Episode 170- We're thrilled to welcome Rob Dietrich — Master Distiller and Blender of Blackened American Whiskey — who joins us while on tour with Metallica as part of the explosive Metallica Takeover events. Before becoming the face behind Metallica's signature Blackened whiskey and cigar's, Rob lived a life few could imagine. From his early days serving in the U.S. Army to working as an event manager and roadie for some of the biggest names in music, Rob has truly seen it all — behind the scenes and behind the bar. In this episode, Rob opens up about his wild journey through the world of live music, his transition into the whiskey industry, and how he blended both passions into something legendary. He shares the science behind Blackened Whiskey's sonic-enhancement process, using Metallica's own music to shape the flavour of every barrel. He also shares his thoughts on the award winning Rye The Lightening From backstage chaos to barrels of perfectly tuned whiskey, Rob's story is one of grit, creativity, and rock ‘n' roll spirit. @robwhiskey @blackenedwhiskey https://blackenedwhiskey.com https://tellcraigyourstory.podbean.com https://www.linktr.ee/tellcraigyourstory @tellcraigyourstory #robdietrich #blackenedwhiskey #metallica #masterdistiller #drewestateblackenedcigars #denvercolorado #surfing #schoolbus #jameshetfield #larsulrich #kirkhammett #robtrujillo #davepickerall #usarmyservice #metallicatakeover #ryethelightening #metallicafamily #batch100 #batch106

We are back with more music and whiskey. Today we dive into 3 whiskies and see if celebrity whiskey can be good. badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3 https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== And today Whiskeydecisions.beehive.com Celebrity liquor brands are a real gray area when it comes to endorsements. As whiskey grows more popular, and more celebrities hop on the bandwagon, it can be hard to distinguish who's just taking a paycheck, and who cares about what you're drinking. But the good news is that increasingly, the big names attached to these bottles really care about the brand and the people who drink it. Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, who recently announced their new Dos Hombres mezcal, are just the latest in a series of famous people taking time out of their artistic careers to make artful beverages. What happens when a heavy metal band makes a whiskey? It's certainly not a quiet process. The Blackened American Whiskey is pummeled with low-hertz sound waves from a Metallica-curated playlist. It might sound like a marketing ploy, but distillers insist the sonic-enhancement process drives the whiskey deeper into the wood of the barrel where it picks up extra flavor. As for the tasting notes, expect honey, cinnamon, allspice, and some lingering apricot. New year, new you, right? Okay, by mid-January a bit of the luster has worn off those shiny new resolutions. In fact, National Today says that January 17 is actually the official Ditch New Year's Resolution Day. Still, even if all your grand plans to walk 5 miles a day, save half your paycheck, and subside off nothing but kale, quinoa, and spring water have come to naught, that doesn't mean you can't make some revised resolutions that will be both easier and more fun to follow. Like, how about you simply resolve to try a few new things? This is hardly likely to hurt, particularly if you choose things you already enjoy, such as sampling a few new bourbons. Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey Heaven's Door and retailers across the country selected barrels that vary in age, mashbill, and warehousing locations, in order to select their own Cask Strength Single Barrel Bourbon. This limited release will be hand numbered and adorned with our partners name, offering a distinctive experience. 750 ML, 49.5% ABV (99 PROOF) A blend of 4-5 yr. old straight rye and straight bourbon mashed, fermented, distilled and aged at the Cedar Ridge Distillery. Direct shipping is available in select markets. Unfortunately we do not ship to the states of AK, AL, HI, ID, MI, MS, OK, UT. Mashbill: 51% Corn, 35% Malted Rye, 14% Malted Barley “Think cinnamon, clove, butter and oak. As it hits the palate, it coats it with this goodness, buttery almost, dripping down the side of the cheeks and warms all throughout. There's a comfort here, cornbread-like, with notes of fried apple pie, apricot and macaroon. It finishes medium to long with a hint of bananas foster.” WAIT AND BLEED Ingredients: 2 oz No. 9 Reserve Whiskey 1 oz Sweet Vermouth 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters Equipment: Mixing glass Stirring spoon Strainer Chilled cocktail glass Instructions: Fill a mixing glass with ice cubes. Pour 2 ounces of No. 9 Reserve Whiskey into the mixing glass. Add 1 ounce of Sweet Vermouth to the glass. Add 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters to the mixture. Stir the ingredients gently but thoroughly using a stirring spoon for about 30 seconds to chill and combine them. Place a strainer over a chilled cocktail glass and strain the mixture into the glass. Optionally, garnish with a orange twist or cherry if desired. Sip and savor the bold and balanced flavors of Wait and Bleed. Enjoy responsibly!
