From Drew Estate about the collaboration: Dietrich and Drew Estate President Jonathan Drew have been friends for many years. It was Dietrich who introduced Metallica lead singer James Hetfield to Drew.  The idea was floated about creating a cigar brand. From there, the wheels were put in motion to create a cigar that shared the vision of the Blackened Brand. Drew provided cigars from the Drew Estate portfolio to sample and Hetfield and Dietrich kept cigar journals to critique the cigars and identify what they liked and disliked about each one.  Eventually they were able to settle on the flavor profile which was the Blackened M81. Rob Dietrich also blended the companion whiskey also called Blackened.  Will Cooper also reviewed this cigar in the toro size earlier year and it made #21 on Coop's Cigar of the Year list for 2023. L'étude est publiée dans Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letters.

Prospects for Detecting Fast Radio Bursts in Globular Clusters of Nearby Galaxies

Prospects for Detecting Fast Radio Bursts in Globular Clusters of Nearby Galaxies by Kyle Kremer et al. on Tuesday 11 October The recent detection of a repeating fast radio burst (FRB) in an old globular cluster in M81 challenges traditional FRB formation mechanisms based on magnetic activity in young neutron stars formed recently in core-collapse supernovae. Furthermore, the detection of this repeater in such a nearby galaxy implies a high local universe rate of similar events in globular clusters. Building off the properties inferred from the M81 FRB, we predict the number of FRB sources in nearby ($d lesssim 20,$Mpc) galaxies with large globular cluster systems known. Incorporating the uncertain burst energy distribution, we estimate the rate of bursts detectable in these galaxies by radio instruments such as FAST and MeerKat. Of all local galaxies, we find M87 is the best candidate for FRB detections. We predict M87's globular cluster system contains $mathcal{O}(10)$ FRB sources at present and that a dedicated radio survey (by FAST) of $mathcal{O}(10),$hr has a $90%$ probability of detecting a globular cluster FRB in M87. The detection of even a handful of additional globular cluster FRBs would provide invaluable constraints on FRB mechanisms and population properties. Previous studies have demonstrated young neutron stars formed following collapse of dynamically-formed massive white dwarf binary mergers may provide the most natural mechanism for these bursts. We explore the white dwarf merger scenario using a suite of $N$-body cluster models, focusing in particular on such mergers in M87 clusters. We describe a number of outstanding features of this scenario that in principle may be testable with an ensemble of observed FRBs in nearby globular clusters. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.04907v1

A Tale of a Tail: A Tidally-Disrupting Ultra-Diffuse Galaxy in the M81 Group by Rokas Žemaitis et al. on Thursday 22 September We present the discovery of a giant tidal tail of stars associated with F8D1, the closest known example of an ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG). F8D1 sits in a region of sky that is dominated by complex and bright Galactic cirrus and it has been poorly-studied since its discovery more than 20 years ago. The tidal feature was revealed in a deep map of resolved red giant branch stars that we constructed using data from our Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey of the M81 Group. It has an average surface brightness of $mu_g sim 32$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and with our current imagery can be traced for over a degree ($gtrsim$ 60 kpc at the distance of F8D1) to the North-East of the galaxy, pointing in the direction of the dwarf spiral NGC 2976, as well as M81. We revisit the main body properties of F8D1 using deep multiband imagery acquired with MegaCam on CFHT and measure effective radii of 1.7-1.9 kpc and central surface brightnesses of $mu_{0} sim 24.7-25.7$ mag. Assuming a symmetric feature on the other side of the galaxy, we calculate that $30-36$% of F8D1's present-day luminosity is contained in the stream. We argue that the most likely origin of F8D1's disruption is a recent close passage to M81, which would have stripped its gas and quenched its star formation. As the only UDG that is close enough to allow studies at extremely low surface brightness, and the first to be unambiguously linked to tidal stripping and heating, F8D1 is of particular importance. Many or most UDGs could be the result of similar processes, with the most obvious signatures of this lurking below current detection limits. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.09713v2
