En Abril de 2020 ocurrió algo excepcional. Se detectó el primer FRB dentro de nuestra galaxia, y no a cientos o miles de millones de años luz de distancia, como sucedía con todos los anteriores. Lo que permitió rastrearlo hasta un magnetar, un extraño tipo de cadáver estelar , llamado SGR 1935 + 2154 . El estallido, detectado por varios radiotelescopios de todo el mundo, fue tan poderoso que los instrumentos ni siquiera consiguieron medir su intensidad. La señal, según los investigadores, fue por lo menos un millón de veces más fuerte que el resto de los FRBs detectados hasta el momento, y la primera detectada dentro de la Vía Láctea. Tras largos meses de análisis, un nuevo estudio recién publicado en The Astrophysical Journal Letters confirma que el FRB procede, efectivamente, del magnetar SGR 1935 + 2154, un "cadáver estelar" que se encuentra a unos 30.000 años luz , dentro de nuestra propia galaxia. Lo cual llevó a pensar que también otros FRB podrían tener un origen similar.

I am really excited to be speaking again with Dr Laura Driessen, who is now recognised as one of Australia's Superstars of STEM! You first met Laura 5 years ago back in 2018 when she was doing her PhD at the University of Manchester and Jodrell Bank. Laura's back story is all there in Astrophiz Episode 54. You heard about her obsession with space starting at age 4 and her natural yet meandering academic Astro journey up to the point where she was using commensal searches on the MeerKAT array in South Africa for pinpointing and localization of FRBs, Fast Radio Bursts. Today we're taking up that story from where we left off, and we hear of her first post-doc with the CSIRO in Perth, her FRB and Radio Star research and her outreach work in the outback with indigenous school kids who live near the iconic Murchison Widefield Array and the ASKAP Array. Laura tells us about her current research and her work as the joint Science lead on the VAST project and you will love the clarity of her description of the power and nature of Commensal Searches, and how she uses archival data to verify that her radio data is actually coming from her targeted star and not from a radio galaxy hiding behind it. FRBs are sudden, bright flashes of radio light. Usually they only appear once and then are never seen again.   The mystery is that we don't know what is causing these bursts of light! All we know is it's something powerful, and probably something very far away. Marisa talks us through the mystery and reveals some enticing clues about what might be causing FRBs. Dustin Lang is a computational scientist at Perimeter Institute who develops techniques for finding needles in the cosmic haystack. He works on several large sky survey projects, tackling the statistical data analysis required to discern meaningful insights from huge datasets gathered by telescopes. In this conversation with Lauren and Colin, he shares his experiences mapping galaxies with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), and hunting for mysterious fast radio bursts (FRBs) with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME). He explains how he and his colleagues employ software solutions to expand capabilities of hardware telescopes, the challenges he has encountered in radio versus optical astronomy, and the important role of chicken wire at CHIME.