Drew Estate introduced the Blackened M81 cigar line last year which is a collaboration with Rob Dietrich, master distiller and blender of Blackened American Whiskey, Jonathan Drew of Drew Estate, and lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Metallica, James Hetfield. The cigar gets it name from the first track off Metallica's ….And Justice for All album released in 1988 and M81 which M is for Metallica and their founding year of 1981. All three had a major hand in coming up with the blend of the Blackened cigar. From Drew Estate about the collaboration: Dietrich and Drew Estate President Jonathan Drew have been friends for many years. It was Dietrich who introduced Metallica lead singer James Hetfield to Drew. The idea was floated about creating a cigar brand. From there, the wheels were put in motion to create a cigar that shared the vision of the Blackened Brand. Drew provided cigars from the Drew Estate portfolio to sample and Hetfield and Dietrich kept cigar journals to critique the cigars and identify what they liked and disliked about each one. Eventually they were able to settle on the flavor profile which was the Blackened M81. Rob Dietrich also blended the companion whiskey also called Blackened. Will Cooper also reviewed this cigar in the toro size earlier year and it made #21 on Coop's Cigar of the Year list for 2023. In this episode, Melissa Esposito Zoomed in from New Jersey. Melissa is the Director of Operations for Blackened American Whiskey which was created by the late Dave Pickerill and heavy metal rock band Metallica. Melissa shares her journey in the industry as well as proprietary techniques used to create Blackened and what it's like working for one of the most popular bands in the world.
Rob Dietrich is the currently the Master Distiller of Metallica's Blackened American Whiskey, though he may have the most diverse resume in his field, reflecting a man that remains impossible to categorize (and hard to hold down for long). Rob is a combat veteran who joined the Army in his twenties and served three tours, one of them being the incident referred to as "Black Hawk Down". He's a lifelong die-hard music fan of every genre, who chooses to have a record player in his home instead of a television. Rob also has an impressive music career, formerly having worked for Bill Graham Presents for a decade (his first assignment for the world famous promoter was The Tibetan Freedom Concert in 1996, which made an indelible impression and impact on his life). This another episode that feels like "Jaymee's made a new best friend" (which seem to be happening more often these days). This episode was the brainchild of Jaymee's brother Benjamin Carpenter, who works for Rob and Metallica at Blackened. Also discussed: why vinyl records and coolections are important Big Black (and other groups you haven't heard of that we have) details you never hear about joining the army and being in combat how psychedelics & going off the grid reduced combat PTSD why fireworks are lame for veterans (and dogs) the importance of listening to your children trusting intuition How to keep your sanity in the hell of war the car ride w/ Beastie Boy Adam Yauch that changed his life what it's like to meet and work for your hero's Pioneering Black Noise Sonic Enhancement at Blackened FEATURED GUEST: Rob Dietrich (@whiskeyrob on IG) MORE ABOUT BLACKENED: www.blackenedwhiskey.com FEATURED MUSIC: "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica (performed by Phoebe Bridgers) + "Bodhisattva Vow" by Beastie Boys. Cheers,Scott, Jake, & MichaelBourbon Lens About Blackened Whiskey: BLACKENED was created in 2018 by Metallica and late Master Distiller Dave Pickerell. It features a blend of the finest North American bourbons and ryes that were hand-selected by Dave and finished in black brandy casks. During finishing, the whiskey undergoes the BLACK NOISE sonic-enhancement where the low frequencies of Metallica's music pummel the finishing barrel, visibly shaking it, causing greater interaction between the whiskey and the wood, thereby extracting more flavor and color. The playlist for the batches are traditionally selected by the members of Metallica and can be found on the website at https://blackenedwhiskey.com/batch-playlists/ The brand recently unveiled its new “Masters of Whiskey Series,” which partners Rob Dietrich with other renowned master distillers to reimagine craft whiskey. The series debuted with the BLACKENED x Willett Kentucky Straight Rye Finished in Madeira Casks created in collaboration with Drew Kulsveen and Willett Distillery. It's crafted from a base of low rye and high rye recipes hand-selected by Rob and Drew from the Willett Family Estate Reserve Selection. The whiskies are married in Madeira Casks where they undergo the BLACK NOISE sonic-enhancement process using a playlist selected by both Master Distillers. It's bottled at cask strength at 109.6 proof. Metallica is one of the most influential bands of all time, so it would have been easy to slap a label on some average whiskey and rake in the money. Instead they combined creative forces with the legendary Dave Pickerell to create Blackened Whiskey, a blend of many whiskeys from all over the country and finished in Black Brandy barrels. After Dave's passing, Master Distiller Rob Dietrich, most notable for his previous work at Stranahan's in Colorado, joined Sweet Amber Distilling to continue Dave's legacy culminating in Batch 100 limited edition boxed set where he was the one to pick the entire setlist of the Metallica songs blasted into the whiskey as it aged. We chat the history of Blackened with Lars Ulrich and Rob Dietrich on this rockin episode, with stories from back in the day to now, along with exactly how each batch is created. We also touch on Metallica's philanthropic foundation All Within My Hands. We also talk exactly what we think of the whiskey and take Lars and Rob's opinions as well. A veteran in the spirits and music industry, Rob's passion and experience make him the perfect person to oversee the sourcing, blending, and cask finishing of barrels for each batch of Blackened.Rob initially learned the art and science of distilling from expert distiller, Jess Graber. He earned his distilling stripes throughout more than 12 years in the industry and whiskey lovers took notice of his limited-release, cask finish expressions such as Snowflake, Sherry Cask, and more. In addition to an extensive distilling background, Rob spent a decade in the music business honing his passion with Bill Graham Presents, as a freelance agent for a variety of venues like Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre and The Fillmore in San Francisco, as well as managing tours and festivals. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division and served from 1992 to 1995. His two combat tours in Somalia and relief operations in Haiti helped shape his life-affirming philosophy.Rob will continue to build upon the foundation set forth by his predecessor Dave Pickerell, who we sadly lost last fall. Known as the world's preeminent distiller, Dave brought his vision and creativity to Blackened to offer a premier whiskey enhanced by our music. Rob will continue to honor his spirit while bringing his own talents and skills to the role, working closely with us to keep Dave's legacy alive.Dave will forever be a member of our family and we miss him tremendously. As we have gotten to know Rob more closely, his values, knowledge, and love for what he does are also apparent, and he shares great respect for craftsmanship that we have for Blackened and our music. We're thrilled that he's joined the party!https://www.metallica.com/news/2019-06-04-meet-our-new-master-distiller-rob-dietrich.html--From Blackened's Website: blackenedwhiskey.comA COLLABORATION OF BOURBONS, RYES & WHISKEYSBLACKENED is a marriage of the finest bourbons, ryes & whiskeys, hand selected by Dave himself. Each of the whiskeys offer unique flavor that play a key role in the final spirit. Predominately bourbon, the sweetness of BLACKENED pairs perfectly with the savory spice offered by the high rye composition of 46%.THE FINISHDave is renown for his whiskey finishes—an aspect he calls “flavoring for adults”. By resting the whiskey in the barrel of another spirit during the maturation phase, the whiskey picks up some of the unique, residual flavors left behind in the barrel. For BLACKENED, Dave chose to finish the whiskey in black brandy casks. The result is an added apricot note that plays perfectly alongside the honey and caramel tones of the pre-finished spirit.THE