have downloads turned on) can enjoy our fantastic conversation with the incomparable Erik Larson. Thanks for bearing with us! “Believe me, there probably was not a day that went by where I didn't say to myself, What on earth am I doing? Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe review Steve Yeun (The Walking Dead) new film, MAYHEM, streaming exclusively on Shudder as well as SMALL TOWN CRIME, SUBURBICON and TNT's THE ALIENIST in Episode 319: Mayhem of The Harold & Maudecast. Fans who are still crying over the disturbing demise of Glenn at the hands of Negan (and Lucille) on The Walking Dead, may decide AMC did Steve Yeun a favor by axing his character. In his new horror film, MAYHEM, written by Matias Caruso, directed by Joe Lynch, Yeun proves himself worthy of a whole lot more than zombie guts. After an unsuccessful attempt to plea for his job that he was unjustly fired from, lawyer Derek Cho (Steve Yeun)is escorted out of his firm. He doesn't get far as the building has been quarantined due to a strange virus. Chaos breaks out throughout the building as victims of the illness lose self-control acting out their wildest, deadliest impulses. Also infected, Derek joins forces with a former client who has a grudge of her own. The duo savagely fight their way to the top floor where the corrupt executives await their wrath. MAYHEM is fantastic! Thanks to a fun, smart, tight, script and killer performance by Steve Yeun who affirms his leading man potential. Samara Weaving (THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI) lends the perfect dark comic support as Melanie, Derek's partner in revenge. Casting Dallas Roberts as Lester "The Reaper", the Human Resources Director, is a fun TWD reunion--remember Milton, Woodbury's resident doctor? There's tons of gore and action for hardcore horror fans but the breakout stars of this film are Yeun and screenwriter Matias Caruso. We can't wait to see what they [both] do next. Big Justice. We give it a 9/10. Also in this episode we review SMALL TOWN CRIME starring indie king, John Hawkes. The film co-stars Anthony Anderson and Octavio Spencer who also executive produces the film and is directed by The Nelms Brothers (WAFFLE STREET). Listen to the podcast for plot recap and our review. Additionally we review TNT's The Alienist, based on Caleb Carr's book starring Daniel Brühl (INGLORIOUS BASTERDS), Dakota Fanning (TWILIGHT series) and Luke Evans (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST). Continuing our series 'Rotten Tomatoes F*cked Me Wrong', we take a look at SUBURBICON, written by The Coen Brothers and Directed by George Clooney, starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac. If you're a fan of the Coens, you're gonna wanna listen to our review, and see the film! For more podcasts, reviews and more visit www.thehmcnetwork.com

You get a STAR TREK knockoff called THE OSIRIS CHRONICLES, about a band of rebels trying to fight off an invading army of enlightened philosophers who just want everyone to be nice to each other. By the time you finish reading this, everything I'm about to tell you will already be over. What you choose to do with it is up to you. Caleb Carr was beaten as a child. His father, Lucien Carr, was an Ivy League boy, friends with Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. They were the rebels of society. Known as The Beat Generation. But Caleb reminded me of their other legacy... "My father gets arrested for murder. Jack gets arrested for accessory because he helped hide the weapon..." "And then Burroughs, of course, shoots his wife down in Mexico." "My father's murder case gave their movement a type of darkness and gravitas it wouldn't have otherwise had." --- "All of these cycles, all of these abusive things are cyclical," Caleb said. His father didn't get the help he needed. He didn't get the help he needed. "It's one of the reasons I never had children myself." I didn't understand at first. Caleb has the awareness. He understands the cycle. So I asked, "Don't you think if you had children, you would have been able to hold yourself back?" "I simply could not trust that," he said. --- As adults, we look at our lives and question what happened and why? We pick at our scabs and then wonder why we're bleeding. What's done is done. And how you choose to live with it is your legacy. So Caleb writes. And between the intersection of abuse and history, he found relief. Caleb's latest book, "Survivor, New York" begins with "The Curse of Knowledge," It's the idea that once you know something you can't unknow it... pain, loss, grief. No pain heals without air. Eventually, the bandaid gets soggy. And the cut below turns green. That's when I start reading. Caleb's books are the air. Keep reading to learn three lessons from the brilliant, historical novelist, Caleb Carr. Two will give you relief. One will not... 1. History can save you. A lot of people write thrillers. But Caleb wasn't sure how he'd set himself apart. But he found a simple solution. Training + Interest = Success Caleb is a trained historian. He has an interest in serial killer novels. And now he's a bestselling author. He writes historical thrillers where characters like Theodore Roosevelt and Alexander Hamilton rescue neglected children from serial killers. 2. Pain reinvented is freedom. Caleb needed to write... (as all writers do). But he didn't want to write a memoir like his father's pack. He tried it once. "I found the experience incredibly creepy." So he found fiction. Caleb said he's not depressed but feels "intense melancholia."  "It's a dark, dark place you go." "Are you able to function with it?" I asked. "Oh yeah," he said, "that's when I work." 3. Always end on a cliffhanger Every unresolved problem in my life is a cliffhanger.Cliffhangers keep the story going. They create chaos. So I just stay curious. Caleb told me the warning signs of a serial killer: childhood violence, torture against animals, fires. "I loved starting fires," he said. "I set my house on fire when I was four years old. It was the only time my father didn't hit me." I later asked if he has sociopathic tendencies... "functional sociopathic tendencies." "Ummmm..."