AWAKENINGAfter the whiskeys have been combined in the black brandy casks for finishing, they're jolted back to life by the unmistakable, earth-shattering music of Metallica. Using our proprietary sonic-enhancement system BLACK NOISE™, the whiskey is pummeled by sound, causing it to seep deeper into the barrel, where it picks up additional wood flavor characteristics.THE EXPERIENCEThe process the whiskey undergoes is intense; the flavor is anything but. The spirit has a warm, honey-amber color. Burnt caramel, oak and honey are present on the nose, with moderate hints of spice upon first taste. The flavor builds with notes of honey, cinnamon, allspice, clove and mint, with unexpected apricot lingering underneath. Expect a long and smooth finish with slightly creamy hints of butterscotch taffy, maple and honey.FORGED BY SOUNDEach batch of BLACKENED has a unique playlist that was used to sonically-enhance the whiskey during finishing. As the well-aged whiskey rests in the finishing barrels, the music is played to the barrel causing the whiskey inside to move and interact with the wood. The movement of the whiskey and the amount of interaction depends on the song being played, so the variation of the music creates a slight nuance from one batch to the next. Throughout this process, Dave tests the whiskey to determine the optimal color and flavor profile for each batch.--Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
Richie T and Mike "Vegas" Rogers talk about Metallica's collaboration with Dave Pickerell to create Blackened American whiskey and what makes the whiskey unique. Drink Up!
In my launch episode, we travel through time. How's that for a start!?! First, I talk to Rob Dietrich in June 2018. He was then Master Distiller at Stranahan's during the distillery's annual Cask Thief event. Then, we travel a year into the future to chat about his new role as Master Distiller for Blackened, Metallica's signature whiskey brand, at Bar Convent Brooklyn. Enjoy! Please subscribe, rate and review the show. Cheers!
Rock bands often sound differently after they replace a member, and the members of Metallica considered Master Distiller Dave Pickerell to be part of their family. They collaborated on Blackened American Whiskey until Dave's untimely death last November, and now, Metallica has completed the search for his successor. Rob Dietrich is leaving Stranahan's to join the band's Sweet Amber Distilling Company as the master blender and distiller. We'll talk with Rob on WhiskyCast In-Depth and find out why it's not his first time working with Metallica, too. In the news, U.S. regulators are floating a proposal to remove most of the restrictions on bottle sizes for whiskies and other distilled spirits, and that could open up the market to whiskies not previously available in the U.S. Distilling industry leaders aren't embracing the idea with open arms, while independent bottlers and importers are practically giddy at the possibility. What may be the first Chinese acquisition of a Scotch Whisky company has taken place, with the sale of Loch Lomond Distillers for more than $500 million, and construction has started on another cooperage in Kentucky to help supply the booming demand for Bourbon barrels.

Let's be honest for a moment. Look around the crowd at most whisky events, and if you're being honest with yourself, you'll notice that there's usually a pretty obvious lack of diversity in the room. Samara Rivers is trying to change that with the Black Bourbon Society, a group she created two years ago to bring African-American whisky lovers together through regional tastings and an active social media presence. Her society has been welcomed by the Bourbon industry, and her ultimate goal is to bring more people of color into that industry as well. We'll talk with Samara on WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Kentucky's barrel warehouses are holding more Bourbon now than they have in nearly 50 years, but believe it or not, that's actually creating a tax problem for the Commonwealth's distillers. Also, now that Dave Pickerell and the members of Metallica have unveiled their new Blackened American Whiskey, plans are moving forward on construction of a new distillery - and we'll have the latest in a story you'll only hear on this episode of WhiskyCast!
